We love to release freebies. Every release helps to make the Web a nicer place, which is why we support designers and challenge them to release something for free in order to be featured on Smashing Magazine. And the results are quite often pretty impressive.

Icon Set

Today we are happy to release Cheers: a free set of 12 “social” glasses, designed by Helen Gkizi from Webtoolkit4me, especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers.

Download the Set for Free!

You can use the set for all of your projects for free and without any restrictions. However, it’s forbidden to sell them. Please link to this article if you would like to spread the word.

Cheers Icon Set

Motivation Behind the Design

As usual, here are some insights from the designer herself:

“It’s really funny if you think about it as the motivation behind it was a simple and basic question. Helen is a graphic designer specializing in invitation and brochure design. The question was “Can you design icons” and she said “Sure why not, what kind of icons?”

Gerasimos browsed through a few sets and that was it. She had her first one ready in about 30 minutes. We just said “glasses”. Icon in a glass. Gerasimos and Helen run a small design agency in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is a web designer she’s in the print business. But now he thinks they need to expose this talent somehow and here it is. Their “web 2.0 in a glass”. Cheers!”

Last But Not Least

We are constantly looking for creative designers and artists. You may not know it yet, but we may feature you in one of our upcoming posts.

If you would like to release a free high-quality font, a Wordpress theme, Photoshop brushes, a Drupal theme, some wallpapers or an icon set, please contact us. We would like to support you (both financially and with the broad readership of Smashing Magazine).

Thanks! Now when my clients ask for an RSS logo in the shape of a beer glass, I’ll be sweet.

Thank you Smashing Magazine for taking care of my glassware-shaped social-bookmarking website icon needs!

I’m eagerly awaiting a set of RSS feed icons shaped like olde-worlde woodworking tools. Please also consider doing more articles about how superior Apple computers are, because I really did enjoy the last one you ran… so informative!

  26. 26.

    Eli (September 11th, 2008, 1:31 am)

Kind of surprised to see Design Float in there among the bigger names. Very nice and unique set though.

  27. 27.

    Arnar (September 11th, 2008, 1:32 am)

I think these icons are poorly designed, most of the service-logos within the icons are pasted awkwardly (see YouTube and Reddit icons), the size of the icon (glass) is way too big in comparison to the logo within-it, they don’t scale well and are completely unsuable.

Honestly, what website do you see using these?

  28. 28.

    yaara (September 11th, 2008, 2:44 am)

Great idea but it’s really difficult to see the specific icon.

  29. 29.

    Thorsten (September 11th, 2008, 2:51 am)

I agree with Arnar. These icons are, well they are free and I don’t have to take them, but honestly, their are not good enough.
Where should one use such a big feed icon? And the shadow looks like a simple effect. Really just a 30 minute work…

  30. 30.

    Cynthia (September 11th, 2008, 3:28 am)

    very nice :D
    thanks

  31. 31.

    Sgarro (September 11th, 2008, 4:11 am)

Great, i really like it…but…why don’t you have do the flickr, facebook, last.fm and maybe anobii too??
    Sorry for my english

  32. 32.

    Jon Hartmann (September 11th, 2008, 4:21 am)

I have to agree with some of the others… they look “spiffy” but who would never need such a thing? These stand a better chance of appealing to MySpace kiddies than to designers.

  33. 33.

    chris (September 11th, 2008, 4:31 am)

They are cute, but who really uses these things? Anyone? Bueller?

  34. 34.

    oskard (September 11th, 2008, 5:46 am)

Facebook - It would be one of those giant, novelty, fish-bowl sized glasses with some deep blue liquid inside, filled with the most random assortment of umbrellas, lemons, colorful ice cubes.

Myspace would be the same thing but instead of a glass, a small wooden barrel.

  35. 35.

    Nikki (September 11th, 2008, 6:17 am)

It’s amazing how many people complain about free icons they are not obligated to use….

  36. 36.

    Ashrith Maudgalya (September 11th, 2008, 6:20 am)

    YOU GUYS ROCK!!!! :D

  37. 37.

Idea stolen from blog.templates.com ??? Or its better to say your were inspired by Link [blog.templates.com]?

  49. 49.

    johnny (September 15th, 2008, 1:27 am)

I agree with Arnar. They are poorly designed. Besides, this isconset reminds me another one release by templates.com - Link [blog.templates.com]. The only difference is that the icons from psd2html.com are worse.

    Savocado (September 15th, 2008, 2:41 am)
