We Experience Solved Serious Server Problems
Update (06.12.2007): the decision is already made and the installation is running. We hope to get back on track till the end of the week. We’ll publish a detailed article about the issues shortly. Thank you for your comments.
Currently we are experiencing some
We’d like to have a solution which guarantees us a stable server performance and also takes possible server load peaks into account. We’d like to be sure that we can rely upon the service without worrying about extreme bills after a number of Slashdot and Digg effects. The latest are common and usual, so the server must be able to manage a NUMBER of requests.
Currently we are considering many options. But we hope to find a solution soon. Maybe you could help us out.
Until then unfortunately there is nothing we can do. Please stay tuned.
Update: to avoid misunderstanding we’d like to clarify that the reason for problems is not the server load itself, but the bandwidth-limitation our provider has set up.
The team here at Smashing Magazine. Mostly Sven & Vitaly.

Man, what I would do for a good dose of the Slashdot and/or Digg effect on my blog!
Good luck with your hosting issues and keep up the good work!

I suggest DomainFactory in Germany. They have a product that is called ‘Tagesserver’, if your site has a peak, you can buy (5€/day) the Tagesserver to settle the peak. http://www.df.eu

I hope you issues are resolved soon.Good luck!

I’d suggest Denness Networks, they’re not big names, but they have some serious pipe, as well as original approach to customer.
- 10December 1st, 2007 3:47 am
I highly recommend Media Temple. They have great customer service (US based and 24hr) and have many options to choose from.

I have also heard good things about MT.
Hope you find the best solution soon. - 14December 1st, 2007 4:04 am
As others I recommend mt http://www.MediaTemple.net for the large websites that receieve the crazy amount of traffic. Instead of picking a solutions listed, call them up and talk to them, if it comes down tell them to talk to the head hancho a simple small mt logo on this site and a small post once a month can get you a partnership with mt and free hosting.
Best Regards

(mt) is the way to go!
- 16December 1st, 2007 4:22 am
I have used MT for years – theyre not as good as you’d think – i recently switched to mosso – much more professional and reliable
- 17December 1st, 2007 4:25 am
you guys deserve this issue. I mean the extreme traffic! I love your great lists.
I have also heard good things about MT, but haven’t used them yet. My host has been good to me.

Hmmm. Ever thought about just shelling out the bucks for your own server and setting up an apache2 server. It might be a good way to go.
Do it yourself….. - 19December 1st, 2007 4:43 am
Why is everyone endorsing mt? I’m desperately leaving them now… though I was on the grid server. Another issue altogether.
- 20December 1st, 2007 4:55 am
Assuming your have a dedicated server, I’d highly suggest looking into LiteSpeed Web Server (http://www.litespeedtech.com/products/webserver/overview/) instead of using Apache. While it not free, it’s very good at handling large volumes of traffic and fending off DoS attacks.
I’m not associated with LiteSpeed, but we use the product and we’re very happy with it.
- 21December 1st, 2007 5:12 am
I’m not sure what kind of budget you have for hosting, but you might look at SuperbHosting by Superb Internet They have some very good deals on hosting, ranging from shared on up to dedicated boxes, fat pipes with good throughput, and fantastic uptime. I don’t represent the company; I’m just a very satisfied customer who has tried many different hosting solutions and found them to be among the best.
Good luck!
- 22December 1st, 2007 5:26 am
I would go with MT they are really good.
- 23December 1st, 2007 5:41 am
MediaTemple would be great. The best sites are hosted there!
- 24December 1st, 2007 5:52 am
BlogStorm runs on Burton Hostings basic plan of $9 per month and can take 25,000 uniques per hour at peak times without slowing down. We do use caching though.
- 25December 1st, 2007 5:55 am
We switched from MT to Mosso and have been really happy. Good support, fair price and an interesting grid system.
- 26December 1st, 2007 5:58 am
I am very satisfied with the gridserver from media temple, and have heard good things about their higher end services as well.
- 27December 1st, 2007 6:47 am
Haha what a bunch of loosers posting their “unlimited” shitty webhosts.
Hahaha…..
- 28December 1st, 2007 6:57 am
The solution is: Load balancing called “Round Robin”
You need at least two apache web servers for your content and one server as the “balancer” running pound. Static files you can also serve from a proxy if you want.
A single server solution won’t help you!!!

lunarpages.com
Best customer service out of all of them. If you ever have a problem, sometimes being able to talk to someone who actually cares about your problem is better than fixing the problem at all. They are great and always quick to handle requests and issues.Good luck.

