Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: July 2009

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.

And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 40 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for July 2009?

I don’t mean to be rude, but what is up with Sweet Child o’Mine? I can understand if people were to post an exeptional amazing baby-shot that has amazing technical qualities and a damn cute baby, sort of like Anne Geddes style, but this is just.. well, the baby is average, the technical qualities are not good, if you look at it full-size it isn’t even sharp. Why would I want somebody elses regular baby snapshot on my monitor? Is it just me who don’t get this submission?

I haven’t been crazy about the last few months but this month I have a few that I am having a hard time choosing between. Of course, there are some more feminine like one poster mentioned so maybe that’s it. There are questionable ones too but I find a few like that in every batch. I’m sorry but I just do not like the Smashing logo on some of these. It takes away the beauty of it, and it gets in the way of the design. Some of these are great but the logo just takes away from that.

Leap of Faith, for example, is complete with dark colors, but there in the corner is the orange logo.

That kind of goes with any other logos though. I don’t want to see text links inserted in wallpapers, and then put them on my desktop. I know the artist wants to get credit for their work, but I just don’t like it.

Sorry Guys Didn’t liked even a single wallpaper.

My wallpaper selection criteria is pretty simple.
I choose dark color wallpaper, with less effects on left side of wallpaper. This gives good readability for icons on my desktop.

Moreover as dark wallpaper are soothing to eyes.

Previously I have always liked few wallpaper from you guys but this none fits my criteria. Hoping for good wallpaper next time.

P.S. : I use windows with icons on left side of desktop.

    Hi Smashing Mag.

So nice that you kept this monthly feature – and even though the wallpapers also didn’t really match my taste this time, I support the contont because some people acctually spend some time on creating theese for free, an contributing to the community… I can also see, that others get great pleasure out of it. :)

I did still enjoy looking them through. :)

If you want highend-wallpapers: go out and buy one… This monthly feature gives people the chance to experiment with various topics and methods, so there can still be some trends in there to figure out if you’re looking hard at it, and if you have some imagination yourself… ;)

I’ve chosen Summer Dream because it was the one that triggered my imagination the most…

The selection is surely great, though some of calendars are simply unreadable or almost invisible. Nevertheless, why not to use a prog like Screen Calendar or Active Desktop Calendar or Screen Calendar to have calendar wallpaper for each month without downloading them again and again and without any nag logos?

I agree with The_Reveller: this set isn’t such hot stuff as it could be, plenty of bland submissions – but if you don’t think it’s up to par, make some great ones for everyone, show your skills, and get your name on people’s desktops with some exceptional work! :D I would like to do one for August or Sept, I’m not sure if I’ll have the time though – making something to distribute free doesn’t take the priority over clients and other important parts of life, but think of it as free advertising for your design ability! :D Can’t wait to see next month’s inspired collection!

Edit: Yes, I’m beginning to work on one so I’m not a complete hypocrite :P and if it slips to back-burner status sometime this month I’ll submit it for the month after that!

It’s been so long since I’ve seen something worthy in these selections. I mean, some are good, but nothing outstanding.

On a side note, no offense, but the person who sent a wallpaper of his/her baby, has nothing to do here. There’s no “smashing” value in that image and it’s not interesting for anybody besides the baby’s family.

Er, seriously? Most of them have regular sizes, too. I’m seeing lots with 1024×768, etc. And to the rest of the negative people, I question your desire to be so negative. JUST JULY – Very cool, however, i only noticed it now ( end of the month! ) but where it reads ” July ,,is the seventh month… with the length of 31 days”
Um, True, but the day counter indicates 30 days. I know its a SLIGHT mishap, but I think its these TINY details that make or break designs when dealing with graphics and the content of this website.
