Instead of listing 100 plus tutorials that you’ll bookmark never to come back, we’ve decided to take you through the basics of typography, hopefully inspiring and then teaching you. Typography is an art just like any other. You have to feel the form, admire the curves and connect with the flow.

Introduction to Typography

Typography is the art of arranging type, designing type, and modifying type glyphs. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, line spacing (leading), adjustment of space between groups of letters (tracking) and adjustment of space between pairs of letters (kerning).

  22. 23

Thanks for this fantastic post! So educational and so useful. This type of post is why I keep coming back to Smashing.

  23. 24

No offence, but how many MORE times do we need to see a ‘text effect photoshop tutorials’ list showing the same old tutorials again?

    Unique content please!

    • 25

Why don’t you stop being rude and obnoxious and stop coming to this website if you are just gonna be a big meanie!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m offended.

  27. 29

  28. 30

There are some fantastic text effects here, really inspiring stuff. Love the mix of stitching and type think they work great together, also the organic mix of images and textures here blow me away. Nice to see a lot of psdtut’s quality work being showcased.
    Keep up the good work!

  29. 31

    amazing!!! great effects!!

  30. 32

    naldzgraphics.com is suspended
abduzeedo.com is not found (to me at least)

    Amazing article trough!

  31. 33

isnt this an old post? I’ve seen just the same collection before..so either its one of your old post or you ripped someone elses work.

  32. 34

    Absolutelly stunning! Thanx a lot!

  33. 35

    Nice collection of tutorials!

I just wanted to point out that currently, the “Floral” tutoial’s picture’s link adds these two quotation marks at the end, causing a 404 error… But the actual “Floral” text link above it is correct.

  34. 36

    Nice collection. Thanks!

  35. 37

    Words can’t describe the awesomeness

    Some of sites are down/suspended

  36. 38

I usually love the Smashing posts, but I agree w/ a couple of others who said this feels like a post you did before.

  37. 39

I made a Colorful glow text for my blog using this tutorial. Amazing

  38. 40

Way too much AWESOME stuff coming out at the moment, I can’t keep up with it all. Another 10/10 post!

  39. 41

I’m really enjoying this site at the moment – I feel it went downhill a little for a bit, but it’s right back up there now with my top daily reads :)

    Thanks for the compilation.

  40. 42

    awesome ! I bookmarked this site !

  41. 43

Fantastic collection, some great tutorials – great for making ‘normal type’ impressive.

  42. 44

    “Webmaster please contact supportAThostgator.com” that’s what i got when i got there ( Chunky 3D letters ) >_<

  43. 45

Some truly amazing and inspiring examples of great typography and effects. This is a page I will definately being refering back to in the near future.

I especially like the Moonshine and Gold Text Effect tutorials, I can see myself using these in the future – subtle yet effective!

    Thanks very much!

  44. 46

    Thumbs up!

  45. 47

Smashing Magazine continues to consistently blow me away with the stuff you come up with. Excellent!

  46. 48

    simply love it!

  47. 49

Yet again, a Smashing article causes two internal reactions for me:

    1. This is AMAZING. I SO am blown away by this gorgeous stuff!
    2. Man. I really suck.

    Thanks for that?

  48. 50

I found some of them to be pretty formulaic and uninspired, but there’s some excellent work there, some really really well drawn pieces, some really well thought-of. It’s a good compilation. Great job.

  49. 51

    Excellent Round-up!

I really like the fact that you included a section going over the basics of Typography, as this is key when you want to start playing around with text. Not to mention the excellent collection of text effects to apply to the once the type is set. I’m looking forward to playing around with some of these.

  50. 52

    Just wow it!

  51. 53

lots of good ones, thanks guys! probably could have left “corleone” out of this collection though…ha

  52. 54

    this one :

    is suspended :|

and damn, it looked so cool

  53. 56

Yeah, I’ve pretty much seen all of these tutorials at least once before. I mean, they’re still great though, I suppose they’re good refreshers. Thank you!

  54. 58

Amazing post! Very very useful. Annnnnd del.icio.used!

  55. 60

Wow… thanks for posting my tutorial on the list (liquid text). I appreciate it!

With so many text tutorials, this collection is the crème de la crop! Props for saving us all some googling time.

  58. 63

Damn you Smashing! Why must you cram so much good stuff in a single post!? This will make the next few weeks of my life at work even more manic! Must learn Efx!!!

    Thanks *grumbles….*

  59. 64

great check out some at antsmagazine.com

  60. 65

    Excellent!!! Big thanks.

