Congratulations, it’s awesome to see you guys being recognized by your great efforts. Smashing is the most phenomenal site I found on the last few years,

I think you should spend the money on the site itself. Hire a good programmer which could customize this Wordpress installation of your to add functionality for easier navigation on previous resources. Smashing has tons of valuable content, I think it should be more like a wiki than a blog.

Also it would be great to add user submissions on a separate area, with the good ones being displayed on the main site, like the SEOmoz guys do with the YOUmoz UGC blog.

As for what to do with the money:

used the money on some sound recording equipment/software. start a podcast. i’m interested in listening to interviews with designers/developers. i find it a lot more intriguing to listen to a voice interview, than reading a transcript text.

i think this will add a whole new level of content to a sucessful site such as yours.

Congratulations on the victory. You guys deserve it. SmashingMagazine is one of the best sites on the web, which really does provide useful information. Keep up the good work guys.

As for the prize money, i would advise to spend it on maintaining the site and keeping things up and running. If not, then atleast spend it on making some design contests, since there are probably lots of eager designers here, who wish to improve their skills and in my opinion contests are a great opportunity to do so. There is no need to spend it on making free stuff, like fonts, icons and templates. The internet is full with resources, yet good articles on design are scarce.

Anyway, good luck on whatever SmashingMagazine staff decides to do. Yet again i must say, keep up the good work.
