Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: March 2009
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 45 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for March 2009?

Martius Blindness
"This started out as a skull vectorization with numerology turned grunge piece with a symmetric touch march was originally named ‘martius’ after mars, roman god of war. This is the 3rd month of 09, a year of many wars; civil wars, financial wars & the never ending human wars.
In man’s quest for their own causes, they are seemingly blind to those around them while they have moved on, those left behind have to pick up the pieces and it never ends – satisfaction is not a permanent vocabulary in man’s dictionary. " Designed by Joy Lym from Singapore.

Colour of Love
"March is the month when people start impatiently waiting for early Spring; and Spring, among other things, associates with falling in love. The surrealistic touch of bits and pieces connected with strings is how we slowly get to know the other person." Designed by Signe Cāne from Latvia.

Please notice that we respect the ideas and motivation behind artists’ work which is why we’ve given artists full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. And this is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us, but designed from scratch by the artists themselves.
Thanks to all designers for participation. Join in next month! And smashing March, folks!

February 27th, 2009 7:19 amGreat wallpapers. I think Maya Sivalingam and her “Magic Horse” piece should have given some credit to Alvaro Guzman and his tutorial http://psd.tutsplus.com/tutorials/interface-tutorials/create-a-magic-night-themed-web-design-from-scratch-in-photoshop/
. . . since she did almost exactly the same thing.

February 27th, 2009 8:53 amJessica, Space Invaders simply has monday as the first day of the week, it’s not for March 2008. Glad to hear that you like it, though.
Jeff
February 27th, 2009 8:54 amCould you start publishing these in higher resolutions? Like 2560×1600?
Those of us with 30″ Apple Cinema Displays are feeling… ummm… *ahem*… well, disadvantaged.
;)

February 27th, 2009 8:58 amWhy all the wallpapers for wide screens only? :(

February 27th, 2009 9:14 amAm I crazy or does the ‘Gritty St. Pats’ theme look a heckuva lot like the Apple theme featured on Smashing here: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/02/12/really-stunning-desktop-wallpapers/ and linked to http://flickr.com/photos/benadamson/463523405/ ???
Now again, I might be crazy but the ‘Ben.a’ listed at the Flickr link as owning that design probably isn’t the Designed by Chris Wylie from Canada that supposedly designed this ‘Gritty St. Pats’ theme.
If this is the case I hope something is done about it.
Tom Bradshaw
February 27th, 2009 9:28 amGreat selection! “Playing with typography ” is my favourite!!!
Mike Metcalf
February 27th, 2009 9:28 amSome great work here! St. Patrick is my favorite. What’s with the poo though?
Lukas
February 27th, 2009 9:39 amGreat collection :)
But I have a suggestion:
WHY not to make a some sort of SVN?
I’m a KDE user, and I can set a folder as a gallery to be automatically changend and displayed as my
wallpaper. By using SVN I could be able to automatically download newest set of your wallpapers
and set them as my wallpaper gallery.
I understand, that this site ears money from visits, so I would agree to have a few commercial on
wallpapers or even a banner-wallpapers :)

February 27th, 2009 9:42 amMartius Blindness is totally great. it shows the maturity level of the artist and is totally current with the times. not as commercially beautiful perhaps, but artistically and emotionally beautiful in the extreme. this artist has real talent.

February 27th, 2009 10:02 amI think the ‘Gritty St. Pats’ is lifting elements directly from this wallpaper:

February 27th, 2009 12:06 pmEvery one with 1280×960, love it!
Thank you a thousand times over. Awesome website, awesome community.

February 27th, 2009 12:26 pmwell tbh, forcing designers to put “smashing logo” on wallpapers is not fair. They make all the work, you just publish and you get credit, and there will be lots of wallpapers floating around with smashing mag logo on them, even though you are basically doing nothing. If your only aim is to help designers to show off their works why logo is a must. Is flickr, deviantart etc forcing their designers, photographers to put their logo ???? of course no!!!! your way is just plain CHEAP
maryam
February 27th, 2009 12:46 pmMy favorites are “March-09″ ,”Pizzicato Wail” and First Blossoms .
Thank you so much …

March 1st, 2009 3:40 amI love to have a calendar of the month on my desktop but I also like variety. I know I can always come to the web site and find what I’m looking for. I like flowers and if there is a holiday in that month I like to have something that represents that holiday. Thanks Smashing Media for giving me that.

March 1st, 2009 8:05 amNice , but februar was better. Sad, that I need to change it ;) By the way: where is personas calendar? i was counting on it.

March 1st, 2009 12:17 pmOur calls for 1280×1024 keep going unanswered. Smashing Magazine… only YOU have the power to change this.
Josh Clements
March 1st, 2009 1:30 pmThough I personally don’t use any of these when they are posted simply because I tend to use my own work, I get a lot of use out of taking styles and techniques from these pieces.

March 1st, 2009 9:59 pm“How will I fly” has a incorrect calendar. It totally threw me off today but it is easily my favorite one here. PLEASE fix it! I love that picture! It would also be great(as a suggestion) to make two versions of each calendar one that has the week start on mon and one that starts on sun. Just as a thought. It always seems like the coolest ones start on the wrong day so I can’t use them
Keep up the fantastic work!