  61. 66

While there are a few tutorials here that I haven’t seen before, I gotta say I’m pretty sick of seeing those psdtuts.com tutorials EVERYWHERE as if people only read one design blog or something and haven’t seen them on multiple sites. Not that they aren’t nice tuts, they’re very high quality, just way too cross-posted. That being said, it is still a nice list with definitely a lot of text effect tutorials.

  62. 67

Seen them ALL before, several times – originality please!

    • 68

Do something yourself rather than criticise others. Very useful resource whether they are available elsewhere or not

  63. 69

Thanks! Great selection I was looking for that.

  64. 70

some tuts are great but some are real crap although they come from normally high quality sites like PSDTUTS. E. g. the flaming meteor text effect is totally bad described and the comments are full of shoulder patting but no help from the author or site owner… this list itself is nice, but somehow have seen most of them before.

  65. 71

Absolutely Stunning Examples…It’s really worth to watch each on of them. Thanks a million!…

  66. 72

Very cool list.I hope I have time to try a couple of them out in the next couple of weeks.

  67. 73

    OMG! Awesome list!

  68. 74

    STUNNING!! man!
good job! time to learn more form the tutorial, whahahahah!!!

  69. 75

I feel it was an overwhelming amount of information. I would much rather have less stuff with only the very high quality ones.

Hey guys, I’m sorry. I love all your posts and I think you guys usually show amazing stuff. But this These text effects weren’t really saying stunning to me! I’m Sorry! the only one that was stunning was “Create Destructive Black and White Lettering with a Dramatic Splash Effect” Most of this stuff were graphics clipped into a text or some fancy lights and shadows… and or bad mix of coloring with tacky executions… I will say this though… You got me commenting… I had to… only because I love your site! and I come here religiously for inspiration about design and technology!

  71. 77

Great list, a couple of the tutorials were filler but otherwise lots of good information.

  72. 78

I would love to see a tutorial on how they created the Kavo Coffee ad. It looks to be in the same vein of the Grammy print ads I saw.

  73. 79

    nice roundup

  74. 80

    best blog bost ever

  75. 81

Some you already showed here before, but thanks for the list, there some great stuff, tought.

  76. 82

Nice article – extra props for linking to Mark Boulton’s invaluable series of typography articles at the top. While a lot of these examples are more ‘flash’ than substance, I found a few of them fun to check out (ie: slow shutter and b/w destructive). Thanks for the post!

    Make Design, Not War

  80. 86

Most of these blogs are posting the same things nowadays. (Smashing Apps copies this blog, I feel) Everyone wants to get rich off of posting “100” resources kinds of posts, so you see the same thing everywhere. Only so much to post, so there are a lot of repeats.

I really wish that someone would put in a lot more thought and instead of searching google for “x-tutorials” (which we can all do) they would actually break down why something is effective and back it up with some usage stats.

Too many blogs posting the same thing and links to 500 sites. Please do some original work.

On the other hand, I do come to this site every day, so you must be doing something right!

  81. 87

Love it as always. Keep them coming.

If a man’s mind is capable of creating such effects, then I wonder when I try to think of his Creator’s….. I mean….. it leaves us with no choice but to worship and praise HIM. Great stuff guys!!!

  174. 181

are you kidding me? doing a few of these will definitely help improve my design ability. thanks andrew! i think the guy who commented above about not seeing more than one stunning example here is missing the point. it’s all art, so he doesn’t have to like it. but the point is you’ve provided countless hours of knowledge so that we can all benefit. and it’s all available in one page. thanks for giving me more than a semester’s worth of learning tools! i’m inspired…

  175. 182

WOW! Fantastic post. Really helpful for me.

First of all, I’m not a Photographer. Secondly, I don’t know anything at all about Photoshop but I want to learn. I really like text effects and fantasy pictures that Photoshop Artists make. Thats my word for ‘em because these really are works of art. I just wish I could do them. Anyway, I have Photoshop CC and now I just need to learn how to use it. I’m a disabled Vietnam Vet and I’m retired and 64 years old so I’ve got plenty of time on my hands to learn Photoshop although it isn’t my only interest.

  203. 211

How is the coffee-wrapping-esque effect text created?

  204. 212

it is also a very nice text style: glossy-text-styles

Hi, I’d just like to point out that the “Flaming Meteor Text” is a broken link. It is a redirect to a tutorial website. A quick Google search gave me this link: http://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/create-a-spectacular-flaming-meteor-effect-on-text–psd-50
