Ultimate Collection Of Useful Photoshop Plug-Ins

Can Photoshop do everything? Of course, it can. But one should have extreme skills, plenty of experience and a great deal of time before retouching images or creating graphics pixel by pixel. Photoshop is an amazing graphics application that has forever changed graphic, Web design and digital photo editing.

One should know how to use Photoshop to its full potential to get the most stunning results. This is where Photoshop plug-ins come in handy. (Plug-ins aside, though, if you have time to acquire extreme skills, we encourage you to do so because there is nothing better than learning something new.)

Featured below is the ultimate collection of useful Adobe Photoshop plug-ins that will make your work easier, faster and better and reduce the number of steps needed to accomplish tasks. They will also allow you to do things you just cannot do with the features built into Photoshop. Some of the plug-ins are collections of filters, whereas others are programs or utilities that you may find useful.

Please also take a look at the following collection of (free and commercial) Photoshop plug-ins from our friends from the web design community:

Fluid Mask

4

Cutting out is one of those painful tasks in Adobe Photoshop that people always approach with gritted teeth. It is very easy to cut out a section when the image has clearly defined lines. But on many occasions, you will come across images that prove to be just too challenging.

The fluid mask5 plug-in is helpful in such cases. It can isolate subjects in a quick and logical way and works similar to Photoshop’s own mask options, except that it has its own interface and offers much more control; for example, all brushes have their own settings. There are a lot of ways to use this plug-in, depending on the type of image you are working with.

Thanks for your time in putting this post together, quite comprehensive.
I do find though that people become too reliant on plug ins. And the majority of plug ins can be replicated, usually better, with a few simple steps, manually, in PS. Admittedly, a few are handy, like enlargement plug ins or noise reduction plug ins. The rest though just make people lazy and stop them playing around, thus learning new techniques.

    T.

    Thank you for that list.

While I agree a lot of these things can be done manually in photoshop, it does take time to figure out all the steps to get it all done. And yes, while an action can be created… as we all know, actions or droplets don’t always produce the same results with every single image we’re working with.

The advantage I see to these plugins is that they’re like an action, only you can go in and make custom adjustments right in the middle of the action… if that makes any sense whatsoever.

Not sure I want to spend the money some of these manufacturer’s are asking (thus, I’d likely stick to doing it all manually with photoshop). But it’s nice knowing those things are available.

I am also curious about the Site Grinder plugin. I’d love to hear if it’s amazing or a piece of junk.

Imagenomic’s Noiseware Professional is the best noise reduction software I’ve ever used. I’ve tried out quite a few, too. It needs to be included on this list. And I agree with others about the Nik tools – great stuff. And yes, any plugin is replicating something that can be done by hand, that’s true. Plugins may slow down the workflow for some, but for many of us, they are going to be the key to faster, better production.

Nik is top of the line, if you can afford the pro complete version. Viveza is great, and sounds like Cerveza, a perfect combination!

Thanks very much for taking the effort to put up such a list. Many of these I didn’t knew although I keep searching for Unique items for my work.People do criticise u but they forget that one could have kept knowledge to oneself & they would not have even known its existence instead of giving atleast a word of appreciation to those who take efforts without giving a thought to their own benefit. Thanks again

Good list but if you know Photoshop there is no need for plugins……….. this is just an easy way for amateurs to do what we graphic designers have been doing manually for years. I agree that for some of us that already know what we are doing these tools can speed up our daily tasks but if you’ve been doing this for as long as I have, its like riding a bike and it just flows off your stylis like magic. Its a shame that all this automation is taking away from the true art of graphic design. When it comes down to it, the people that are using the plugins probably forgot or don’t know how to use PHOTOSHOP in the first place.

I still like the feel of knowing I did it.

Plugins are good for quick dirty work. but anyone worth their salt is better off learning the
fine details of the tools already in Photoshop, because in the end. it will only make you a better designer. though even I have to admit I use virtual painter sometimes. :P~~

As a cake artist, I appreciate having the tools to make my work stand out more. I use about 5 different airbrushes when I have some painting to do. I will even use stencils occasionally to create effects. When I do, I almost always use a stencil that I made myself to create a unique design like no other. Does this make me any less of a cake artist? I don’t think so. I can see where some would consider this “cheating” but it’s just a base, IMO. I just use a stencil to get a rough outline, I’ll go back in with other colors and add depth to my work. I never use just one or two colors when I paint something. I firmly believe in multiple layers….no matter what your medium of choice is.

    To the point:

I’ve noticed quite a bit of negativity towards these newer generation graphic designers that use these tools and plugins but I think it’s all about you how you use them. Those of you “freehand” designers that feel these plugins are for lazy people, maybe some airbrush artist somewhere is hating on your style because you are painting on an LCD screen, meanwhile the oil painters are hating on the acrylic painters, who both are hating on the airbrush artist. I have a great idea… maybe we can all grab a handful of mud and paint a masterpiece on a cave wall somewhere? Get over yourselves.

As someone who really appreciates the long hard work that goes into editing (or even just slight retouching) of photos thanks for this list. It is a LOT easier for me to learn the “how to” by looking at the finished result – backward engineering springs to mind. I only need to know how something works so that I can achieve the results I desire. If a plug in gets the job I want done then thats ideal!

    Now for the rant…

You old skoolers “i like manually doing it all”/”I prefer knowing I figured it out all on my own and didn’t cheat” people make me sick! Boo hoo that you’re precious trade/job can now be done by anyone quick and easily with impressive results if not 100% as fantastic as yours! EVERY NEWER VERSION EDITING SOFTWARE SEEKS TO MAKE TASKS EASIER FOR you, yes, YOU! The fact you CAN DO IT MANUALLY means the program is pretty intuitive already, which YOU love!! Why did you bother to click on this webpage if you’re all manual!??!?!

Ditto the “GET OVER YOURSELVES” comment above!

    hi,
thank you for this great post. I would like to suggest one I really like & use it often : Knoll Light Factory,
wich create great lights & lights effects, completly customizable. The only ‘restriction’ is that it is not free, but quality is on “the rendez vous” !
