Why does every article about Twitter have to start with something like “If you haven’t heard of Twitter by now, you must be living under a rock!”? So cliche. :-P @mccambridge
- 3March 17th, 2009 6:17 am
isn’t too much twitter?

@Sean McCambridge I agree, not the better way to start the article. Though, I’d like to show that phrase to my French friends that ignore the exitence of twitter and worst, find it useless comparing with facebook! Hope twitter will know the success it deserves here and one day one would say “si vous n’avez jamais entendu parlé de twitter, c’est vraiment que vous ne sortez jamais de chez vous”!
- 10March 17th, 2009 7:18 am
Wow, great thanks!
- 11March 17th, 2009 7:20 am
99, 50, 75, … so many long lists. Yes, it’s useful to get in one place all those links. But, isn’t it too much ? There’s a point where a list is relevant and a point where it is just another list among a bunch of long lists. At least, put a table of contents at the top of the article. Great effort in all cases.
- 12March 17th, 2009 7:38 am
Great List. Thx.
- 13March 17th, 2009 7:39 am
Thanks for the list which covers most applications I appreciate. I strongly suggest you also check out http://MicroPlaza.com and its Tribal Search which has just been released under private beta and which provides a mix of Digg, Delicious and RSS that allows you to browse, search and monitor relevant news tweeted by the people or groups of people you follow… and lot’s more.
An example is this search for the most popular and freshest articles from the Smashing Magazine website: http://microplaza.com/search?q=url%3Awww.smashingmagazine.com

Well maybe we live under a rock here in Denmark, but I reckon that I’m the only one I know who’s using Twitter – and I’m studying computer science at the university.
- 15March 17th, 2009 8:10 am
Yeah for twitter. Now I can read nonsense from people I don’t know. Myspace and Facebook commments took just too long to read. Anyone else hear of grunter?
- 16March 17th, 2009 8:34 am
I just dont get twitter, or maybe I’m just not so self-absorbed to think that anyone would want to hear my every annoying thought on anything… or that I’m that too important that I must share all my thoughts with everyone.
I have facebook, last.fm, blip.fm… ect, and I like to keep up with my friends… but my god do I need to know you just took a dump at 4:24am last night, and now your trying to get back to sleep??
Maybe I’m to introverted for social networking. or too extroverted to waste my time behind a computer?
- 17March 17th, 2009 8:37 am
I just don’t get what in the world is so great about twitter that every third article here on smashingmag has to feature the great 1000 brand new twitter uber-cool-extensions that makes telling everyone at what time you take a shit even faster and easier…

How can SEO and a search engine marketing campaign improve Leadsmarketer website (www.leadsmarketer.com) position in the search engines? Our marketing and sales department invested a lot of resources in writing all the content for our web site but we just can’t seem to be ranking high enough in the engines, while our competition is on top. Do we have to re-write it all over again?
- 19March 17th, 2009 9:02 am
If there are 99 ESSENTIAL Twitter tools then tweeting just got way too complicated for me.
- 20March 17th, 2009 9:21 am
Quite an exhaustive list!
Have you tried Tweetree for viewing tweets with links embedded and replies in context?
- 21March 17th, 2009 9:22 am
Twitter is completely useless, I really dont understand the enthousiasm around this thing… But I also dont understand the frequency of articles about it.
- 22March 17th, 2009 9:37 am
Not even a mention of Twictur.es?
- 23March 17th, 2009 9:38 am
Twitter Tools?
You’re missing the main one, YOU.
You can use every single one of these tools, but without YOU tweeting interesting things, what’s the point? And to the person/people who think twitter is useless.
I’ve got work through twitter, and all i had to do was be myself.
It’s a fantastic community full of interesting people.
I understand why people may not want to use it, but to call it useless is going a bit far.
It has a use, just maybe not for you. - 24March 17th, 2009 9:49 am
twitter is not about having 200 pseudo-friends and telling them every little detail about your life! It permits keeping the link with close people without all the “blablabla they-write-so-much and the I’m-buying-you stuff ” of facebook. I find a good website on the net? I send the adress on twitter, I planning a travel to Paris? Telling my friends when i’m coming! FAST, SIMPLE. And it seems to be a very usefull marketing tool also.
- 25March 17th, 2009 9:50 am
hootsuite is pretty awesome! It allows to connect and update to one or more twitter accounts at the same time.

Great list. There is actually a new useful tool just released last week called twendz. It helps get through the clutter.
http://twendz.waggeneredstrom.com/
twendz is a Twitter mining Web application that utilizes the power of Twitter Search, highlighting conversation themes and sentiment of the tweets that talk about topics you are interested in. As the conversation changes, so does twendz by evaluating up to 70 tweets at a time. When new tweets are posted, they are dynamically updated, minute by minute.

