Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: May 2009
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 60 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for May 2009?

Bob Dylan: “You’re a Liar”
"From Wikipedia: Dylan undertook a world tour of Australia and Europe in the spring of 1966. Each show was split into two parts. Dylan performed solo during the first half, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar and harmonica. In the second half, backed by the Hawks, he played high voltage electric music. This contrast provoked many fans, who jeered and slow handclapped. The tour culminated in a famously raucous confrontation between Dylan and his audience in England. At the climax of the concert, one fan, angry with Dylan’s electric sound, shouted: “Judas!” to which Dylan responded, “I don’t believe you … You’re a liar!” He then turned to the band and, just within earshot of the microphone, said “Play it f****** loud.” They then launched into the last song of the night: “Like a Rolling Stone”.
On May 24 the world celebrates the birthday of Rock’s greatest poet. Also in this month, Bob Dylan is releasing his 33rd studio album. This wallpaper is a tribute to him. " Designed by Rodrigo Esch from Brazil.

So many lovely images to choose from!! Plumpted for ‘Today isn’t just another yesterday’
Thanks SM - 10April 30th, 2009 3:22 am
I would remove half of them and leave just the decent ones. But as always, found one or two for myself – cheers!
- 11April 30th, 2009 3:23 am
Favourites are Melancholy and Mailbox! But some icons overlap with the calendar of Mailbox on my desktop so I’m using Melancholy. :D Awesome selection again!
- 12April 30th, 2009 3:25 am
Not even one wallpaper with a political theme about 1st of May? It is embarrassed forgeting that workers all around the world sacrificed their lifes for us… Shame, especially nowadays…
- 13April 30th, 2009 3:25 am
I like cute evilness – BTW, I think the author is Colombian (from south America) not Columbia / USA – so ‘/ USA’ shouldn’t be there…
Monster at the park is also cool…
- 14April 30th, 2009 3:27 am
Nice, always looking forward to the next month.
But now it’s the first time i don’t really find one i want to use :)
- 15April 30th, 2009 3:28 am
Nice collection but I can’t use some that I liked because the calendar is on top right or right side only and with vista it goes bad… The little applications at the right just hide it.
- 16April 30th, 2009 3:34 am
Astronaut is my favorite… Well done!
- 17April 30th, 2009 3:35 am

- 24April 30th, 2009 4:19 am
Another brilliant collection, couldn’t possibly pick a favourite – thanks guys!
- 25April 30th, 2009 4:20 am
Sorry for the link. ^_^
Really overwhelmed with these feature. Wee!
- 26April 30th, 2009 4:21 am
These are great wallpapers, except one thing. Links and logos like “Smashing Magazine” on them. These do spoil the overall image. Anyway, what’s the purpose? To make a user remember where did he get this stuff? Personally, I don’t understand why a user needs some advertisement on his desktop.
P.S. I’d choose fresh cloud. - 27April 30th, 2009 4:28 am
Thanks for listing mine (the Bounce one). Great work everyone!
- 28April 30th, 2009 4:35 am
i took look forward to them every month. i think this is the first time i couldn’t find one i wanted to use.

Woody ! Is my favorite
- 36April 30th, 2009 5:00 am
I liked a lot of the wallpapers. Actually it was really hard this month to decide. After all I choosed “Melancholy”.
- 37April 30th, 2009 5:05 am
Like some others have said, i’m surprised too by some wallpapers here: iI’d say the quality of half of them is very… let’s say amateur to be nice :)
I hope next month’s selection will be as the previous ones, maybe less images, but more quality ! - 38April 30th, 2009 5:10 am
Awesome collection. how can I submit a calendar design?
- 39April 30th, 2009 5:14 am
Some incredible wallpapers there, and yes I agree that the logo sometimes destroys the effect. I do wish there was at least one dual-monitor wallpaper in there though.
- 40April 30th, 2009 5:16 am
Listen to Groovy May is great and I just love how they did the numbers on the Hotdog one, nice!!!
- 41April 30th, 2009 5:30 am
Thanks SM! Glad to be featured. Keep Going!
- 42April 30th, 2009 5:32 am
nice Wallpaper, lovem them
- 43April 30th, 2009 5:44 am
Lots of great ones here, thank you very much for keeping this going. For me, I like to have something that shows a calendar large enough to see from a few feet away…. and for easy recognition of what day’s what, having them laid out in 7-day rows is preferred. Also, I’ve learned that I’m used to seeing weeks begin on Sundays. Once I find something that meets this, I pick a design. For this month, my choice is Stamp Collection, but I also like A Precious Notion, Cityimage, Woody Allen and Showers Bring Flowers….
- 44April 30th, 2009 5:47 am
always the best!
- 45April 30th, 2009 5:53 am
Melancholy, Mailbox and Monster in the Park were good. Nothing else spoke to me.
- 46April 30th, 2009 5:56 am
the hot dog i set as my wall paper instantly. it is just too hilarious.
the calendar with a pink background and may headphones stands out.
And the cast a clout, is great in it’s understated ness. - 47April 30th, 2009 6:09 am
So many wonderful designs to choose from!!!! Thought “Cute Evilness” was awesome — with actual usable space for my cluttered desktop. Kudos to all designers!!! Thanks!!
- 48April 30th, 2009 6:13 am
Thanks SM. Glad to be featured :)
- 49April 30th, 2009 6:46 am
Fantastic collection, though I can’t say I like all of these.
- 50April 30th, 2009 6:52 am
Thank you for accepting mine last month and this, especially as I am an “amateur” whose ideas often outpace her skills.
I like that there is always a wide variety of styles. I, for instance, am not interested in the phogographically based ones, but I respect the skill that goes into them. I think the nay sayers on here should remember this is a free contest with no prize except publication–open to anyone, and not based on technical virtuosity alone.
As to picking one–why? I change mine every week of the month, and use them as my screensaver in a slide show. I keep previous months without calendar in the queue.
Thank you again, (and to the person who liked mine last month in the comments!). - 51April 30th, 2009 6:53 am
And thank you to all the designers for sharing their work. I loved this month’s selections and downloaded more than I ever have before.
- 52April 30th, 2009 6:59 am
what’s up with the wild swings in quality? is there a review process that these go through? some are absolutely phenomenal and others look like they were done in 15 minutes by people who have never used photoshop before. no offense, i guess i’ve just come to expect a certain level of quality.
- 53April 30th, 2009 7:11 am
A superb collection.
- 54April 30th, 2009 7:25 am
Wow ! I got featured!