I personally recommend MT. Its the better hosting providers. Keep on providing the better quality content.
- 35December 1st, 2007 8:25 am
DAThorn.com has been an excellent hosting provider – great service, good prices, mucho redundancy and backups available. I have been with them (in a small way, on a distributed server) for three years now. They are better than ever.
- 36December 1st, 2007 8:39 am
I’d recommend you get a dedicated server, or try out mosso.com or go with mediatemple.com in that order.
Get a dedicated server from http://www.theplanet.com, they have very good support and very cost-effective solutions ($69 dedicated server).
- 37December 1st, 2007 9:00 am
At my work we have some VPS’s through via verio. Their support is fantastic, and any issues I’ve had with the servers has been solved very quickly.

I too made the switch from Media Temple to Mosso and have been happy. I was on the grid on MT, and have have been unhappy with it. Everything was awesome before they made that grid network I thought.
- 47December 1st, 2007 2:11 pm
Have a look at what the other big players are using, Techcrunch uses MediaTemple and lighttpd as a HTTP server.
Have a look at builtwith.com, it will give you all the information you need to make a choice.

http://www.slicehost.com/
Slice Host, they offer VPS’ with a “soft” bandwidth cap, which is most important for when you get dugg/slashdotted.
Read up on it! - 49December 1st, 2007 3:10 pm
Joyent or MediaTemple. Either would be appropriate, and both have proven performance against slashdotting and the digg effect.
- 50December 1st, 2007 4:33 pm
Hello,
our partners have the special servcice for “slahdotted” websites:
They are not yet another “good web-hosting”. They are experts in the website scalability. Seems like they are exactly what you need.
- 51December 1st, 2007 4:48 pm
I would absolutely and wholeheartedly recommend uk2.net. Their servers includes a 100Mbit pipe out of the server and 10TB (10,000GB) of bandwidth per month. Their service is very good.
We have had poor experiences with godaddy.com and TERRIBLE experience with 1and1.com.
- 52December 1st, 2007 5:56 pm
Cari.net – We host here, as does at least one major search engine. We measure our data in terabytes per day, every day. Also, if you run a large site you should not be relying on the host to provide all support, you need your own server administrator. The support guys in house at hosting companies are either good and hopelessly over worked, or not that good and out of their depth, and will often suggest unsuitable quick fixes without first fully investigating the problem in the first place. At the very least, your own server admin will be able to speak fluent geek when reporting problems the host, and then fully understand their replys!
Good luck.
- 53December 1st, 2007 6:31 pm
I recommend XenonServer in Germany they have awesome prices and a very fast support. I never had problems with my webspace there.
- 54December 1st, 2007 6:46 pm
Joyent +1 – they have a great service and very good performance. And it seems they are used to sites with Slashdot + digg effects.
- 55December 1st, 2007 6:46 pm
I highly recommend Surftownhttp://www.surftown.com. They provide highly reliable hosting and with Smashing magazine they will be open to some kind of patnership.
- 56December 1st, 2007 7:25 pm
So it is not just me, well thats what you get when you offer such great info! :)
Good luck while finding a solution.
- 57December 1st, 2007 8:10 pm
You can’t really base your solution on a “company” but rather you need to base your solution on your architecture. 99.0% of all hosting companies use the same 3-4 networks. So it doesn’t really matter who you go with as long as they offer 24×7 support. Any of the aforementioned hosts will shut you down in the blink of an eye unless you’re on your own fully dedicated server.
Look for a quad-core dual processor with at least 8 GB of ram *WITH* load balancing. The solution for will cost approximately $900/mo in order to sustain 100% uptime regardless of the “effect”. You’re kidding yourselves unless you consider anything less than dual processor + 8 GB RAM with balancing.
If you’re serious about your site, then look at RackSpace.com. If you’re looking to spend money on a brand and be “cool”, then look at mediatemple.com.

