Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: September 2008
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 30 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So which wallpapers have we received for September?
Places in London
“All of the wallpapers are with the theme of various places in the city of London. These photos were taken as a part of a project for a friend studying architecture and they turned out so well that I decided to make them as wallpapers. You can also see a few more London Wallpapers which I posted on my blog.” Designed by Kishor Krishnamoorthi from Hyderabad, India / University of Essex, UK.

Surrealism Phantasmagorical

Join in next month!
Please notice that we respect the ideas and motivation behind artists’ work which is why we’ve given artists full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. And this is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us, but designed from scratch by the artists themselves.
Thanks to all designers for participation. Hopefully, in September we’ll receive as many entries as in August. Join in next month and smashing September, folks!

August 31st, 2008 4:55 pmI subscribe to the RSS feed for the magazine. While I find many of the articles interesting, it is the monthly collection of wallpapers that keeps me coming back. I tend to go for the ones that are bizarre and/or cartoonish. Thus, for me, “Dangerous Dinner” is this month’s pick!
Thanks to all the artists that give their time to create these wallpapers. They’re always terrific and very much appreciated!

September 1st, 2008 12:29 amAlways looking forward for the next selection of wallpapers.
Too bad there aren’t many widescreen wallpapers. I guess the number of people using a widescreen (e.g. 1440×900) equals the number of people using regular scales.
As these design surely are amazing, I hope there will be more designs for the widescreen users among us ;-)

September 1st, 2008 7:42 amh-a-r-v you’re right. 1st September 2008 should be on a Monday.
Not to mention
September 1st, 2008 7:48 amI’m kind of sad that 1280×1024 is supported so rarely :( I’ll take some 1600ers and scale them down …
But all in all, great wallpapers! Thanks!

September 1st, 2008 11:21 amI have my Mac os desktop set to change automatically when it wakes up from sleep, which is cool but there are a limited number of them. I always wished I could drop an RSS feed in there or something like that which would continually pick up new backgrounds like this for me.
If anyone knows how to do this, please let me know! brian at startbreakingfree dotcom

September 1st, 2008 4:40 pmi really love all these wallpapers, the only thing that bothers me is some of the calendars. what’s the point of putting them on there when you can’t even tell which day it is?
mel
September 1st, 2008 5:02 pmThese all seem to be “windows-centric” which is sad. How about a requirement to post left and right handed versions when you submit. More challenging and inclusive I think.

Hope you don’t take offence?
Benjamin
September 2nd, 2008 12:08 amAccording to Autumn Moonlight, September 1 was a Sunday – wtf? Oh well, maybe it’s a 2002 or 2013 calendar. It’s definitely not for 2008 :-)

September 3rd, 2008 6:19 amI like most of these wallpapers a lot, but I wish there was more support for 1024×768. Trust me, if I could get a bigger resolution, I would – but not everyone has a fancy 17″ flat screen.
abc
September 3rd, 2008 9:27 amYes, more 1024×768 support is needed.
and I feel wallpapers with brighter colors and fresh designs should be used as desktop calendars

September 4th, 2008 11:39 amReally like “Return to Work”- but designer adds an extra day to September -
“Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November…”
Someone should carefully check the calendars before posting them on the site-
Monique
September 4th, 2008 1:16 pmGreat!
