New Smashing Freebies For Designers and Bloggers
As you may or may not know, we love to smash freebies around. Today we are glad to release the Web Developer icons set, designed by Pedja Rusic, a WP Smashing WordPress theme, designed by Greg Johnson and a Cafe icon set, designed by Enk. All icons and the theme are available for free download and can be used without any restrictions whatsoever. Please feel free to suggest ideas for next icon sets or single icons in the comments to this post.
Web Developer Icons Set
We have noticed Pedja Rusic from Serbia over a year ago, when we presented his icon sets in our free icons round-up. A while ago we contacted him and commissioned the design of icons dedicated to designers and developers. The icons should pay close attention to the smallest details, look original, cool and still remain recognizable.
The result of Pedja’s work is the Web Developer Icons Set, a set of 34 icons designed from scratch; these icons are primarily supposed to be used by bloggers and designers. The icons are available in the resolutions .ico, .icns and .png in various resolutions up to 512×512px. The set contains icons Comments icon, Home, Mail, RSS and user-related icons.
Download the set for free!
You can use the set for all of your projects for free and without any restrictions. You can freely use it for both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. The set may not be resold, sublicensed, rented, transferred or otherwise made available for use. Please link to this article if you would like to spread the word.
Inspiration behind the design
As usual, here are some insights from the designer himself:
The design of icons for this set was definitely the most difficult one in my career. I never had more trouble while the makin’ was in progress. My computer exploded 2 times, I had several losses in my family, my airport and modem were damaged… etc. The set was supposed to be launched like the year before, but considering all the difficutes that have happend, I consider myself one persistan bastard! Plus I was attacked by a dog in my house while i was doing the set… So I give the most hardest, and mind blowing set of icons I ever made!
WP Smashing WordPress Theme
We are always looking for creative and unusual concepts and we are always glad to support designers and developers to implement the idea and make it available to the public. Just recently we released the ViewPort WordPress Theme that presents the content in a single-page-’viewport’ and showcasing bloggers’ posts in a visually appealing form. Magazeen theme uses drop-down-menus and an automated jQuery-based image showcase and thus makes image manipulation for posts easier and more flexible.
Greg Johnson‘s theme WP Smashing is also an example for such kind of themes. The main goal of the theme was to display WordPress posts in calendar format. The theme is widget-ready, WordPress 2.7 compatible, has an integrated configurable calendar functionality and a configurable contact form. Installation guidelines are provided in the package. The .PSD-source file is included as well.

Inspiration behind the design
As usual, here are some insights from the designer himself:
WP SMASHING started out as an exercise in displaying WordPress posts in calendar format. The uses for this kind of functionality are obvious and I haven’t come across a plugin or theme that accomplished this goal in the manner I was after.
WP SMASHING accomplishes this by way of a companion plugin, written specifically for this theme. Knowing that not everyone will want to display their posts this way, the plugin offers you the ability to choose how you want to display posts on the index and in the archive — using a calendar or a two-column listing of post excerpts (much like Smashing Magazine). If you choose to display posts as a calendar, the titles of each post are displayed for each day. If the title(s) are larger than the relatively small square allotted for a calendar day, a custom scroll bar is shown allowing the user to scroll through your posts.
WP SMASHING is completely widget-ready and features 4 configurable ‘side bars’. One of these side bars is the right column — navigation — on every page except for if/when the calendar is displayed. The other 3 side bars are incorporated into footer. Also integrated into the footer is a contact form which includes validation and also includes options in the companion plugin.
Bonus: Café Icon Set
Last year we decided to stop releasing “social” icon setes in 2009, since there were way too many similar sets out there. However, when a beautiful set comes along, it is sometimes really hard to say ‘no’. This is the basic reason why this post also offers the set “Café Icon Set” as bonus to the first set. This set was designed by Enk from Hyderabad, Pakistan especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers. The set contains 9 .png-images in the formats 256×256px, including 8 social icons (Twitter, Flickr, StumbleUpon, Digg, Technorati, Mixx, Delicious, RSS) and Smashing Magazine.

March 17th, 2009 12:16 amI dont know if it is just me but in safari for os x seems like the file with the cafe icon set is missing the header and I am getting the plain text. The only way to save it is right click save target as.

March 17th, 2009 1:14 amExcellent designs all round – one thing regarding the theme is that it might be better to not have the search bar start as hidden via the css and hide it when the DOM is loaded with JS. Otherwise anyone with JS disabled will have no search bar.

March 17th, 2009 5:22 amI like the WordPress theme but it’s very dark and difficult to see certain things. You may want to lighten the dark gray color at the top.

March 18th, 2009 10:25 amI think it’s awesome that you guys provide high quality WordPress themes. But I’m considering moving my blog from WP to either Drupal or (less likely) Joomla and thought it would be awesome if you guys could throw some Smashing weight in that direction. :)

March 18th, 2009 11:29 amGreg, how did you create those sweet highlights in the footer? They look like light emanating from a wall sconce or something. In the PSD all that you see is the FX Color Overlay.
Nice job.

March 26th, 2009 10:01 pmThe coffees do look wonderful, but when I click on the download link, I am taken to a page of code instead of having the icons download. It isn’t my computer, because the developer icons download just fine. [Thanks!!] Seems to be a bad link for the coffee icons, though.

April 18th, 2009 5:30 amIndeed very nice theme guys.
But I am having a problem, when I installed the theme on wordpress 2.7, and in the theme settings I used…
1. Index Template: Show Posts on Index
2. Archive Template: Show Posts for Monthly Archive
But the problem is when ever I post something, on the main page I cannot see any images etc… but when I enter the post I can see them.
So what should I do to make images visible on the home page.

January 22nd, 2010 8:16 pmThis comment contained accusations that Smashing Editorial team could not verify or prove wrong. We ask both Tim Parker and Greg Johnson to discuss the issue personally and externally.
I’d like to apologize to the rest of people here, however my response is slightly off-topic.
We hired Greg Johnson of Greg-J.com and BustATheme to deliver certain project for our company. Not only he never delivered, he has been avoiding our phone calls and emails.
No effort has been put from his end to initiate a contact. He took 50% down payment and since he has disappeared from the face of planet.

April 21st, 2010 6:59 pmNot sure if you’ll get this or not Tim but I just purchased Greg Johnson’s WP-SLIDER theme 24 hours ago and have yet to hear anything from him. Did he ever follow up with you? I’m trying to decide if I give him more time or if he’s just become untrustworthy.
Thanks for your time.

April 23rd, 2010 10:14 amGreg contacted me today, 3 days after purchase. I guess he wasn’t getting the notification from Google Checkout. Ultimately, all is well. Now… down to work.

May 23rd, 2010 12:58 pmAny freelancer who has been doing this long enough will have a list – some longer, some shorter – of clients they eventually had to fire. It is our ability to fire our clients that makes freelancing the worthwhile venture so many find it to be.
Unfortunately, under no circumstances will either side of such an outcome see eye to eye. Perception, being relative, is always in the eye of the beholder. In these situations, the client will feel cheated, the provider will feel justified.
With that said, I must respect the nature of my Non-Disclosure with this company along with the wishes of my colleagues here at Smashing Magazine, and leave it at that.
The Google Checkout situation with Chris, and 3 others, has hopefully been resolved and Google Checkout orders will automatically notify us.
