Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: August 2009

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.

And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for August 2009?

Urban sprawls and social networking sites become massive nodes that contain the dreams and reflections of thousands of souls. Finding the layer of magick under the surface of things is the inspiration for this month’s wallpaper. I chose warm colors to represent the end of the summer and a time when our lives were defined by the changing of the seasons and the cycles of the sun and the moon." The last one, that is said to be “Designed by Sagar from Bangladesh” is based on an image created by Marek Okon, from Poland.
IMO, adding a calendar and a logo to a painting that is not yours (without changing it otherwise and without giving credit to the author) doesn’t count as “design” :/

(SM) You are absolutely right! The article was updated.

Outstanding month! So many good ones I’m setting a bunch to rotate!

I’m curious about whether the wordy ones are popular, as I never like them. Perhaps I’m more particular about my words than my images, or perhaps they just aren’t great words.

Also, as a Southern Hemispherian, those that relate to the season are never appropriate, but I don’t complain! Smashing job!

    two things:

    1st)
1280×1024 is a pretty common resolution (17″-19″ TFT) but is often missing :(

    2nd)
let there be more designs around real pictures (cars, nature, …). the fraction of artificial backgrounds is too large in my eyes. think of something like “dream car love”.

Perhaps a FEW days before the last day of the month to give us time to contemplate, judge, and decide on the following month’s submissions would make this better. (July has seemed to be a long month!)

I’d like to know more about the artists; short profile as a sidebar or below the submissions–even a link–to other work as well?

Otherwise, this is perfect! I’ve led others (particularly women, who love the flower wallpapers) to this place, and they keep asking when the next submissions appear… but you know how women never listen…. :-D

I think I have seen better months. I suggest you do all of the above:
    - Months should have categories (retro, movies, cartoon) and we would have winners per category and the overall winner.

As Jennifer (#9) said, “I am regular visitor of your site.” And like Jennifer, “My desktop is set up every month with your amazing and innovative calender wallpapers.” I ALWAYS have to make myself wait, every month, for the chance to check on the newest offerings. So eager to see them =)

I think the job as it is done now is great – I appreciate the resource, and the designers’ hard work.

    No changes needed, IMHO. THANKS

i like the randomness. the only change i’d suggest is that the calendar be given more consideration. that is , most of the time, it is too far to the right, so the 3 or 4 columns of desktop clutter on my mac cover it. so perhaps require various placements of the calender, as well as the no calendar option.

As someone mentioned before, the two wallpapers by Anil Omanwar-Drawing Innocence is from here:http://photofunia.com/effects/portrait/ and Unleashing Happiness is from here:http://www.photofunia.com/effects/pavement_drawing/. Anyone has a photo and uploads to this site could do them.
So I think the two wallpapers aren’t designed by Omanwar.

The original source of the Image of ‘Giving up the Demons’ has been lately said to be an artwork by Marek Okon, from Poland.

But I found the image at a non-English website(http://www.goodfon.ru/wallpaper/909/), deep inside the site and only with 127 downloads.

So, that was the ‘Source of Image’ on my part for that wallpaper and I gave them credit on my site.

I apologize to Marek Okoń , at the same time, strongly denying the allegation of plagiarism as I never took the image from his page.

Every month I wait for these to come out so that I can change my desktop wallpaper. Some of these are nice but others are not too impressive and the plagiarized ones just should not be posted at all also the ones done using websites like photofunia should not be here either!
The photofunia ones are done using these two links:
    Link 1 and Link 2

I think SM should set rules such that the work is the original…I dont think there should be a theme or style for each month because I personally would like to choose my own style or theme each month…But rating and award would be a great idea to give incentive to designers to make their best effort.

    as for my favorites:
vivid green, a lazy august afternoon, bright summers eve, and hum :)

I tend to like the more minimal desktops such as Hummm which is what I chose for August. Otherwise, I look for fun items such as Sleeping Moon, Busy Planet and Do the Dance. Great series, I follow it every month. It would be good to have some bookmark links for each individual desktop. So can email friends a specific link to this page with a bookmark tag that jumps to the relevant entry.

I do not think any theme or style, topic, rating or voting should be implemented here. Once you start “framing” creativity, you lose creativity in the purest sense. Just allow to be creative and see what you get.. Free expression is the best.
No voting because design, art, and any appreciation of creativity is very subjective. Let if flow!

I’m not too impressed with this month’s entries, sorry to say, but I do like August shines. Just a teeny little note about the Hadidas Ibis wallpaper: the Hadida is not actually native to South Africa, and it’s a BLOODY ANNOYING BIRD!!!

The artists who have so generously shared their exceptional talent to us mere mortals through Smashing Magazine all these years deserve an unending standing ovation! Thank you!

This month, I am most affected and haunted by “Giving up the Demons.” Powerful image.

This seems rather odd, but…this post never showed up in my feed reader.

The feed I am subscribed to is >> http://rss1.smashingmagazine.com/feed/ >> and I seem to be getting most of the posts, but I was on the page to send a link to a friend when I saw this one down the list and realized I’d never seen it before.

I did doublecheck my feed (I use google reader) and it’s definitely not in the list.

Awesome submissions this month, by the way. It was hard to choose, but the happy dancing monsters background is my favorite. Who CAN’T smile at them? Not me!

(Although the hamster one being so obviously based on the Bolt movie gave me a pause.)

Great variety this month. There were three that I liked the best:
    Hededah Ibis, Memories and Hummm

Of course, as always, I downloaded more so that I have plenty to choose from over the course of the month.

    Keep’em coming! =)

I think that these desktop wallpapers would be better if the main portion of the pictures and/or the calendar were not to close to the bottom of the pic. I run with my taskbar larger than the default and I have to bypass all entries that have ’something’ down at the bottom. I would suggest keeping the important parts higher than 3 times the height of the taskbar.

Um all okay except for the “UNLEASHING HAPPINESS” Since it wasn’t designed by Omanwar. This is actually a website that you upload a picture and it generates this for you. Can’t believe that it’s actually up there. If you don’t believe me check it out…

The third wallpaper “Vivid Green” is not ” Designed by Sagar from Bangladesh. its designer is iuneWind from Russia http://iunewind.deviantart.com/art/Green-Dawn-58523794, he just put calendar and SM logo on it.

I agree with @Enoo that adding a calendar and a logo to a painting that is not yours (without changing it otherwise and without giving credit to the author) doesn’t count as “design” :/

(SM) Thank you, the wallpaper was removed.

I love those wallpapers, and the variaty eachmonth, and i missed one month (August) life is just speeding up.

    So PLEASE,
Each month should have a specific style (pop art / minimalism etc.)
Each month should have a specific topic (fantasy / retro etc.)
    No – NO – NO
I would prefer to have a variay eachmonth, what elese should I do, when I do not find a style I like? Live w/o a calendar? I think the month is already a topic with the variation of time of the year.

KEEP it the way it is, it is PERFECT. and keep it on, please

An incentive for the designers would be great and a rating system might be o.k.?, no, better not. Design is so
I always take my time and skip through all 50 designs, so I can find sth I did not now I like. And I do not need to know what others like. That would influence in a way that should not be. This is about design and not about technique.
