Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: November 2008
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe and sent to us by the designers themselves. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded and used for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for November?

This work is inspired by the Diaguitas Art, who use to live in the north.” Designed by Alberto Marcías from Santiago, Chile.

Circular
“I got inspired by the package design of the Adobe CS4. I love the vibrant colours in mosaic on a dark background and believe that it makes for a good wallpaper. I just played around with shapes until I was happy. It reminds me of the signal screen on old televisons. It’s been done entirely in Photoshop using nothing but filters and gradients.” Designed by Franz Jeitz from Luxembourg.

L’Astrolabe Research
“The theme of this wallpaper is a photograph of the research vessel L’Astrolabe which docks at the Salamanca Wharf area in Hobart, Tasmania between visits to the Antarctic and Great Southern Ocean. I particularly like the strong colour and the masculine industrial feel of the photograph. There are also feminine elements in the reflections off the harbour water which add interest. L’Astrolabe spends its time gathering information about global warming and ocean species.” Created by Steven Clark from Hobart, Tasmania.

Black Dodge
“The Black Dodge in this photograph is parked every day outside the Tasmanian School of Art in Hunter Street, Hobart. As you can see it’s style, elegance and romance is in stark contrast to the surrounding cars. It’s always polished, always tempting to take for a harmless drive and triggers a combination of nostalgia for those sexy cars of Cuba with a large tot of industrial design.” Created by Steven Clark from Hobart, Tasmania.

My Imagination
“My November design is inspired by the rainy, cloudy November we have here in the Pacific northwest. As November washes away the warmth of summer, the vibrancy of the season’s colours live on in my imagination. I find the words of the Walter de la Mare poem “November” really evoke the feelings November brings…”
There is wind where the rose was,
Cold rain where sweet grass was,
And clouds like sheep
Stream o’er the steep
Grey skies where the lark was.
I had a lot of fun putting this wallpaper together. It’s all vector illustration in Illustrator. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.” Designed by Michelle Cormack from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

C’est une femme!
“It may sound silly, but, it was quite nice that a little girl recognized the woman I was drawing on the bus. Normally people don’t talk to me (and I appreciate that!), but this little lady made me feel really good.” Designed by Patricia Montero de Cabana.
Fallpaper
“Fall is my favorite time of year and I was having trouble finding a wallpaper that expressed this beautiful season to my satisfaction. To solve this I created a wallpaper of my own in Photoshop. I harvested resources from a number of sites including sxc.hu and bittbox.com to create my piece of art. I think that fall is different from autumn in that the leaves are actually “falling” from the tree. In my design I wanted to capture all the colors of this warm season.” Designed by Philip McDaniel from USA.

Designed by Xena from Ukraine.
Geometric tribute to Guy
“The design is loosely based around Guy Fawkes night (November 5th) and the many firework displays that are part and parcel of the evenings’ celebrations. I was interested by the inherent beauty of fireworks and the way in which they explode, hence the abstract, geometric style of the imagery. I opted for a warm colour palette to give the wallpaper a sense of cosiness, a feeling I recall from many ‘Bonfire nights’ of my youth.” Designed by Mark Kirwan from the art agency Persona, England.

Join in next month!
Please notice that we respect the ideas and motivation behind artists’ work which is why we’ve given artists full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. And this is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us, but designed from scratch by the artists themselves.
Thanks to all designers for participation. Hopefully, in November we’ll receive as many entries as in October. Join in next month and smashing November, folks!

October 31st, 2008 9:27 amI really think this time’s line-up wasn’t even close to October’s in terms of quality. I see two different colored versions of a rounded vector-ish tutorial result and a couple of other things that are just overdone and gone for good already.
But I do appreciate the urge to contribute from the same.
I really love C’est Une Femme, Creative Design and more though. Nice walls.
I’m gonna get some in for December. About time.

October 31st, 2008 12:00 pmA couple of good entries, like “The Vigil” from Alex Beltechi (I’m biased, I know, I’m his brother) and “C’est une femme!” by Patricia Montero de Cabana, but the order is at least strange. Maybe the best entries should have been at the top.

November 2nd, 2008 4:20 amTo W. Gary Miller –
What does it matter that day X is the start of the week? It’s all pretty arbitrary anyway. Please, think outside the box and enjoy the art.

November 2nd, 2008 8:08 amThe creative design is upside down…the “with calender” option leads to the image without the calender and vice versa…atleast for the 1680×1050

Franz Jeitz |fudgegraphics
November 4th, 2008 6:12 amto all those complaining about the lack of 1440×900. Use the 1920×1200 which is the same ratio and scales down without loss. You don’t even need to resize it or anything. Mac OSX does it for you.
