Vintage and Blues WordPress Themes

In this post we release 2 free high-quality WordPress magazine-themes. The themes include full PSD-templates and can be used without any restrictions whatsoever. The themes were commissioned by Smashing Magazine exclusively for our readers and designed by Wendell Fernandes1. As you may know, since the beginning of the year, each release on Smashing Magazine has been dedicated to a specific theme or topic that could be useful in your next project. This release focuses on the vintage-look and on the magazine-style.

Vintage: A Free WordPress Theme

As the title suggests, we wanted to release a WordPress theme that would reflect the vintage, old-style look and thus look attractive, unusual and memorable. We discussed retro and vintage designs2 already, but we wanted the theme to literally stand out – not through its style, but also through its structure. Therefore we were more than happy when the designers suggested a design with a magazine-look.

The result is the Vintage WordPress theme, a 2-column theme with various illustrations and icons. Please notice that the theme requires WordPress 2.7 to work.

Wordpress Theme3

The theme is available for free download and can be used for any purposes without any restrictions whatsoever. You can freely use it for both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. The set may not be resold, sublicensed, rented, transferred or otherwise made available for use. Please link to this article if you would like to spread the word.

Behind the scenes

As usual, here are some insights from the designers themselves:

The reasoning behind this theme is simply, taking us back to an old-school look and feel, reminding where our fathers came from and the fathers of our fathers. It’s simply remarkable to think, that people lived a full and abundant life inside a “vintage” world and brought us all here to this date and day.

Today we can look back and watch and admire their struggles, fights, victories, failures, submission and humbleness. Today we can see how far we’ve come and how far we can reach. This theme brings us back to the beginning of it all, and remind us of 2009 as a year of reflection for all we’ve accomplished, and what we can achieve moving forward. We would like you to enjoy the theme.

Yours truly,

Blues: A Free WordPress Theme

This theme is a variation of the theme presented above; however, it tries not to focus on the vintage look but on a simple, clean, and user-friendly design. This theme was commissioned by Smashing Magazine exclusively for our readers and designed by the Dellustrations10 design agency.

Wordpress Theme11

The theme is available for free download and can be used for any purposes without any restrictions whatsoever. You can freely use it for both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. The set may not be resold, sublicensed, rented, transferred or otherwise made available for use. Please link to this article if you would like to spread the word.

  1. 1

Thank you smashing magazine for releasing these!!!

  2. 2

    Great Themes SM!

  3. 3

    Awesome thank you!

  4. 4

    Great Themes!

    you guys rock!

  5. 5

that’s one freaking heavy background image

  6. 6

Nice theme Guys…. Much Appreciated!! Good to have some fresh looks.

  7. 7

Wow another wonderful share… I liked the Vintage theme verymuch. !

  8. 8

Nice designs, very very good illustrations included in them. :)

  9. 9

i love the vintage theme a lot – but there’s a nasty horizontal scroll on a 1024 screen. it did seem to take a long time to load fully, 388kb for the bkgd image does seem kind of excessive. too bad – it’s a beautiful theme.

  10. 10

    Super sweet work ‘dell :)

  11. 11

A wordpress theme for a cms website for small businesses would be great. A lot of themes look too much like a blog and I think that as wordpress is so easy to use that small business would be really helped with suitable themes.

  12. 12

great post, thank u very much

  13. 13

Thank you guys! Much appreciate it!

  14. 14

Those are some awesome themes. A set of themes I would like to see would be theme modifications of ComicPress ( If not some created themes, a tutorial on how to integrate a free theme with ComicPress.

  15. 15

It looks pretty boring. And the background images are too huge, why did you do them so big? Is the theme complete? It looks incomplete to me.

  16. 16

    its everywhere huh.

  17. 17

Woooooooooooo :O Really, Reallly Smashing !

  18. 18

Next time we’ll do one “lighter”. But thank you for your input!

  19. 19

    Vintage looks awesome.. =)

  20. 20

Id like to see themes for Expression Engine, Joomla and Drupal.

