Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: January 2009
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 40 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So which wallpapers have we received for January 2009?
In With The New
"I know that you require entrants to send in their work at least 2 days early and I admit that this is pushing it. I know that you’ll do your best as this took a fair bit of time hence the late entry.
This entry basically reflects releasing the old and embracing the new. The whole concept is revolving around something big and embracing it as well as accepting it with style." Designed by Umer Tahir from Calgary, Canada.

Photography Alaska
"At a time of year when most people are jovial I chose to embrace the potential darker side of the season. The theme of this wallpaper and photo is loneliness. Having spent time in Alaska during the winter the concept of loneliness and the realities of Alaska go hand in hand thus the name.
Ultimately I wanted to toy with light. In the end the photo was too full of emptiness not to do something with it." Designed by Bryce from USA.

Typography Lustrous New Year
"My idea behind this wallpaper is that the new year brings in a clean slate for everyone! As midnight hits, we all enter January with new goals, dreams, and high hopes for a blessed year! Everything from the previous year can slowly be forgotten as we forge a new year in our life! This wallpaper was also designed with the focal point of the desktop in mind. Both PC and Mac users align their icons on the left or right side. Having the text and calendar in the middle would have it stay away from all the clutter of a desktop!" When year is about to begin
"As I live in the northern hemisphere, January will be for me always connected with winter and snow. Snow covered cars, trees and houses, lot of opportunities to ski or snowboard… Therefore I used snow as one of the main themes for my wallpaper. January also means a start of new year. Celebrations of the New Year is always full of fireworks, so I used fireworks in my wallpaper. Maybe you’d ask if we don’t celebrate on 31st of December, on New Years Eve, but it is not absolutely correct. Almost everybody fires their fireworks just after midnight, on 1st of January." Global Village
"The January sheet of the wallpaper is based on the theme ‘Global Village.’ The main illustration is done by Shlomit Wolf. It shows a peaceful coexistance of flora, fauna and technology on this planet Earth. Technology has made all of us closer. The tagline ‘start something good’ reminds us about new year resolutions and the importance of being a good, wiser person.
All of us use computers for personal and professional work. My desktop is always messy and I never tamper with the position of taskbar. All the icons or files tend to be on the left side of the screen. So, the calendar wallpaper should not have any numerals on that ?forbidden? area. Also, there should be ample space at the bottom to accommodate the taskbar. A graphic can cover the rest of the space with a nice tagline.
The sheet has both the current month?s calendar and the coming month’s calendar. The font used is Century Gothic. For easy ?deciphering,? Saturdays and Sundays are given in a contrasting colour than the weekdays. The coming month?s calendar is justified by the fact that people always plan things in advance. These plans can spill over to a date in the next month. So, no need for turning pages in and out while planning a project or a holiday break." Designed by Anas K A from Bangalore, India.

Winter Night
"It’s winter time and I have designed my first submission for the month January. I thought this wallpaper works perfectly because it’s the darkest time of the year but it’s still one of the most contemplative.
Well that was my inspiration for this silence, illustrative artwork. I hope it will be on the next Desktop Wallpaper submission." Designed by Christian Rumpf from Austria.

Classic Car
"This design came about through some experimental photography with a holga camera. I used black and white 120 film and photoshopped in some additional vintage effects. I thought it was an appropriate theme because with holga cameras, you never know what your pictures may turn out like – double exposures, light leaks etc. Likewise, here in St. Louis, Missouri you never know what the weather might have in store from one day to the next during winter months." Please notice that we respect the ideas and motivation behind artists’ work which is why we’ve given artists full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. And this is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us, but designed from scratch by the artists themselves.
Thanks to all designers for participation. Join in next month! And smashing January and a smashing new year, folks!

December 31st, 2008 1:22 amI hadn’t the inspiration and time to make one for January, but I do like some submissions (esp. 144 Celebrating Creativity). And I think those who are complaning about the poorness of the submissions, try to make one yourselve, it can be difficult to compete with pro designers ! You can’t discuss about taste, and finding another inspiration every month is not always that easy…
Good work SM and have a great passover !

