We Have Won Webinale Awards 2008!
In April we have written that Smashing Magazine has been nominated for the Most Valuable Design Website in the Webinale Awards 2008, the award of an international Web conference Webinale which took place in Karlsruhe, Germany on May 26 – 28. The competition awards most useful and innovative sites related to design and technology. We believed that together with thousands of further smashing readers you can make a difference. And indeed, you made a difference.
Good news for you and for us, folks: we have won the Webinale Awards 2008. We have competed against the prominent CSSBeauty and AListApart, but your support was literally overwhelming. As the prize we have won 5.000 € which we would like to invest in the Smashing Magazine to be able to publish more useful, creative and inspirational articles and release more free high-quality icons, fonts and Wordpress themes.
For those of you who weren’t able to attend the conference: on May 26-28 Vitaly Friedman, the chief-editor of Smashing Magazine, was in Karlsruhe attending the event. He has also given a talk “Designtrends 2008: What’s Next?” (.pdf, 10 Mb) which covers current trends in web-development and examples of modern web-design. And now you can download the slides in English among other things in our Smashing Freebies section.
We express sincere gratitude to each and every one of you out there, in the wild designer’s landscape across the globe — for voting for us and supporting us in the competition. Without you we definitely would not win the award. Your support means a lot for us, we appreciate it and we are going to pay you back. Thank you!

Well, it is your decision. Since we wouldn’t be able to win without your support, the money is ours as well as yours which is why we would like you to decide how it will be spent.

Congratulations, it’s awesome to see you guys being recognized by your great efforts. Smashing is the most phenomenal site I found on the last few years,
I think you should spend the money on the site itself. Hire a good programmer which could customize this Wordpress installation of your to add functionality for easier navigation on previous resources. Smashing has tons of valuable content, I think it should be more like a wiki than a blog.
Also it would be great to add user submissions on a separate area, with the good ones being displayed on the main site, like the SEOmoz guys do with the YOUmoz UGC blog.

As for what to do with the money:
used the money on some sound recording equipment/software. start a podcast. i’m interested in listening to interviews with designers/developers. i find it a lot more intriguing to listen to a voice interview, than reading a transcript text.
i think this will add a whole new level of content to a sucessful site such as yours.

Congratulations on the victory. You guys deserve it. SmashingMagazine is one of the best sites on the web, which really does provide useful information. Keep up the good work guys.
As for the prize money, i would advise to spend it on maintaining the site and keeping things up and running. If not, then atleast spend it on making some design contests, since there are probably lots of eager designers here, who wish to improve their skills and in my opinion contests are a great opportunity to do so. There is no need to spend it on making free stuff, like fonts, icons and templates. The internet is full with resources, yet good articles on design are scarce.
Anyway, good luck on whatever SmashingMagazine staff decides to do. Yet again i must say, keep up the good work.

- contests: because then we will all see really inspiring work, that you will not find simply by googleling
- more tutorials on video and animation technices for the web. like final cut studio with motion and workflow with flash.

Though I agree you are one of the best sites, due to your broad approach,
I think the specific information provided by alistapart.com are far more useful.
Besides, the awards were organized by an organization focussing on Germany,
you were even among the speakers of the conference and thus i think you had some home field advantage!
Anyway don’t get me wrong I love smashingmagazine, its one of my dailies!

I believe more contests are in order, since those mean getting more rep, prizes (tools for production, design, entertainment, funds to invest buying fonts, vectorpacks, iconpacks, themes, etc.) I believe some constests, like the last, texture contes, also yield even more resources.
So all the more power to contests……see waht good it did (for) smashing?
