Inspire Yourself: More Creative Favicons

Recently we’ve selected 50 Remarkable Favicons you can inspire yourself from. This follow-up is supposed to give you some more ideas for fresh, inspiring and creative favicon design.

Favicons, mini graphics for a particular web-site, can be displayed in the browser’s URL bar, next to the site’s name in lists of bookmarks, and next to the page’s title in a tabbed document interface. To be recognized immediately, favicons have to be visually appealing and fit to the design or logo of a given page.

Below you’ll find over 45 more beautiful favicons, which can serve as a nice source for inspiration. You can click on favicons - they lead to the page, which uses the image as a page icon.

Animated Favicons

Modern browsers can also show animated favicons, if the designer of a page provided some .gif-image as favicon. However, since the effect is sometimes obtrusive and disturbing, the animation is used rarely. Unless it’s used as shown in the example below. The effect remains subtle and surprising.

Some are nice but far from original. The first one is a copy of the new waiting cursor of vista. Dappit looks a lot like the old Flash logo.

Just a heads up. The favicon for Link [xiapdesign.com] is actually the default bluehost.com favicon. If you don’t set one up yourself bluehost uses theirs. I only know this because I use bluehost and have changed it before.

@BOB - Yours would have been better if it was rounded as the smiley face instead of odd shape and just cropped from the header image.

One pixel notched corners as used by Google Analytics. Instead of each option being boxed in a clickable rectangle, there is a 1px notch in each corner. It's not necessarily a curved corner, but it is a little softer than a normal box. Nice little trick.
