(Really) Stunning Pictures and Photos
By Smashing Editorial, April 28th, 2008 in Inspiration | 814 Comments | Forum
Photography is a very powerful medium and a very difficult craft. Excellent photos don’t only display some facts — they tell stories, awake feelings and manage to share with the audience the emotions a photographer experienced when clicking the shot button. Taking excellent pictures is damn hard as you need to find a perfect perspective and consider the perfect timing. To achieve brilliant photography you need practice and patience. However, it is worth it: the results can be truly stunning.
Below you’ll find 50 brilliant photos and stunning pictures — some pictures tell stories, some are incredibly beautiful, some are funny and some are very sad.
All pictures are copyright of their respective owners. Please explore the further work of the photographers by browsing through their work. We’ve tried to cover different themes so that everybody will find something interesting and spectacular for himself / herself. All screenshots are linked und lead to the pages from which they’ve been taken.

bee (April 28th, 2008, 2:10 am)
Really great photos, thanks a lot for showing.
I can’t say which one I like the most. The golf ball is fantastic. Autumn in red also. And the bug family! Well, I like them all :)
Moritz (April 28th, 2008, 2:54 am)
Really incredible Photos!
Laura (April 28th, 2008, 3:02 am)
What’s happened to Smashing Magazine? Usually your posts are informative and well-written, the commentary provided on this post is banal. Most of it should just be alt text as it’s a just say-what-you-see. Bring back the posts with purpose!
FuNKeR (April 28th, 2008, 3:08 am)
I really love “Yaw? Weeeee”, “Family of bugs” and “Sea gull on a sign” :D They are great.
The rest of the collection is also brilliant, but these are my favorites.
Jonny Haynes (April 28th, 2008, 3:22 am)
Some of these have got to be the best photographs, I have ever seen. Ever!
gr8pixel (April 28th, 2008, 3:42 am)
simply amazing! :)
Vitaly Friedman & Sven Lennartz (April 28th, 2008, 3:46 am)
@Laura: thank you for your comment. We are not sure that these photographs need to be described any further. However, we’ll keep your remark in mind for the future posts.
RP (April 28th, 2008, 4:05 am)
Some very cool photos. The seagull on a sign isn’t real though.
Zarathustra (April 28th, 2008, 4:20 am)
Smashing is well out of its area of expertise here. Amongst other poor images are pictures of cats and dogs FGS. Get back on track hey? Or get some real photo experts on the team. Leave this sort of thing for the Flickr groups who know what they are talking about.
TechMalaya (April 28th, 2008, 4:39 am)
Stunning indeed. Bird on bird sign is one in a million.
Swapnil Sarwe (April 28th, 2008, 4:41 am)
Hii, Is the article posted by the individual in Mumbai. Its clear from the comment on the picture og guy peeping out of the train. Well thats the MUMBAI ki PEHCHAAN. really nice pics. Surely deserves bookmarking since its del.icio.us. kudos to poster from Aamchi Mumbai.
Anita (April 28th, 2008, 4:41 am)
Sigh. Greaaaat collection!
Lulz Killer (April 28th, 2008, 4:50 am)
Some excellent, some total shoops…. CHARGIN MA LAZUR!

