Tigerpress: A Free Wordpress Theme
Following the release of the wordpress.fun theme we are glad to release a new professional Wordpress-theme and offer it for free download. Tigerpress Wordpress theme has 2 columns and provides a simple and very user-friendly Mac-alike interface (design based on Apple’s Tiger Mac OS X).
The main goal behind the design was to create a unique, distinctive, yet simple and user-friendly blog design which emphasizes the content and provides a clear navigation. The theme was designed by 7Graus from Portugal together with the editorial team for Smashing Magazine and its readers.
Download the theme for free!
You can use Tigerpress for all your projects for free and without any restrictions whatsoever. However, it’s forbidden to sell or redistribute the theme without both designer’s and Smashing Magazine’s permission — please link to this article if you would like to spread the word. You may modify the theme as you wish, but if you are planning to release your modification, please ask our permission first.

hmmm… not really feelin this one.
- 3July 28th, 2008 4:28 pm
Why oh why did you take the screenshot on Windows? The font is so messed up on Windows. Why won’t they anti-alias their fonts? It looks so much better and is easier to read.
- 4July 28th, 2008 4:31 pm
I’m not really digging this theme to be honest, could be approved on by far.
- 5July 28th, 2008 4:52 pm
hmm, this is not really the smashingmagazine quality that I’m used to… are you guys serious with that free wordpress theme??
- 6July 28th, 2008 5:35 pm
more like basic layout rather than professional?
- 7July 28th, 2008 5:58 pm
seriously lacks of originality.
- 8July 28th, 2008 6:08 pm
Josh, the AA doesn’t depend on the OS. It depends on the screen. I have Vista on one of my laptops and it has anti-alias.
- 9July 28th, 2008 7:01 pm
Yup, agreed, this theme looks pretty amateurish compared to the usual high quality stuff featured on SmashingMag.
- 10July 28th, 2008 7:02 pm
In its attempt to mimic OS X, I think it’s a beautiful theme but in terms of usability and practicality as a professional theme I think this was a poor choice. I’d love to see a free professional WordPress theme from Smashing Magazine that could actually be used on a business site.
- 11July 28th, 2008 7:19 pm
To AA or not to AA, its all personal preference. I for one think IE’s and Safaris anti aliased text is hideous. You may not.
- 12July 28th, 2008 8:12 pm
Thanks, I think it would be better if you put a demo link here
- 13July 28th, 2008 9:18 pm
cool stuff
- 14July 28th, 2008 9:27 pm
Well, to be honest, I don’t understand what’s so cool about that theme. Looks pretty boring to me. Sorry guys but the free Wordpress Themes which you have released so far are way ahead this one.
- 15July 28th, 2008 9:46 pm
To above: The anti-aliasing is handled by software – not the screen or the operating system. Windows has a built in OS-wide setting called ClearType, but programs (such as Safari) can override this.
- 16July 28th, 2008 10:33 pm
To be honest, i don’t like it.
But thanks SM! - 17July 28th, 2008 10:37 pm
I agree with most of the above people. I just ain’t feeling the Smashing Magazine quality/vibe with this theme. Sorry Rui Marques, nice try though
- 18July 29th, 2008 12:01 am
Thanks! Good theme :-)
And now i try to translate it in italian. - 19July 29th, 2008 12:13 am
Design of websites can be great, farer mor better than operating systems, this because thousands of thousands of designers are creating more innovative stuff than the designers of various OS. I can understand that OSX is a great system, but can’t understand the point: why use an operating system graphic style for a website, making it look so boring?
- 20July 29th, 2008 12:39 am
Tiger wordpress theme in the age of Leopard? Looks nice, but outdated design, no originality…
- 21July 29th, 2008 12:49 am
Thanks Smashy.. but sometimes there’s a reason why stuff is free..
- 22July 29th, 2008 2:02 am
I agree, I am not much of a fan of this theme, it seems a little boring, they do say you pay for what you get, so in this case, free, so its not going to be the best.
- 23July 29th, 2008 2:03 am
Why make a theme that looks like an OS?
- 24July 29th, 2008 2:39 am
eeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, this is not as good as your normal smashing quality.
- 25July 29th, 2008 2:44 am