- 34March 17th, 2009 11:00 am
Also check out http://urlcatch.com – URL shortener that gives you the ability to post to Twitter from IM (a basic Twitter IM account). Pretty neat!
- 35March 17th, 2009 11:36 am
Sorry about my rather spammy previous comment. Seems this site’s HTML parser mangles things a lot. Those links were supposed to be named “Tweetmeme”, “Tweetmeme button” and “Tweetmeme Wordpress widget” respectively.
- 36March 17th, 2009 11:39 am
Sounds like great post for Twitter junkies.
- 37March 17th, 2009 1:01 pm

- 40March 17th, 2009 1:26 pm
Wow, this is quite the list! I admit to using Twellow, TwitterGrader, Twitpic, and Qwitter – but Remember the Milk sounds fabulous – I’m definitely going to check it out. I’ve made amazing contacts on Twitter and find myself checking several times a day from my webtop – so an tool helps.

What about CMYKTweet?
It’s a nice mashup to tweet in CMYK! :)twitter.com/joffrey
Geek and Hype - 42March 17th, 2009 2:57 pm
I’d just like to mention a couple, firstly WeFollow.com http://wefollow.com (a simple directory by Kevin Rose/Digg founder) and *shameless plug* TwitStamp.com http://twitstamp.com which generates an auto-updating image from your tweets, to use as a widget on your site, email signature, etc.

Stop this right now. 99 *essential* tools? This bullshit must stop.

I suggest this site, http://www.twtmap.com, for ppl create a map url and tweet it.
- 50March 17th, 2009 7:08 pm
This is one of the most appalling headlines I’ve ever seen for one of these fluffy link-baiting articles. I pray that the author simply doesn’t know what the word “essential” means. How could any reasonable person ever need ninety-nine Twitter “tools”? What would life be like using ninety-nine of these “tools” in various combinations?
It is admirable of Smashing Magazine to try to document the best of the recent glut of Twitter peripherals, but it is undignified, misleading, and inane to bill this list with the claim of being “essential.”
- 51March 17th, 2009 7:43 pm
Hello everyone, it’s Bigdoggpinc. If it is useful you know I am close by trying to get the word out about it! I learned about most of these from M…. and I was glad they are Twitter users as well. Even found my Pastor of my church is on Twitter. These tools helps you stay really connected, with power networking at its best. My network is stronger thanks to these tools. – TRY IT!
- 52March 17th, 2009 8:08 pm

- 57March 18th, 2009 1:30 am

I would like to add my new Twitter search service to the mix:
It is a real-time Twitter search tool that has been designed to help users surface useful information from the ‘Twittershere’. It features a couple of features such as allowing users to ‘play’ and ‘pause’ search result streams – making it ideal for following breaking news, live blogging / tweeting and keynotes etc.
I hope some of you find it of use…
- 67March 18th, 2009 6:14 am
Also, you should take a look at http://www.tweetpoint.me, pretty cool web app developed to let the users rate other users on the things they are tweeting about. Check it out!
- 68March 18th, 2009 7:43 am
Thanks for sharing that wealth I’ll let the readers at http://www.isteconnects.org/ no about your article. Thanks Again!
- 69March 18th, 2009 10:57 am
The article is extensive and good. But I also agree with many that it is way too long and the title is misleading. No way there can be 99 essential applications. Essential means you cannot do without it, and none in the list are essential in that way, they’re all optional enrichments of Twitter.
I don’t know about the rest, but I visit sites like Smashing too save time, they do the excellent work in compiling these great lists. Lately, however, the lists are becoming so long that they do the opposite: they only costs me MORE time. I’m know at a point where if I see a list like this, I usually skip it all together. Who has the time to read about 99 Twitter applications? Just give me a top 5 or 10.
This has nothing to do with the quality of the content or the extensive effort that went into that. It’s just that the purpose of finding only the best content is defeated this way.
- 70March 18th, 2009 1:14 pm
dont forget twitterhawk.com, great for generating leads on twitter.
- 71March 18th, 2009 2:09 pm

Twitter is just “exciting” I guess because its so damn easy. In fact its so easy thats why its a little difficult to “get it”.
The list above is just a fine example of the mad amount of tools out there but not one of them is ever “essential”. They are only essential if you need them and if you need them they they are worth it!
I hope the momentum keeps going, I love to see these new apps appearing and the crazy ideas people have and the things they can produce. Just look at twitter as the new form of text on phones that’s free and soon to replace mobile texting…and maybe even google search…but that’s a different story isnt it.

It’s understandable if one doesn’t want to use Twitter, but it’s a little sad that anyone in the design industry wouldn’t understand the value. Create an account and follow a few industry leaders like Cameron Moll, Daniel Benjamin, or Eric Meyer and you’ll see why: the stream of information you receive is clean, useful, and personal. That’s what separates it from your buddy’s MySpace page: intent and execution.
Also, I think it’s good to highlight one of the most useful and sought after uses of Twitter Karma — bulk follow/unfollow. You can view everyone who follows you and whom you follow, check any number of them, and with one click, follow or unfollow all of the people you’ve checked.
On the subject of this being too long of a list: IMO, maybe it is for one sitting. However, keep in mind that many of these apps are extremely useful, and there is some overlap. One person may prefer Twutter to TweetLater, and so giving one the options available to them is beneficial.