I have to agree that smashing is somehow out of expertise with this post…. but there are some nice pictures also.
Chao,
Natrium (April 28th, 2008, 5:14 am)
This shot is taken on a Norway’s cliff Prekestolen (also known as Preacher’s Pulpit).
that is not Prekestolen. But the concept is the same.
YUI (April 28th, 2008, 5:19 am)
really stunning!
Jeff (April 28th, 2008, 5:19 am)
I completely agree.
K.K.Shankar (April 28th, 2008, 5:28 am)
Cool and Amazing Photos…..
Great collection with some repeated pictures.
Good. Kepp it up!.
Vitaly Friedman & Sven Lennartz (April 28th, 2008, 5:32 am)
@all commenters: please notice: this post wasn’t supposed to showcase the best works of professional photographers - that is a different area we’ll maybe cover in the future. The intention of this post was different - to showcase some interesting and unusual pictures taken in real life.
rahnefan (April 28th, 2008, 6:03 am)
Very, very nice.
mayur (April 28th, 2008, 6:18 am)
gr8 work man ……… awesome pic’s
Ardi (April 28th, 2008, 6:47 am)
OMG….say no more….
Paul (April 28th, 2008, 7:07 am)
I’m not really sure about this post, some of the images are great but it’s really let down by the animal portraits (I mean how many more cute dog shots does the world need?) and a few poor quality shots - the cloud formation on the Mount Fuji shot is amazing, but is it really a good photograph?
For me photography is all about the light, some shots here demonstrate that perfectly (autumn in red, a girl portrait), but some others just look flat. No offence intended, just my opinion
Rob (April 28th, 2008, 7:13 am)
There’re some nice photos there.. and of course, there’s nothing wrong with some nice photos.. But.. Personally I just expect more from this site - commentary, explanation - to learn or find out about something new - or have a trend or development pointed out where it wasn’t immediately obvious. I could have done without the kittens and puppies myself.. Which just goes to show that a list of photos assembled because they’re, well, nice, is pretty subjective - while a list of images showcasing some technique or trend has an undeniable value as something to learn from or be inspired by.
My two cents.
leszek pietrzak (April 28th, 2008, 7:17 am)
I knew the 11th picture before and indeed it is very beautiful. As of course are the other pictures.
Greg Holkan (April 28th, 2008, 7:31 am)
I’m pretty sure that picture of the seagull was photoshopped. The outline of the seagull on the sign matches the silhouette on the sign perfectly, and the texture of the paint in the silhouette doesn’t match the texture of the paint outside the silhouette.
But boy, wouldn’t it be funny if it were real?
Sophie (April 28th, 2008, 7:44 am)
Some nice photos here, but the seagull on the sign is a Photoshop job. Check out the silhouette of the gull and then the one on the sign beneath it.
poiza (April 28th, 2008, 8:24 am)
Incredibly tasteless and overloaded with post-edit color tweaking, making it completely lifeless. You guyz like cheap poretretists on the street or Andy Warhol? Please decide.
Stunning - waves, heights, cats and dogs? Those things appearing in your blog mark you as “first time in the internet” guy. Smashing? First time I see such a useless thread on this high-rated blog.
monchester (April 28th, 2008, 8:48 am)
Just see number 40 photo make me dizzy, the other pictures instead feelings of beauty, peace, understanding, excellent list
Ryan (April 28th, 2008, 8:56 am)
The title says it all. Thanks for sharing. I’ve linked to my blog.
radziu (April 28th, 2008, 9:11 am)
wow! i added this to my site too
4four1ones (April 28th, 2008, 9:18 am)
unreal. people are so damn creative. i love it. thanks for sharing this. ill link it up on my blog
beto (April 28th, 2008, 9:24 am)
I really liked the tree from the picture 5 and the leap of faith of picture 9.
Well, actually I liked them all xD
Cherish (April 28th, 2008, 9:29 am)
great post. these photoes really wake me up some fantastic mind for my website disign!!
Inspirations , always come from the “different perspective” u think from.
as Swimming pool and Yaw! weeeeeee !! =)
Anne (April 28th, 2008, 9:57 am)
quite boring, visual yes, but boring.
sorry.
Jeff (April 28th, 2008, 10:12 am)
Seriously… this post reminds me of those crappy emails that go around. Bird on a sign is obviously fake. The other photos aren’t that great. And theres no intelligent discussion as to why you guys think these are great. This is evidently a filler post. I await the next “real” post!
Richard Kendall (April 28th, 2008, 10:36 am)
Impressive collection of images. I have the Northern Lights seen from space as my desktop, i may have a few other options now.
It doesn’t matter if they are all real or who took them, if you appreciate interesting images, good photography and creative digital enhancement, then it’s a great compilation.
Catrine (April 28th, 2008, 10:39 am)
Those who criticize: you obviously don’t read the comments or have REALLY no idea about photography. Most of these pictures are indeed stunning, alhough it’s of course always quite subjective. Could you provide some links to pictures which you think are stunning! I’d like to see them!
Mario (April 28th, 2008, 10:50 am)
wow was für geile Fotos … Ich liebe diese Art fantastischer Fotographien!
need more!
Rob (April 28th, 2008, 10:58 am)
Sure, I could - and then you’d see my own personal taste in photos.. Which may or may not do nothing for you. That’s really the point. There’s not a lot here but some photos someone likes - there’s nothing wrong with them - some are great… But what’s the point? These might inspire some people, but certainly not everyone. On the other hand, a post about techniques used to make certain types of photos would be useful independent of what you think of the end product - since you can learn from that, experiment with it, get something other than an idea of someone else’s taste.
Even a post about something more specific than photos in general would be useful - photos taken at night, or portraits, or something - something to make a list like this a little more meaningful.
alex s (April 28th, 2008, 11:04 am)
these guys rock.keep it up buddies.
Paulo (April 28th, 2008, 11:08 am)
Great selection, great photographs ;)
Very well
BillyWarhol (April 28th, 2008, 11:42 am)
Some amazing photos for sure but a lot of them look downright Phony - i’d be curious to know how many came outta the Camera like that without being Pshopped to the nth Degree*
;)) Peace*
Mostafa (April 28th, 2008, 11:56 am)
thank god and thanks to photographers for their wonderful and beautiful ARTS!
Franoukwel (April 28th, 2008, 1:55 pm)
The cat’s eyes in #27 have also been photoshopped … :-/
Vitaly Friedman & Sven Lennartz (April 28th, 2008, 2:07 pm)
@Fraoukwel: no, the eyes haven’t been Photoshopped. Please take a look at the source.
rob (April 28th, 2008, 2:14 pm)
Love the photos, most of them amazingly creative.
I love the idea of the pool photo as if she was sitting against a very calm waterfall, I wanted to do a very quick manipulation on it, so she looked less stressed holding herself up.

