Typography is the art of arranging type, designing type, and modifying type glyphs. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, line spacing (leading), adjustment of space between groups of letters (tracking) and adjustment of space between pairs of letters (kerning).

- 46March 5th, 2009 5:42 am
simply love it!
- 47March 5th, 2009 5:49 am
Sigh.
Yet again, a Smashing article causes two internal reactions for me:
1. This is AMAZING. I SO am blown away by this gorgeous stuff!
2. Man. I really suck.Thanks for that?
- 48March 5th, 2009 5:50 am
I found some of them to be pretty formulaic and uninspired, but there’s some excellent work there, some really really well drawn pieces, some really well thought-of. It’s a good compilation. Great job.
- 49March 5th, 2009 6:02 am
Excellent Round-up!
I really like the fact that you included a section going over the basics of Typography, as this is key when you want to start playing around with text. Not to mention the excellent collection of text effects to apply to the once the type is set. I’m looking forward to playing around with some of these.
- 50March 5th, 2009 6:13 am

great check out some at antsmagazine.com
- 60March 5th, 2009 11:05 am
Excellent!!! Big thanks.
- 61March 5th, 2009 11:52 am
While there are a few tutorials here that I haven’t seen before, I gotta say I’m pretty sick of seeing those psdtuts.com tutorials EVERYWHERE as if people only read one design blog or something and haven’t seen them on multiple sites. Not that they aren’t nice tuts, they’re very high quality, just way too cross-posted. That being said, it is still a nice list with definitely a lot of text effect tutorials.
- 62March 5th, 2009 1:09 pm
Seen them ALL before, several times – originality please!
- 63March 5th, 2009 1:32 pm
Thanks! Great selection I was looking for that.
- 64March 5th, 2009 2:09 pm
some tuts are great but some are real crap although they come from normally high quality sites like PSDTUTS. E. g. the flaming meteor text effect is totally bad described and the comments are full of shoulder patting but no help from the author or site owner… this list itself is nice, but somehow have seen most of them before.
- 65March 5th, 2009 2:42 pm
Absolutely Stunning Examples…It’s really worth to watch each on of them. Thanks a million!…
- 66March 5th, 2009 2:44 pm
Very cool list.I hope I have time to try a couple of them out in the next couple of weeks.
- 67March 5th, 2009 6:55 pm
OMG! Awesome list!
- 68March 5th, 2009 7:43 pm
STUNNING!! man!
good job! time to learn more form the tutorial, whahahahah!!! - 69March 5th, 2009 9:47 pm
I feel it was an overwhelming amount of information. I would much rather have less stuff with only the very high quality ones.
- 70March 5th, 2009 10:48 pm
Hey guys, I’m sorry. I love all your posts and I think you guys usually show amazing stuff. But this These text effects weren’t really saying stunning to me! I’m Sorry! the only one that was stunning was “Create Destructive Black and White Lettering with a Dramatic Splash Effect” Most of this stuff were graphics clipped into a text or some fancy lights and shadows… and or bad mix of coloring with tacky executions… I will say this though… You got me commenting… I had to… only because I love your site! and I come here religiously for inspiration about design and technology!
- 71March 6th, 2009 12:49 am
Great list, a couple of the tutorials were filler but otherwise lots of good information.
- 72March 6th, 2009 9:11 am
I would love to see a tutorial on how they created the Kavo Coffee ad. It looks to be in the same vein of the Grammy print ads I saw.

- 79March 7th, 2009 3:28 pm
Nice article – extra props for linking to Mark Boulton’s invaluable series of typography articles at the top. While a lot of these examples are more ‘flash’ than substance, I found a few of them fun to check out (ie: slow shutter and b/w destructive). Thanks for the post!
- 80March 8th, 2009 10:05 pm
@subsist
Most of these blogs are posting the same things nowadays. (Smashing Apps copies this blog, I feel) Everyone wants to get rich off of posting “100″ resources kinds of posts, so you see the same thing everywhere. Only so much to post, so there are a lot of repeats.I really wish that someone would put in a lot more thought and instead of searching google for “x-tutorials” (which we can all do) they would actually break down why something is effective and back it up with some usage stats.
Too many blogs posting the same thing and links to 500 sites. Please do some original work.
On the other hand, I do come to this site every day, so you must be doing something right!
- 81March 9th, 2009 4:00 am
Love it as always. Keep them coming.
