29 Brilliant Music Videos
Music has always been an excellent source of inspiration. Particularly if you are stuck with some problem you can’t find a workaround for, a beautiful song can give you a new perspective, let you see the problem from a different angle. And sometimes it’s just useful to make a break — for instance, watching some music videos.
In this post we present some unusual music videos for your monday’s coffee break. Some of the videos are thought-provoking, some of them are funny and some are bizarre. While many of them are well-known, you’ll probably find some videos you’ve never watched before. The videos all perfectly to the music which is being played in the background. Hopefully, everyone will find something new and inspiring for himself/herself. Please notice that you might need to watch some videos at least twice to get the idea behind them.
You might want to read the descriptions of the videos — they are provided below every link. The screenshots often don’t reveal that much about the videos they stand for.
Music Videos
Unkle – Rabbit in your Headlights
What is this guy whispering? Who is the guy? And what is he doing in the tunnel? You need to watch this video till the very end. You won’t be disappointed.
Jason Forrest – “War Photographer” (2005)
These freaking vikings are both cool and strange. But it doesn’t make them less sympathetic. And they can play both on drums and guitars pretty well.
Bat for Lashes — What’s A Girl To Do
00:38 is the best moment in the history of music videos. Well, this one is kind of scary. Hares driving on the bicycles and clapping their hands at the same time? A masterpiece from the year 2007.
Nick Cave & Kylie Mingoue — Where The Wild Roses Grow
Probably one of the most beautiful music videos ever made. There is no need for words. Watch it.
Rob Dougan — Clubbed To Death
Incredible editing and directing. So symbolic, so powerful.
Fujiya & Miyagi – Ankle Injuries
What about a music video which is made with thousands of 6-sided dice? Exactly. And the music fits perfectly.
Radiohead – “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” (1995)
The video for this song was shot using different film frequencies, allowing various actions to unfold at different rates within the same frame. The emotional effects of this practice range from silly to unsettling. Try not to watch this video too many times; it begins to feel a little more disturbing each time. [Jeff Shreve]
Sia – “Breathe Me” (Quicktime)
The production of this video clip took several thousands Polaroid photos. The result is… at least unusual.

Citizens Here and Abroad – You Drive and We’ll Listen To Music
Jason Koxvold’s video pairs crashing cars with crashing guitars. Rock. Very well executed and perfectly edited. Must see.
Moby – Porcelaine
Such a beautiful song. One of the videos you are amazed about once, and you never forget again.
The Strokes – You Only Live Once (Imeem)
With a Hundred ways to do a dozen things, why not try it all? Directed by Warren Fu.
Arctic Monkeys – A view from the afternoon (Quicktime version)
A song about a passion and unstoppable willingness to do what you love. Simple, yet so effective.
“Glosoli” – Sigur Ros
“Glosoli” depicts a young drummer boy gathering up the other denizens of what appears to be an adult-free utopian land, and leading a revolution to freedom. So beautiful and so touching. Don’t miss the last scene.
The Avalanches – “Frontier Psychiatrist”
This is freaky. Sometimes the most obvious concept for a video also turns out to be the best. The ghost choir is the best. Except for the nightmarish old-man turtle, of course. [via PitchForkMedia]
Royksopp – Remind Me
We’ve featured this movie already, but it’s worth mentioning it in this post. You can watch it dozens times and still not catch everything. A day in the life of an average working Jill, broken down into its minutest component parts. The unstated joke: mankind has erected immense, resource-devouring systems of almost incomprehensible complexity just so you can sit in your cubicle.
Blur – “Coffee & TV” (Quicktime)
Actually, this song is about a dancing milk carton. However, its adventures are funny, cute, but with a pleasing streak of cruelty. The milk-carton protagonist even has its own fan site.
Boards of Canada: “Dayvan Cowboy” (Quicktime)
It’s pretty easy to get wrapped up in the grainy, existential pulchritude of this thing and completely miss the cheeky self-reference. So, um, where can one surf in Canada? Directed by Melissa Olson.
