What about shipping costs?

We tried to do our best to keep the costs for the book as well as shipping costs as low as possible. Shipping costs are simple (per book):

  • United States and Germany – free shipping + (optional) social shipping
  • Europe (except Germany) – 3,50 € Ground mail, 5 € Air mail
  • Rest of the world – 5 USD Ground mail, 10 USD Air mail

Yes, it’s that simple. We pay parts of the shipping costs by ourselves to make it possible for everybody worldwide to purchase the book – nevermind where he or she comes from. No hidden costs, no tricky calculations.

What will you get for your money?

The book has 300 pages in all, full of practical and useful knowledge for designers and Web developers. It contains 10 chapters and is printed in full color. The book is a paperback and is 8.27 × 5.5 inches (21 × 14 cm). The book contains colorful illustrations, created by Russian designers from SoftFacade (Anton Zykin, Dmitry Tsozik, Anna Myagkova).

The book is available exclusively from Smashing Magazine and nowhere else. This first and only Smashing Book looks at Web design rules of thumb, color theory, usability guidelines, user interface design, best coding and optimization practices, as well as typography, marketing, branding and exclusive insights from top designers across the globe.

It was written by Jacob Gube (SixRevisions), Dmitry Fadeev (UsabilityPost), Chris Spooner (Spoongraphics), Darius A Monsef IV (COLOURlovers.com), Alessandro Cattaneo (with co-editing by Jon Tan), Steven Snell (VandelayDesign), David Leggett (UXBooth), Andrew Maier (UXBooth), Kayla Knight (regular writer on SM), Yves Peters (Typographica.org), René Schmidt (system administrator of our servers) and the Smashing Magazine editorial team, Vitaly Friedman and Sven Lennartz.

The Smashing Book contains the following chapters:

Chapter1 in The Smashing Book: Pre-Order Now And Save 20%

The Art And Science Of CSS Layouts

In modern Web design, developing a layout is a craft that requires patience, precision and solid knowledge of CSS. While design elements create flow and hierarchy in the design, Web layouts build up a skeleton of the website, providing a space and structure where design elements can breathe and serve their purpose. However, laying out a page is often a tricky and time-consuming matter that can be undermined by numerous browser inconsistencies and trade-offs between various types of layouts.

There are some practical guidelines to help you approach this issue in a manageable and effective way. This article throws light on various kinds of layouts, discussing their advantages and disadvantages and suggesting situations in which each would work best. It also talks about techniques and related issues that will help you gain a better understanding of CSS layouts in general.

User Interface Design In Modern Applications

User interface design isn’t just about buttons and menus. It’s about the interaction between the user and the application or device, and in many cases about the interaction between multiple users through that device. This means that user interface design isn’t about how a product looks, but about how it works. It’s not just about arranging buttons and picking colors, but about choosing the right tools for the job. Does a particular interface even need buttons? If so, what do they need to do? What do you need to provide for the user to figure out how your application works and accomplish what they want with ease?

Typo in The Smashing Book: Pre-Order Now And Save 20%

Web Typography: Rules, Guidelines And Common Mistakes

Typography covers a wide range of topics and applications, even wider now with the Web and the digitization of information. Typography is not just about choosing a nice font. It is a complex meta language that brings value to communication, that increases the readability and legibility of content, giving tone to a brand and corporate image, helping to sell products and making information better understood by the audience. However, the poor application of a few common rules of typography is enough to make readers turn away.

Usability Principles For Modern Websites

We don’t know a single Web designer who wouldn’t want an outsider’s opinion of their website. Bonus points if you find a designer willing to give you feedback. Keep in mind, though, that a designer’s opinion isn’t your user’s opinion. To identify with our users, we must focus on much more than the outward appearance of our websites, as difficult as that is to do. To complicate matters, modern websites quickly become huge multi-faceted structures. Competing websites often offer similar functionality, but one will win out because it provides a superior user experience. This is where the Web is headed, a sort of evolution of website design.

