i hate to gripe, seeing as this icon set is nicely designed… but wtf is up with human icons ALWAYS being white? white people are in the MINORITY on this planet. you’d think graphic design would reflect that, but apparently white skin is the ‘default’ choice for many.
JD (October 2nd, 2008, 2:19 am)
mia–how about making your own icons w/ African American, Asian, or some other non-Caucasian skin tones? “Be the change you wish to see in this world” or some such thing….
Dimitiay (October 2nd, 2008, 2:50 am)
Why Smashing still publish so poor quality icons?
Elle (October 2nd, 2008, 2:55 am)
You should ban posts with “FIRST!”
So annoying… warghhh!
It’s like they’re waiting for a new article to post “FIRST!” but it’s not usefull at all!
Anyway, thanQ 4 the icons. I’ve put them in my Icon directory :)

“… but wtf is up with human icons ALWAYS being white? white people are in the MINORITY on this planet. you’d think graphic design would reflect that…”
Thanks so much for suggesting that graphic design be some sort of Political Correctness propaganda. If the artist is white and wants to make white person icons—deal with it! Given their populations, if all art was required to subscribe to your ridiculous proposal, near every icon would be South or Southeast Asian. Not necessarily a problem for me, but since America and Europe are still a white majority, you’re ignoring a lot of people.
So keep your racist gripes to yourself because you arrogance hurts the cause of all of us minorities.

Thanks! Any chance we can get the PSD/SVG/whatever the source files are? This allows, say, pulling a person out of the people icon, etc.. Makes them much more useful.
mia (October 17th, 2008, 3:47 am)
@ Jeffrey Wang.
wow. seems i really annoyed some you. if you think it’s racist to suggest a bit of multiculturalism within the design world, then thats *your* issue. I never once suggested that Asian/ African icons should be the ‘norm’, or should be solely represented above all else.
But I have to say that I have never seen an Asian/ African icon. My comment was simply that ‘white’ skin is seen as the ‘norm’ - which is understandable within a European context but is also certainly limited. Icons are, by their very nature, representations of ideas/ forms. Therefore an icon often subscribes to the most widely held visual metaphor representing the idea/ form. Thus, the sheer lack of African/ Asian icons makes me wonder if the designers do not question the notion that ‘white’ skin is the default, and that other skin tones are the variations. If we compare it to the way that mail icons are often represented by white envelopes, this is because most envelopes are white. ‘White’ paper envelopes are seen as the universal representation. Human icons represent ‘humanity’, as in ‘people’, as in all humankind. Are all humans white? Is white the ‘neutral’, the ‘universal’? Thats the point I was trying to make. If you think that asking questions is racist, then I can’t really help you out.
@JD - I don’t make Asian/ African icons because I am CRAP at making icons, lol.
I suppose the reason I also bring it up is that I do a lot of work for international non-profits who represent a diverse range of people and interests.