Paolo Freschi (April 28th, 2008, 2:27 pm)
E’ bellissimo. Grazie.
Paolo
lutty (April 28th, 2008, 2:35 pm)
there are really amazing pictures here…
for photoshop and post production haters: every picture is (post) produced… every single picture is worked on from the setting, to the composition, to the exposure, to the film development, to the printing, to retouching; even before photoshop, it was always like that.
photoshop is just a digital tool that does basically the same thing people used to do (and still do, actually) with film and paper prints, just faster and less complicated (or is it?).
so just stop saying “that color is fake”, or “this is not professional stuff”, or “there’s nothing to learn with that”.. you’re wrong and you’re being mean, rude and hypocrite. there’s always something to learn, even if the picture was post produced (which only means it was still worked on after the exposure, and they ALL are), even if it doesn’t look great, even if the technique wasn’t the best…
just stop complaining and start contemplating people’s work. please!
well (April 28th, 2008, 4:46 pm)
This garbage is exactly why I stopped going to digg.
Skull0Inc (April 28th, 2008, 4:51 pm)
Gobsmackingly……briliant!
jenna x (April 28th, 2008, 6:59 pm)
the seagull one is fake, you can tell. like, really it is
rumblerumble (April 28th, 2008, 7:50 pm)
Sorry, but some of those are done by professional photographers. Sea in the Sea and Swimming Pool are pieces I’ve seen on the artists’ websites. You really should credit them.
rumblerumble (April 28th, 2008, 8:11 pm)
I can’t recall the name of the artist responsible for #18, but photo you call “Sea in a Sea” (#13) is from Julianne Swartz’ Placement series.
Link [www.julianneswartz.com]
Link [www.mixedgreens.com]
So much for “real life” snapshots.
Brent (April 28th, 2008, 9:08 pm)
I agree that some of the shots are truly amazing and beautiful, but the ones that are obviously put together in photoshop to me aren’t as impressive (and they are pretty easy to pick out)
You could easily hone this down to 20 photos that are truly stunning
brent
Pelardo (April 28th, 2008, 11:13 pm)
these shot’s are wicked!!!!

I thought this post might be a right place to post it :)
Zarathustra (April 29th, 2008, 12:14 am)
Sorry to post again, but I have to elaborate. The editors should note that this post is the first time I have been sorely disappointed in Smashing for over a year. Sometimes articles don’r appeal “to me”, but they are still quality articles. This is just way off-topic, poorly researched, commented and presented. Only if you packaged these into an email, put my aunties address on it and mailed it to me could I be more let down. Very, very poor. In fact a waste of my time, which is worse.
kuldeep (April 29th, 2008, 12:31 am)
Browse through my Flickr favs …you’ll get better photos than this…
my id: “cooldeep…”
OohShiny (April 29th, 2008, 12:38 am)
I liked most of the photos, but the comment “Mt Fuji [...] The photo is taken in Japan” was painfully inane.
coltrane (April 29th, 2008, 1:24 am)
These shots are ones that a programmer would have been impressed with a couple of years ago! I love smashing mag but I have to say two turkeys in a row! Get the design glasses back on…
Senfli (April 29th, 2008, 1:47 am)
I think the photos are pretty. But I miss a lot artistic ideas in the expression, originality and statement.
Arun (April 29th, 2008, 2:58 am)
Truly stunning pictures with great clarity and given importance to every single detail of the picture.
Nischal Shetty (April 29th, 2008, 3:08 am)
Amazzzzing pics…. Just one word to describe them… WOW!!!
Zarathustra (April 29th, 2008, 3:51 am)

Photoshoped big time.
I hate these persons
Untitled (April 29th, 2008, 11:47 am)
I totally agree with some of the previous user comments. The only image worthwhile viewing is the fourth image. This post was just a filler, especially with those animal images.
I still love smashing magazine though so please bring back good quality content.

