You don’t have to do everything by yourself. If you are running out of time or simply aren’t that enthusiastic about the coding process, you might be willing to consider special “coding services” to get your job done in time. Particularly since there are dozens of such services, the price is usually quite reasonable and worth the time you save, headaches you avoid and further projects you can keep working on. However, whether the result is sophisticated or not, is the matter of personal experience – at least it should be.
The companies and designers listed below do not design web-sites; instead they convert drafts and sketches (mostly in the Photoshop-format, .psd) into the (X)HTML-Code (with CSS-styling). The prices depend on the desired processing time. The faster you’d like to get the work done, the more expensive the coding will be. Some service providers offer optional extras – for instance, AJAX-Scripting and further interactivity.

Well, my company has only used xhtml slicer. While it is a great timesaver, they do tend to take pretty big shortcuts to keep costs down. Sometimes these don’t matter, other times the entire site can break if the user does something as simple as bumping the text up one step. Also, graphical shortcuts means things like minute shadows may be left out, diagonal lines may not line up, etc. Overall however, it’s so cheap, that it is a great option when you don’t need anything complex but also don’t have the time to do it yourself.

I’ve used SliceMyDesign, a service from Jayme Blackmon. It saved me a ton of time, the CSS was right on, and I’ve been able to edit and change it to meet all my secondary page needs with no problems. Highly recommended.

I’ve used XHTMLized. They have been one of the originals in this category and while their prices have been on the rise, their service is well worth it. They will do exactly what you need or describe, and are very quick most of the time faster than the estimates. They know all the quirks and keep things standards compliant.
My only complaint is that every time I go to them the price has gone up. I mean it started at $79 way back, and has now gotten to $249 for a single page. But I have to say it is well worth it and still at $249 it can save you time to keep designing.

If you’re looking for the personal touch, using one of these companies would be a great idea, especially if they can alter something to act in a specific manner (hovers, rollovers, etc…), but if all you need is a direct 1-to-1 conversion, a colleague of mine likes to use SiteGrinder2 Pro, a plugin for Photoshop which costs about $250 US.

If you do prefer working with people over a computer, there are many advantages do going that route (person over computer), but sometimes time is of concern.

I suppose that the services would be good for a graphic designer who wasn’t also a competent coder, but having one coded page doesn’t a good template make. Twice I’ve use a service when I was in a time crunch. Both times the code was okay but only if all the pages exactly followed the Photoshop comp. There was no extra typographic classes. I found that I still had to massage the stylesheet to make it broad enough to serve as a template, so I didn’t save all that much time.
Then there’s the fact that working with somebody else’s code, while it may be perfectly fine, doesn’t follow my coding conventions. I suppose if you found one service that stayed consistent, that wouldn’t be a problem. But I’d lose the CSS libraries that I’ve worked out over time.
One other problem with jobbing out page styling is that you’d never get your own HTML/CSS chops up to speed. I can take a pretty complex Photoshop layout and turn it into a template set with a couple of variations in 3-4 hours, a simple one in less time. I only got efficient by practice and working out my own reusable classes.
As to SiteGrinder, I use if for quick and dirty HTML comps. It will put out pages easily, after you learn its layer naming conventions. But for any kind of CMS or Dreamweaver templates the pages aren’t flexible enough, or optimized enough for my tastes. I still template out from scratch. That’s a short term cost in time for a long term benefit in flexibility and ease of maintenance and re-usability.
These aren’t just control freak issues. Solid templates save headaches and time in the long run.

I have used xhtmlslicer for several projects. As mentioned before, there turn around is good, but they do take short cuts. On complex sites they will get you about 80 – 90% of the way there, and you will still have to roll up your sleeves to get it just right. You do have to have a knowledge of css/xhtml to correct shortcuts that may break down when the site is fleshed with more content. I do recommend them however as ultimately it saves time and money and allows you to concentrate on design.

PSD2HTML is my vote. I am a designer and developer who occasionally just doesn’t have time to do everything myself. These guys rock! This is competent XHTML/CSS! They even implemented my design into a WordPress theme, and even through in a Javascript Form … all for $600 (this included three photoshop template pages). Incredible! They very nice and they communicate suberbly and promptly! No need to shop anywhere else.

