Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: August 2008
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 24 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So which wallpapers have we received for August?
[Offtopic: By the way, did you know that Smashing Magazine has a mobile version? Try it out if you have an iPhone, Blackberry or another capable device.]

Miscellaneous Days
“This version of a monthly calendar is about GTD (”Getting things dropped”) on your desktop: you can use the calendar to drag all the files on your desktop to certain days, when you expect to (hopefully) be working on them. If you didn’t make it – no prob – just drag them to the next day! For the time after August 2008, you can use the wallpaper for weekly “getting things dragged and dropped” on your desktop. It’s easy – and I hope it’s efficient.” Designed by Michael Schmidt from Austria.

Join in next month!
Please notice that we respect the ideas and motivation behind artists’ work which is why we’ve given artists full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. And this is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us, but designed from scratch by the artists themselves.
Thanks to all designers for participation. Hopefully, in August we’ll receive as many entries as in July. Join in next month and smashing August, folks!

- 3
July 30th, 2008 4:20 amI have to say that I really like Schmidt’s idea, though I usually dislike cluttered desktops. But I just may use this because I use my computer much more than I look up my planner and to-do lists. Thanks :)

Specially ‘August Fruit’ and ‘My Fragile World’ has nice and cool combination of colors. - 43
July 31st, 2008 5:08 amThey’re all so tacky… Signalnoise’s the best by a long distance. Get off the pop design choices guys, the web is vast, go look for original creative stuff.
- 44
July 31st, 2008 6:12 amThe one with the cat rules!!! Already on my desktop!
Thanks and respect! - 45
July 31st, 2008 6:40 amthanks a lot guys..ur designs were awesome!! thanks again..emm why dont we have a bit smaller for smashing logo.sometime quite contrast with colour there.
- 46
July 31st, 2008 6:42 amTacky all wallpapers? Haha, I don’t think so ;) Regina Silva, Maryam, Scott Jackson…There are a lot of good jobs.
Signalnoise has a lot of good works too, but every time it’s the same thing with multicoloured glows. I’m not saying his works are bad but I think it’s too repetitive.
- 47
July 31st, 2008 7:52 amI wish you would have 1280×1024 as a size choice. thanks

August 1st, 2008 12:23 amI was just wondering why my wallpaper pack ‘Wake Up’ wasn’t it in?
Maybe there went something wrong. And if it didn’t, why wasn’t it featured? I tried to mail, but no reactions. My mails probably get stuck in your spam box or something, although I’ve sent you wallpapers before with success.
My first mail had as subject: [Desktop Wallpaper Calendar] August 08, Wake Up. - 51
August 1st, 2008 5:06 amBrigth colour and cool designe………
- 52
August 1st, 2008 12:01 pmI love “Summer Time”.
Great work! - 53
August 2nd, 2008 2:09 pm1280×960, 1600×1200, 1680×1050, 1920×1200, why not 1280×1024?
It is not problem to resize any of this, but I think that 1280×1024 resolution is pretty common.
Am I right?
I almost forget, very nice collection of WP.;)
- 54
August 2nd, 2008 8:13 pmlove micheal schmidt’s wallpaper! there’s a 23 where the 12 should be, though….

August 3rd, 2008 9:43 amI’m already a fan of Vlad Gerasimov’s work, so just placed his August Siberian Wooden House on my desktop. Love it.
Another plus is that he’s got my native resolution 1440×900 which is pretty rare among other presenters here. - 56
August 3rd, 2008 11:55 amWhat about a 1280×800 wallpaper for MacBook users, eh?
Otherwise, awesome job. Special mention to Regina Silva… you make me so proud to be Pinoy! :D
- 57
August 4th, 2008 7:05 amI truly love Michael Schmidt’s background concept. My only problem is that I am an desktop icon minimalist. But, it gives me an idea… Maybe just use notepad files with the list of items.
- 58
August 4th, 2008 8:00 amI’m really excited how many of you like the getting-things-dropped idea and find it useful. I bet I am going to do another one next month ; )
My concept is for desktop power users, that’s clear. A minimalist (like me) who hardly uses his desktop, may like one of the stunning examples from above.
I kicked this one out in such a hurry – that’s why there’s 23 instead if 12… sorry
- 59
