Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: January 2009

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.

And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 40 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine1 by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So which wallpapers have we received for January 2009?

In With The New

"I know that you require entrants to send in their work at least 2 days early and I admit that this is pushing it. I know that you’ll do your best as this took a fair bit of time hence the late entry.

This entry basically reflects releasing the old and embracing the new. The whole concept is revolving around something big and embracing it as well as accepting it with style." Designed by Umer Tahir2 from Calgary, Canada.

"This picture was taken at the cost of the East See in North Germany, late December 2008. These old trees catched my attention. Looking upward, their branches merged in front of the grey blue sky. They seemed to wait for the New Year to come and for the next spring to continue where they stopped last autumn." Designed by Hans-Georg Krejci .

Photography Alaska

"At a time of year when most people are jovial I chose to embrace the potential darker side of the season. The theme of this wallpaper and photo is loneliness. Having spent time in Alaska during the winter the concept of loneliness and the realities of Alaska go hand in hand thus the name.

Ultimately I wanted to toy with light. In the end the photo was too full of emptiness not to do something with it." Designed by Bryce107 from USA.

Illustration Year of the Cow

Typography Lustrous New Year

"My idea behind this wallpaper is that the new year brings in a clean slate for everyone! As midnight hits, we all enter January with new goals, dreams, and high hopes for a blessed year! Everything from the previous year can slowly be forgotten as we forge a new year in our life! This wallpaper was also designed with the focal point of the desktop in mind. Both PC and Mac users align their icons on the left or right side. Having the text and calendar in the middle would have it stay away from all the clutter of a desktop!" Designed by Anthony Nguyen129 from USA.

When year is about to begin

"As I live in the northern hemisphere, January will be for me always connected with winter and snow. Snow covered cars, trees and houses, lot of opportunities to ski or snowboard… Therefore I used snow as one of the main themes for my wallpaper. January also means a start of new year. Celebrations of the New Year is always full of fireworks, so I used fireworks in my wallpaper. Maybe you’d ask if we don’t celebrate on 31st of December, on New Years Eve, but it is not absolutely correct. Almost everybody fires their fireworks just after midnight, on 1st of January." Designed by Matus Luptak260 from Bratislava, Slovakia.

"Winter Greenhouse/French Café – January is always the chilliest and bleakest month of the year. I find myself daydreaming of the Saturdays I spent in Paris finding refuge from the cold in small hip cafés snooping over the shoulders of sketching artists and eavesdropping on chatty aupairs engulfed in espresso machine steam and ever growing jungle like vines." Global Village

"The January sheet of the wallpaper is based on the theme ‘Global Village.’ The main illustration is done by Shlomit Wolf. It shows a peaceful coexistance of flora, fauna and technology on this planet Earth. Technology has made all of us closer. The tagline ‘start something good’ reminds us about new year resolutions and the importance of being a good, wiser person.

All of us use computers for personal and professional work. My desktop is always messy and I never tamper with the position of taskbar. All the icons or files tend to be on the left side of the screen. So, the calendar wallpaper should not have any numerals on that ?forbidden? area. Also, there should be ample space at the bottom to accommodate the taskbar. A graphic can cover the rest of the space with a nice tagline.

The sheet has both the current month?s calendar and the coming month’s calendar. The font used is Century Gothic. For easy ?deciphering,? Saturdays and Sundays are given in a contrasting colour than the weekdays. The coming month?s calendar is justified by the fact that people always plan things in advance. These plans can spill over to a date in the next month. So, no need for turning pages in and out while planning a project or a holiday break." Designed by Anas K A335 from Bangalore, India.

Smashing Wallpaper - january 09336

Winter Night

"It’s winter time and I have designed my first submission for the month January. I thought this wallpaper works perfectly because it’s the darkest time of the year but it’s still one of the most contemplative.

Well that was my inspiration for this silence, illustrative artwork. I hope it will be on the next Desktop Wallpaper submission." Designed by Christian Rumpf346 from Austria.

