Tigerpress: A Free WordPress Theme

Following the release of the wordpress.fun theme we are glad to release a new professional WordPress-theme and offer it for free download. Tigerpress WordPress theme has 2 columns and provides a simple and very user-friendly Mac-alike interface (design based on Apple’s Tiger Mac OS X).

The main goal behind the design was to create a unique, distinctive, yet simple and user-friendly blog design which emphasizes the content and provides a clear navigation. The theme was designed by 7Graus from Portugal together with the editorial team for Smashing Magazine and its readers.

Josh, the AA doesn’t depend on the OS. It depends on the screen. I have Vista on one of my laptops and it has anti-alias.

In its attempt to mimic OS X, I think it’s a beautiful theme but in terms of usability and practicality as a professional theme I think this was a poor choice. I’d love to see a free professional WordPress theme from Smashing Magazine that could actually be used on a business site.

To AA or not to AA, its all personal preference. I for one think IE’s and Safaris anti aliased text is hideous. You may not.

To above: The anti-aliasing is handled by software – not the screen or the operating system. Windows has a built in OS-wide setting called ClearType, but programs (such as Safari) can override this.

Design of websites can be great, farer mor better than operating systems, this because thousands of thousands of designers are creating more innovative stuff than the designers of various OS. I can understand that OSX is a great system, but can’t understand the point: why use an operating system graphic style for a website, making it look so boring?

I for one love the theme. It’s very clean and soft on the eye. I’ll agree it’s not original with another mac-theme and if (when) I use this theme I will be changing the header so that it doesn’t look so mac-ish. It would also be even cleaner and easier on the eye if the headers of the widgets in the sidebar were white instead of black. I think.

    Less is more people.
    Thanks.

    Hi Folks,
it’s always amazing to see all the cool things offered by smashing magazine (ranging from articles to icons and complete themes).

My question is, why you don’t push your project one (political) step forward: make your stuff free in the sense of the free software definition by the Free Software Foundation. That would set a really smashing example for many creatives out there who don’t care about the advantages of Free Licensing (and most people wrongly think, that they have to give it away for free).

The same designer also has a freely available Leopress (as in Leopard Press) theme, which is the same structure as this theme, but with a third column and its updated to Leopard’s aesthetics. It still doesn’t support widgets out of the box and the coding is kind of kludgy. Really, really nice idea, subpar execution (though the Leopard theme looks 10x better than the old Tiger theme).

I can’t find the original file now to compare, but the whole thing is really, really reminiscent of Aqua-Soft’s WordPress theme from the 2.0.x days. I’m certainly not accusing this author of anything (let me be clear), but if you look at Tim’s work for vBulletin and phpBB, which truly is phenomenal, you can certainly see the obvious similarities. Tim hasn’t updated his WP theme in years, though he does frequent updates for the forum systems.

I’m with Tanja–make it really smashingly free.

in any case, I’m really surprised at the reactions–I figured the design community would be crazy for Mac stuff.

Shows what I know ;). Overall not bad. Nice Mac imitation for sure.