Move Your Feet – Junior Senior
That’s weird. And that’s what makes it special. A pixel-based video clip.
Daft Punk – One More Time
Probably one of the most colorful animated music videos of all time. Daft Punk, one more time.
Xploding Plastix – Joy Comes In The Morning
A music video about the world we live in and the world we’d like to live in.
Unkle – Eye For Eye
A haunting track with a creepy animation, which won an award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Nasty weirdness drops from the sky and then moves on.
Vitalic – Poney
Flying dogs in light of a laser and in slow-motion. Nobody has ever done something like this before.
Justice “D.A.N.C.E.” (Quicktime)
Sometimes even T-Shirts can speak. For instance, in this music video. “D.A.N.C.E.” was nominated for “Video of the Year at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. On the first of November Justice received the “Video Star” award at the European Music Awards in Munich.
Forss – “City Ports”
The visualization fits perfectly to the music.
Radiohead – Just
What could the man on the street possibly have said?
Prodigy – Out Of Space
Prodigy’s “Out of Space” is probably one of the weirdest videos ever created. Welcome back to the 90s — this is how some videos looked like then. The song which was * for the whole generation.
The Verve – Bitter Sweet Symphony
A video everybody has seen. And everybody would see again.
RJD2 – Work It Out
This guy just want to have some fun with his crooks and his skateboard. A one-shot-video from 2007.

Very cool. Now in Smashing Videos. Good collection.
- 3January 21st, 2008 8:03 am
Thanks for this! We were searching like idiots for the song writer and title of Nick Cave & Kylie Mingoue — Where The Wild Roses Grow. Finally I can put it on my favourite songs list!
- 4January 21st, 2008 8:28 am
good list. it really is.
but i can’t help but always feel a little bit giped after the monday inspiration.
aren’t you guys do for a super-duper best of 2007 MEGALIST?! - 5January 21st, 2008 8:31 am
Brilliant collection.
Now get Rob Dougan’s ‘Clubbed to Death’ on there ;) - 6January 21st, 2008 8:37 am
Great stuff! Surprised that TOOL videos aren’t included. They are really peculiar.
- 7January 21st, 2008 8:37 am
The bat for lashes video is so weird, everytime I see it posted somewhere I have to check it out because it is so strange.
- 8January 21st, 2008 8:53 am
Nice collection. I like especially Royksopp – Remind Me .
- 9January 21st, 2008 8:59 am
I like Fat Boy Slim – Weapon of choice and Slash dot dash not is really good too!
- 10January 21st, 2008 9:01 am
Great collection. Though I’m a little surprised, not a single Spike Jones video?
- 11January 21st, 2008 9:03 am
Just a bunch of EMO trash.
- 12January 21st, 2008 9:10 am
Another cool collection.
RJD2 – Work It Out helped me a lot this monday…thanks! - 13January 21st, 2008 9:12 am
Maybe I’m just getting too old ( I barely recognize the names of the artists mentioned ), but personally I’m all for keeping record production costs – and thus album prices – down by forgoing expensive & extravagant video clips. IMHO they rarely contribute anything to the artistic value and more often than not the prohibitive costs have to be repaid by the artist to the record company. Horror stories are all over the web …
Just release your album privately without signing future earnings away, promote it by vigorous touring and the usual suspects on the web ( YouTube, MySpace etc. ).
Pay your dues and build a fan base solely on your artistical prowess instead of trying to get rich & famous overnight. Selling a mediocre album based on the false promise of an over-engineered video clip will get you nowhere in the end.
The crux of the matter is : can you sing & play any good live ?Call me old-fashioned if you like, but I’ll take this :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWOIeXzHLrs
over any example mentioned in the post above anytime …
- 14January 21st, 2008 9:24 am
it’s missing Otherside by RHCP, which is pretty a proper excercise of style
- 15January 21st, 2008 9:30 am
uh…some of these aren’t amazing at all.
- 16January 21st, 2008 9:40 am
I know it’s always difficult to pick a shortlist and you’ll always miss something but, I think it is a bit of an oversight not to include anything from Michel Gondry on the list. Something like Hardest Button to Button is genius. Especially since the video from Fujiya & Miyagi seems a little to close to White Stripes’ “Fell in Love with a Girl”.