Smashing Wallpaper - january 09347

"I thought it would be fun to play with the grays of January. The month is pretty blah, at least in my part of the world. Luckily, a day of sunshine always seems to come along just when your spirits need lifting. Best wishes to all for a joyful 2009." Designed by Michelle Cormack357.

Frosted January

Designed by Nikola Lazarevic368 from Nis, Serbia.

Smashing Wallpaper - january 09369

Classic Car

"This design came about through some experimental photography with a holga camera. I used black and white 120 film and photoshopped in some additional vintage effects. I thought it was an appropriate theme because with holga cameras, you never know what your pictures may turn out like – double exposures, light leaks etc. Likewise, here in St. Louis, Missouri you never know what the weather might have in store from one day to the next during winter months." Designed by Michelle Milla379 from USA.

Smashing Wallpaper - january 09380

"Something fun to start the year for my first submission." Designed by Laura Moloney390 from Ireland.

Smashing Wallpaper - january 09391

Birth of Stars

"Since it’s the beginning of a new year, and the launch of our new website, we hope that one day we could be counted among the stars born this month, hence the theme “Birth of Stars”." Designed by team401 from USA.

Smashing Wallpaper - january 09402

Woodland Deer

“After doing the foxes version, I just wanted to do more, so I did a slightly different version with a deer. The non-calendar version contains a quote from e.e. cummings instead of the calendar”. Designed by Seth Nickeson412198 from USA.

Smashing Wallpaper - january 09413

Reading on the bus

"I like the way people spend time while commuting, specially when somebody is too concentrated to realize that he/she is my model. Although sometimes it’s not easy, because the bus/subway is packed, I love drawing on wheels." Designed by Patricia Montero de Cabana423.

All “first”, “second” etc. comments will be removed from now on. Please don’t post such comments.

  4. 4

The first wallpaper’s awesome! Great job

  5. 5

    these are VERY poor

  6. 6

    of course the first one!

  7. 7

Another lovely collection, thanks to all contributors. I’m missing Vlad Gerasimov but Valeria Kuzminskaya’s girl &spider and Bryce’s leather armchair are already looking wonderful on my desktop :-)

  8. 8

D’oh! My Fragile World starts on the wrong day. They’re all lovely, though.

  9. 9

I don’t see why these gits don’t just post a real comment instead of “first!” then there’s no chance of them being removed.

Anyway, thanks for including my wallpaper! :)

  10. 10

Quality of the wallpapers is a bit mediocre compared to those of last month (many contain spelling errors, cerebrating?!). Guess most people are busy celebrating the holidays!

Some nice contributions though! Thank you, as in every month, for a new wallpaper.

  11. 11

I like the second wallpaper! think new! Great work!

  12. 12

Well I feel some addiction for smashing magazine for some time.
And I admire your hard working to get so many great articles and stuff.
    Thank you for effort.

This list of wallpapers is not so great I must admit, of course this is just my opinion, but there is so many remarkable wallpapers in the past year, so no one can complain…
I wish you all in SM Happy New Year and good luck in the next 2009.

  13. 13

Awsome, thanks so much for including mine :)

  14. 14

Thanks for including my work ‘Global Village.’ I received help from 15 talented people across the world to design the whole 2009 Calendar. Thank you all and may you have a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

  15. 15

  24. 24

Wow Great Graphpic for A New Year Celendar Year 2009.

  25. 25

a few are ok, but most are poor choices.

maybe you didnt have many submissions this month?

come on guys don’t let your standards slip

  26. 26

None of the designers seem to have a macbook pro 1440×900 except the last one.

  30. 30

Nice Wallpapers. Thanks to all designers for their work… And happy New year to you all !!

    DKumar M.

  31. 31

To be honest, none of them appealed to me, I’ll be keeping my old wallpaper.
    Thanks nonetheless SmashingMagazine.

  32. 32

I hadn’t the inspiration and time to make one for January, but I do like some submissions (esp. 144 Celebrating Creativity). And I think those who are complaning about the poorness of the submissions, try to make one yourselve, it can be difficult to compete with pro designers ! You can’t discuss about taste, and finding another inspiration every month is not always that easy…

Good work SM and have a great passover !