Color in The Smashing Book: Pre-Order Now And Save 20%

The Guide to Fantastic Color Usage In Web Design and Usability

Considering the cultural implications of the colors on your website is important, especially if you expect international traffic. Green, for instance, a popular color, is taken in Western society to mean environmental consciousness. In China, a green hat could imply that a man’s wife is cheating on him. The color is sacred in the Islamic world, and it has significance in Catholicism. In some African countries, green represents the natural richness of Africa. It has also been associated with money, jealousy, growth, sickness, inexperience, evil, fertility, hope, youth and death. This is just one example of the cultural and psychological implications that color can have for your website’s audience.

Performance Optimization For Websites

Slow and unresponsive websites are annoying. And if your website is annoying, your visitors are unlikely to buy goods or contact you, and you will lose money. Hence, optimizing your website to provide a good user experience is important. Yahoo’s Firefox plug-in YSlow provides tips on how to make websites more responsive. We will not settle for YSlow’s tips alone, though, but take two further steps by optimizing MySQL and PHP as well.

In this chapter, we get technical. You will require root-level access to your server machine. If you are in a shared-hosting environment, you may not have this level of access. But the section will still be useful to you because you can check if your Web host’s machine meets your requirements, and if it does not, you will know what to demand from your host.

Design To Sell: Increasing Conversion Rates

Most websites are not works of art or things made to be appreciated solely for their beauty or expression. Websites are functional interfaces that serve a specific purpose. If you run an online store, the purpose of your website is to sell goods. If you run a Web application, your website is there to get people to sign up. Whatever industry you operate in and whatever type of business, organization or community you run, you want your website to perform by getting those sales, sign-ups, subscribers or clicks.

“Conversion” is an online marketing term that describes an instance of a visitor to your website performing an action that you deem to be desirable. The main question is, how do you turn a new visitor to your website into a loyal customer? To answer this, we’ll look at what it takes to sell effectively.

Brand in The Smashing Book: Pre-Order Now And Save 20%

How To Turn A Site Into A Remarkable Brand

The term “remarkable” means being worthy of notice or attention or, in the context of Web development, naturally persuading the viewer to mention or recommend a website to a friend. Developing a remarkable brand for your website means that people will likely give credit or refer to your website voluntarily, which is a big bonus when you are starting to build and develop your website.

Any niche or industry has hundreds or thousands of websites all based on the same topic, but from the crowd always emerges a bunch of websites that re-appear time and again. These websites are often mentioned in conversation and cited in sources of information or are the homes of highly sought after products. Given their high profiles, they can all be classified as remarkable, but how did they manage to build this great reputation?

Learning From Experts: Interviews And Insights

Many of the most successful and well-recognized designers are willing and eager to provide guidance to others who want to improve their own skills. We posed a series of questions to leading designers and developers in an effort to get some answers to common questions. The participants bring a great deal of diversity in skills and expertise, and all have valuable insight that can help those looking to grow.

The Smashing Story

How did Smashing Magazine come into existence? How do we work, and what happens behind the scenes? What is our secret recipe for success? Our readers are asking, and Smashing Magazine is answering.

The Smashing Magazine story is not the classic story of two guys coming up with a great idea in the right place at the right time. It is a story of dedication, patience and hard work… truly hard work. Perhaps the most unusual thing about Smashing Magazine’s birth is that we never actually sat down together to discuss the whole thing. We never threw up a whiteboard and brainstormed on a groundbreaking concept for a successful magazine with a solid marketing model. In fact, Smashing Magazine is the result of a random experiment, initiated by two like-minded Web workers with shared passion and knowledge, as well as valuable experience (Sven) and energetic motivation (Vitaly).

Hello, I ordered this at the end of August and expected it to be here at the end of Sept and watched all these delays.

However, I still anticipate a great book but I was really hoping either a PDF version would have been sent out to us who pre-ordered or something extra for us who were loyal enough to pay early… way early.

    Just my two cents…

(SM) Please stay tuned – we’ll have a nice surprise in the second newsletter very soon!

Where are the *^$# books? I ordered in late August but now I’m wondering if you are having to make the paper… Seriously though, can we Pre-orderers get notified more often? I have had one notification and that date has already been and gone.