Well, why are they so cheap?
They have a number of templates, and the one that fits best for a design will be used. But then… It costs extra if you want a sticky footer or a fixed header or any other stuff that has just that little of extra.
Also, they don’t keep SEO in mind, so in my opinion they’re pretty expensive for what they offer. - 21August 24th, 2007 12:38 am
PSD2HTML produces nice, slim and optimized CSS and valid XHML. The guys pay a lot of attention to detail, for instance all the headlines that use background images are coded with FIR technique (Fahrner Image Replacement). The 24 hours delivery time refer to working hours, so usually it takes 3-4 days for a design to be coded.
PSDXHTML is cheaper, quicker (1 day), the code is clean, but here no attention to detail. Although I’m pretty sure, if you specify what you exactly want, you will get it.With all of these service companies I’m always a bit astonished why they hide who they are and where the sit. You will never find a telephone number or address.

Recently I found this service called GoWebPlans(http://www.gowebplans) which offers far better service than these XHTML coding services. They will help you in doing the mock-up, developing standards and semantic aware coding and publish your site with the use of a CMS which makes later modifications to content dead simple.
Best thing is all this cost me just $495 and site was setup within 2 weeks. So I recommend you to give it a try…

That’s actually pretty good money, at least for me. It takes me around an hour or two to fully code a psd to xhtml and css. Heck, even at 100 bucks I’ll still be making a good hourly wage.

I was considering doing some work on the side of my normal job that is identical to what these companies offer. At these prices, though, it seems like a difficult market to enter (or perhaps the problem is that the market is *too easy* to enter).
I’ve read a comment that some of these companies don’t produce consistently good work, but other comments that mention how solid their reputation is. And as Harry points out, there is a lack of contact information on at least one of the companies’ sites, but that doesn’t seem to hurt their business.
More power to them.

I don’t find it that hard to take a complex layout, slice it and code it. Of course they are templates I created, but it still only takes an hour or two. XHTML isn’t hard to code if you know what you are doing. I suspect that the people who do this as their job do it the same as I. I can see a complex site in which the designer has no knowledge of web design taking a a full day, but any designer is web knowledge can design it in a way that makes coding easier.

These services definitely look like a good idea. I don’t think I’d personally use them, because I get pedantic and like to do things ‘just so’, but if I were a graphic designer with poor coding knowledge, or were simply in a rush and didn’t have time, I’d definitely check them out.

I’ve used the TheChoppr and was surprised how quickly and painfully was it. The guy responded to me within an hour and even he said 3 days I had the review version of my template within 2. Then he worked with me on the review and made all my requests and additional changes. Also, the page had very well organized and structured code.
I’d recommend TheChoppr and will definitely use them again.

I can’t recommend PSD2HTML highly enough. They are fast, friendly and their code is spot on. I have also had them install Drupal and create templates from my psd file and their work was excellent. Will keep using them for sure!

I have used and suggested PSD2HTML before. Their prices are good and their XHTML is good. But the CSS needs a little work. It’s good from a novice’s perspective, but if you’re looking to continue to build on what they create, it gets a little dicey. The way they format their CSS doesn’t always make it super easy. Being a 10+ year professional at this, my opinion is that they’re worth the money, but they’re not perfect.

I don’t get why those services cost that much, may be where they are based life is more costly than here, but I’m used to charge $10/hour with a 10-15 hours turn-around for a basic template group (3 pages) and that’s more than enough money for a living.
And I’m not talking about indy-ish rigid code that looks like sliced with Photoshop, I’m talking about hand-coded cross-browser liquid code, easily adaptable and even commented. - 54September 1st, 2007 2:44 am
Slice ‘n Diced did a great job on the website that I just launched. The code was clean and standards based. Fast turnaround and good support by Tyler after delivery. It was built into a content management system, so a few tweaks were needed after content was added, which was no problem – Tyler took care of it. One really nice bit about the code was that the CSS was well organized and commented, very easy to work with! I had no problems with the design “breaking” when for example, the font size is increased, the layout is very flexible. Great service!

I used slicemydesign.com for a couple of layouts recently. I was hesitant because of the price but in the end it all turned out well. The code was clean and what impressed me the most was the way the style sheet was formatted. I was able to track things down and make changes very easily.