  21. 21

Will do. It’s in the queue.
    Thank you for the input.

  22. 22

I’d like to see more standard CSS/XHTML templates. WordPress is OK….

  23. 23

Will be designing those in the following weeks.

  24. 24

the theme is not optimized for 1024 x 768?
weird, there are a lot of people using this rezolution :)
great theme….but if you can make it loooking good for 1024×768 it was fantastic :D

  25. 25

Both look ridiculous AMAZING, a great piece of artwork put together with wordpress and best of all it’s free so I think we have the right to give the creators a big “Thank You” for the amount of time and creativity put together in this themes.

Keep up the good work guys!

  26. 26

I love this site, I love the WordPress posts especially, and your themes are fantastic. I am using a modified version of wp_christmas you guys posted, but the blue one is really nice. Well done!

I’d love to see the Smashing Magazine theme available for download. Your comments template is gorgeous.

  27. 27

I’d love to see a well-done, minimalist newspaper / magazine theme, an iphone-formatted accordian-style 1-column layout and/or a Timeline theme, with horizontal scrolling and clickable date points/posts.

I find a lot of the themes are a little too specific to modify easily.

  28. 28

Both of them are great but they don’t support transparent .png images by IE6 and they don’t fit to 1024×768 resolution.

  29. 29

    Looking nice.

I’ve got a suggestion; have been looking for inspiration to make a sports-club (basketball) website based on wordpress. With a lot of different content, and a lot of experience. Am really interested in what you’d make out of that since i don’t have the wordpress-theme building capabilities.

Good chance a nice design would be really used for our site.

  30. 30

I agree with koffiekitten :”A wordpress theme for a cms website for small businesses would be great. A lot of themes look too much like a blog and I think that as wordpress is so easy to use that small business would be really helped with suitable themes.”

  31. 31

@Jonathan – Would love to create those themes for you! Send an email… we’ll chat about it.

  32. 32

Those are some kickass themes =o

  33. 33

a wordpress theme, easy to modify, which look like a website and not a blog, would be great.

Thanks for all your work. smashingmag is really ma favorite.

  34. 34

I as well would like to see some great CSS templates. Being a little bit new to the game of xhtml and css, I cannot find one single place online that has “amazing” free css based templates for download. I really would like them to pick apart and learn from – seems like the people making the good ones are keeping them for themselves….. Great themes guys..

  35. 35

Absolutely love these free wordpress themes. Please keep them coming.

  36. 36

    wow, this is incredible!

awesome theme, congratulations to the developers and thank you SM!

  37. 37

I cannot find one single place online that has “amazing” free css based templates for download.

    have a look at
the themes are free, CSS – based and quite interesting! Better than many others…
and very good to learn from for beginners!

  38. 38

    Great theme.I can’t believe it’s for free!!!

  39. 39

I’m Italian and I’m very proud to look Vespa’s style.

  40. 40

Nice themes. But I really want the description to tell me how the slideshow works.

  41. 41

Great themes. Very nicely done. Love the color palette and the functionality. It is a little bit of a bummer it is too big for the 1024 px format. But for free, it is awesome. But edit the CSS and there should be no problem.

  42. 42

Great theme, Great look and functionality. A bit of a bummer it isn’t 1024 optimzed but they are giving us the PSD and a little CSS tweeks should take care of all that. Thanks all as always. Great work.

  43. 43

    thnx very much sm! :D

  44. 44

Meh, I like the designs but all this WordPress crapola reminds me of Geocities or Myspace. Lets focus on purpose built graphic design not regurgitated themes and icon sets. What’s next flaming gifs and dancing babies?

  45. 45

It’s great as a free theme but it seems to be missing the proper search function, clickable RSS feed, and a working carousel. Also, the background could be optimized for faster loading time. Like I said great visuals but it seems rushed and unfinished. In the end the most important features aren’t usable.

    – Talking about Vintage theme.

  46. 46

thank you, awesomenesses! but i’m thinking of more simple and elegant themes, light and easy to modify of course. these are too heavy.

