Adobe Flash Tutorials – Best of
Although usability evangelists often consider Flash to be a usability nightmare, used properly, Flash can provide users with a rich and interactive interface which would be impossible otherwise. Today Flash is the de-facto standard for interactive elements on the Web as most users install Flash plug-in by default. And in fact, there are many paths creative designers can take to create a more interactive and user-friendly interface.
Searching for ‘flash tutorials’ via Google & Co. won’t provide you with the results you expect. Not that you won’t find any relevant results, on the contrary — you will be directed to a large number of Flash repositories which offer everything: sometimes useful, but mostly not. Besides, browsing through these repositories isn’t that much fun — as you sometimes need to figure out whether a link you see is a hidden AdSense-block or the actual tutorial. And it’s really hard to find something “refreshing” and new simply using some standard keywords.
This article provides hand-picked professional Flash tutorials which can enrich your design skills and improve the quality of your works. We’ve tried to select most interesting and useful tutorials. Most sources can serve as the entry point for further tutorials.

This tutorial steps you through the creation of the Reflect class.
Flash Tutorial – Fullscreen Flash Movie with no Warping or Stretching
Flash movies inherently have a predetermined height and width, as defined by the size of the Stage in the Flash authoring tool. Generally when a Flash movie is resized in the web browser, its contents get warped and stretched. This is sometimes not a problem with vector graphics, but with bitmap graphics it is an utter disaster. There are, however, some clever ActionScript techniques that can allow you to resize a Flash movie without any distortion of its contents. 5 pages.

Using a mouse to draw is a new experience and if you are not familiar with programs like Illustrator and don’t own a Wacom board Flash is a very easy place to start learning.
Walk Cycles: The Right Way
This tutorial isn’t about walk cycle theory. I’m assuming you already know that part. If you don’t, go buy Richard Williams’s Animator’s Survival Kit. My goal is to show you ways to use Flash that make it easier to create a good cycle, in regards to solid foot placement and consistent speed–two things that I’ve seen lacking in many Flash animated walk cycles.
ActionScript 3.0 for developers and designers: Creating a preloader
Jamie Kosoy for Adobe. Adobe Flash is unique in that the content you create with it is intrinsically artistic and programmatic. Thank you for this great series!!!
- 3January 17th, 2008 11:12 am
I’m gonna level with ya here – I love the site and always impressed with the weekly lists, but this is not a good list of Flash tutorials at all. I think adding links to Kirupa and GoToAndLearn at the end are going to be most valuable to anyone trying to learn Flash.
- 4January 17th, 2008 11:35 am
This looks like a pretty good list of tutorials for designers to practice around with. I like doing various tutorials sometimes just for the learning aspect of doing something differently. All and all a pretty great list, not exactly for beginners all the way through though.
- 5January 17th, 2008 11:55 am
Awesome as always!
- 6January 17th, 2008 11:57 am
AMAZING!!!! Keep up the good work guys!

