How can they afford to do them that cheap? It is incredible.

Well, my company has only used xhtml slicer. While it is a great timesaver, they do tend to take pretty big shortcuts to keep costs down. Sometimes these don’t matter, other times the entire site can break if the user does something as simple as bumping the text up one step. Also, graphical shortcuts means things like minute shadows may be left out, diagonal lines may not line up, etc. Overall however, it’s so cheap, that it is a great option when you don’t need anything complex but also don’t have the time to do it yourself.

I’ve used SliceMyDesign, a service from Jayme Blackmon. It saved me a ton of time, the CSS was right on, and I’ve been able to edit and change it to meet all my secondary page needs with no problems. Highly recommended.

If you’re looking for the personal touch, using one of these companies would be a great idea, especially if they can alter something to act in a specific manner (hovers, rollovers, etc…), but if all you need is a direct 1-to-1 conversion, a colleague of mine likes to use SiteGrinder2 Pro, a plugin for Photoshop which costs about $250 US.

If you do prefer working with people over a computer, there are many advantages do going that route (person over computer), but sometimes time is of concern.

I suppose that the services would be good for a graphic designer who wasn’t also a competent coder, but having one coded page doesn’t a good template make. Twice I’ve use a service when I was in a time crunch. Both times the code was okay but only if all the pages exactly followed the Photoshop comp. There was no extra typographic classes. I found that I still had to massage the stylesheet to make it broad enough to serve as a template, so I didn’t save all that much time.

Then there’s the fact that working with somebody else’s code, while it may be perfectly fine, doesn’t follow my coding conventions. I suppose if you found one service that stayed consistent, that wouldn’t be a problem. But I’d lose the CSS libraries that I’ve worked out over time.

One other problem with jobbing out page styling is that you’d never get your own HTML/CSS chops up to speed. I can take a pretty complex Photoshop layout and turn it into a template set with a couple of variations in 3-4 hours, a simple one in less time. I only got efficient by practice and working out my own reusable classes.

As to SiteGrinder, I use if for quick and dirty HTML comps. It will put out pages easily, after you learn its layer naming conventions. But for any kind of CMS or Dreamweaver templates the pages aren’t flexible enough, or optimized enough for my tastes. I still template out from scratch. That’s a short term cost in time for a long term benefit in flexibility and ease of maintenance and re-usability.

These aren’t just control freak issues. Solid templates save headaches and time in the long run.

MMh, yeah, sitegrinder produces Xhtml strict, but isn’t as clever as specified:

PSD2HTML is my vote. I am a designer and developer who occasionally just doesn’t have time to do everything myself. These guys rock! This is competent XHTML/CSS! They even implemented my design into a WordPress theme, and even through in a Javascript Form … all for $600 (this included three photoshop template pages). Incredible! They very nice and they communicate suberbly and promptly! No need to shop anywhere else.

PSD2HTML produces nice, slim and optimized CSS and valid XHML. The guys pay a lot of attention to detail, for instance all the headlines that use background images are coded with FIR technique (Fahrner Image Replacement). The 24 hours delivery time refer to working hours, so usually it takes 3-4 days for a design to be coded.
PSDXHTML is cheaper, quicker (1 day), the code is clean, but here no attention to detail. Although I’m pretty sure, if you specify what you exactly want, you will get it.

With all of these service companies I’m always a bit astonished why they hide who they are and where the sit. You will never find a telephone number or address.

That’s actually pretty good money, at least for me. It takes me around an hour or two to fully code a psd to xhtml and css. Heck, even at 100 bucks I’ll still be making a good hourly wage.

I’ve used PSD2HTML before and have been impressed with the service. It took longer than quoted, but that is completely fine because the work was good. I plan to keep using them.

I was considering doing some work on the side of my normal job that is identical to what these companies offer. At these prices, though, it seems like a difficult market to enter (or perhaps the problem is that the market is *too easy* to enter).

I’ve read a comment that some of these companies don’t produce consistently good work, but other comments that mention how solid their reputation is. And as Harry points out, there is a lack of contact information on at least one of the companies’ sites, but that doesn’t seem to hurt their business.

More power to them.

I recommend XHTMLized. Their service was excellent last time I used them.

I don’t find it that hard to take a complex layout, slice it and code it. Of course they are templates I created, but it still only takes an hour or two. XHTML isn’t hard to code if you know what you are doing. I suspect that the people who do this as their job do it the same as I. I can see a complex site in which the designer has no knowledge of web design taking a a full day, but any designer is web knowledge can design it in a way that makes coding easier.

If anyone wants to pay me to code up their layouts for them, I’m game!

These services definitely look like a good idea. I don’t think I’d personally use them, because I get pedantic and like to do things ‘just so’, but if I were a graphic designer with poor coding knowledge, or were simply in a rush and didn’t have time, I’d definitely check them out.

I’ve used the TheChoppr and was surprised how quickly and painfully was it. The guy responded to me within an hour and even he said 3 days I had the review version of my template within 2. Then he worked with me on the review and made all my requests and additional changes. Also, the page had very well organized and structured code.

I’d recommend TheChoppr and will definitely use them again.

Bruno at design2markup did an awesome job for a site I gave him in photoshop. 48 hour turnaround, and gave me support for questions I had afterwards.

I have used and suggested PSD2HTML before. Their prices are good and their XHTML is good. But the CSS needs a little work. It’s good from a novice’s perspective, but if you’re looking to continue to build on what they create, it gets a little dicey. The way they format their CSS doesn’t always make it super easy. Being a 10+ year professional at this, my opinion is that they’re worth the money, but they’re not perfect.

i like to do things myself, that way i know exactly what i want and can tweak it as much as i can. all my sites are done by hand :-)

I don’t get why those services cost that much, may be where they are based life is more costly than here, but I’m used to charge $10/hour with a 10-15 hours turn-around for a basic template group (3 pages) and that’s more than enough money for a living.
And I’m not talking about indy-ish rigid code that looks like sliced with Photoshop, I’m talking about hand-coded cross-browser liquid code, easily adaptable and even commented.

I’ve recently compiled a list of these services on my blog.

There’s really a LOT of them and also a LOT who do not produce quality code. Just increasing the text-size breaks the layout, some of their sites do not even validate.

Based on coding quality, I’d probably go with yummycss or xhtmlizers
As for customer support, I think a simple email would be a good way to start to at least gauge how fast they can respond. Good techinical skills and good communication is vital for these types of projects.

I hope someone can pool some funds to properly evaluate their work.

I have used many times psdxhtml.com and have nothing but good things to say. Not sure about the 18 hours return, but close to it anyway. They do communicate with you if needed, but in most cases you upload your design, you pay, and in 2 days or so you get your page back. I am always requesting the sliced psd back and it is no problem as well. Highly recommended. Saves me so much time!

Been working with a lot of this shops and honestly, don’t go with anything that starts lower than $200 – they don’t know anything about coding! Trust me, it’s really better to pay more and save yourself a headache – still it’s affordable.