  47. 47

I’d love to see some themes that allow you to use WP as both a shop (showcase product images) and a blog. Lots of crafters and artists out there looking for something that’s more about images than posts.

  48. 48

Loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ittttttttttttttttttt!!!! Thx Smashing… and Thx dellustrations!!!

  49. 49

The word is WOW! cant stop adoring this themes.
    THnx SM and Dellustrations

  50. 50

Even with high-speed connections these days that background image is no where near practical for general audiences or high-traffic sites.

  51. 51

great themes, anybody know how controll the banner image sliding?

  52. 52

That is one horrific theme. I expect much better from sm.

  53. 53

    Now that is smashing!

  54. 54

i love both themes! their cool and cute designs really smashes! :D

  55. 55

I’m impressed by all the little details that made theses themes stand out! :-D

  56. 56

Thanks for themes. It’s really beautiful themes.

  57. 57

The search field on both themes are horrible. The text in the field isn’t cut off properly before the graphical element.

Also; the newspaper with rss icon should be a link to the rss-feed, otherwise it isn’t a good graphical element to be placed next to the search field… Think about usability people!

  58. 58

I like this themes. Thanks for sharing with us!

I would like to see here some clean and sharp wordpress themes.

  59. 59

    Love these thanks so much
Love to see more like this style

  60. 60

Great themes. Would love to see a portfolio one. Cheers

  61. 61

    Awsome! and free! … , …… !!!!!!!! Wait!!!! Am I dreaming? |- 0.o -|

  62. 62

    wow lovely themes :)

  63. 63

    Great themes !!

  64. 64

Grungy and Young!!!! I need grungy and young

  65. 65

    fantastic theme.

  66. 66

    i like this theme.
    Very cool…
    and surprisingly.
    Its free!!

  67. 67

I’m willing to bet that themes like these, heavy in graphics, are going to be phased out just like the bulky graphical navigational bars of the late 90’s. Remember the ones where the nav bar took up a third of the screen and looked like some ridiculous futuristic robot? The principle is the same, but somehow better graphics make it look “cleaner”. I think the clean feel will rub off after a few years and you’ll see a return to a more simple look.

  68. 68

Thank you guys, I love this great style in the themes, Congratulations

  69. 69

its amazing how Dellustrations turns concept and ideas to masterpiece

  70. 70

Great theme, and I am using it for a friend’s site, but I keep getting errors when I try to get back in to edit it. kind of defeats the purpose of having a word press site.

    It seems touchy.

  71. 71

    opps forgot the “s”

  72. 72

    Nice theme..
I want to try this theme to increased my ability in web design, aspeciallity ini WP theme.

To all, if you want to know my creation, please visit in

  73. 73

nice theme .. great ideas ..

  74. 74

Nice theme but how do you get the carousel feature to work?

  75. 75

    Beautiful, thanks!

  76. 76

    nice… themes…

  77. 77

Great theme, I will try this, thanks

  78. 78

    Vintage theme is really inspiring….

  79. 79

Great themes, think i will use one of them on one of my sites. Great work :) (Although one point, they are a little slow when loading)

  80. 80

Muiiiiito massa os temas! Parabéns! E obrigada por nos presentear com eles! =)

  81. 81

Hi Smashing Mag and Wendel! I’m converting the Vintage Theme for Blogger. Conversion is almost done and the template will be available very soon for Blogger platform. Your comments would be appreciable in the meantime, thanks.

    Check it out:

  82. 82

My first question did’nt get a answer. So I try again with another question..

When editing the PSDfile.. How do I save it so it becomes the template image files? Without all the text like “learn to design” ect.. This has been a issue for me. SM always have PSDs with there themes. But I just figure out how to use them when there is only one file. Instead of one for header, on for some other image and so on… I hope some kind soul could explane to me how it works. :3

  83. 84

Hi there – I love (love!) your themes.
You asked for an idea’s for new themes, I’ll give you two ideas of blogs I have, which could use some revamp. in the hope you’d find one of them to be interesting to work on:
    1) Dance.
I have an aggregator for dance blogs on:
for which I would love to have a nice magazine like theme.

