Where I would use an illustration you can see in so many sites?

    Andy Dust (December 3rd, 2008, 4:59 am)

    Hmmm.

IMHO, these days Smashing Magazine has far too many ‘giveaway’ posts. Genuine editorials have become too few and far between.

    Damon (December 3rd, 2008, 5:03 am)

Gotta agree with Andy and J… These posts are just becoming routine. SM has really fallen by the wayside.. What happened to the intellectual posts that got this place where it is today? If we want freebies like this, we can find them.

I’d say a poll of some sort asking what is most important to the readers is in order.

I can’t believe the selfishness and outright shenanigans of some of you posters.

New Rule: If you’re going to bitch about free stuff, go to a royalty-free site and pay for it.

If you are getting tired of these, go to another site.

I’ll tell you what’s getting old… hearing people complain about something they can simply make a mouse click and leave over.

Anyways… I love the space monkey. I’ll find a way to use this somehow. These will go in my library… you never know when you’ll use random stuff like this. Sure, not likely for me in news graphics, but I always get called on by family to make birthday fliers etc.

    Thanks Smashing! These are fun!

Hello! This is a first and foremost a design website. Yes, editiorial posts are important but so is having access to design resources. Graphic and Web designers often rely on these resources. Especially those with small budgets or working in small teams.

That being said, can people stop griping about the giveaways please. Maybe it would be better to focus on suggesting how smashing can strike a balance in the different types of posts. But in truth it is already doing that. Smashing has already become a vast repository of different subsets of key design information.

I agree with Doodie Pants 100%. This site is for all. I enjoy reading wonderful articles about design and where it’s headed, but there’s nothing wrong with getting some goodies as well. Saves a buck or two in purchasing them, right?!

    Sheeesh!

Thank you SM. Keep up the great work!

    Andrew (December 3rd, 2008, 6:57 am)

Great brushes. I’m never really sure of the terms of these freebies. Can artwork like this be incorporated into resources, such as a flash application, then resold? They are of limited use if not.

In terms of the other comments above, it’s good to see a freebie that’s not an icon set, but I imagine it’s tough for Sven and Vitaly to strike a good balance between freebies and authored articles. Let’s not forget that overall this site is great and there’s a heap of content for a wide range of readers. There’s not much out there that rivals it.

Since when got people so greedy so they have to complain on “give-aways”? Do you want porfessional stuff, and with professional i mean very very exclusive graphics, go and buy it! SM has something for everone - articles, tips, free graphics, icons and much more, So let’s face it, certain articles doesn’t appeal at all, others are very interesting. That’s what makes SM to a Smashing Magazine.

    Tnx!

  17. 17.

    Andy Dust (December 3rd, 2008, 7:18 am)

Sorry if it sounded like I was bitching. I understand that people find the freebies very useful and that it takes a great deal of effort to continuously write fresh editorials. I personally find editorials more useful than the freebies and was just voicing my opinion that the weight seems to have shifted towards the latter in recent months. If other people don’t really mind, then fair dos.

Thanks for the brushes. You guys deserve all your success.

I love this site because it delves deeply into the technical and the creative sides of our industries. I’m mainly a developer, but I use photoshop and illustrator every day. I see absolutely no problem with Smashing Magazine posting quirky photoshop brushes or wallpapers one day and AJAX tutorials the next.

Hey, 100k+ RSS subscribers can’t be wrong! Keep up the great work!

    Chad (December 3rd, 2008, 11:14 am)

Thanks for the article. I’m curious, where do all these web design blogs get their content (articles + beautiful pictures)??? I’m lost how each blog has unique articles with all these related pictures. I’ve tried Googling about this, got nothing much but generic article repo sites with no pictures.

    Damon (December 3rd, 2008, 1:46 pm)

Not trying to be rude about it, so please don’t take my last comment like that. I think the reason I get somewhat disgruntled about it is because I don’t have much use for all the different RSS Icons and the like.. but I guess I could keep my mouth shut :)

Anyway, I still visit SM everyday and like to see what you guys have to offer - so in that regard, thank you.

    Dele (December 3rd, 2008, 3:38 pm)

A lot of efforts goes into compiling or sourcing these freebies. Let’s be appreciative of the fact that SM is bringing so much our way. I cant believe ppl complain about getting too much freebies. Cant you read their slogan. WE SMASH YOU WITH THE INFORMATION THAT MAKES YOUR LIFE EASIER, REALLY!!!!!

I say oh! yes REALLY!! :)

Smashing Magazine does a fantastic job in providing free editorials and free resources for the vast majority of designers and developers alike, there are VERY few sites on the internet that go to such lengths to support the community (for free) so keep up the great work guys.