Still looking forward to the book however.

(SM) You pre-ordered the book, thank you for that. We think the best thing is to send out e-mails when there are some news. Because the books are being shipped at the moment, there is really nothing new we can tell you. We just need to wait. We know that is not easy and we are truly sorry about it, but what else can we do?

    Hello,

I just checked the status of my order, which was placed mid-August, through my account that I created. The status column says it is completed and I assure you that I have not received any book yet. Also reading this post I realized that it hasn’t even been published yet

“Although The Smashing Book won’t be published until late September October November, you can secure your copy today.”

Could you guys please inform us when it will be shipped and provide a e-mail for us to contact you? I couldn’t even find a e-mail address for support under my account. Could you also change the status from completed to something like “awaiting shipping”? The “completed” implies that the whole order was completed when actuality it is far from it.

The e-mail associated with this post is also associated with my order if you would like to look more into this. I hate to have to contact you through a comment through a post so really you guys need to provide a support e-mail address under my account.

Thanks just concerned about my order

I’m deeply disappointed about the delays.

For a site that publishes such good quality articles, I would have thought they had (access to) the skills required to lay out a book without problems like this. Did they not research production and delivery timescales before starting this project?

I paid for my book the first week it was announced, but still I have nothing to show for it, and the intended recipient did get it for their birthday; at this rate they will be lucky to receive it for Christmas!!!

If it doesn’t ship in November I will be requesting my money back!

I too, like many others on here, ordered this book awhile ago and am beginning to fear that we are never going to see anything for our money.

While I do realize that there are often problems in the print production phase which can cause delays to publication, a two-month delay seems a little extreme. I know you keep referring us all to the newsletter link at the top of the page, but that was from September and showing us photos of the book being printed in September while telling us that we are going to have to to wait until the end of November for our copies, is just asking for upset people.

Perhaps if you gave a bit better of an explanation behind the delay (ie what does shipping delays mean, because you haven’t shipped them to us yet, right?) then people may not be quite so annoyed.

All I know is that I, like MIssy, will be asking for my money back if the delay goes beyond the end of November!

The situation may be out of your control, but that means you didn’t do due diligence and choose good service providers on this. I have not bought this book, was planning on it, but not at the moment. I paid my money in good faith and accepted the initial delay. But as someone else wrote here they obviously did not get their ducks in a row before publicising it.

I think Smashing owe us a damned good explanation for the delays. And not some newsletter or site announcement – a personally addressed email or letter to every individual who has paid for something they’ve not received.

One thing’s for sure, I won’t be buying anything from them again unless it’s already in the bookstores and I get what I pay for immediately.

The book is being sold as a pre-order, and there’s a 20% discount, so I can’t really complain much that the book isn’t finished being printed/ready for delivery. I am looking forward to the book, and any golden nuggets of info that can help expand my knowledge of web development.

@Missy (#38): You’re right, I do complain a lot when my new Mac, car or must-have gadget is delayed. But those items are already available/build/in store/on-the-way and weren’t on pre-sale while still in development. So please try to see it from their view; they build a complete new book with help help of the community (us) and made the pre-sale available while the book wasn’t completed and everybody knew that.

About the delays; I’m sorry to hear it (I ordered the book like everybody else) but as long as SM can give the quality as they always have given I don’t complain. An more detailed explanation could be helpful, but everybody who can think by himself/herself can think of all the reasons that can cause a delay (especially these times).

Thank you, Johan. You beat me to the punch.

Working for a marketing/publishing company, I know what it’s like trying to get anything, let alone a book finalized, printed and distributed. These guys were nice enough to provide its readers with a discount. Whether we get it on time or late, we still win. It certainly beats paying the retail price when it hits the shelves… but if it’s worth your hasty convenience…

It’s a popular item (to say the least) among the community; the pre-orders must be huge, not to mention estimating the inventory needed for the release date.

