When we talk about a famous brand, the first thing that comes to mind is its logo. The logo is the most essential component of any personal brand and also the hardest part to execute. A logo must be appropriate, aesthetically pleasing and a reflection of the company’s credibility. Furthermore, a logotype should be synonymous with the company or product it represents and should penetrate people’s minds as a selling agent.

An amateurish logo design can more likely make your business fail for a number of reasons. A logo is of great importance in creating brand identity, and you should be very careful in selecting one for your business.

Today, we present some outstanding logo design tutorials to give you a head start when it comes time to creating an amazing logo for your own business.

Not sure if it’s mentioned in the tuts, but as a design blog, it should be your responsibility to lean people towards Illustrator rather than Photoshop. I remember being green and designing what I thought was a beautiful logo, only to be told that it needs to be a minimum of 300dpi to even consider printing, much less it being in RGB.

You should preface this article with logo 101, as a lot of these are “make it in Photoshop”.

    Just sayin’.

  28. 28
    Jen Walter
    May 1st, 2009 6:58 am

I agree with Greg and Jwo. These are great to be used as inspiration and even learning techniques to things you didn’t know.. but Logos should be done in Illustrator and certainly many of these tutorials aren’t, and many of these so called logos break every rule when it comes to logo design. Many aren’t scalable, & many won’t look as good when you remove the gradients and move to a 1 color application. Nice article for inspiration but seems a bit irresponsible not to bring all that up.

And here I was hoping to actually read about tips for good ‘logo design’ not ‘logo recreation’.

Perhaps an article on actual logo principles needs to be thrown around the internet before we forget all of the important principles, such as; print reproduction, legibility and scalability, one-colour reproduction, readable type etc. etc. etc.

    Just a thought.

My logo tutorial is featured in here and I’ll be the first to tell you, it’s not a great tutorial. I wrote it several years ago and it’s based in photoshop and was meant to just be a tutorial for photoshop owners only and how to hack one together..

What’s interesting is my tutorial seems to show up in most of these lists across different design blogs, and it’s only because it ranks high in google for logo tutorial related keywords.. it pretty much goes to show how the authors of these lists go about building them… But hey, I won’t complain from getting link love ;)

I’m not sure if all of the tutorials should titled “designing ____ logo” as they lean more towards simply crafting the logo rather than going through the whole design process, which in turn can become very misleading, especially coming from a design blog. Though the process-based walkthroughs are pretty insightful.

Normally I find the lists at Smashing to be, well, smashing!

This list, however, is pretty horrible.
    “How to apply this gradient”
“How to apply this green treatment”
“How to make your piss-poor logo look like a shiny marble”
“How to create swirlies a-la every-trendy-kid of 2007″

Nothing here gets to the core of true logo design: concept, black-value, legibility, reproducibility, simplicity, communication… etc..

It’s all effects. Anyone who bases their ‘design’ off of these tutorials is doing a disservice to their client and the industry. Sorry.

I have to agree with some of the others– not all these logos would pass the basic tests of a good all-round logo: scalable, readable in b&w, etc. You can take whole classes in logo and identity design, so I know it’s a large topic to cover. But I think a big part of these lists is determining what the logo needs are/were for each case– if it’s purely for web, than creating the logo in Photoshop is perfectly fine. I think that would be a great post topic here in the future.

Some great resources here in one place. There is a big difference though between designing something and building it, the MyNiteLife example is indeed about design but the Firefox example is all about production and really tells nothing about the design process. Both are useful, but “design” doesn’t encompass both skills.

As a production artist in the commercial print industry for almost 20 years the differences in skill sets have been made abundantly clear, I’ve earned a lot of money taking cool looking designs and reproducing them into digital files that are actually useful in production. At least 90% of the files we receive from designers are pure garbage from a production sense and have to be completely rebuilt. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) most designers have no clue their files are junk. There is an entire economy of fixing bad art.

That was some nice logo design tutorials! What I believe is that logo designing needs something more than just simple graphic design. Make sure it’s unique and appealing. And this is something that no tutorials can teach. Also try to use colors that are not too hard on the eyes.