    2) Food. I have a blog on hummus (yes, the chikpees thing) on:
I would love for a better theme for it.

Thanks again for your wonderful content,

  84. 85

    Wow than ever ;)

    February 5, 2009 10:00 pm

    So…… Who’s scooter is that?

  86. 87

    cool themes!!!

  87. 88

Is aware of the texture rip from their website? The texture in the header is just a mirrored image of the front page graphic on “”.

I don’t want to call steal without knowing the sources and the designers behind this…but, I’m skeptical of the usage on that one.

  88. 89

Did you try to use it because on my website i’ve got a lot of troubleshouting.

So when i choose this theme in the admin i have this two report immediately and a lot of problem if iwant to use it.

So i’m back with another theme

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /homez.65/bootlegg/www/baseballmovie/wp-content/themes/wordpress-brown/functions.php:2) in /homez.65/bootlegg/www/baseballmovie/wp-includes/functions.php on line 698

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /homez.65/bootlegg/www/baseballmovie/wp-content/themes/wordpress-brown/functions.php:2) in /homez.65/bootlegg/www/baseballmovie/wp-includes/functions.php on line 699

    • 90

The error Warning: Cannot modify header information etc.. is caused by spaces at the top and/or bottom of the functions file….edit and remove any space before and after the php code.

Unfortunately, this only one of quite a few issues with the theme. Seems it was released when it was closer to a template than a theme with links hard coded in, carousel links that lead to nowhere, search thats non-functioning, expected css classes missing, etc.. etc.. Frankly it needs quite a bit of work to be a functioning wordpress theme so I’d only recommend it to people who know their way around wordpress, html, and css and photoshop. Fortunately the psd files are available.

The biggest oversight imo is that it exceeds 1024 x 768 dimensions….I didnt even notice that until reading the comments here as both of my computers run at 1280. I wouldnt dream of putting a site online that couldnt be viewed in 1024 – lots of people still run this resolution. Since I’ve already commited quite a bit of time to customizing this for a site I guess I’m going to have to shrink it down via image editing and css which is kind of a pain in the a$$.

Still, the graphics are pretty sharp and its free without restrictions. That makes it worthy of a thanks.

  89. 91

@jeogonz I have the exact same problem also.

  90. 92

its a broken one.but theme is good

  91. 93

    nice themes!

  92. 94

Blue Theme is broken, looks incomplete to me…though it looks nice ;)

  93. 95

    sizler harikasınız,çok teşekkür…thank you

  94. 96

Hello, I get a this error Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/2/w/woaw7/www/wordpress/wp-content/themes/wordpress-brown/functions.php:2) in /home/2/w/woaw7/www/wordpress/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 850 Are the enyone who knows how to solve this ? WordPress is up and running, installed on 2.7 and works with the other themes, but I get this error when I use the Vintage theme

  95. 97

Vintage theme looks fantastic, but unfortunately it’s wasn’t completed and there are many elements which aren’t working:
    – page archive list (Page 1 of 38 | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5….. END). That’s just hard-coded via html, not dynamic in Php.
    – same deal with the RSS icon
    – same deal with the slideshow screen at the top.

There really is no point in releasing incomplete / buggy themes, no matter how good looking they are. All you are doing is wasting people’s time trying to get them to work.

    Own goal, Smashing Magazine.

  96. 98

@Fredrik: I am facing the same problem. Great theme but error message comes out at the header in wp-admin. Makes me wonder do people just comment before they even try it out?

  97. 99

Nice, gotta save this for my other site. Thanks for the freebies! :)

  98. 100

    nice looking theme.. :) thanks!

  99. 101

    nice works !

  100. 102

I’ve found problems with the Blues Theme and don’t know how to fix them.

For example: I went to the admin panel for my site and right away I got an error message that said – “Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at…..”

    What is that all about??

If anyone can help me out, please let me know.