December 31st, 2008 6:16 amEven though, I only thought there were a few highlights for this month’s calendar, please don’t stop in February! I still look forward to them every time at the end of the month. Don’t stop a good thing!

December 31st, 2008 7:33 amYou should continue to focus on quality. This post has too many lousy wallpapers and that kind of sad.

December 31st, 2008 8:55 amIt seems quite a few readers are complaining about the quality of the submissions this month. December was surely a busy month and SM didn’t receive as many submissions. Another complaint was the available resolutions for download. I for one use a MacBook Pro and strictly use 1440×900 (widescreen) and at work I see primarily 1280×1024 (standard). Let’s hope Smashing does some research and revises the available resolutions for wallpapers in the future.
Thanks for a great month, and a great year Smashing!

December 31st, 2008 10:49 amI love “My Fragile World” – beautiful. Unfortunately, the calendar has January 5 as a Sunday when it is, in fact, a Monday.

December 31st, 2008 11:01 amLike them – but some have Xmas pictures in which seems odd, and a few silly spelling errors.
Also I think you should do 1400 x 900, a lot of people have that resolution now.
I think I’ll try one for Feb! Thanks SM.

December 31st, 2008 12:04 pmyes not very good, i will try one for feb

December 31st, 2008 12:17 pmI like them every month – somehow I miss the 2560×1600 this month which I can use for desktop …

December 31st, 2008 12:55 pm“Blue Wintersky” is a great photograph, and I love the use of roman numerals to render the month as a clockface in “Happy New Year”, but for my desktop I’m going with “Winter Night”. The contrast of the clean white snow to the starry sky is really pleasing to me :D

I love that one! Thank you!
Of course, who wouldn’t want the “change”/Jan 20th one either… ;)

January 1st, 2009 1:28 pmOne of those wallpapers actually says “144 Countries Cerebrating Creativity.”
I think maybe we need to ceLebrate using spellcheck instead?

January 1st, 2009 6:15 pmI have to agree… not really feeling it from several of these wallpapers (though some are admittedly lovely). It can be difficult creating appealing wallpapers, but isn’t Smashing Magazine about sifting through the mess on the Internet and finding the best, most creative, and most inspirational pieces of design? I’d rather have quality over quantity. Thanks anyway, as I did like some of these, but I look forward to an amazing list in February. :)

January 1st, 2009 7:33 pmOh dear, guessing lots of people overindulged on egg-nog and didn’t spend enough time trying to think of something original if these were the best… Nothing like usual standard unfortunately. (With a few exceptions)

Anyway, I wish you a CREATIVE new year…

January 2nd, 2009 2:53 pm“December is dead. You can call me January.” this is completely gigantic and marvelous design. of course there are simple and absurd designs but no one should discourage new talents.
anyway thanks SM for sharing my design. : “THE EFFORT”
I wish you good luck with the new year.

January 3rd, 2009 7:03 pm‘My Fragile World’ calendar is incorrect. It’s Sunday the 4th Jan not Sat 4th – The dates and days are wrong. Pretty picture, useless calendar.
Some of these are very lack luster, there’s no creativity. Some are just a stock photo with a calendar over the top. I’m kinda disappointed at the collection the whole and the one I liked was useless as a calendar.

January 3rd, 2009 7:06 pmJust excellent wallpapers every month. Im amazed. Keep it up guys i come here every 1st of the month

January 5th, 2009 12:13 amOnly one small hint: I assume that the image with the tree is taken at the Baltic Sea (which ist the correct english term for the german “Ostsee”).

January 5th, 2009 4:28 amAgreed, some of these wallpapers are not very inspiring. My is Birth of Stars.

January 5th, 2009 6:31 amFor some reason, only about half of the wallpapers are showing up for me right now. But, from what I can see, I love the “December Is Dead” and “Doodled” wallpapers.
I sympathize with those who say their resolution isn’t supported. My laptop has a 1920×1080 resolution, and it can be hard to find wallpapers to fit it well. I typically use SM’s wallpapers for my desktop PC at work, and special widescreen wallpapers

January 5th, 2009 6:44 amJust one 1280×800? I’m really missing Vlad in this set too. :( Sadly, I’m not getting a wallpaper from here this month.