Don’t forget May 12th 2008. Thanks, Smashing Magazine.
- 60April 30th, 2009 8:36 am
These are all great – and each month they get better. You need to develop a wallpaper rotator so that a different one can come up each time I log on.
Thanks for all the inspiration!
- 61April 30th, 2009 8:41 am
My 2nd feature… next stop June ;)

- 67April 30th, 2009 10:34 am
I’m gonna go ahead and admit that none of these are very impressive. There are maybe 2 or 3 good designs. This is the worst backgroundup that Smashing’s posted in a while.

who has time to look at wallpaper? my desktop is always full.
- 81April 30th, 2009 6:09 pm
Ah, creativity is refreshing. Glad to see ours made it. Lots of great work here.
- 82April 30th, 2009 6:53 pm
Some of these are fantastic! You guys really should use a spellchecker for some of the blurbs about the wallpapers, even if it’s fixing their authors’(Wallpaper creators) mistakes, not yours. The spelling in some of these hurts my head.
- 83April 30th, 2009 7:00 pm
Great Collection. Thanks For Sharing.
- 84April 30th, 2009 7:16 pm

I love this collection so much. Thank’s a lot!!
- 86April 30th, 2009 7:43 pm
Very diverse selection, love the May Dreams one! What I want to know is why people feel the need to put down other people’s hard work? Why discourage all these artists by insulting their efforts?
- 87April 30th, 2009 8:16 pm
Hey Smashing,
Thanks again so much for keeping this up! I really look forward to it every month, and I tell everyone about your site and they use the wallpapers too now. I’m sorry but the smashing magazine logo just ruins these. Please use a transparent logo next time or better yet, don’t use one at all.
Thank god most of us know how to use Photoshop at least enough to remove a logo :/ - 107May 1st, 2009 6:11 am

Thanks for a few 2560×1600, hopefully more of the designers will offer this resolution in the future. I have two computers at 2560×1600 and one at 1920×1080 so nowadays fewer of these excellent designs can be used on my primary systems!
- 133May 2nd, 2009 4:28 pm
Faves: “Listen to Groovy May,” “Moonaway” and “Create Your Own God.” Plus two or three close seconds. Great batch, thanks guys! My computer smiles.

- 157May 4th, 2009 10:19 am
On second thoughts, there are indeed some nice ones! Thanks
- 158May 4th, 2009 2:25 pm
Not as impressed with the selection this month as I have been in the past. There are a few solid pieces of work, but not as many standouts as in previous months.
The Mother’s Day (the red lillies by Millicent B.) is a striking and beautiful image, but I’m actually surprised that you put something so polemic on this site as the whole right-to-choice vs. right-to-life argument. “Mothers choose life” is a tautology, but I don’t think that its too hard to see where the author’s loyalties lie…perhaps Smashing doesn’t want to get into that whole debate.
- 159May 4th, 2009 2:31 pm
cute evilness. great idea with the boxes!
- 160May 4th, 2009 2:56 pm
The “Don’t Forget” one has a very prominent error that I caught from the thumbnail. Says “Don’t Forgot”. :(

Just a suggestion- maybe someone should proof read these before they are put on your site. It’s a reflection on you- I see some spelling mistakes and the No lImits one has May 24 missing. I do like this site a lot though- so many to pick from and I love the calendars!! Thank you!!