  33. 33

    they are great!!!!
i love these very very much…

    good job
    congratulate you…

  34. 34

Happy to see my work here.SM rocks.

  35. 35

You should continue to focus on quality. This post has too many lousy wallpapers and that kind of sad.

  41. 41

happy to see my work! :)

  42. 42

Opting for the “Grunge” wallpaper. Nice work!

  43. 43

Many thanks for including “Birth of Stars”, and a very happy new year to you all!

  44. 44

With these wallpapers I want to skip january… just horrible.

  45. 45

Definitely not the best calender post, but still cool! thx

  46. 46

What’s your wordpress theme Name ?

  47. 47

It seems quite a few readers are complaining about the quality of the submissions this month. December was surely a busy month and SM didn’t receive as many submissions. Another complaint was the available resolutions for download. I for one use a MacBook Pro and strictly use 1440×900 (widescreen) and at work I see primarily 1280×1024 (standard). Let’s hope Smashing does some research and revises the available resolutions for wallpapers in the future.
Thanks for a great month, and a great year Smashing!

  48. 48

awesome wallpapers!! i just there were more 1200*800 px options!!

  49. 49

I love “My Fragile World” – beautiful. Unfortunately, the calendar has January 5 as a Sunday when it is, in fact, a Monday.

  50. 50

Like them – but some have Xmas pictures in which seems odd, and a few silly spelling errors.
Also I think you should do 1400 x 900, a lot of people have that resolution now.

I think I’ll try one for Feb! Thanks SM.

  51. 51

yes not very good, i will try one for feb

  52. 52

I like them every month – somehow I miss the 2560×1600 this month which I can use for desktop …

  53. 53

“Blue Wintersky” is a great photograph, and I love the use of roman numerals to render the month as a clockface in “Happy New Year”, but for my desktop I’m going with “Winter Night”. The contrast of the clean white snow to the starry sky is really pleasing to me :D

  54. 54

Thanks you Guys….I’d love to see something with a camera like a Nikon!! Thanks!

  55. 55

Some from this wallpapers are really awful and made by nonprofessional designers.

  56. 56

    Thank you for sharing.

There’s many talented designers showcased here.

  57. 57

“December is dead” is my fav!

  58. 58

i like the last one, the sketch is very well made.. and i wil like it more if the numbers of the mont was made by a pencil too.. =) good job all of you ~

  59. 59

I really liked the wallpaper with the frog and the Christmas tree. However, the calendar is wrong. January 1, 2009 is on Thursday not on Wednesday.

  63. 63

144 Celebrating Creativity >> is great!

  64. 64

    “December is dead” is great

  65. 65

i think odd world is special and a concept different from the rest

  66. 66

Inspirational one with child is great!

  67. 67

“December is dead. You can call me January.”

I love that one! Thank you!

    Of course, who wouldn’t want the “change”/Jan 20th one either… ;)

  68. 68

One of those wallpapers actually says “144 Countries Cerebrating Creativity.”

I think maybe we need to ceLebrate using spellcheck instead?

  69. 69

I have to agree… not really feeling it from several of these wallpapers (though some are admittedly lovely). It can be difficult creating appealing wallpapers, but isn’t Smashing Magazine about sifting through the mess on the Internet and finding the best, most creative, and most inspirational pieces of design? I’d rather have quality over quantity. Thanks anyway, as I did like some of these, but I look forward to an amazing list in February. :)

    January 1, 2009 7:33 pm

Oh dear, guessing lots of people overindulged on egg-nog and didn’t spend enough time trying to think of something original if these were the best… Nothing like usual standard unfortunately. (With a few exceptions)

  71. 71

here are all the 41 wallpapers in one pack:

    link deleted
    do NOT do this!

  72. 72

Shouldn’t the Happy New Year one have XXIX as 29 and not XVIX?

  73. 73

My Girl friend likes Readers calender so much.