  101. 103

This theme is working nicely for me (on a brand new wordpress 2.7.1 install), but I d have a couple of small bugs that I’m wondering if anybody has any insight to (I’m kinda posting this all over town now).

    1) When people post comments, they are attributed to my name on the page, rather than the poster’s name, even though the poster’s name is clearly listed in my admin pages.

    2) At the bottom it claims that my one and only page is 1 of 38!

Thanks for any help you can provide, and for offering a great theme for free!

  102. 104

Ah… just like other had said, these theme had a BIG problem in the header stuff and about the paging list.
These themes aren’t complete, so please make a final release for theme~! >__<“

  103. 105

Same thing here…I am working on getting everything out of the hard html and into some dynamic php, I will hit you guys back when I am done and hopefully everyone can use the unofficial finished* version. Sidebar and footer needs to be widgetized, slideshow at top needs to be working and a lot more…

    • 106

      Hey Sean-

I see you were planning on putting together a revised version of this theme without the bugs back in May of last year. Did you ever complete this?

  104. 107

I noticed the following bugs in the blues theme(with wordpress 2.7.1):

    1. the graphic of the ad-block Background doesn’t appears in Firefox
    2. the same “header was already sent” messages in the admin menu
    3. The preview of the theme doesn’t works

I will try to fix them and give you a feedback

  105. 108

Actually, both themes are NOT widget ready at all. The sidebar code was added, but the proper code isn’t in the functions.php file for the theme.

You have to manually add the 4 lines to functions.php for widgets to work from the official WP Widgitizing Themes page in the Codex.

As stated earlier in MULTIPLE comments – both of these themes (despite being visually stunning) are VERY buggy – you will have to hack the HELL out of them to get them to work properly. I can also attest to the fact that the Vintage them PSD file isn’t even the final version that produced the theme – you’ll have to make some manual changes to make it all line up if you need to change the graphics.

Great themes visually – POOR themes coding wise!

  106. 109

I just had to come back and post again – because anyone downloading this theme should know how to fix all the BUGS it comes with. As I said in my last comment – great design, but this is some of the worst WordPress theme code I’ve ever seen from a “pro” release.

the footer.php file doesn’t even contain closing body or html tags, and there is no wp_footer call. Unless you add that many plugins (WP Stats) won’t even work. It’s obvious this theme was never validated – the closing tags would’ve been immediantly found.

Also – the sidebar right_column has no style attributes in the stylesheet, and on pages with short content in the left column, the sidebar will actually WRAP AROUND into the content area if you don’t set a #right_column float:right in the style.css file.

I’m certain there are more bugs and errors I haven’t encountered yet…

  107. 110

Shame there appears to be so many problems with the vintage theme :(

Have any of the commenters who have said they have been working on the theme been able to get something which could be “released”? I really like the theme, but making some of the changes above are a bit beyond me…

  108. 111

    how to install this theme

  109. 112

    Sleek , adaptable theme

I would love to see an adaptable 1 column theme without any side bars that allows the user to easily add their own header image.

In an ideal world the columns background would be white and the surrounding background a nuetral darkish grey so as to compliment any image I might like to use in the header. Now ,I know I’m getting ‘greedy’, but I also dream of having a theme without any page menu or search function beneath the header image…..afterall, when it comes to SEO I want to rank for the Keywords in my post’s title and not the words on a menu ‘button’…such as “About” or “Contact”……

In short,,,,just something that I can adapt and use on multiple projects and which is designed with SEO in mind………

That is my ‘dream’…….the ideal template !!

    Someone ‘pinch’ me……I think I’m dreaming !!

    Kindly ,,,,Dillion Fox

  110. 113

the psd file of the brown theme is really caotic!!!

  111. 114

A great list of themes, although I would also try looking at the site: (NewWPThemes. There is a color tag selection to easily search through themes.

  112. 115

First, may I congratulate everyone behind this website, for such a extraordinarily great job of sharing these designs with us. I keep on referring to these pages and the invaluable information as guide for my web business.