I know that I will personally choose Media Temple. They look very professional and reliable. However, I haven’t tried their services myself since I haven’t had a chance to need that kind of expertise yet.
- 59December 1st, 2007 10:02 pm
I have been with Media Temple since Nov 06. I have a GRID server for our company sites and have two DV servers for client sites. I can say without reservation that if you go with Media Temple … go DV. The GRID seems to have never-ending issues, especially with email. I will also say that their tech support is second to none.
- 60December 1st, 2007 11:27 pm
I would absolutely recommend a hosting company called reliable sitereliablesite.net. They do not charge for going over your account, have awesome support, and seem to be set up to handle some heavy, powerful traffic. They take their hosting seriously and are good at what they do.
- 61December 2nd, 2007 12:05 am
Stay away from Fasthosts anyway – always having problems with them and don’t find staff very co-operative. My site along with a few client’s sites have been down the past couple of days because they had to reset all the ftp and mysql passwords due to a security risk. They didn’t send me an email until today to explain what they had done.
- 62December 2nd, 2007 12:07 am
Without question, Joyent.
- 63December 2nd, 2007 12:34 am
Slicehost + Nginx.
- 64December 2nd, 2007 12:43 am
A Joyent Accelerator would also work well. Give Jason Hoffman or Kristie Wells a buzz.
- 65December 2nd, 2007 12:48 am
I saw this article a while ago:
ThinkVitamin: Surviving the Digg Effect with Amazon Web ServicesTheir description of Amazon Web Services has me sold if I should find myself in a position to need it. There’s some nuances, but the author seems to cover most of the pros and cons.
Best of luck, thanks for the mag.