- 17January 21st, 2008 9:40 am
Great stuff
and what about Praise You, from Spike Jonze, or this nice video? - 18January 21st, 2008 9:43 am
I usually enjoy your “Monday Inspiration”, but this list is pretty random, IMHO. This said, I’d like to add some more:
Massive Attack – Teardrop
The Chemical Brothers – Star Guitar
Fatboy Slim – Right Here, Right Now
some videos by Tool, especially “Schism” - 19January 21st, 2008 10:23 am
wrong link at RJD2 (linked to ‘just’ by radiohead instead)
- 20January 21st, 2008 10:35 am
One of the best video’s ever is also from the prodigy, but probably not suited for this list due to it’s R-rated content… here in the Netherlands the clip was only shown after 11pm due to its graphic nature, all this aside it’s a very good clip… The song I’m talking about is ‘Smack My B*tch up’…
- 21January 21st, 2008 11:08 am
Add this
Bjork – Anything!
Portishead – Glorybox
Jamiraquai – dude have style, no?
Beasty Boys – Any old skool videos with fake moustach and polyester trousers. - 22January 21st, 2008 11:29 am
Great collection and a lot of good bands and music.
Two radiohead videos plus Thom Yorke/Unkle.
Anyone knows where the quotes in that song come from??? Just a little quiz…
- 23January 21st, 2008 11:41 am
GREAT COLLECTION!!
ps. the hi-res link of “Unkle – Rabbit in your Headlights” is broken!
- 24January 21st, 2008 12:04 pm
Very surprised Pearl Jam’s “Do the Evolution” wasn’t included.
- 25January 21st, 2008 12:40 pm
What??? Star guitar is not on this list??????????
- 26January 21st, 2008 1:05 pm
Excellent Choice!
Thanks - 27January 21st, 2008 1:10 pm
again, good collection
- 28January 21st, 2008 1:39 pm

Björk | Bachelorette
Peter Gabriel | Sledgehammer
Pearl Jam | Do The Evolution
Johnny Cash | Hurt
Aphex Twin | Come To Daddy
Foo Fighters | Everlong
Metallica | One - 30January 21st, 2008 2:08 pm
The Sigur Ros video is possibly the most stunning visual I’ve seen online to date. I blogged about it back in 2005.
GREAT list, guys!
- 31January 21st, 2008 2:12 pm
I agree that “Where The Wild Roses Grow” is a great song with great video clips. I watch it many times when first time I saw.
- 32January 21st, 2008 3:11 pm
What? No Paranoid Android by Radiohead? Brilliant cartoon music video.

We’re missing some Chris Cunningham vids in there…
Bjork “All is Full of Love”
Leftfield “Afrika Shox”

Aphex Twin “Windowlicker” & “Come to Daddy”to name a few…
- 37January 21st, 2008 4:05 pm
White Stripes, Fell in Love with a girl (Lego animation) and The hardest button to button (clever duplication of band and equipment)
- 38January 21st, 2008 4:35 pm
This list is very good.
I was making a video web site for a while but gave up. During testing I packed it with a load of cool videos.
There are still quite a few there, it’s at http://www.vidplayr.com
Some of the best ones I found were:
Alex Gopher – “Child”
Air – “Sexy Boy”
Bjork – “Triumph of a Heart”
Royksopp – “Remind me” - 39January 21st, 2008 5:36 pm
RadioHead y Street Spirit , gran video, me encanta
Por otro lado muy buena lista, Saludos.—
Radiohead, Street Spirit . Great video, I love it.

- 43January 21st, 2008 7:39 pm
I would add Madonna’s “Ray Of Light” and almost anything by Björk
- 44January 21st, 2008 8:04 pm
How can you not post Prodigy – Smack my Bitch Up?!
Amazing video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNrhmbc0y_8
WARNING NOT SAFE FOR WORK
- 45January 21st, 2008 8:52 pm
What about Linkin Park… I really like their music and their videos. A lot f art on both of them.
