Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: February 2009
The wallpapers calendar series will not be discontinued. Next month is the last month in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. In February, you’ll have one last chance to showcase your work by designing a desktop wallpaper calendar for Smashing Magazine. But don’t worry, we have a number of new contests coming up, so it will be worth staying in touch!
Wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use one wallpaper for a long time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration from it. That’s why we decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers to cover 12 months. And to make them a little more distinctive than the usual fare, we decided to embed calendars for each month. If you need to look up a date, isn’t it better to show off nice wallpaper with a nice calendar, instead of launching your default time application?
This post features 70 (!) free desktop wallpapers for February 2009, created by designers across the globe. Every wallpaper can be downloaded for free and comes in two versions: one with a calendar and one without.
Please note:
- All images are linked to a preview of the wallpaper.
- You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to feature on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
This month, we’ve been literally smashed by the explosion of your desktop wallpaper calendars. So look out, February 2009, we’re coming!
Moon Dreams
“Here is my moon schedule calendar for February 2009. A moon phase for every day, because since ancient times people have always known about the moon cycle and how it affects human behavior. When the moon is full or new, people can be extremely sensitive and show some big changes in their mood and behavior. That is why I wanted to create something fun and useful at the same time. I called it “Moon Dreams.’” Designed by Yana Foltice.

Winter Sun
“On one of my trips back home to southern Germany I was out in the countryside on a beautiful sunny late winter day. The landscape was just magnificent, with the sparkling snow in the mid-day sun. I took the picture with my digital camera when the horse appeared because it really shows how small we are in proportion to these majestic mountains. From the picture, I created the artwork for the desktop. Hope you all enjoy! ” Designed by Brigitte DiBenedetto of USA and Germany.

“This abstract piece of art was created using a single shape, a triangle. If you look close enough, you’ll notice that everything is made up of the same triangle, though in different sizes and orientations (this is called fractal art). Small correction on the Rosso Alfa wallpaper: it was designed together with Marius Dumitru.
Anyway, i think you deffinetly should continue with the monthly desktop calendar, it is such a great ideea and such a great source of inspirational wallpapers! - 21January 30th, 2009 12:00 pm
@Vitaly and Sven
Ending the desktop wallpaper calendar is a great idea if you would like to lose most of your readers!
I am very disappointed by your decision because I thought you guys were different from other magazine sites. Your readers spend hours looking for inspiration, and to kill of a vital source of inspiration is completely devastating.
You need to consider your readers’ opinions. It is important when it goes to making decisions that could effect your audience this much. Since your readers are the reason Smashing Magazine is so popular. - 22January 30th, 2009 12:23 pm

Thank you for keeping the calendar wallpapers. I think the quality of submissions, and how it ties in with so much of your other design content, is a real drawing card to get people to visit your site.
- 132February 2nd, 2009 12:00 am
Why last chance?
I love those wallpapers!
Please don’t stop publishing them! - 133February 2nd, 2009 12:21 am
Oh, my Lordy…
My desktop is featured, eventhoug I misspelled February.
Sorry I couldn’t fix over the weekend- the workfile was on my work-pc, and not at home.
So- sorry for the inconvienience everyone! I promise to spellcheck next time..
(My entry is The Frosty Leave) - 134February 2nd, 2009 12:21 am
Great wallpapers again! Thanks alot guys.
- 135February 2nd, 2009 2:15 am
Indeed, thanks for not stopping.
But I have one request. If we shall “show off nice wallpaper with a nice calendar, instead of launching [our] default time application” could you make sure saturdays and sundays are in place?
I love “FEBulous Fire” but I’m wondering why wednesdays are highlighted..? - 136February 2nd, 2009 2:49 am
Maybe it’s already mentioned; but DON”T STOP! Puhlease!!
- 137February 2nd, 2009 3:43 am
The best collection yet. Keep it up!!!
- 138February 2nd, 2009 4:25 am
@Vitaly Friedman & Sven Lennartz
Thank you for continuing this Calendar issue. We appreciate it much. I believe I speak for those who are looking for inspirations and those who express themselves, both.
B. - 139February 2nd, 2009 5:03 am
PLEASE DON’T STOP THE WALLPAPER SERIES
your magazine is famous by helping designers with inspiration
why you want to lose this connection between your readers and yourself????????? - 140February 2nd, 2009 5:18 am
I love all of these. I hope this series doesn’t end. I just discovered it last December and have loved it ever since. It’s so hard to find decent wallpaper and these exceed those standards by a trillion. :-)
Love this site!!!
- 141February 2nd, 2009 5:49 am
Finally same calendar with Monday as a first day of a week as in the most of the countries.
- 142February 2nd, 2009 6:33 am
First time commenter, long time reader.
Thanks for keeping the desktop calendars. This is such an amazing magazine that it’s a staple read most every day. Keep up the great work and thanks for actually listening to your readers :)
- 143February 2nd, 2009 6:34 am
Please don’t end the calendars. These are the only reason I get here every month.
- 144February 2nd, 2009 7:09 am
great collection this month, guess everyone wanted to show off for what they thought was their last chance at the calendar.
- 145February 2nd, 2009 7:18 am
非常好,哈哈!
Thanks. - 146February 2nd, 2009 7:22 am
I’m not sure how many other smashingmag readers use netbooks, but I’d love to see a 1024 x 600 resolution for my Eee
- 147February 2nd, 2009 7:25 am
Thanks for keeping the calendars!!! Look forward to them every month.
- 148February 2nd, 2009 8:05 am