Hey guys, I’ve used Media Temple, Dreamhost, Bluehost, Joyent, Slicehost and a few others for serving my various applications. Out of them all, Joyent and Slicehost have been the best for me handling high traffic volumes.
Media Temple has had a lot of issues with downtime and shared servers (dreamhost, bluehost) aren’t the best way to go for something with high traffic.
- 68December 2nd, 2007 2:01 am
Also suggesting Media Temple.
good luck guys - 69December 2nd, 2007 5:00 am
Been also using MT for years, their partnership offer is great. and saved me from insane bills .Unfortunately I would not recommend their grid system.
I’m currently looking for an alternative. - 70December 2nd, 2007 7:37 am
Totally go with MT. They host some huge websites. And they are reasonably priced. Did I mention they have awesome support?
- 71December 2nd, 2007 7:46 am
I’m in charge of six major media website, and we’ve gone through our share of crappy web servers. Under no circumstances would I suggest datapipe, ever. They changed their shared hosting policy, and without any warning whatsoever, they unplugged us entirely. Over the years we spent several thousand dollars with them, and they disconnected us without even a phone call. We scrambled and were running on a new server within a day.
I suggest getting yourself a Dell 2u box, install Debian, and buy a little space at a colo.
- 72December 2nd, 2007 9:53 am
coincidentially found just another article about Amazon S3 at digital-web.com
http://www.digital-web.com/articles/scalable_hosting_s3/ - 73December 2nd, 2007 10:32 am
MediaTemple, for sure. If it’s diggs / slashdot issues that are the problem, they have this MySQL Burst Container thing that rocks the house for you, saved my butt a few times.
- 74December 2nd, 2007 11:13 am
It seems to me, that if you issue isn’t server performance, than the best solution would be to stick with your host and move your static content (aka your awesome images/screenshots that make your posts worth reading) to a company like Akamai or some other credible CDN. Quickest for you to implement, cost effective, and highly recommended by all the top sites (8 out of Alexa’s top 10 use a CDN to improve their site’s performance).
- 75December 2nd, 2007 11:44 am
joyent (http://joyent.com/accelerator) and amazon s3 / ec2.
use a CDN for static content.
simplified turnkey products (Dreamhost, MediaTemple) are not likely to scale. Dreamhost PS could work for small to medium sites. http://www.dreamhostps.com/
- 76December 2nd, 2007 1:15 pm
I use Host Dime Great uptimes, good support, friendly and knowledgeable staff. You’d think they’d pay me for an endorsement like this… hmmm. No really I have used them for about 2 years now and they are great.
- 77December 2nd, 2007 1:17 pm
AMAZON S3
WHY AREN’T YOU GUYS USING IT ALREADY ? I am very very angry at the moment.
- 78December 2nd, 2007 2:52 pm
I’ve used 1and1, Dreamhost and Media Temple. I’m now on Mosso and have been very satisfied with their service.
- 79December 2nd, 2007 8:36 pm
Did someone mention Media Temple’s Grid Server!
Don’t bother; it’s useless; my site on Grid server was down (oofline) for more than 7 hours yesterday. Steer well clear of Media Temple–big promises, but sadly just hot air.I’m also looking for a new host for iLT. Anything but MT.
- 80December 3rd, 2007 2:11 am
So its to move to a more flexible host/ provider.
- 81December 3rd, 2007 9:39 am
Have you ever considered getting your own colocated server? :) Just ensure you do your research as to which facility you choose, their connectivity, and their reputation/service. I personally colocate as well as do datacenter sales in arizona, but you should choose whatever site and company best fits your needs.
If not, i recommend http://www.softlayer.com/ for managed hosting, very affordable, lots of neat features, and it was started by the people who used to own theplanet before they got bought out and bastardized.
- 82December 3rd, 2007 11:30 am
Yea go with either Mosso, DonkeyBallz Hosting, or HorseButt Inc.
