Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: August 2009

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.

And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for August 2009?

Urbanshamanism

"You may think that magick doesn’t exist; that if it ever did, it abandoned us when we became an industrialized society. But I think that’s wrong. Magick is still here – it’s switched from analog to digital, it’s embedded in hypertext and video compression algorithms. It’s transferred into our homes along copper and fiber-optic ley lines. Urban sprawls and social networking sites become massive nodes that contain the dreams and reflections of thousands of souls. Finding the layer of magick under the surface of things is the inspiration for this month’s wallpaper. I chose warm colors to represent the end of the summer and a time when our lives were defined by the changing of the seasons and the cycles of the sun and the moon." The last one, that is said to be “Designed by Sagar from Bangladesh” is based on an image created by Marek Okon, from Poland.
IMO, adding a calendar and a logo to a painting that is not yours (without changing it otherwise and without giving credit to the author) doesn’t count as “design” :/

(SM) You are absolutely right! The article was updated.

Outstanding month! So many good ones I’m setting a bunch to rotate!

I’m curious about whether the wordy ones are popular, as I never like them. Perhaps I’m more particular about my words than my images, or perhaps they just aren’t great words.

Also, as a Southern Hemispherian, those that relate to the season are never appropriate, but I don’t complain! Smashing job!

    two things:

    1st)
1280×1024 is a pretty common resolution (17″-19″ TFT) but is often missing :(

    2nd)
let there be more designs around real pictures (cars, nature, …). the fraction of artificial backgrounds is too large in my eyes. think of something like “dream car love”.

I don’t like the idea of a theme for each month… I appreciate being able to choose a desktop calender to suit my own taste and mood. Voting seems like a good idea… there are quite a few sub-par designs here, IMO, and it would be great to sort them by votes.

on top of a picture doesn’t make it a calendar (eg. Paul Randal).
In fact, you have made it completely useless.
Let’s get some days of the week in there people.

@ Tim : Good call. Paul Randall’s calendar is a joke. Seriously, thanks for taking the 3 minutes it took to do that one. Oh, and last time I checked quotes usually END in quote marks as well.

    0
  53. 53

Perhaps a FEW days before the last day of the month to give us time to contemplate, judge, and decide on the following month’s submissions would make this better. (July has seemed to be a long month!)

I’d like to know more about the artists; short profile as a sidebar or below the submissions–even a link–to other work as well?

Otherwise, this is perfect! I’ve led others (particularly women, who love the flower wallpapers) to this place, and they keep asking when the next submissions appear… but you know how women never listen…. :-D

    0
  54. 54

    @ John, #50

I’m not familiar with how women never listen, I am however familiar with how guys like you are misogynist morons.

Thanks for featuring my Firefly wallpaper :] If anyone with an unsupported resolution would like a version, drop me an email.

That said, I think quality could be improved simply by not having as many as 50 wallpapers and being more selective. (Not that mine is cream of the crop, but there are some … less than stellar examples featured here.)

As Jennifer (#9) said, “I am regular visitor of your site.” And like Jennifer, “My desktop is set up every month with your amazing and innovative calender wallpapers.” I ALWAYS have to make myself wait, every month, for the chance to check on the newest offerings. So eager to see them =)

I think the job as it is done now is great – I appreciate the resource, and the designers’ hard work.

    No changes needed, IMHO. THANKS

    0
  72. 72

i like the randomness. the only change i’d suggest is that the calendar be given more consideration. that is , most of the time, it is too far to the right, so the 3 or 4 columns of desktop clutter on my mac cover it. so perhaps require various placements of the calender, as well as the no calendar option.

As someone mentioned before, the two wallpapers by Anil Omanwar-Drawing Innocence is from here:http://photofunia.com/effects/portrait/ and Unleashing Happiness is from here:http://www.photofunia.com/effects/pavement_drawing/. Anyone has a photo and uploads to this site could do them.
So I think the two wallpapers aren’t designed by Omanwar.

    0
  75. 75

And “Drawing Innocence” is messed up.

    Fun idea, but..
Very boring designs, incredible..one or two are fun, the rest are worse then stock photography.
    Sucking my inspiration away.
Anyway props for this website, I still think the content is good in generall.

I liked the July collection more.
Last month I hated, that I just have one desktop, this month no background really stood out for me.
I’m looking forward to next month!

@Tobi yes I did. But I thought I would enter it again for SM. Thanks for featuring me this month SM!

From now on, I will be submitting all my wallpapers to SM at the same time.

The original source of the Image of ‘Giving up the Demons’ has been lately said to be an artwork by Marek Okon, from Poland.

But I found the image at a non-English website(http://www.goodfon.ru/wallpaper/909/), deep inside the site and only with 127 downloads.

So, that was the ‘Source of Image’ on my part for that wallpaper and I gave them credit on my site.

I apologize to Marek Okoń , at the same time, strongly denying the allegation of plagiarism as I never took the image from his page.

I tend to prefer the designs with darker backgrounds.

I also never select a calendar with the dates aligned in a linear fashion. I need to be able to glance at the screen to see the dates.