- 149February 2nd, 2009 8:08 am

- 150February 2nd, 2009 8:18 am
I love this site and i love these calendars. Many thanks for these great collection.
- 151February 2nd, 2009 8:26 am
How about adding a poll to each one of these wallpapers to give the authors some extra credit?
- 152February 2nd, 2009 8:33 am
Please dont stop the calendars…..
- 153February 2nd, 2009 8:38 am
Why stop one of your best and most consistent marketing methods?!!! Someone at SM needs to do a study and see the correlation of site hits and no more wallpaper. Thanks for the great collections though!
- 154February 2nd, 2009 8:54 am
I Love these designs, please keep them coming! If your worried about running out of months I know for a fact there are at least 10 more this year!!!!!
- 155February 2nd, 2009 8:57 am
It’s great you’ve canceled that decision. It really would’ve been a bad one. These monthly wallpapers are not the sole neither the primary reason for my being an rss-subscriber to your site, but even so I would’ve missed it (and would’ve had to find another site offering something like that.)
- 156February 2nd, 2009 9:14 am
AMAZING!!!!!!!
- 157February 2nd, 2009 9:21 am
Thank you for this nice collection and thanks that you keep it alive :-)
- 158February 2nd, 2009 10:34 am
This is odd, last month so many people left negative messages for the wallpapers. This month people are crying. The quality difference between the two months is there, but this is just amazing.
SM is gonna keep the calendars. They just got what they wanted to know…with two simple words “last call”
- 159February 2nd, 2009 10:47 am
Suuuper!! Thanks for not discontinuing the wallpaper calendar! I just love these!! I set my Mac to switching to an new one every hour and so I have a day full of wonderful calendars every day and every month!

Thank you SOOOO much for continuing to do the monthly calendar! It is something I eagerly look forward to each month and tell my co-workers and friends about. I think it is also something that makes Smashing Magazine stand out (amongst all of the other great articles and tips!) Thanks again!
- 164February 2nd, 2009 1:46 pm

Although the past couple months I haven’t seen any wallpapers that I really like, I still enjoy this and look forward to it every month. I’m glad to see that it will be continued after all.
And like a couple comments above, it would be great to see 1440×900. A lot of people I know have that resolution, myself included.
- 167February 2nd, 2009 6:29 pm
好漂亮~~~
- 168February 2nd, 2009 7:17 pm
Thank you for NOT taking away the wallpapers. I love them.
- 169February 2nd, 2009 9:47 pm
Thank you for reconsidering doing away with the monthly wallpapers. I just discovered them last month. I would have been so sad to see them goI think they are a wonderful opportunity for everyday people to access new art from all over the world. They are a much better alternative to the majority of free wallpapers you find on the Web!
- 170February 2nd, 2009 10:24 pm
although most are nice, it would be nice to see something that represents black history month, since that’s what february is, and to celebrate the innaugration of Barrack Obama

- 198February 4th, 2009 12:21 am
Dude, my 10 year old daughter comes to the site every month to download wallpapers. Bad move to end this feature.
- 199February 4th, 2009 1:20 am
I cannot believe you even considered discontinuing the Monthly wallpapers. I look forward to them every month, and they are the only reason I found the site (through Delicious).
The website as a whole is excellent and the removal of the monthly wallpapers would be a big loss.
Keep up the good work.
- 200February 4th, 2009 3:20 am
I will write a post on this page and make link to it in my blog. thanks for this lovely collection.

Only 1 suggestion: Please, do encourage also people to put 1 more month. I’m missing a lot this month a calendar, which has both Feb and March!
- 208February 4th, 2009 12:11 pm
I was disappointed when I read last week that the monthly calendar contest will be discontinued. I’m realllly glad that it will continue on~ i actually look forward to a new wallpaper every month =)

Please don’t stop!
- 210February 4th, 2009 9:25 pm
Guys! don’t be stupid!. Don’t even think about stopping this series. This is what makes me come here every month, unless I need some good designing ideas, which happens very rarely since I’m not any kind designer.
(I know you’ve changed your mind, but I’m writing this to make sure you won’t try to do the same mistake in the future) - 211February 5th, 2009 2:26 am
Every time I open my laptop to give a presentation, I run the risk of the calendar art outgunning my work! Thank you to all the “artists” and to Smashing. Don’t stop!

This is my first time that I visit this web page, and I like it. I love these calendars. They have great talent very good designs. I like this web page because it show us of different designers from different places of the World. Also, these people share their amazing Knowelge in their designs with ideas, combination of colors, illustrations, styles of typography (calligraphy), galleries, layouts, and other styles of designs which only Smashing Magazine might show us in its calendars.
I would like to see you continue with this great project because you have potential to get more sucess with your designs.
Thank you for show us this web page. - 238February 18th, 2009 5:30 am

Whyyyyyyyyyyyy????? this is one of the greatest things on your site, and I think a lot of us heard about this site on the first place because of your calendar contest. As a matter of fact, I thing it brings a lot of visitors looking for cool wallpapers, so if money is a problem, you could put more ads (I don’t mind the ads if I’m getting so many good wallpapers ;) ).