awesome pictures,really enjoyed m.
Sylvia (April 29th, 2008, 12:56 pm)
I really think the photo of the cockfight should not have been posted. There is nothing stunning about it. It’s a shame people still hold cockfights, and the only reason to post such a photo would be to draw people’s attention to this, to make them realize this really is bad. But instead, you post this photo between some really great (and some less interesting, but that’s my opinion…) photos without a word about the cruelty behind it.
my 2 cents, I still really like smashing magazine :-)
Andy (April 29th, 2008, 3:45 pm)
how are these sad?
tomb (April 29th, 2008, 3:53 pm)
Not too bad, but I also could have gone without seeing the cockfight photo. just the mere posting if it in any context to me is glorifying a despicable act.

As a photographer, I love posts like this. From a design vs. bandwidth standpoint I am encourage that you included so many images in your post. I tend to stay away from including more than 5 images that size. I’m probably living in a time years ago before high speed internet was around.
I might start listing my Link [artrogue.com]` with the full size images in line. I’m just thinking.
Great photography and very inspiring. The world is an amazing place and it’s the photographer’s job to interpret and express it.
Matt Mikulla (April 29th, 2008, 8:13 pm)
@Sylvia
The image of the cockfight I think is a truly amazing image. The subject matter may be morally reprehensible, but sometimes photographers and photo editors must side on presenting truth and reality. Think of the images that real combat / war photographers present to us. Think of the images burned into our minds from the holocaust. Evocative, powerful, and instructive.

Those of you that think you are all high and mighty and come here and slam this post with your demeaning comments and think you know all there is to know about photography need to get off your computers and go back to school and take a pre-photography 101 class. You need to go find out what real photography is all about. It’s not about perfect this or perfect that or something being completely free of post camera tricks. It’s what’s in the photographers eye and it’s what the photographers brain interprets as that image in the eye as it should be on paper and if that image on paper is a quality representation of what the photographer was attempting to convey then who are you to tell us or the photographer that these images on this post are worthless dribble? Start all over with your photography education my friends and dump those expensive fancy overpriced digital cameras that you think make you great photographers. Go build your own little darkroom and spend about five years making images with a homemade shoe box pin hole camera. Then bring your results here and let US critique them. Until then learn to be nice and offer positive criticism. I for one find many of these images quite stunning and I have been studying photography and taking pictures for forty years. I have many awards for pictures much less stunning an impressive than most of these. Kudos to you smashing for rising above those that choose to be close minded and view the world with blinders on.

Is it just me, or is “Seagull on a Sign” a fake? The bird on the sign and the bird on top of the sign have the EXACT SAME OUTLINE. That’d be just shy of impossible, if not completely impossible.

Someone (April 30th, 2008, 9:12 am)
Amazing photos. The caption of photo number 3 is inaccurate. The sky is not “reflected,” simply, the drop acts as a simple lens, inverting the image. Great work thought!

no puedo dejar de admirarme con estas fotografías, esto es arte puro… gracias!
charlie (April 30th, 2008, 2:08 pm)
im pretty sure the bird one is fake. the outlines are identical.
still rad though.
noone (April 30th, 2008, 3:20 pm)
You’re right, the one with the seagull is a photoshop. Why would there be a no seagulls sign? Do they really expect them to obey? Unless it means, ‘don’t feed the seagulls’. In any case, it’s fake, because the silohuette is exactly the same.
This picture is as old as the internet.

these photographs are awesome, but the short description/comment on them is irritating. before i can see the photograph, i’m confronted by someone else’s opinion on it. it doesnt allow me to appreciate the photo or form my own opinion on it. instead of putting it before the photograph, you could put it afterwards with a couple of linebreaks in between, or better still, put it as an alternate text so that a mouseover brings it up.
i hope you’ll keep this in mind in future posts.

Red Cedar (May 2nd, 2008, 12:36 pm)
Whether these were done by “artsists” or “amateurs” where are the photocredits? Have you asked permission from the photographers to make money from their work in this way? This type of image rip-off has become all too common - I am curious how you justify it?
Quicky (May 2nd, 2008, 6:04 pm)
I agree with the previous post by Red Cedar. How do you justify displaying people’s without asking permission from the photographers?
Jasper (May 3rd, 2008, 2:30 am)
Although I love most of the pictures displayed, I don’t like them all. Not all of them are as good as I expect them to be at Smashing Magazines. “Cat and deer”, “Leap of Faith” and “Photograph Taken at the Exact Right Time” are funny, and I would be very proud if they were my vacation pictures, but great timing doesn’t make a picture great. And we’ve seen the water drops falling a thousand times before. Furthermore, I agree with Red Cedar and jovianjokerjoe. This is not a bad post, its a bad Smashing Magazine post. It’s not as good as others at Smashing Magazine, and that’s a shame. I hope next posts will be as good as the ones before this one.