You ask what type of WP themes I’d like to see more of. I’d really like to be able to use more themes that work with the e-commerce plug in. So far, only one theme really works, and it still has its quirks. Other themes are not able to display the shopping cart.

Thank you for considering my comment.

  113. 116

hey, guys…if anyone with errors on the backend(login page, etc) is still reading this post, i think i solved the problem…..

the errors referred to functions.php…so, i deleted everything in that file and saved it to see what happened……..

the errors were gone, but then the site wasn’t ‘widget ready’ and under ‘widgets’ it said, ‘no sidebars defined’…..realizing that the problem was definitely in that php file, i undid the delete so it returned to the original code, found blank lines before and after the php code, deleted the blank lines, and saved…….all the errors were still gone and the site was widget ready…

such a trivial issue, but it was almost enough to make me scrap the theme…..but, now i’m back in business….

let me know if this helps you….

    • 117

graphic bob can you help me fix it? contact me through

also, the rss is broken and if u put www. before the domain it errors.

  114. 118

@ graphic bob: can you share the final functions.php files with deleted blanks? or feature them in a post for copy/paste?
    Much appreciated!

  115. 119

not sure if the php code will go through in the post, but here’s what i have(copy just the characters, and no spaces above or below

    ‘after_widget’ => ”,
    ‘before_title’ => ”,
    ‘after_title’ => ”,

  116. 120

the code didn’t come through…i’ll link to a screen shot…

  117. 121

The above code is not correct – the submission didn’t go through…

  118. 122

    very nice theme

  119. 123

glad to have helped….when i said, ‘the submission didn’t go through’, i was referring to the post above the link to the screen shot(#115)…when i tried to paste the code into the comment, it didn’t show up…..(which is why i showed the screenshot, #116)

    please post correct function.php :-(

  122. 126

    To fix header, it’s easy

You need to remove the spaces on functions.php.. that’s all!

  123. 127

what is the complete list of corrections to this theme? It’s all a bit piecemeal right now :-/

  124. 128

Do Not download unless you’re a highly experienced php coder.
    The theme is not finished!!
Search doesn’t work, no help text offered, no nothing.
Just a nice design, that’s all you will get!!!

I’ve been looking for a long time on the internet for simple wordpress themes that don’t look like blogs. It would be great to find a resource that has a collection of them. My clients always want a wordpress but they don’t want it to look like a blog.

For such a solid, reliable source of great WordPress themes, it looks like some more work needs to be done on the user’s end to customize them (or get them to work right in the first place)!

I mentioned the Blues theme in my blog along with some other very nice blue WordPress themes here:

Again, visually stunning work – please post updates to the code to make sure it works in most browsers, otherwise it’s useless to novice coders/bloggers.

I LOVE the vintage theme and so badly want to keep using it on my site ( but I am having so many problems with it I think I may have to give up. error after error after error.

Dellustrations should really fix these things to be taken seriously as a web design company.

  133. 137

OK I fixed the error message by deleting the extra spaces in the functions.php, but does anyone know how to fix the rss feed error?

  134. 138

And how to fix the page navigation at the bottom, I can’t get to any older posts!

This is the perfect theme that I’ve been looking for! I wanted to ask what browsers is this compatible with and is it webmaster friendly, easily customizable?

  143. 148

Some great looking themes here, thanks for letting us take a look

  144. 149

I would like a more soft, light, happy and flowery version of Vintage. I love the layout but I found the content a bit sad. (Please no protesting, I am a free human being entitled to my opinion and I am giving a suggestion as per requested.)

to resolve problems, just put this in the functions.php :

    ‘after_widget’ => ”,
    ‘before_title’ => ”,
    ‘after_title’ => ”,

this is the right functions.php : with no space before and after

I hope this works for everyone, it does for me ;-)

to resolve the pb of pagination, just install the wp-pagenavi and the code in place of the hand code

    • 151

I actually just got this theme and still have a problem with pagination – can you let me know how to solve this please – I installed wp-pagenavi ands till nothing :(