come on smashing! what wrong with you? its not smashing style..
- 26July 29th, 2008 3:38 am
Not really my cup of tea. Should call this “the lorem ipsum” theme.
Still…its free so why complaining! - 28July 29th, 2008 4:26 am
Just a last note… What about copyright issues?
- 29July 29th, 2008 5:00 am
just ugly
- 30July 29th, 2008 5:13 am
“The main goal behind the design was to create a unique, distinctive, yet simple and user-friendly blog design”
erm… how is that unique at all, its been done several hundred times for wordpress already.
- 31July 29th, 2008 5:43 am
Nice one. Tried it for a few minutes on my blog. Amazing how in the 2.6 era of Wordpres we we still get themes that are not widget ready! Like this one. Digged the design though.
- 32July 29th, 2008 6:58 am
is it a joke ?
- 33July 29th, 2008 7:01 am
erm… how is that unique at all, its been done several hundred times for wordpress already. > And for Mac OS … Nice maybe as an exercise for the designer, as a user I’m less than convinced, even for free.
- 34July 29th, 2008 7:05 am
The design is clean…
- 35July 29th, 2008 7:17 am
It is a high-quality design and it works in all browsers but it isn’t unique. Rui Marques did a very fine job in creating a template that already exists.
- 36July 29th, 2008 2:21 pm
This is not Tiger theme by the way. The stripes on the window was last used in Jaguar, which is OS X 10.2. By the way, I didn’t like the design.
- 37July 29th, 2008 5:52 pm
Not quality
- 38July 29th, 2008 8:00 pm
I for one love the theme. It’s very clean and soft on the eye. I’ll agree it’s not original with another mac-theme and if (when) I use this theme I will be changing the header so that it doesn’t look so mac-ish. It would also be even cleaner and easier on the eye if the headers of the widgets in the sidebar were white instead of black. I think.
Less is more people.
Thanks. - 39July 30th, 2008 12:34 am
Hi Folks,
it’s always amazing to see all the cool things offered by smashing magazine (ranging from articles to icons and complete themes). My question is, why you don’t push your project one (political) step forward: make your stuff free in the sense of the free software definition by the Free Software Foundation. That would set a really smashing example for many creatives out there who don’t care about the advantages of Free Licensing (and most people wrongly think, that they have to give it away for free).
- 40July 30th, 2008 12:21 pm
The same designer also has a freely available Leopress (as in Leopard Press) theme, which is the same structure as this theme, but with a third column and its updated to Leopard’s aesthetics. It still doesn’t support widgets out of the box and the coding is kind of kludgy. Really, really nice idea, subpar execution (though the Leopard theme looks 10x better than the old Tiger theme).
I can’t find the original file now to compare, but the whole thing is really, really reminiscent of Aqua-Soft’s WordPress theme from the 2.0.x days. I’m certainly not accusing this author of anything (let me be clear), but if you look at Tim’s work for vBulletin and phpBB, which truly is phenomenal, you can certainly see the obvious similarities. Tim hasn’t updated his WP theme in years, though he does frequent updates for the forum systems.
- 41July 30th, 2008 1:25 pm
I’m with Tanja–make it really smashingly free.
in any case, I’m really surprised at the reactions–I figured the design community would be crazy for Mac stuff.
Shows what I know ;). Overall not bad. Nice Mac imitation for sure.

Really one of the worst themes I have ever seen :S Sorry for the honesty.

what is happening with the usual quality in wp themes?
- 45August 2nd, 2008 1:45 pm
Yay! An April Fools… in August? =S
- 46August 12th, 2008 6:49 am
Theme doesn’t work well with WordPress 2.6.
It doesn’t show images on front page, in single post the images works.
- 47August 12th, 2008 7:39 am
it looks ok… but not as good as the usual wordpress themes… maybe adding some sort of design would make it way cooler than that one… ^^
- 48August 18th, 2008 1:25 am
Very nice addition
am I free to make changes ?
thanks - 49June 26th, 2009 7:04 am
This theme sucks.
MAC OS Look-alike web designes are soo 2003. Come on… - 50July 5th, 2009 1:53 am
Have to make a blog for someone who is really organized and into maths… Think he’ll love this theme. Thanks!
