Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.

And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 60 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for May 2009?

Bob Dylan: “You’re a Liar”

"From Wikipedia: Dylan undertook a world tour of Australia and Europe in the spring of 1966. Each show was split into two parts. Dylan performed solo during the first half, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar and harmonica. In the second half, backed by the Hawks, he played high voltage electric music. This contrast provoked many fans, who jeered and slow handclapped. The tour culminated in a famously raucous confrontation between Dylan and his audience in England. At the climax of the concert, one fan, angry with Dylan’s electric sound, shouted: “Judas!” to which Dylan responded, “I don’t believe you … You’re a liar!” He then turned to the band and, just within earshot of the microphone, said “Play it f****** loud.” They then launched into the last song of the night: “Like a Rolling Stone”.

On May 24 the world celebrates the birthday of Rock’s greatest poet. Also in this month, Bob Dylan is releasing his 33rd studio album. This wallpaper is a tribute to him. " Designed by Rodrigo Esch from Brazil.

These are great wallpapers, except one thing. Links and logos like “Smashing Magazine” on them. These do spoil the overall image. Anyway, what’s the purpose? To make a user remember where did he get this stuff? Personally, I don’t understand why a user needs some advertisement on his desktop.
    P.S. I’d choose fresh cloud.

Lots of great ones here, thank you very much for keeping this going. For me, I like to have something that shows a calendar large enough to see from a few feet away…. and for easy recognition of what day’s what, having them laid out in 7-day rows is preferred. Also, I’ve learned that I’m used to seeing weeks begin on Sundays. Once I find something that meets this, I pick a design. For this month, my choice is Stamp Collection, but I also like A Precious Notion, Cityimage, Woody Allen and Showers Bring Flowers….

Thank you for accepting mine last month and this, especially as I am an “amateur” whose ideas often outpace her skills.
I like that there is always a wide variety of styles. I, for instance, am not interested in the phogographically based ones, but I respect the skill that goes into them. I think the nay sayers on here should remember this is a free contest with no prize except publication–open to anyone, and not based on technical virtuosity alone.
As to picking one–why? I change mine every week of the month, and use them as my screensaver in a slide show. I keep previous months without calendar in the queue.
Thank you again, (and to the person who liked mine last month in the comments!).

what’s up with the wild swings in quality? is there a review process that these go through? some are absolutely phenomenal and others look like they were done in 15 minutes by people who have never used photoshop before. no offense, i guess i’ve just come to expect a certain level of quality.

Some of these are fantastic! You guys really should use a spellchecker for some of the blurbs about the wallpapers, even if it’s fixing their authors’(Wallpaper creators) mistakes, not yours. The spelling in some of these hurts my head.

Not as impressed with the selection this month as I have been in the past. There are a few solid pieces of work, but not as many standouts as in previous months.

The Mother’s Day (the red lillies by Millicent B.) is a striking and beautiful image, but I’m actually surprised that you put something so polemic on this site as the whole right-to-choice vs. right-to-life argument. “Mothers choose life” is a tautology, but I don’t think that its too hard to see where the author’s loyalties lie…perhaps Smashing doesn’t want to get into that whole debate.

Just a suggestion- maybe someone should proof read these before they are put on your site. It’s a reflection on you- I see some spelling mistakes and the No lImits one has May 24 missing. I do like this site a lot though- so many to pick from and I love the calendars!! Thank you!!

‘Spring’ is my favorite. I love all the black with May spotlighted.

I am so glad I found this site, I love all the choices and beautiful designs. I normally change it out each week so that I can sample the different designs, but this month I’ve kept ‘Spring’ up until today. I just changed it to ‘Creative Spark’.

Thanks to all the designers who contribute for making my desktop lovely!!!
