Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: August 2009
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for August 2009?

Urbanshamanism
"You may think that magick doesn’t exist; that if it ever did, it abandoned us when we became an industrialized society. But I think that’s wrong. Magick is still here – it’s switched from analog to digital, it’s embedded in hypertext and video compression algorithms. It’s transferred into our homes along copper and fiber-optic ley lines. Urban sprawls and social networking sites become massive nodes that contain the dreams and reflections of thousands of souls. Finding the layer of magick under the surface of things is the inspiration for this month’s wallpaper. I chose warm colors to represent the end of the summer and a time when our lives were defined by the changing of the seasons and the cycles of the sun and the moon." Designed by Arcane Palette Creative Design from USA.

August 1st, 2009 2:08 pmPlease don’t make everyone follow a specific style or theme. I have multiple backgrounds each month and like a variety. These backgrounds are so great each month, I really don’t know how you could improve them, but giving a award to the artists might encourage them.

August 2nd, 2009 2:14 amEvery month I wait for these to come out so that I can change my desktop wallpaper. Some of these are nice but others are not too impressive and the plagiarized ones just should not be posted at all also the ones done using websites like photofunia should not be here either!
The photofunia ones are done using these two links:
Link 1 and Link 2
I think SM should set rules such that the work is the original…I dont think there should be a theme or style for each month because I personally would like to choose my own style or theme each month…But rating and award would be a great idea to give incentive to designers to make their best effort.
as for my favorites:
vivid green, a lazy august afternoon, bright summers eve, and hum :)
Thank you all for your efforts :)

August 2nd, 2009 6:34 amI tend to like the more minimal desktops such as Hummm which is what I chose for August. Otherwise, I look for fun items such as Sleeping Moon, Busy Planet and Do the Dance. For Hummm,I like the fact that the stems of the flowers separate the dates as a regular calendar would. Very nice choice this month!

August 2nd, 2009 11:26 amI really look forward to the beginning of the month because I get to come here to choose a new desktop wallpaper. This month, I really loved the “Happy Friendship Month” until I realized that it was one day off and that the 31st is left off. I wish someone could correct it and resubmit it. Now, even though I’m disappointed at not being able to use my favorite, I chose “Peony Pink.”
I’ll look forward to next month!

August 3rd, 2009 12:13 amMemories uses the same coffee cup as May’s Melancholy wallpaper – to me, this months submissions are very poor, wrong calendars, the same picture of the girl, bolt hamster (how on earth this slipped through the net) and poor pictures with rubbish brushes thrown around the edges!! Shame on you smashing!!

August 3rd, 2009 12:23 amHi,
Great series, I follow it every month. It would be good to have some bookmark links for each individual desktop. So can email friends a specific link to this page with a bookmark tag that jumps to the relevant entry.
That way I can email a friend one I think they might like but they can also see the others in case they prefer another.
Thanks,
Andy

August 3rd, 2009 6:41 amIn the Butterfly Effect one it should say “affect”, not “effect”, they are completely different words with different meanings. (In the quote within the wallpaper, not the title).

August 3rd, 2009 9:36 amI just found you and I like this August collection – even the ones made at photofunia.com are nice but I don’t know if they should be allowed.
I prefer a dark background and there are some good ones here.
Thanks.

August 3rd, 2009 10:34 amto improve the quality of the page you should publish wallpaper for multiple screens… at least for 2 screens.
T.y. every month i pass around to get a new wallpaper.

August 3rd, 2009 4:52 pmI do not think any theme or style, topic, rating or voting should be implemented here. Once you start “framing” creativity, you lose creativity in the purest sense. Just allow to be creative and see what you get.. Free expression is the best.
No voting because design, art, and any appreciation of creativity is very subjective. Let if flow!

August 6th, 2009 10:16 amI’m not too impressed with this month’s entries, sorry to say, but I do like August shines. Just a teeny little note about the Hadidas Ibis wallpaper: the Hadida is not actually native to South Africa, and it’s a BLOODY ANNOYING BIRD!!!

August 7th, 2009 12:27 am@ Aurora… It doesnt say the hadedah is native to South Africa, it says I am!

August 7th, 2009 2:39 amThe artists who have so generously shared their exceptional talent to us mere mortals through Smashing Magazine all these years deserve an unending standing ovation! Thank you!
This month, I am most affected and haunted by “Giving up the Demons.” Powerful image.

August 7th, 2009 3:07 amAny possibility if getting these each month in a window 7 rotating desktop theme?

August 7th, 2009 5:37 amThis seems rather odd, but…this post never showed up in my feed reader.
The feed I am subscribed to is >> http://rss1.smashingmagazine.com/feed/ >> and I seem to be getting most of the posts, but I was on the page to send a link to a friend when I saw this one down the list and realized I’d never seen it before.
I did doublecheck my feed (I use google reader) and it’s definitely not in the list.
Awesome submissions this month, by the way. It was hard to choose, but the happy dancing monsters background is my favorite. Who CAN’T smile at them? Not me!
(Although the hamster one being so obviously based on the Bolt movie gave me a pause.)

The zebra was my favorite, and I loved the firefly tribute.

August 8th, 2009 4:33 pmI think that these desktop wallpapers would be better if the main portion of the pictures and/or the calendar were not to close to the bottom of the pic. I run with my taskbar larger than the default and I have to bypass all entries that have ‘something’ down at the bottom. I would suggest keeping the important parts higher than 3 times the height of the taskbar.
Thincho
August 8th, 2009 9:40 pmBrigado for “do the dance”… :)

August 13th, 2009 2:53 amThere are already many monitors with larger resolution than 1600…., it would be nice to have more wallpapers with a resolution above 2000… .

August 13th, 2009 7:54 pmI, too, like the variety, and enjoy learning new things about each month, in such a creative way. Of course, I always like some better than others, but that’s why you allow so many choices, right?