İ like all of them :D

  74. 74

only one 1280×1024 resolution wallpaper with calender :(

  75. 75

I like the green ‘happy new year’

Some others all awesome too, some are not that nice.
    Anyway: thanx!

  76. 76

I love your desktops – you always have an awesome selection every month!
I downloaded “My Fragile World” and discovered that the calendar is wrong!!! Oops!
Quick fix in PS but I did have a {?} moment. . .

  77. 77

Same here; any of those will be my January wallpaper… : (
Anyway, I wish you a CREATIVE new year…

  78. 78

“December is dead. You can call me January.” this is completely gigantic and marvelous design. of course there are simple and absurd designs but no one should discourage new talents.
anyway thanks SM for sharing my design. : “THE EFFORT”

I wish you good luck with the new year.

  79. 79

I like most of them i think they are all good Birth of Stars is my favorite i love the idea but it could have been executed in better way .

  80. 80

Thanks a lot for adding my wallpaper….

  81. 81

    Very nice collection.. Great job!

  82. 82

Great job guys & happy new year. I’ll submit mine for next month.

  83. 83

I just made a wall calendar for the whole year of 2009 (german).
You can see it at .

Happy new year to all Smashing Readers!

    With regards

  84. 84

    yeah these are poor

    your usually better

  85. 85

‘My Fragile World’ calendar is incorrect. It’s Sunday the 4th Jan not Sat 4th – The dates and days are wrong. Pretty picture, useless calendar.

Some of these are very lack luster, there’s no creativity. Some are just a stock photo with a calendar over the top. I’m kinda disappointed at the collection the whole and the one I liked was useless as a calendar.

  86. 86

Just excellent wallpapers every month. Im amazed. Keep it up guys i come here every 1st of the month

  87. 87

I agree on the 1400 by 900, that is what my laptop is. Quality is usually better, will look froward to next month like I always do… thanks I love the site.

  88. 88

    I love these wallpapers! :)

  89. 89

    Very good wallpapers…

    thanks folks..

  90. 90

how can i submit my work for Jan 09 wallpaper

  91. 91

Only one small hint: I assume that the image with the tree is taken at the Baltic Sea (which ist the correct english term for the german “Ostsee”).

  92. 92

Agreed, some of these wallpapers are not very inspiring. My is Birth of Stars.

  93. 93

For some reason, only about half of the wallpapers are showing up for me right now. But, from what I can see, I love the “December Is Dead” and “Doodled” wallpapers.

I sympathize with those who say their resolution isn’t supported. My laptop has a 1920×1080 resolution, and it can be hard to find wallpapers to fit it well. I typically use SM’s wallpapers for my desktop PC at work, and special widescreen wallpapers

  94. 94

Just one 1280×800? I’m really missing Vlad in this set too. :( Sadly, I’m not getting a wallpaper from here this month.

  97. 97

    Tanks you shard

  98. 98

    Really Great Collection.

  99. 99

a must agree that most of them are realy disappointing

    Super nice calendars :D thankssss!

not the best i have seen from you

    Re: Two Zero Zero Nine

Milan: the image is stunning, the layout just what I need (especially as it centres the calendar, which is perfect for the position of my icons on the desktop). But what happened to 19th and 20th of the month ? :-) Thanks

Not your greatest offering – a tip to designers: too busy isn’t too good. Leave some looking space!

  113. 113

Calendar is missing from many of the higher resolution 144 wallpapers by Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. The calendar is the purpose of the design, isn’t it? Leave it to college kids to be creative, but forget to proof their work!

Nothing to choose from. As was previously said, these are very poor if to compare to others. The most wallpapers I liked were in April.

Wait for something cool in Ferbuary!

1280 X 800 would be great fer all us widescreen 15.4″ laptop users. looses it’s crispness when I use any other size.

I love coming here every month to pick out an outstanding calendar wallpaper for the month. Unfortunately, since all of the calendars are wrong this month (You have January 1st, 2009 landing on Thursday instead of Friday, where it belongs!) I will have to go elsewhere. Looking forward to some great wallpapers (with correct calendars!) in February.
