Free Fonts Of The Month: Freebooter Script, Cora Basic
Every now and again we take a look around, select “fresh” high-quality free fonts and present them to you in a brief overview. The choice is enormous, so the time you need to find them is usually the time you should be investing in your current projects. We search for them and we find them, so you don’t have to.
This month we are glad to present you Freebooter Script, Cora Basic Regular, Walkway and Karabine. Please read the license agreements carefully — they can change from time to time.
- Free Fonts Of April features GrauBlau and Nevis.
- You can find over 80 more free fonts in our section Fonts.

May 12th, 2008 2:04 pmGreat finds, once again.
Now here’s a related question, and perhaps one shared by other fontophiles: Is there a better font than MyriadPro for tight fitting text? Or rather, the condensed players in this family.
IMHO it beats Helv. Neue family, as well as any of the other standard condensed sans serif families.
I’d like to hear of other folk’s experience with tight-fitting condensed fonts that read well even with over-tracked spacing.
Maybe this inquiry might make a post of it’s own?

May 13th, 2008 1:27 amFreebooter Script is not a quality font. When it’s enlarged it looks really ugly!

May 13th, 2008 5:41 amFreebooter Script is free for commercial work, and as such being free, is not up to the standards of commercial work, its free why complain ? It was a quick fix from a scan job of a finepoint texta done on standard paper.

May 13th, 2008 5:47 amWalkway, also by Graham Meade, you may find a few small problems using the font, as it was an unfinished demo set that was never intended for internet release. One of the people a beta set was sent to for testing posted it on a few sites and this is the version that is now only available. It is freeware and has all the characters, but the spacing and kerning was not completed.

May 13th, 2008 8:24 amOne of our clients used Walkway exclusively. As far as this font looks nice, it is nowhere near usable for professional design. Having to babysit every pair of letters was a serious pain and it was just a start of inconsistencies. Working with fonts like these makes you appreciate the $400+ families.
I’m glad that the client moved to a cheaper agency that doesnt care about keming.

May 13th, 2008 9:13 amok, once again a strong recommendation for all free typo fans to have a look at this page: Fonstruct.com… You’ll see why!
Btw, @smashing team: i think it’s actually worth being mentioned in you next typography post…

May 13th, 2008 10:16 amIt’s odd… on Firefox the form doesn’t work: error “HTTP_REFERER”, even though my browser it’ ok, I just followed the link posted here(I mean you don’t expect me to manually edit the HTTP_REFERER just to get a stupid font?!), but on IE it seems ok. Thanks :P

May 14th, 2008 5:41 am@shasta: The link you provided leads to a cyber-squatter jump page because of a typo. (You forgot the T in fontshop.com ;) ) Corrected Link FontStruct looks like a pretty awesome tool BTW.
@everyone: What the heck ever happened to the legit typographers of Apostrophic Lab for that matter? It’s like one person caused the mass-disappearance of a lot of really good font makers like Graham Meade, Derek Vogelpohl, and others.

May 14th, 2008 11:17 amThe Cora font offer is apparently ended already… 2 days only?!?! what the hell…
“The promotion ended, i am afraid.”
Grey
May 15th, 2008 10:08 pmAgree with Casey here. What kind of promotion is that?! I checked the article (dunno what the hell is Walkway doing here, it is *really* hideous), tried to download Cora and – nothing. Promotion ended. Well, thanks for that kind of promotion. Eh, I am wondering why people use warez fonts then, hm?

May 16th, 2008 12:24 amApostrophic lab run for approx 2 years, then fell in a hole due to a number of circumstances. One such being Greenbay Font Cd Collection. The site had a stricyt policy that the freeware fonts were in absolutely no way to be included in any form of compilation CD, but they did it and sold the stuff. The Fontmakers individually decided that they were no longer interested in doing free work so other parasites to make money off them. and it just ground down.
I hear Derek may be soon making a comeback after being out of the scene for three years, most of the others either started commercially, left the scene totally, or greatly reduced their free work.
As stated, Walkway was not intended for release in the form you have it, again due to someone not interested in the designers wishes, and purely for a one upmanship thing. Yes Walkway is horrendous, I know because I made it.

I quite like news gothic, for tight text, I wouldn’t call it better than myriad pro, but nice to have another option even if it is a fraction wider.