This is at Scott, who seems to dislike critics from non-photo-veterans. Scott, our (speaking for those who feel just as attacked by you as I do) lack of experience with photography, doesn’t make us incapable of judging an image. Although we probably won’t be able to explain why we feel about a picture as we do, as you could, we still feel something when we look at it. And that is, I think, the essence of a good photo. Let me explain.
I don’t believe photography is about “what’s in the photographers eye and what the photographers brain interprets as that image in the eye as it should be on paper and if that image on paper is a quality representation of what the photographer was attempting to convey then who are we and so on“. Because art (photography is art, I’m sure you agree) is about feelings. Art creates feelings, feelings create art. Art creates fashion, fashion creates feelings, feelings creates art.
What a photographer sees, what image he creates in his head, if this image is formed by the artists feeling, and how successful he is in enrapturing that feeling in his final picture (with or without photoshop), will in the end determine if the result is a photo, or a snapshot. And whoever you are, experienced or not, looking at a real photo, you can understand, you live trough his moment, you feel that feeling.
There are photo’s in this post, that lack that experience. Snapshots. Photo’s that don’t make me feel. They make me think, maybe, but not feel. I don’t get connected with the photographer. I don’t need 40 years of holding a camera for that. I just have to be human.
Some of these photo’s are snapshots.

#40. Is incorrectly labeled. While it may be in Norway, that is not “Preikestolen”. Do an image search and you will see, plus I have been there and I knew Preikestolen, Preikestolen was my friend, and senator, you are no Preikestolen.

Chris (May 5th, 2008, 8:10 pm)
Truly amazing pictures. A lot of them make me appreciate what our beautiful world has to offer. And why do so many think the seagull picture is fake? Because it’s ironic? Chill out people.

photoshopped all the way baby!
One of the most obvious examples? The seagull on the sign… clearly the seagull image on the sign is the same as the one standing on the sign. Look at the outline…enough said. Way to over-glorify some mediocre shots that were digitally manipulated extensively (or faked all together) to make them look like more than they ever, EVER were.

Who set the standard? only you yourself has created the standard, but Good Job Smashing Magazine..

To comment # 128 by “noone” : Yes, thank you. That’s what struck me as soon as I saw the “photograph”. At first, I thought it was funny that the bird was in the same position as the one on the sign, then I realized it could not possibly have perfectly mimmicked every angle and curve. I was frustrated that someone’s digital alteration project was posted on a website labeled “(Really) Stunning Pictures and Photos”. Let’s hail with actual talent behind the camera.

Muse (May 14th, 2008, 8:06 am)
very stunning. Seen most of them in DeviantArt - which the artist claim been ripped off or stolen. After seeing and stumbling many amazing photographs in different sites and photographers claiming the photos belong to them, I’m not sure ‘who stole who’….. But credits should be given to the real people who took them… I feel sorry for them though….
NUBLET (May 14th, 2008, 8:45 pm)
PHOTOSHOPPED!!!!!!!!!!
PhotoG (May 15th, 2008, 7:41 am)
Muse, which photos are the artists claiming are stolen? That’s a bold statement to throw around without citing any examples.
Some of these are photoshopped, but most of them are not. I think there’s some fantastic work here. Good photography? Most definitely.
carla (May 15th, 2008, 7:46 am)
The one with the bird oon a sign cant be real, the bird is in the same position and has the exact same silouhette!
Also the flower one ‘refashioned daliah’ looks like it has been drawn to me!
Other than that absolutely great!
cliphord (May 15th, 2008, 5:18 pm)

jay (May 16th, 2008, 8:29 am)
To cliphord: Not all photography should be pain and suffering. There are such a vast amount of emotions in the world, why only concentrate on the bad? I would absolutely love to see photographers show me something more than the sad, unjusts of the world. I WANT REALITY ALONG WITH DREAMS!!!
And these landscapes, are beautiful! The first is my absolute favorite, and I can see why you put in as number 1.

