Weird, Confusing and Irritating Photography
We daily come across with so many photos some of them are good while some are not happening. Some photos are so ordinary that you hardly keep them in mind while some of the photos are simply outstanding and awesome pieces of photography that you reminisce them again and again, and just wonder how photographer has taken such a beautiful picture. You always summon up these photos to muster some clue that how these photos have been taken.
Here we are sharing photos that can boggle your mind. Some of the photos among them are perplexing and mystifying. So are you ready to get bewildered?
Weird, Confusing and Irritating Photos
All reflections considered (no photo manipulation)

“It never ceases to amaze me the different colours and effects you can achieve in a boring concrete R.C.P drain.”
Sea in the sea
Incredible scenery. Apparently, the shot was made on the boat in the middle of the sea.
AmsterS@m The Wicked Reflectah
“Old School Beauty BMW reflected in a puddle in Amsterdam…no Photoshop, as usual, just some added saturation and contrast.”
Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus, London

These photos are amazing. It’s awesome to see what a change of perspective can do to a scene.
- 6March 29th, 2009 9:17 pm
weird, confusing and irritating indeed..
Some pics are too much of irritating.
I liked this one:
“I know what I want out of life. yet I still don’t know how to get there.” - 7March 29th, 2009 9:55 pm
Everyone finishing sentences with smiley faces is irritating… :)
- 8March 29th, 2009 9:56 pm
I think timing and composition are two prime factors for clicking these kind of photographs…Kudos to all those master minds who were behind the camera and smashingmagazine for making such a nice collection.
- 9March 29th, 2009 10:28 pm
wow!! nice collection, thanks :)

Awesome pictures! Thanks for the list :)
- 12March 29th, 2009 11:18 pm
Quite a few weird and amazing photos, but they just look like the photographers were out of ideas and they pushed themselves to find some. Sometimes the best photos come out unintentionally by the beauty of inner inspiration and motivation.
- 13March 29th, 2009 11:44 pm
“Last Drop” is beautiful!
- 14March 29th, 2009 11:53 pm

- 20March 30th, 2009 1:08 am
just ok ! nothing new ! something that we have always seen !
- 21March 30th, 2009 1:13 am
Those picts confirm that perspective changes everything … and not only on photography.
- 22March 30th, 2009 1:21 am
There are some good images here, though none are particularly ‘irritating’.
- 23March 30th, 2009 2:33 am
Hey Really Great Collection.. some photos are really confusing.. and weird

- 28March 30th, 2009 4:30 am
Too funny! Alternate title: Pretentious Photography
- 29March 30th, 2009 4:36 am
Irritating? Not at all. Fascinating! At least as long it’s not the love child of a crappy picture & photoshop …
- 30March 30th, 2009 4:41 am
good photography
- 31March 30th, 2009 5:18 am
Nice pictures…

- 33March 30th, 2009 5:43 am
Irritating, Creepy, Self-absorbed, Pretentious, Contrived, Hackneyed and Pointless Photography (’cept the beamer – love the beamer shot – doesn’t belong here).
- 34March 30th, 2009 6:04 am
quite interesting. some tips on the techniques involved would have been nice..
- 35March 30th, 2009 7:04 am
Hey, remember when you wrote about web design? Or at the very least, techniques in digital art? For weeks, you’ve been going the absurdly lazy route and doing tons of meaningless “gallery” posts about photography that’s irrelevant to web design as a whole.
Somebody please take this site back to its roots. One relevant post a week is better than five that suck.
- 37March 30th, 2009 7:38 am
Interesting, I like these.
- 38March 30th, 2009 7:49 am
using technical skill to say nothing. maybe there is point of view, but it isn’t very interesting. forgetful moments.
- 39March 30th, 2009 8:02 am
some interesting shots
- 40March 30th, 2009 8:13 am
My favorite is easily “Touch the Moon.” What the hell?…I couldn’t stop laughing.
- 41March 30th, 2009 8:30 am
@Smashing Editorial
A post about “irritating photography” doesn’t sound all that inspirational to me.
- 42March 30th, 2009 8:52 am
Some photos give me a good smile indeed. Thanks Smashing, a refreshing post. I like it.
- 43March 30th, 2009 8:57 am
A nice little showcase. I like these… one doesn’t necessarily learn anything but it’s just nice to relax and check it out. :)
- 44March 30th, 2009 9:08 am
thats very, very great.
thanks - 45
- 46March 30th, 2009 1:14 pm
Reminds me of the Stephen Wright Joke: “What would a chair look like if your knees bent the other way?”
- 47March 30th, 2009 2:10 pm
Fly by .. is a long exposure shot of a plane landing .. nothing weird confusing or irritating about it. Same with a whole bunch of the other pictures in this post.
- 48March 30th, 2009 2:45 pm
Cool, but many of those “photographs” are actually works of graphic design, not pure photographs.
- 49March 30th, 2009 7:29 pm
lol A lot of these pics I had to think about for a while and tilt my head and such. Very cool. :)
- 50March 30th, 2009 7:58 pm
Very interesting !
How can I buy your magazine in China? - 51March 30th, 2009 8:13 pm
hahahaha =)))))) but those pictures look very cool ;)
- 52March 30th, 2009 8:19 pm
That was a great Collection !!!
They really are irritating !!! - 53March 30th, 2009 9:02 pm
Very interesting collection.
Just out of curiosity, how on earth did the 1st paragraph of text that introduces this piece get past the editors of SM? That is atrocious english. I understand if the author does not speak English as a first language, that’s fine, but somebody at SM could have taken about 20 seconds to rewrite that first paragraph. Very disappointing to see something like that — considering SM is obviously doing quite well and can afford proper copy editing.
- 54March 31st, 2009 12:06 am
Whats the point in this article? Rubbish.
- 55March 31st, 2009 1:34 am

