3D-Experience in Flash

Used effectively, Flash-based designs can achieve astonishing presentation and impressive user interaction. (In fact, we’ve already showcased some outstanding examples earlier.) When supported by intuitive design, a mix of visual effects can create a rich user experience. Flash-designs with 3D-effects can be used to do just that. As a part of our Monday Inspiration series let’s take a look at some examples of incredible 3D-experience in Flash.

Ikea’s Dreamkitchen offers a tremendous visual experience: visitors navigate in slow motion in 3D through IKEA products. Interesting effect: the volume of the music changes as you pass throught the “IKEA universe”. Further examples: Dromkok, Demo. In the latter examples you can flip through 3D-rooms as well.

Komodo Media offers a quite new perspective on browsing through a portfolio. You can navigate through the site and observe single categories in 3D from different perspectives from different view points and angles. The mouse pointer seems to floating in the air; this is nice to play with, however not very user-friendly if you’d like to click on some specific area of the 3D-interface.

Rhythm of Lines is a Flash-based interactive stage where you can create your own “rhythm of lines” — a 100-sec movies in which lines can move, change their form and color and create shapes. You can create sweeping curves, colours and bursts, change the speed of lines and the perspective from which you look at them.

The changes are defined by mouse movements and keyboard input. Best “sculptures”, created by other users, are showcased in the exhibition section; you can playback your own rhythm and download it as a wallpaper.

Komodo Media reminds me of the interface to the video game DiRT. Really cool stuff!

The Komodo Media site reminds me a lot of the menu system in Colin McRae DiRT on Xbox 360, but it’s less elegant and isn’t as easy to navigate

But it still takes too long to load even over a high speed connection. Designers may love it, but what about John Q. Public’s short attention span?

Apparantly my computer is a glorified calculator.

My laptop couldnt cope with all the whizz bang 3d flash, i just got a load of stuttering imagery.

It’s worrying when you need such a hi-spec machine just to view a website.

I really love the sites that incorporate a 3D environment on a 2D screen.

Sometimes the interface can be counterintuitive though.

Love the links! My company produced a 3D flash CD-ROM in 2006 and it was a major undertaking from a code perspective. In the end it was all worth it. The client loved it and it even won an award but you have to count on the viewer having a decent machine to handle the processing.

Would have liked to have had more examples, I know there are quite a few more good examples out there and their fun to navigate as long as your not looking for something specific.

Here’s another website we just finished where we incorporated a 3D-Experience using Flash: http://www.DinoSquad.com. We launched this last week for Dic Entertainment’s cartoon Dino Squad which airs on CBS Saturday morning KEWLopolis show. We were rushed to launch this project to be sure there was web presence when the cartoon premiered last week, but we have a lot of KEWL features planned as we continue to build on the 3-D Flash environment.

    Please check it out: http://www.DinoSquad.com
and let us know what you think.

That Komodo site is absolutely horrible. Worst UI ever and it won’t stop moving when you try to read some of the larger text documents unless you completely let go of your mouse. Amazing design or not, the site is worthless.

Does anybody have a useful link on how to create something like the Audi A5 flash movie (the 3D effect with the ability to steer with your mouse)?

    Nice topic by the way!

The moment i saw the Komodo site screenshot, it immediately reminds me of the DiRT interface. But the bad thing is, it eats a lot of resources, even on a C2D machine, the animation is choppy >. click here

As echoed by several other replies, Komodo Media’s interface is close to DiRT’s in-game menu, though not as fluid. I always wondered whether the DiRT 3D menu style could be replicated in Flash, I guess this topic answered that finally. With some improvements, this would be a cool interface design. I foresee this style to be overused within the next year or so :D