Those “right time” shot are exceptional. Bravo They aught to be put on billboards instead of those may meaningless ones. Beautify or towns and cities with talent and exppression such as yours. I thank you for your sharing and bid you continued drive and success…
Peter (May 16th, 2008, 10:10 pm)
Absolutely exquisit: I’ll have to review them many times. I applaud the work of the artist or artists.
CC (May 17th, 2008, 6:12 am)
Makes me want to look for the “moment” to capture. Reminds me of the Jacobean poets who would go from the large flights of mind to the miniscule…the beauty in the water droplets vs the sweeping clouds. Nice juxtaposition …and I like the philosophical discussion of art in photo vs snapshots.
Photoshop must have changed the saying to: a picture is worth a thousand lies. Good to be wary, but why not enjoy the impact of the picture?
Mina (May 17th, 2008, 7:50 am)
All of the pictures above are realy astonishing, specially pictures which clrealy indicate “right time” capturing of the nature. The picture Polar Light is very impressive.

Damm, wheres my camera…
LeeAnna (May 17th, 2008, 9:54 am)
Very interesting pictures! Creative ideas. there are some that could be better…but overall, nice job. I really enjoyed Taw? weeee.
Girl and water, bee the cat, seagull on a sign (cute idea), bird and meat, bird and water, cockfight, and family of bugs ( I have done many ladybug pictures my self)
Even if these aren’t “real photography” like some might say, there are real art. They have impact!!! SO as an artist a give you an A for the day:) ~LeeAnna
Tessa (May 17th, 2008, 6:49 pm)
Very nice photos, but cockfighting is illegal in most places. I sure wouldn’t want my name attached to a photo like that, even if it is legal where it was taken. It’s a cruel sport and most people don’t want to have any part in it.

blew my fragile little mind away. enuff said
Steve (May 18th, 2008, 3:30 am)
I bought myself a digital SLR last Christmas. These pictures make me feel like throwing it away. If I ever produce a photograph half as good as some of these, it would make me a very happy man.

Sara (May 18th, 2008, 7:52 am)

Jan (May 18th, 2008, 10:05 am)
Some of the photos are very beautiful but these are mostly the ones which are taken of natural landscapes, anything staged (like the gull, golfball or cat, child, goldfish) lacks in potency. Good work, but photography really is a lot about having the right instinct
Nannette (May 19th, 2008, 6:13 am)
absolutly inspiring…some touch deeper than others…staged are hard ones…some relate and some don’t…I think you covered a lot of areas for viewing pleasure…thank you
Danny (May 19th, 2008, 6:31 am)
I sorry but anybody that didn’t like these pictures should go somewhere else, because I thought that these pictures were better that the ones that I take with my camera. WOW!!! That’s all I can say!

Lisa (May 19th, 2008, 11:18 am)
49 of these pictures are indeed beautiful, whether real or not, I do however find #45 to be disturbing as cockfighting is a cruel, vicous and disgusting “sport” that I don’t find to be beautiful at all and wish that it hadn’t been included in with these others.
Paul (May 19th, 2008, 1:01 pm)
beautiful
Helen Hawk (May 19th, 2008, 2:18 pm)
I love the catching of beauty in a moment in time as these photos all do with the exception of the “cockfighting” - these is nothing beautiful in what these animals are required to do without asking their permission.

Phil (May 20th, 2008, 4:38 am)
Ted Danson is the greatest actor of our time! The pictures are ok, I guess. Seriously, have you guys ever seen Cheers?
Charlotte (May 20th, 2008, 9:05 am)
I agree w/Angie - the cock fight photo is awful and should not be included.
ANTONIO CARLOS PATROCINI DA SILVA (May 20th, 2008, 9:42 pm)
Photo fantastique, oh yesssssssssssss!!!!
Mariarosa6 (May 21st, 2008, 3:34 pm)
I really enjoyed seeing everyone one of these photo’s. Some more than others. Those that have such negative opinions should just keep there LOUSY comments to themselves, and let those that ENJOY them do just THAT….enjoy.
Radhakrishna (May 21st, 2008, 9:21 pm)
Pictures are superb, i have made posters of few of them
geeky (May 22nd, 2008, 1:10 am)
The images are “unreal”, colors are unreal, light is unreal. It is OK to tweak an image a little, but face it, these colors & light combinations are not available in nature. That is exactly why you like these, because they are unreal, dreamy, movie-like.
Many of you who like these pictures will not get the same joy from pictures of pre-computer era. In those oldies, skies are sky blue, not parliament blue.
sudarshan (May 22nd, 2008, 1:37 am)
Amazing ! all photoes are very nice. I can’t compare.
mr copenhagen (May 22nd, 2008, 4:09 am)