- 46January 21st, 2008 9:20 pm
You forgot a really great video, based on a really great short story. Very artsy feel to it.
Man That You Fear – Marilyn Manson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soH8LQdsiac - 47January 21st, 2008 9:47 pm
Hahaha, you like Moby.
- 48January 21st, 2008 10:33 pm
what about muse – knights of cydonia?!
- 49January 22nd, 2008 12:06 am
I agree, Michel Gondry should be in there and Tool as well.
Radiohead’s Just was a mind blowing video when it came out, and 15 years later, no one still seems to know what the guy says. Well I do! He says “you do it to yourself.” As in, your messed up life is your own damn fault. All your problems are because of things you’ve done. So if everyone lays down and does nothing, they cant mess up their lives anymore. It’s the whole point of the song.
Its really not that difficult to figure out.
Great list though, thanks
- 50January 22nd, 2008 12:09 am
OK, but where is SIgur Ros?
- 51January 22nd, 2008 12:48 am
Nice list!
Chemical Brothers – Star Guitar and Bjork – Joga definitely should be on the list. Both directed by Michel Gondry. Heck, anything directed by Michel Gondry should be on the list.
- 52January 22nd, 2008 12:56 am
It is OK go – here it GOES again ;)
- 53January 22nd, 2008 1:37 am
I also like the video for ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley (video by Robert Hales).
- 54January 22nd, 2008 3:03 am
My #1: Clubbed To Death by Rob Dougan – awesome production :)
- 55January 22nd, 2008 4:02 am
Metallica | One, Metallica | One, Metallica | One, Metallica | One, Metallica | One :)
- 56January 22nd, 2008 4:17 am
I wrote a similar post a while back on my blog.
So check it out if you want to: http://djl-commercials.dk/blog/dennis/?p=48 - 57January 22nd, 2008 5:03 am
Where’s Pearl Jam’s “Evolution”?
- 58January 22nd, 2008 5:43 am
None from Michel Gondry = not a good list.
End. - 59January 22nd, 2008 5:59 am
I also think that at least one music video of Michel Gondry should have been included. The guy’s a genius!
Hardest button to button (The White Stripes)
Bachelorette (Bjork)
Come Into My World (Kylie Minogue)
Let Forever Be (Chemical Brothers)
Around The World (Daft Punk)
…Or maybe, you should make a list of all his videos, they’re all awesome.
- 60January 22nd, 2008 6:07 am
What? No Chris Cunningham?
This is poor. Stick to web design Smashing….
- 61January 22nd, 2008 8:25 am
Nice! I love The Verve’s song!
Thought I would add Snow Patrol’s “Open Your Eyes” and Coldplay’s “Scientist” ones :)
- 62January 22nd, 2008 2:17 pm
Bjork “All is Full of Love” still gives me the shivers when I watch it years later. best video ever IMHO.
- 63January 22nd, 2008 5:40 pm
I do like the Video of “Blur – Coffee & TV”, the cute milk box and his advanture. It’s awesome!
- 64January 23rd, 2008 2:08 am
So awesome to see Norway represented twice with Röyksopp and Xploding Plastix! Makes me proud to be one. :3
- 65January 23rd, 2008 3:06 am
I like Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal!
- 66January 23rd, 2008 6:10 am
Awesomo!!!
- 67January 23rd, 2008 7:16 am
Ditto. Where’s “Crazy” ?
- 68January 23rd, 2008 7:34 am
Great Collection to test on my New Woofer :-)
- 69January 23rd, 2008 8:13 am
Just a bunch of emo trash
I don’t think that means what you think it means…
- 70January 23rd, 2008 8:16 am
This list IS pretty poor, especially the 2007 choices. I cannot understand the obsession with Bat For Lashes. The RJD2 video is nice for its one shot thing, but other than that, meh. And the Fujiya & Miyagi? As I’ve noted previously and someone else did above, that’s basically just a ripoff of Gondry’s video for “Fell In Love With A Girl” by White Stripes.