the link to the 360 Grad View is wrong, it points to the phone book feature on FlashFridge. BTW great list and always reading the RSS feed.
- 10January 17th, 2008 12:09 pm
Again A Great List
- 11January 17th, 2008 12:19 pm
360 Grad View links to phonebook
somewhat useful list though
- 12January 17th, 2008 12:57 pm
One of the best lists yet. Thanks very much.
- 13January 17th, 2008 12:59 pm
What Tony commented was exactly what was going through my head when reading this article. This site tends to put out quality articles, but this is not a great list of Flash tutorials. I’d love a flash tutorial list that included things professional web firms use on their flash websites. FWA type of material.
- 14January 17th, 2008 1:09 pm
Very nice compilation
- 15January 17th, 2008 1:29 pm
Dan: things aren’t so easy. If FWA type was easily learnable through tutorials, everybody would be doing it. Instead, one needs to focus on several different techniques, step by step, and it still takes several people on a great studio to do so (most of the time). FWA-quality websites are usually a combination of great art, concept, and development, and this is not something you find in simple tutorials. Comes with experience.
If you want to learn techniques used for those websites, this list is a great starting point. Have a look at GotoAndLearn. Then learn XML reading, animation through code, and (OOP) design patterns, and all other specific techniques one needs for each specific case: Papervision3D, socket communication, video, etc.
- 16January 17th, 2008 1:39 pm
while this suits fine as a list of ‘fun things to do in flash’ I also agree that it is not very professional.
what i was hoping for was a more practical list of flash tutorials that would help in creating professional websites;
more inline with the standard content type of the website. - 17January 17th, 2008 1:52 pm
Magnifique sélection.
Merci. - 18January 17th, 2008 1:59 pm
I’m going to have to go ahead and agree with Tony on this one. I appreciate a lot of the articles here but this is a pretty weak list of flash tutorials.
- 19January 17th, 2008 2:05 pm
I’m not particularly interested in Flash, but I think this paragraph from your introduction sums up what’s great about this site:
“Searching for ‘flash tutorials’ via Google & Co. won’t provide you with the results you expect. And it’s really hard to find something “refreshing” and new simply using some standard keywords.”
To paraphrase in my own words – there is a lot of great information on the Internet, but finding it isn’t always that easy. Posts such as these help us all.
Thanks.

Wow !!! I was waiting for that post !!! Great !!! Despite the old coding techniques of some of those tutorials, this is amazingly helpful !!! Thanks ato SM once again !!!
- 24January 17th, 2008 5:46 pm
How is it that Smashing always seems to know when you are about to try to learn something you haven’t yet learned.
Perfect timing for some of these tutorials and sites!!
- 25January 17th, 2008 6:28 pm
WOWW!! great list… smashing agaiinnn…. i have some tutorials collection in my blog… i can never be compared to this list… ! SM rocks!

- 33January 18th, 2008 6:06 am
I usually like your lists, but let me say that this isn’t good enough.
there´s several tutorials here who does’t fit “the Smashing Magazine level”
Sorry guys, you are humans too! - 34January 18th, 2008 6:22 am
Not a bad list but many of the techniques are now out of date. Flash is less about timeline tweening and more about actionscript. Would have been nice to focus more on good actionscript examples.
For anyone interested http://www.gotoandlearn.com by Lee Brimelow has some awsome example of dymanic rich flash programming and he works closley with Adobe so his code is of a high standard.
- 35January 18th, 2008 9:40 am
These lists are great but it would be awesome if the next one contained only AS3. I am personally finding it hard to find some solid Action Script 3 tutorials out there.
- 36January 18th, 2008 9:58 am
i’m sorry, but most of these tutorials are total BUSH LEAGUE
- 37January 18th, 2008 10:31 am
I think there are better examples.
- 38January 18th, 2008 11:09 am
With _very_ few exceptions, these tutorials produce horrible, amateur results. Definitely not a good list, and a poor showing by Smashing.
- 39January 18th, 2008 11:16 am
A great list of very good tutorials – bookmarked.
- 40January 18th, 2008 11:48 am
This list is a good list if you use it for what it’s meant to be: a collection of touchstones for developing your *own ideas.* That said, I think for Flash the best method of learning is a) have some project that will really challenge you in Flash and b) using two books, a reference manual and a Flash RIA architecture type book. And supplement your knowledge with sites (like Smashing).
- 41January 18th, 2008 12:30 pm
you are really smashing minds!
- 42January 18th, 2008 1:25 pm
It’s not good enough to bash a list someone has taken the time to compile unless you can provide alternate tutorials that you’ve found more useful.
- 43January 18th, 2008 2:16 pm
great list.. good job!
- 44January 18th, 2008 8:52 pm
what a beauty!!! bravo SM!!!
- 45January 19th, 2008 9:36 am
The “Animated logo” tutorial is great! Didn’t have time to check the others but I sure will! This article will help me build a lot of new cool additions to my website!
- 46January 19th, 2008 9:57 am
learning flash from tutorials is the worst you can do IMO. you will learn a wrong, inproper or simply outdated way. you’ll lose time and won’t learn anything right.
99.9999% of all tutorials are not made by professionals and mostly contain really ugly and stupid workarounds.
get 2-3 books, read and understand them. then try to build your own ideas. have a look at tutorials when there’s a specific problem to solve – but don’t start with them – they will only fool you. as i said, read a theoretical documation first or you’ll most probably have a hard time and give up.
- 47January 19th, 2008 10:09 am
It’s very cool!
goes to bookmarks… I like alot of this tutorials :) - 48January 19th, 2008 10:40 am
hello,
i’m looking for a site that will show me how to produce agency-level Flash banner and homepage canvas work. does anything exist out there like http://psdtuts.com/ but for Flash FLAs?
i’m sure you’re all familiar with the type of work i’m thinking of:
it’s those subtle, yet commercial-quality transitions, wipes, masks, etc…
any idea where to find template work or tutorials on the web for this type of stuff?
thanks!!
sg
- 49January 19th, 2008 2:07 pm
the link to the simple header also points to the phone book.
- 50January 21st, 2008 3:02 am
No matter what those critics say, I’m dearly grateful that SM took some time to provide us these tutorial links. Bear in mind that some people is learning flash from the very basic and these links help. We are all amateur in some ways..so stop complaining…post the links that you think is good, that’ll be grand.
- 51January 21st, 2008 11:54 am
Nice – thank you for these!
- 52January 22nd, 2008 3:58 am