Sai Krsihna P (May 22nd, 2008, 6:18 am)
truly stands for the title…
diatz (May 22nd, 2008, 10:58 am)
the poster “bob” who commented that these are photoshop pictures is an idiot, same with the people who are crying about the cock fight. keep your self-righteous, tree-hugging opinions out of it and just recognize art for what it is.
mili (May 22nd, 2008, 7:50 pm)
The professional photography. Truely nice to see.
Jono (May 23rd, 2008, 5:27 am)
I agree, the silhouette matches the bird perfecftly. And despite the texture of the paint - why on earth would there be a sign prohibiting seagulls? Who’s it for?
Rogerio E. Izidorio - Brasil (May 23rd, 2008, 7:42 am)
Simplesmente fantátisco.
Stanwise (May 23rd, 2008, 4:18 pm)
Are you looking at photographs to see beauty, to see reality, or to see art?
That’s the answer to all the complaints on this page. If you’re looking for beauty, the cockfight is abhorrent because it shows blood and cruelty. If you’re looking for reality, the cockfight is just a piece of the good and the bad that the world has to offer, but the seagull image and many of the other edited ones are artificial. If you’re looking for art, then some of the cute animal photos are a waste of time.
Just accept that everyone has different priorities when they look at photos on the internet.
Abid (May 23rd, 2008, 6:53 pm)
stunning outstanding mind blowing
SAMIR (May 23rd, 2008, 11:08 pm)
ALL THE PIC R VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL
matt (May 24th, 2008, 7:58 am)
um I hope you know that some of these are photoshoped, like the bird on the sign. but these photos are beautiful, (even some of the other photoshoped ones) and to Geeky, I also Hope you know what you are talking about, think about the professional photographers in the old days, take a look at the pulitzer prize photos and then look at ansel adams and tell he used a computer for those! even the old photographers could tweak their photos in the dark room! but yes some of these are photoshoped and for the people who say that they aren’t take a look at worth1000.com and study those for a while.
Katia (May 24th, 2008, 11:40 am)
extremely impressive pictures.

henry (May 27th, 2008, 8:15 am)
awesome!!!
Horst Engels (May 27th, 2008, 9:42 pm)
The picture of the cock fight is beautiful because of the drama in the scene, the composition, and the way the photographer filtered it to make it stark and colorful at the same time.
It doesn’t matter that the image “makes you sick” or that the activity “is illegal.” The artistic composition of the piece is fantastic, and has caused you, and others, (myself included) to briefly ponder an activity that normally we wouldn’t even think about. Thus, the photographer has raised consciousness of the issue, and in a subtle and constructive way.
job (May 28th, 2008, 2:31 am)
Tasteless and garish
Max (May 28th, 2008, 9:04 am)
Puhleeeze …
Photograph/snapshot/picture … whatever.
Photoshop/”real” … whatever.
So, you know about photography. Bully!
Why can’t people just relax and enjoy?
Neither I nor, I am sure, many of the other commentors could never create any of these photos. It made me happy to view thm.
All the rest is “sound and fury signifying nothing”.
sangeet agarwal (May 28th, 2008, 11:41 pm)

I have enjoyed looking at all the images especially the black and white potrait of the girl. Its one of those photographs that haunt you whenever you look at it.
Michelle (May 31st, 2008, 4:38 am)
Wow, these pictures are unbelievable! I specially love the one of the water drop on the pink flower, the reflection is fantastic. The last photo of the little girl, its breath taking, the way the light hits her face and the hair is slightly windblown. Brilliant!
Massimo Meijer (May 31st, 2008, 7:39 am)
Lovely!
Jealousy Personified (May 31st, 2008, 10:31 am)

Insert envy here.

Nice, but a number of them have been heavily photo-shopped, so you really can’t call them photographs anymore.
Manish Anand (June 3rd, 2008, 6:15 am)
The beauty of the images render a lot of peace and tranquility to the disturbed mind.

Stunning indeed!
Pompanoosprey (June 8th, 2008, 7:48 am)
I enjoyed the photos. I feel sorry for people who can’t simply enjoy the beauty and creativity of others. I don’t really care if these are professional photographers, photo editors, or just people capturing moments in time. Why not just sit back, take a deep breath and enjoy the view!
Bobbi (June 8th, 2008, 4:37 pm)
we all know what is said about opinions.
I think the photos are beautiful.
Jenn (June 8th, 2008, 6:40 pm)
I def. agree that these are AMAZING photos. Some of you need to keep your opinions to yourself and just enjoy what you see. Who cares where it came from or how it was done. It is posted here for you to enjoy. So if you dont like it.. then keep it to yourself. But me on the other hand.. i truely enjoy every single picture :)

Philippe Roy (June 18th, 2008, 6:23 pm)
Very beautiful series, I’m certainly glad I stumbled upon this. Some of the photos here I’m not sure I would charactarise as “beautiful photos” but rather strong/beautiful moments…
Someone up there in the comments said that some of these photos are so photoshopped that you can’t call them photos anymore… I couldn’t disagree more. They are still photos. Call it a meeting of two arts on one platform. PhotoShop is now an integral part of modern photography, just as much as silver-nitrate was in the past century.
Barbara007 (June 18th, 2008, 10:27 pm)

With the title being (Really) Stunning Pictures and Photos, I was expecting to see some (really) stunning pictures and photos. But by the first image alone, I was thinking, what the hell is this? Most of these aren’t photos, they’re… images. Images put together by digital artists, nice, but not what I’d call photos.