And ignore the calls for Tool videos, seeing shit pushing through a pipe is not inspiring.
- 72January 24th, 2008 8:10 am
Forgot to mention before, kudos on including the UNKLE’s vid for Eye for an Eye, Shynola are fantastic, they also did Radiohead – Pyramid Song and Queens of the Stone Age – Go with the Flow.
- 73January 24th, 2008 11:39 am
totally, a coool list, that screams “where is gondry?”
useful link for mv buffs…the IMDB OF VIDEOS:
http://www.mvdbase.com/index.php
horrible design, but excellent library - 74January 24th, 2008 5:40 pm
Daft punk – around the world… revolution! :D
- 75January 25th, 2008 2:10 am
I’m not such a fan of her music but my wife absolutely loves Bjork
She’s got a whole lot of insane videos that seriously blow my mindI think Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine, Science of Sleep) has done a few of her videos.
I’d recommend you check em out. - 76January 25th, 2008 3:09 pm
I’m glad I see two Unkle videos in there – I love Unkle.
That said, it’s a shame not to mention the video clip for Burn my Shadow from their latest album, War stories.
The song is so haunting and the video clip is just amazing.
- 77January 26th, 2008 7:22 pm
awesome? but for the lack of North of Ping Pong, What Goes Up Must Come Down. this list is not yet complete.
- 78January 27th, 2008 7:34 am
Gondry makes the best videos so this list is definitely not complete
- 79January 28th, 2008 2:49 am
How could ou miss Royksopp – What Else Is There ?!!!
- 80January 28th, 2008 6:27 am
kox’s video for the citizens is simply stunning
- 81January 28th, 2008 12:43 pm
Some cool Vid’s smash. (y)
- 82January 30th, 2008 11:24 am
i understand this isn’t supposed to be a definitive list, but these are some really weak videos. you mention the daft punk video but not matthew sweet’s girlfriend? what about the video for “only” by nine inch nails directed by david fincher. it tops all these listed here. where’s the spike jonze directed videos? you want inspirational videos, at least put the directors up that have inspired others.
- 83February 2nd, 2008 1:22 am
The name of the OK Go song is “Here It Goes Again”.
- 84February 2nd, 2008 1:57 am
Sorry to come late to the party but you missed possibly the greatest video made in the past ten years:
- 85February 6th, 2008 10:08 am
You are missing SABOTAGE from Beastie Boys – best video ever =)
- 86February 6th, 2008 10:10 pm
youtube.com/mcadavieco
Playlist: videoclips.
I’m adding the ones on this list right now.
- 87February 8th, 2008 7:19 pm
Best video “Rabbit in your Headlights”, best song “Porcelain”
- 88February 8th, 2008 10:40 pm
Amazing Collection!!!
“Clubbed to death” by Rob Dougan is one of the most stunning, impressive song I’ve ever heard.
Also, I think you’ve missed a video.
“Exhibit 13″ by Blue Man Group
Preety dramatic. The most beautiful way to remember 9/11.
- 89February 12th, 2008 4:39 am
You have a great taste in music. Especially UNKLE, Radiohead and Sigur Rós are amazing music clips.
Great collection.
Best wishes - 90February 26th, 2008 11:23 am
Where are the White Stripes? Fell in Love with a Girl, Seven Nation Army, The Hardest Button to Button? They are all amazing videos!
Fatboy Slim, Weapon of Choice? Its Chistopher freakin’ Walken dancing around a hotel lobby! It doesn’t get any more amazing then that.
Crystal Method, Name of the Game. Where is it? A guy break dancing with a giant nose for a head is pretty amazing.
And finally, you included a Prodigy video that somehow wasn’t Smack My Bitch Up. Thats almost ridiculous.
- 91February 26th, 2008 8:24 pm
what, no beck – black tambourine?
- 92February 27th, 2008 8:26 am
yeah this is a grat collection but you all forgot Brand new’s sic transit gloria glory fades
- 93February 27th, 2008 9:59 am
Nick Cave & Kylie Mingoue — Where The Wild Roses Grow — the words for it are, well it was released very shortly after Isobel by Bjork, it copied the video.