So shipping is probably accommodating for all of this. Then there is less chance of an inventory shortage, or people receiving their copy much later. You don’t want to be receiving it, when AJAX 2.0 is the new buzzword. :-)

Think of it this way, November will be cold and snowy. Which gives you more time to be indoors to read it for the 3rd or 4th time. :-)

I work in a digital printing company and sure there can be delays but thats usually days not months! I got the feeling that the printing company you went ahead with is not up to the task for so many orders. We have a Xerox Igen3 that can print up to 1600 full color SRA3 two sided an hour. You can have 2 books on a SRA3. Thats almost 5 books per hour. Factor in glueing and finishing is like 100 books per hour. I don’t wanna blame you guys or the company thats making the books. It’s the not knowing thats irritating. Btw the printer in the newsletters the guy is using. We have one too. We only use it to print posters not books not even digital proof. Still have good hopes for receiving the book this year. Keep up the great work on the website. Love your articles.

When you read the newsletter you see some action pics from the digital proof they are printing. We have the same printer. But we only use it for posters and such. Basically for larger things. If the customer wants a digital proof of a book we’ll print it on the Igen3 on for example A4 paper(21 cm*29.7 cm). You don’t need to cut it with a scissor like the guy is doing on the pics. After its printed you take it out of the stacker glue the cover on it. Then take an industrial cutting machine and cut it to the right format the customer wants. Done!

I’m just venting my thoughts a little thats all. We print books like this for major companies all the time and if it takes months like this book we would be out of business by now. I and a lot of others can’t cancel the preorder so we’ll get the book someday i hope.

When i shop online I test webshops by ordering one item or ask a question and see how long they take to respond or ship an item. When it’s like this book I would never shop there again. You have to keep the customers happy. Either by shipping the item or have a transparent communications with the customers.

    For example:
“Update (18/10/2009): Again, we sincerely apologize for the delay and we promise that we will ship your book to you as soon as possible! Thank you for your patience and trust – we will do our best to meet your expectations!”

What kind of a message is this? It says absolutely nothing. It’s like reading something from a pr firm. Off course we have patience because we have nowhere to go since we already paid and can’t cancel!
I can understand that there are problems but communicate them to us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I apologize if I’m being to hard because I know there are people at Smashing magazine who deliver great work and it shows in the articles on the website.

(SM) Sorry for not being clear enough. In the meantime, you should have received another newsletter containing more detailed information.

I think I am more annoyed at the fact that I have given them money and then received no helpful information, and a 2 month delay.

Personally I have always felt that transparency is the best policy, if they openly gave an update every week during the delay telling us the woes they are getting into and the work they are doing to overcome it I would find it a much more enjoyable delay experience. A nice insight in to what companies go through to get their first book published, might even make a nice tutorial article.

  79. 831

I don’t know if there is enough going on for a weekly update, because i can imagine there is a lot of waiting en testing involved in the proces of book printing but i agree it would be great if they let us know a bit more about the books progress.

That article about what companies go through to get their first book published is a great idea. I hope SM picks this up.

btw i must admit i am a bit annoyed about the fact that they delay the release date everytime youre about to expect it in your mailbox but i stay with my opinion that thats not a reason to go and wright angry comments.

“Come on! You all act like addicts who desperately need there fix. So the book comes out a bit later, so what! You won’t lose anything with the book coming out in november do you?”

Its not a bit late. A bit late is like a month or so. Any longer and as a customer you start to worry. Plus the shop we all ordered this book from does not respond to any of his customers. So you got multiple delays and no direct communications. Now what do we do? If for a bold move they would close the site and take our money. Then what? If 1000 people ordered a book thats a lot of money. People get scammed on the internet every day. I love the website and it has been a great resource for me and i believe a lot of webdesigners. But the cold reality is that i don’t know the people behind smashing personally. The only way to respond is through here!

    @tom foster
“I think I am more annoyed at the fact that I have given them money and then received no helpful information, and a 2 month delay.”

exactly how I feel! I could of let my voice heard a lot sooner but I choose to remain calm and wait it out. You know what made me pissy? I had to check the website to see they made a 18/10/09 news update. Not even a email update to someone who had ordered the book. How hard can it be to send a newsletter for those who ordered the book?