- 83December 3rd, 2007 11:46 am
use pair, they are excellent, and would be suited to what you need. datapipe are overpriced, their customer service is crap, I would also not recommend Cari, as they have the worst customer service I’ve ever encountered. Rackspace are another house of lies, they’ll promise the world, but very rarely deliver. I’ve had really bad experience with everyone but pair…. having said that, S3 or Elastic for your static pages and images would also free up a lot of time for your server side scripts.
- 84December 3rd, 2007 12:12 pm
I would recommend rimuhosting. VPS solutions are almost always the best. They have fantastic support and can instantly upgrade your VPS through software settings. Very affordable and a huge variety of server capabilities. On top of that, you have root access and complete control over your system and, it is (virtually) completely separate from any other server. It’s like being co-located without having to deal with all the issues that come with it.
I can’t recommend them enough.
- 85
- 86December 3rd, 2007 4:17 pm
+1 slicehost.com
- 87December 3rd, 2007 5:48 pm
I would recommend you to by Fast good linux server and pay for colocation. Keep only one site on it.
- 88December 3rd, 2007 6:21 pm
(MT) without a doubt!
- 89December 3rd, 2007 9:51 pm
I would recommend to check if all these people don’t promote their own service.
- 90December 3rd, 2007 10:57 pm
We pay a little higher and use Host My Site. We host MANY clients using there VPS and dedicated servers. The service and tech support is unparalleled in the industry. The tech support guys are in the same room as the network engineers and this makes a HUGE difference. Not to mention FULL 24×7 support. Link: http://www.hostmysite.comCheck us out at Syngistic
- 91December 4th, 2007 12:35 am
Your web site host can’t help it that you guys are so awesome. :D
Keep it up!
- 92December 4th, 2007 1:21 am
You have to try Locaweb – http://www.locaweb.com.br, one of the best host providers of the world.
- 93December 4th, 2007 1:29 am
Load slowly, really
- 94December 4th, 2007 2:34 am
Do NOT switch to Mosso. That is, unless of course, you’d like to pay for the right to beta test their web server product.
- 95December 4th, 2007 2:50 am
dreamhost
- 96December 4th, 2007 3:33 am
Good golly. So many people have SO many recommendations for hosting services, most of which are pure crap. Just an excuse to pimp your own companies, I guess.
Here’s a solution that few have offered: Go to a big hosting company, and get a big, fat dedicated server with unlimited bandwidth in exchange for a permanent ad. Rackspace has done this before – several times. I’m sure others would do it as well. You have several thousand viewers a month that are in a very specific demo, so why not take advantage of it?
- 97December 4th, 2007 4:02 am
I agree with TheZero. This has turned into a name drop frenzy. You will find a suitable host after doing some of your own research. Go with a reputable large company who has been around for a while because they have the experience and connections.
- 98December 4th, 2007 6:26 am
I highly recommend http://www.realitychecknetwork.com. They are the hosts for several very high traffic sites. They aren’t the cheapest, but then again, you get what you pay for. I’ve been satisfied with their uptime and support for almost 3 years now.
- 99December 4th, 2007 6:49 am
Are you guys located in germany? Your current host doesn’t particularly scream quality.
I recommend servint.net – By far the most professional, knowledgable and quickest hosting I’ve used. They’re more expensive than most places, but you DO get what you pay for.
- 100December 4th, 2007 7:56 am
My vote is for media temple.
- 101December 4th, 2007 8:28 am
Hello, I suggest http://www.amenworld.com
Is my hosting provider since 2003 and you can have your OWN machine WITHOUT limits of traffic, starting for a very low price.
Right now I’m running a dual core 1000 will 1 gb ram and 2×160gb raid, fedora+plesk for 99 euros / month.Bye!