- 94February 27th, 2008 2:56 pm
Nice list but no Chris Cunningham can’t have ‘em all
- 95February 28th, 2008 1:45 am
You Missed out “Fell in Love with a Girl” by the white stripes…
- 96February 28th, 2008 6:24 pm
I liked a lot of the songs on here. But was hoping to see an incredible video for Kenna’s “Hell Bent”.
It was an incredible video with a great concept. And i agree that Fell in Love With a Girl and any Tool video should be on there.
And of course Chris Walken in Weapon of Choice is incredible.
- 97February 29th, 2008 12:56 am
interstellar 5555, the movie that “one more time” the daft punk video is from is really really cool. I would recommend it to anyone who likes the ” one more time” video.
- 98March 8th, 2008 9:29 pm
Good list – one glaring missing video, though, is Unfinished Symphony by Massive Attack:
http://youtube/watch?v=y1svI-owtWANot only wholesale ripped offed by the Verve for the video, but the actual track as well! One shot brilliance – and the last 10 seconds where the camera lifts off has to make the list….
ooh, and Bjork “Its oh so quiet” should be their as well:
http://youtube/watch?v=g8Z1MpcyqQU
Not a dis, just my 10 cents!
- 99March 9th, 2008 11:14 am
You’re missing Knights of Cydonia by Muse. It’s the most hilariously epic music video I’ve ever seen.
- 100March 11th, 2008 7:54 am
no michael jackson????
your list is suxxx!!! - 101March 17th, 2008 3:17 pm
Very nice list. The Daft Punk mention makes me want to watch Interstella 5555 again.
- 102March 19th, 2008 5:22 pm
Strange Days or Weapon by Matthew Good.
- 103March 26th, 2008 1:51 pm
I just read 103 comments, and nobody mentioned badly drawn boy. I know he’s not really popular, but have you seen his videos? As far as uplifting goes, they are all really funny and upbeat, and if you haven’t seen them, you should check them out.
- 104April 3rd, 2008 7:41 pm
wonderful collection for sure! buuuuut. no gorillaz? just had to ask. ^^
- 105April 5th, 2008 3:36 pm
This page is dope. I’ven’t watched a music video in years.
- 106April 7th, 2008 8:04 am
needless to say that it sucks ass hard that you have the daft punk video in there but
the superb video to qeens of the stoneages “go with the flow” is missing……
so lame dude………………………………………. - 107April 7th, 2008 11:56 pm
SEARCHING;
I saw an awesome video the other night and I didn’t get the name. In it there was a man standing alone in a theater. As the video went on his face became the megaphone and he had a crank on his right ear. It was an incredible video with a woman singing. It was kinda hip-hopish.
ANY HELP
won23itsme@hotmail.com - 108April 16th, 2008 8:04 pm
My favorites include
The Scientist – Coldplay Similar to the Clubbed to Death video, but better in my opinion. (He had to memorize the whole song in reverse!)
Something Good 08′ – Utah Saints Funny video, good song, surprise ending. “It was the freshest move I’ve ever seen…”
- 109April 24th, 2008 12:11 am
I saw this music video at an airport once… it was in Sweden, so I doubt anyone has heard of it, but I’m really curious as to what it is.
It had a bunch of men in bear costumes, all of which with the same creepy smiling expression, dancing. That’s all I really remember.
Does anyone know of it?? - 110April 29th, 2008 5:07 am

hey, nice list, i got very excited because i thought i was about to find a video i’m looking for about 5 years, all i remember it’s made in cartoon style and it tells the story of a boy who landed in a strange planet, this boy was always running around and bursting flames from the feet, so the locals build this wheel machine where he could run to escape their planet. any1 knows the song/artist/album name??

My son loves this video clip I will try to describe it best I can. It has about 3 or 4 guys walking in a grayish rocky looking place with rock like thinks attached to their heads. They sort of multiply then go back to one as they walk along. Does any one know the band?