The saying is true, you get what you pay for. I’ve dealt with a number of slicing shops, most of which look home grown but once I get into the process it’s difficult to get the job completed because of foreign workers. It’s hard to understand them, time zone differences and cheap labor make for a quite interesting combo. Most recently I used http://slicemydesign.com (based in the good ole USA) – yes the price was a bit higher, but heck if you want quality work then it’s worth it – Jayme is a great guy to work with and the turnaround is fast. xhtmlized.com is even higher and they are used by a ton of clients, though I’ve never used them! My suggestion is if you want concise clear communication go with one of these two shops. They are friendly, down to earth and easy to deal with. Just my 2 cents.

If anyone is thinking of using CSS Rockstars, you may want to hear my story first. I wanted them to make a CMS template (Prestashop) for me from my design. At first they were very good. Replied to my emails promptly etc. Anyway, they got my design on a Monday. their site says 3-4 days turnaround. so, i email on friday to get an update. i didn’t hear anything until the following monday and i know that they have email support on weekends. no big deal. so then i’m told my project was supposed to finished that day but they had some delays and it would be finished on that thursday. ok, still no big deal, i wasn’t in a big hurry. thurs comes and goes. so i email again on friday. on sunday with no explanation whatsoever they refunded my money. after a few emails asking for an explanation i still got no response. so, they wasted my time for 2.5 weeks and never gave me an explanation. at least i got my money back and that’s the best thing i can say about them.

Used them on a couple of projects. For the price I was not happy with the customer service I got. If you want to get a comparable price to the other services listed, you’ll have to wait 7 days to see anything, then you’ll have to go through corrections with them. In my experiences, I’ve had to tell them numerous times to make changes before they actually happened, plus these guys had a nasty attitude. In the end I got what I asked for, but it just took a long time and was more expensive than their competitors.PSD2HTML…

I’ve recently compiled a list of these services on my blog.
There’s really a LOT of them and also a LOT who do not produce quality code. Just increasing the text-size breaks the layout, some of their sites do not even validate.
Based on coding quality, I’d probably go with yummycss or xhtmlizers
As for customer support, I think a simple email would be a good way to start to at least gauge how fast they can respond. Good techinical skills and good communication is vital for these types of projects.I hope someone can pool some funds to properly evaluate their work.

We used cssJob.com for our outsource XHTML css coding service and we got a great deal. So far probably the best one we used for that price ($89 per page), but for quantity they always give us a discount.

I have used many times psdxhtml.com and have nothing but good things to say. Not sure about the 18 hours return, but close to it anyway. They do communicate with you if needed, but in most cases you upload your design, you pay, and in 2 days or so you get your page back. Been working with a lot of this shops and honestly, don’t go with anything that starts lower than $200 – they don’t know anything about coding! Trust me, it’s really better to pay more and save yourself a headache – still it’s affordable.
Previously I was happy with xhtmlized.com and w3-markup.com, lately we teamed up with cssninjas.com – best option so far.

I haven’t found a service yet that includes Javascript, Ajax, PHP in their pricing model. Some can do it, some cannot, and it always requires a special quote. It would be great if they factored that kind of work in.
Modern sites usually have at least some interactivity beyond simple buttons & links. I understand that the business model here is specialized & simple – so maybe it just doesn’t make sense for them to work that kind of stuff in. If one of these shops included it in their model & did good work, they would stand a cut above the rest.
Anyone know of a good shop that can handle javascript ajax & php, in addition to XHTML/CSS?

I’ve used The PSD Coder before, its not on that list though but it’s pretty cheap and so far hasn’t caused me any problems… Cost me $79 to get my homepage done and another $15 to get a contact page / form set up. http://www.thepsdcoder.com

I used http://thePSDcoder.com too… i was very impressed…. did what they said on the tin… very friendly, and most importantly, they emailed me like 20 times every time i had a question… so i felt pretty confident even on my first order.
run 4 jobs through them since, and all have been great.

I got two of my PSDs sliced from CSSilize http://www.cssilize.com/ One got for $9 and another for free:-) I did manage my projects through their project management tool and their testing guys are also did help