Stunning pictures, yes! but personally I do not approve of a photo that are not “true”. I realize that this is subjective, as all post processing alters what was captured, but if you take it as far as some of the pictures in the collection why bother with photo. Start painting instead.

Hi my Mum always said if you can t say something nice don t say anything at all. Some people are obviously still trying to get themselves up to that level, going by some of the comments. Anyone who said things unpleasant about these photos obviously needs to open their eyes and that is surely what photography is about. It s the beauty behind the photograph that we the viewer are being invited to see and experience. Having shared this joy first hand may I say you are doing a good thing with the invitation, one day when people see nature they will eventually learn how to love it respect it and take care of it. It could be heaven on earth. . . . . Thanks
Raj (November 14th, 2008, 8:46 am)
Agree to vicky’s comments and the photographs make you feel the beauty of life.
A salute to photographer and while watching the photographs, i felt as i am there ,really u have taken world’s beauty on small paper and this is all about your job.
Great Job!!!!!!!!
Continue this so that we will feel the beauty of world through your eyes.
Danny (November 14th, 2008, 3:47 pm)

Ben (November 18th, 2008, 9:24 am)
I truly enjoy others’ photos. It’s like seeing thru the eyes of the photographer. As far as negative comments, any photographer appreciates honest critique of their work, but, how can anyone say they did not like all of the photos. I’m sure that it is easy for the photographer to ignore these boneheaded nasty comments. I also agree that there’s an art to adding photoshop techniques and still have it appear as art. I’m sure the same was said about photography by paint artists when photography was first invented. Art is art, no matter how it was created. I do respect those that think that photo art should be done in the camera, but, I think they are a dieing breed.

RJ Peters (January 15th, 2009, 1:22 pm)
Since when is a photo of a cockfight beautiful, smashing, artistic or even interesting? Maybe it has a place in some evidence room for an abuse case, but not in a collection of “art” photography.
Also, it’s pretty easy to come up with a “great” photo when the subject is a cute animal.
Loved the scenery shots and will use some of them for wallpaper… who cares if any of them were Photoshopped?
lover82 (January 15th, 2009, 5:34 pm)

You have some of the MOST BEAUTIFUL pictures I have ever seen..
are these mostly edited, or posted as they were shot??
annoyed@meanies (February 2nd, 2009, 5:58 pm)
um to all those ppl who posted the dumb comments-chill…. even if u dont apppreciate photoshop etc, no need 2 b rude and act like no it all. bet u couldnt do half as well, so easy on the criticism— + even with pshop, ppl still enjoyed the shots.
Robyn McIntyre (February 5th, 2009, 3:44 pm)
Professional or amateur - they are stunning photographs. Although I think the photograph is colourful, well composed, etc, I have to point out that cockfighting is not sport - it’s cruel to take advantage of an animal’s instincts for amusement or money.
ramadas (February 7th, 2009, 1:04 am)

Peter (February 13th, 2009, 9:21 pm)
I am stunned and amazed, these are absolutely beautiful. A couple of comment posters, if I understand their wording, are actually picking fault with what’s presented here. Apparently the work done by them is even better. How nice to be that good at something!

Andrew Ulinski (February 18th, 2009, 8:46 am)
The seagull on the sign is clearly a doctored photo. the picture on the sign is simply a silhouette of the seagull on top of it.
Anybody can edit a photo. it takes true skill to capture images such as “Mt. Fuji”, or “Glow”.

These pictures should truly remarkable pictures, but some of the ones ( like the ones listed above) were not that remarkable or unique so I feel they should not be part of the top 50.
All in all though, most of them were just splendid
Thank you for sharing them with us. =)

Amazing pix. The “Bird and Water” is really nice and interest stiring as well. The water drops r clear enough but the neck shaking makes it seem like a drilling machine in action.

looks like someone at Smashing got one of those “bored housewife” inspirational emails and decided to publish it online as a collection.
Some of the subject matter is interesting, but the shots are very plain - even boring.

For those who have comments about photos being manipulated in Photoshop, I am thinking that all of you really know how to use this program? More power to Smashing Magazine!