- 59March 19th, 2008 1:35 pm
It is a little disappointing to see more negative comments than I’m used to seeing. I think the list is good for people getting into Flash, which are normally the people that would use a tutorial. I’m going to have to agree with Not_An_Alien on this one. The stuff you need to know to create award winning, professional Flash sites you don’t learn from a fifteen minute tutorial. Lee Brimelow’s gotoandlearn is a good place to start, but even then, you’re just duplicating someone else’s work. I’ve seen people include the final products from the gotoAndLearn tutorials in their portfolio. Tutorials can give you some tools, but they’re meant to teach you about Flash, not write hundreds of lines of actionscript while becoming innovative to win FWA type of stuff. If you aren’t using it to learn, and only using it for the finished product then don’t waste your time on doing the tutorial, just buy an XML driven template.

Tutorial request: Parralax effect
Dear reader,
I would like to request a tutorial for a parralax effect. I’ve spotted a couple months ago a beautiful internetsite. For my own site I want to sort of duplicate the parralax effect shown on this site. I’ve tried for a couple of weeks to create this effect but with no succes. So to all the good people can you please help me and explain to me how to create this effect in a tutorial. Thanx a lot in advance
Chris

Smashing is a great inspiration but to put up a big mess of mixed as2 and as3 tutorials without writing wichone is what is not very useful at all.
If you make a real good list of tutorials that only use as3, that would be really useful!
as2 is in the past, would you list tutorials for old versions of other programming languages? - 89February 22nd, 2009 12:11 am
wow!!!tutorials r excellent. These are easy to understandand there are many tricks to do works simply. But all tutorials are small works.I need any good animations which should be critical to do…..

“Simple Shape Animation” tutorial is no longer available.

most of the tutorials in this thread are very rookie and create cheap results. nothing for industry projects. i have to agree with tony and dan…. the title “best of” isn’t, whats inside.
for good flashing, check gotoandlearn.com for exsample…but “smashing” is still a big inspiration for me!

Hi,
I’m looking for someone who can help me make an animation of a stretching 3d spring with balls coming out of it as you stretch it using flash and illustrator. I have drawn the spring using illustrator but don’t know how to do this using flash. - 97October 29th, 2009 11:49 pm