Wow very nice pieces! thanks for sharing!
- 60March 31st, 2009 7:05 am
@ Louis – I couldn’t have said it better myself. I’ve been very annoyed at the lack of rewrites on this site lately. ESL is one thing, but come on. If I were to write in Spanish I would hope that a Spanish editor would give me some help. I would need it badly.
Weird, Confusing and Irritating Photography is a totally subjective title. As the comments attest, what someone finds “irritating” could be great to someone else. I have no issue with photography articles, in fact I think they very much belong on a web design focused site. If you are going to title an article as a critique, fine – I could use more thoughtful analysis as to why that’s the case. I’m all for creative counterpoint but this really falls short of that.
- 61March 31st, 2009 7:20 am
my, i love it
- 62April 1st, 2009 4:36 am
Eh. The majority of these photos are not even photography, but extreme post-processing and graphic design. The only photo that truly does anything for me is the “Fish Face” – an example of actual photography – which is perfectly composed, witty, and interesting.
I’m sorry, but most of this stuff just looks like emo/hipster I’m-trying-so-hard-to-deconstruct-art-and-make-a-message crap that you see every day. There’s nothing exciting or inspiring about it. Give me talented photographers who can capture the beauty and/or chaos of reality, or who can frame a great idea (like with “Fish Face”), and forget these Photoshop-addicted wannabes.
- 63April 1st, 2009 6:07 am
Wow! Very nice collection. I like FE the most.
- 64April 1st, 2009 11:32 pm
Good collection. Thanks)

- 66April 3rd, 2009 3:00 am
those photos are inspiration ideas.. :) great jobs. great shots and great manipulations..
but I dont understand why you guys calling it Irritating..Thanks for posting!
- 67April 3rd, 2009 6:48 pm
These are just awful and not very creative. I think that’s what makes them irritating, we expect more and get less.
- 68April 4th, 2009 10:25 pm
some are amazing~
I like these so much~
thank u - 69April 5th, 2009 1:31 pm
Some are creepy!
- 70April 6th, 2009 11:42 pm
Wow! That’s some insane stuff! Great!
- 71April 7th, 2009 8:09 am
Forgive my (very very) poor english…
“Sea in the sea” was just made with an different angle of mirror, not necessarly made from an boat.
“Sea in the sea” foi feito só com um angulo diferente do espelho, não necessariamente feito a partir de um barco.
- 72April 8th, 2009 6:51 am
Irritating indeed ;)
- 73April 9th, 2009 11:15 am
i love it. :]

Photoshopped.
I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time. - 78May 2nd, 2009 12:56 pm
As one of the photographers featured and a friend of some of the others, I feel that I should respond to the claims of heavy manipulation and post processing. For the most part, the manipulation or trickery you’re seeing has been done in front of the lens by hand without the crutch of Photoshop.
Sure, some of the work rests on the border of design and photography, but does that make it pretentious or irritating? Surely nobody thinks that about Strom Thorgerson’s album covers.
I can’t speak for everybody—Hermin Abramovitch clearly pastes things into his photos to make them more interesting—but I’m motivated by visualizing intangible ideas often only expressed through words or capturing what is overlooked in daily life, not just sensationalizing little things.
- 79May 7th, 2009 4:46 pm
@Jason Rydquist
If you like what you create, then you’ve done your job, haven’t you? While I understand your desire to clear up any misunderstandings about manipulation and post-processing, you’re not going to convince people who don’t like these photos in particular, or this style of art in general, to change their preferences.
Surely nobody thinks that about Strom Thorgerson’s album covers
Contrary to your claim, I’m sure that there are people who do find Storm Thorgerson’s artwork irritating. I personally like most of his album covers, although not all. The cover of The Cranberries’ Bury the Hatchet feels too forced for me, while I love the relative simplicity of his artwork for Umphrey’s McGee’s Safety in Numbers.
Sure, some of the work rests on the border of design and photography, but does that make it pretentious or irritating?
Oftentimes? Yes.
[...] visualizing intangible ideas often only expressed through words or capturing what is overlooked in daily life
And some photographers and/or graphic designers can make this work. Many, however, just come across as trying too hard to be deconstructive and relevant. I prefer my art to be more sincere than that.
- 80May 21st, 2009 4:47 am