DreamHost is the way to go
- 103December 4th, 2007 12:14 pm
Datapipe.net, layeredtech.com or exabytes.com can be considered. I have bought servers with all three of them and I am pretty much satisfied.
- 104December 4th, 2007 3:33 pm
Look into Liquidweb. A little more expensive then some others but for the quality and Service, you can’t beat them.
- 105December 4th, 2007 5:01 pm
I suggest you name and shame your current provider – they should help you, and then get a mention for being so great.
- 106December 4th, 2007 6:23 pm
Try ROMARG….they’re very very good, servers never drop, no limitations….
- 107December 4th, 2007 11:04 pm
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet since I dont have the time to sift through the comments, but you should check out Wiredtree http://www.wiredtree.com
We used Media Temple for a few years at the firm I work for but we have been having a few issues lately so we are moving over to wiredtree. We have heard a lot of good things about them and done lots of research and found nothing but good things.
- 108December 4th, 2007 11:25 pm
(MT.) Then you would get to put the neat little icon on your site. Because for some reason that means something to some people. ???
- 109December 4th, 2007 11:39 pm
I recommend http://www.mediatemple.net too
we saw this webhost guide a while ago,

Any Filipinos in here?
- 110December 5th, 2007 6:24 am
If you use wordpress id say wordpress VIP service, your problem is their favourite subject.
I guess MT works for normal site i dont ahve anything that huge though
- 111December 5th, 2007 7:27 am
DreamHost is my only suggestion for web hosting to anyone that asks or needs to know.
:)
- 112
- 113December 5th, 2007 9:11 am
I’d like to suggest you start with the obvious. You’re pages are too large. Especially the full page views as are received on the RSS feed. I downloaded the images off of top section of “Icons for your desktop” and the first 17 add up to 1.6 Mb. The rest is probably deadly. Once you add a slashdot and digg factor on that, you’re just asking for trouble. Cut down the number of images, the size, or the quality of them (Camera.png is 278kb) and it should be a good start.
- 114December 6th, 2007 6:21 am
You should use Godaddy , dedicated server monthly 100-150 is enough…
- 115December 6th, 2007 6:32 am
I’m on Media Temple. No complaints thus far.
- 116December 6th, 2007 12:11 pm
We have 8 dedicated servers @ Rackspace and they call US if something starts looking fishy — how many of your providers do that?
Also insane features and speed — all this comes with high cost though.
- 117December 6th, 2007 2:44 pm
Try http://www.Hostingpacific.com
I use them for my business and personal website. they are fast and always answer to my questions in less than 30 min. One other peace of advice never and I say never use servage or you will have even more headache as I did - 118December 6th, 2007 9:20 pm
The guys over at Media Temple are great. I’ve used them for about 2 -3 years and I haven’t had any problems.
I’m sure they’ll be able to sort out a load-balancing set up for you guys.
- 119December 6th, 2007 11:54 pm
Yeah! What a great idea! Maybe they can just ditch images all together and act like every other mash-up listing site.
The high quality and sheer amount of images is one of the main things that set Smashing Magazine apart from others.
- 120December 7th, 2007 12:11 am
Hey! too bad with the server mishaps, it’s making my reading slower! (haha)
I actually work for a major hosting solution, but not the one i’m gonna recommend ;)
like others, with everything in consideration that you do here.. I’d suggest getting in touch with mediatemple.net (mt). They’re rock-solid, and their support team actually knows their stuff and works fast. If anything, give them a call, let ‘em know what you’re looking for, and they can give you some realistic answers about what they can do for you!
I could tell you about my employer, but i’m sure you know a lot about them already, everybody does ;)
- 121December 7th, 2007 12:23 am
What the heck man. I know that stuff can be expensive, but come on. I need Smashing every day. It’s what I live for the first half hour of my morning. I click enough ads to make up for about 1000 hits a day.
- 122December 7th, 2007 12:58 am
So sorry about your plight.
Get Well Soon. - 124December 7th, 2007 4:46 am
How about you quit submitting your posts to Digg, Slashdot, Delicious, StumbleUpon. Think about your current viewers instead of trying to drive a ridiculous amount of traffic to your ads.

So you want them to work for free?
I work on a largish website (around 3million visits a month) and can tell you its a lot of work, why shouldn’t they drive traffic to the ads?

I’m glad to hear you have come to a resolution. Hopefully we will be in for more posts in the very near future. Your little spot on the web makes for great reading in the downtime. Keep up the good work!

Why not host all your images and media at Amazon S3?
If your host can handle the load then Amazon S3 can handle the bandwidth :) - 130December 10th, 2007 7:51 am
I never said no ads, I implied avoiding the “slashdot-effect” by not posting to slashdot, digg, or delicious. Goes back to the recent stories on Digg: “Why have ads on technology based sites where user are not very likely to click them?” I’m not against the ads, I’m against self-inflicted server problems.
Getting paid while sacrificing experience for your users seems a little counter-intuitive.

I have several sites with (mt) and they all have latency issues from over 6 months. Guess what you can take their support and stick it in the back, I still have 20+ seconds pageload time and they simply do nothing.
The only thing they say is “we are aware” and “we’re working hard to resolve” … pactically nothing happens .. I am gonna swotch soon and I am looking for a good VPS with rails, affordable of course and managed . Any ideas ?
Does anyone has a clue how NetworkSolutions VPS works ? But really I am trying to see what can say someone who has used it not oppinion about the guys.Ty.

Support is the most important thing you should research when finding a host or dedicated server. Call the company a few times at different times. Ask a lot of questions. I moved to Server Intellect because I called them 6 times in three weeks and every time someone picked up the phone to help me. It wasn’t some 6 dollar an hour phone room taking a message or opening up a support ticket, it was a live tech ready to help me. You can find a 100’s of server host, but the support is what you want to pay for when it is the zero hour and things need to be running smoothly.

So, who did Smashing Magazine end up going with for a hosting provider? I would really like to know, as I am currently searching for a host that doesn’t suck.