Awesome list.
You might want to check out Twitdom also. It is a Twitter Applications Database with nearly 600 Twitter Applications listed.

#100 – HootSuite

You forgot another good one for knowing who’s following you, StillFollowingMe.com. You enter a specific username and see if they are still following your account. Really easy to use. Doesn’t require you to give up your passwords. Otherwise! Great list!

If you think all this is good then wait till you see the NextWave 3 of Showcaze (www.showcaze.co.uk).
Showcaze is currently achieving a higher revenue per subscriber than Twitter, Facebook and many of the Freebie sites.
What matters most in the real world is that you have CUSTOMERS willing to PAY for your services, because they find the service useful, not just novel. Anyone can flog a Freebie.

I can’t believe Tweetie was missed. It totally made me doubt the entire list. Tweetie for iPhone and now for Mac is by far the best Twitter app…
- 102April 26th, 2009 5:21 pm
Wow, this is an amazing list! I’ve seen and used a bunch of these but it’s going to take time to get through all of them… a bit overwhelming. Thanks!
Here’s another Twitter tool not mentioned: Peekr.
If you’re like me and you like to see interesting background images when someone has a custom Twitter profile, you can easily see the full Twitter background image using the peekr “twidget” to take a quick peek at their full background image.
It’s a free bookmarklet (a.k.a. favelet) available at http://www.peekr.net.

If you dont want to hand over your twitter usernames and passwords to a third party website but want to implement a “keyword” autofollow
Or
if you are running multiple accounts and need more than 100 api hits an hour (if you get your ip address whitelisted you can get 20,000 api calls an hour). Then check out http://www.MyTwitterButler.com for $10 it’s a windows .net application that run directly on your pc instead of in the cloud.
It does two things;
1/ Auto Follows Users with up to 4 search terms per twitter account (allows multiple accoutns – I run mine with 11 accounts simultaneously but it slows it down).
2/ Direct Message Broadcast – you can send a direct message to all you users with just one click.
Cheers,
Dean - 111May 24th, 2009 4:36 pm
I noticed a few friend management tools in the list, my most frequently used one is probably tweeptracker.com simple and straightforward but saves me a lot of time. Allows me to see who i follow but doesnt follow back, then unfriend or block as I like. As well as adding those that follow me but I don’t follow.

All I can say is THANK YOU! I have been on a hunt looking for all these applications and I am glad you have them all listed here. You left out one more that I thought was really really great because its showing people how they can get paid on Twitter.
Stephen Pierce just posted his Definitive Twitter Resource Guide on his blog. It has 201 Twitter Tools and Twitter Apps. It’s a free pdf download on his blog. I think its a very good tool. http://www.dtalpha.com/talkback/?p=355

I’m starting a new Twitter app that will work like Tweetdeck but also allow you to do a whole lot more. Lots more columns will be allowed and up to five accounts on at the same time. I haven’t gotten it completely done yet and need some testers to try it out and tell me whether they like it. Just email me and I’ll give you an invitation to check it out.

We just released a reverse phone search application for Twitter. It leverages the power of Twitter and WhitePages.com to allow users to look up an unknown phone number inside of Twitter! In addition, it cross-references 2Gator.com to see if a phone number has had a complaint filed against it previously.

Hello
We would like to notify you about Twittospheric, a website we just opened.
Twittospheric let you see in real-time all tweets about any topic like if you were in the twittosphere!
It’s a fun & cool way also to explain to your friends what is Twitter ;) with an original visualisation of the new tweets, there, up in the higher skies! - 123July 5th, 2009 11:29 am
A great new twitter friend adder (and cheap) at http://twitterontherun.com
Great for adding friends on twitter. Runs in the background slowly finding people and getting rid of people that don’t follow you back. You can target who you want to follow. Great twitter tool. - 124

A great list. I’m not sure our app is “essential”, but it’s a lot of fun – it’s free Twitter printer that makes printer friendly output from your Twitter tweets. You can include Twitpic.com images and user avatars. Try it and see, it’s http://twitprint.com
- 126July 16th, 2009 6:44 pm
I think it is also worth mentioning Twitroduce which has been described as a formalizing #FollowFriday.
Also, for branded URL shortening, 9MP.

Hi Paul,
Will you please add utwitbook to the Search Twitter Apps, it’s new twitter-er search engine, and it supports many advanced search features, e.g. seach in fields, search by design colors, search in friends of some twitter-er, search by follower count range…, and it’s pretty fast.
Regards,
Andrew - 133September 12th, 2009 8:23 pm

Another app worth mentioning is – http://TweetMiner.net – brings together an RSS reader and Twitter into one nice simple, clean interface. It allows the user to instantly post from the feeds to Twitter. It also allows the user to schedule the Tweet for a later time.

You should also check out AUTOPILOT TWEET – http://www.autopilottweet.com – great app for getting followers at Twitter and scheduling tweets, automating boring Twitter tasks :)