    @hillie

“I don’t know if there is enough going on for a weekly update, because i can imagine there is a lot of waiting en testing involved in the proces of book printing but i agree it would be great if they let us know a bit more about the books progress.”

“btw i must admit i am a bit annoyed about the fact that they delay the release date everytime youre about to expect it in your mailbox but i stay with my opinion that thats not a reason to go and wright angry comments. ”

I know all about deadlines that are too ambitious. We all make mistakes. But you don’t miss deadlines by months. I agree that there is a lot of testing but thats not months. If the book is done it’s all up to the printing company. If the printing company has a good paper supply company you get samples of the paper you wanna use. hell the printing company themselves has a good stock to choose from for the cover and the inside of the book. the printing company will make make three of four example books so the customer can choose the kind of paper they want. Now all they have to do is print, glue and finish(cutting) the book.

Off course we are a bit upset. Not angry. Angry is when you start yelling, flaming and proclaim physical harm to another person. We are all trying on a calming way get a response from the person(s) who are responsible for the book.

I haven’t said this but I paid €24(€17.75 without) with postage for this book. I find that cheap. Actually too cheap. They are going too use coated paper for the inside. Thats more expensive then for instance offset paper. Probably a decent 250-350 gr coated paper for the cover. Off course the glueing and finishing. The margin on this book must be thin.

If I’d knew that it will take this long to get the book I would have opened a dispute in PayPal’s resolution center (just in case), but the deadline for that is 45 days i think :S

And i still can’t understand what we (who preordered the book) get different than the regular buyers? I know that it’s not discount since the pre-ordering process was supposed to be ended in September when we should have received our books, but pre-ordering is still active, even though SM have troubles delivering those already ordered books. I’m really confused regarding this matter… I certainly wouldn’t ordered it on 6th of August, I would rather wait till November if I’d knew that the pre-order deadline is few months after I was supposed to get the book.

Your Smashing Book has been printed! It is currently en route to our shipment facility, where it will arrive in mid-November. Because not much can go wrong now — unless the ship gets seized by pirates :) — we expect no further delays and can finally announce a shipping date:

    Monday, 23 November 2009

Again, we are very sorry for the delays. We would like to offer you a little appetizer as you wait just a little bit longer: the first chapter of the Smashing Book. You can download it as a PDF:

Chapter 1: User Interface Design in Modern Web Applications

We decided to focus on continuing to deliver great content rather than devise an elaborate content protection scheme. So, the file is not protected. This download is meant as a goodie for people like you who have put their trust in us. Please feel free to spread the link to the file if you want to.

Many people have asked for the reasons behind the delays in production. For one, our schedule was just a bit too optimistic. We didn’t allow enough time for the usual delays that happen with every project, like missed deadlines by third parties. We also ran into some layout problems, because the book turned out to be a bit longer than originally planned. So we decided not to rush things, and we made sure that even with the additional pages, your Smashing Book would look marvellous. The second major delay was caused by the unexpectedly huge demand. While we were, of course, very happy about everyone’s interest in the Smashing Book, the print shop needed an additional two weeks for the increased number of orders.

Another thing that confused some people (rightfully so) was the status of their order, which they could see if they registered for an account at our store. This information is currently a bit misleading. We are in the process of printing the invoices so that we can ship the book as soon as it arrives at our shipment facility. The problem is that this process flags the book as having already shipped, even though it hasn’t. You will receive another newsletter once your Smashing Book has actually shipped.

Thanks again for your support, trust and patience. This project would not have been possible without them!

I CANNOT WAIT to put my hands on this book! Very nice iniciative. The market (& consumers) are lacking for a trust-worthy book for contemporary references and guides.

I only have one doubt: are the articles a compilation of those posted on the website? Or they were specially written for the book?

    tks and congrats!

Normally how long does it take in order to deliver from your place to VietNam in case of using ground mail and in case of air mail?
    Reply ASAP OK
    Thanks

(SM) Our postal provider didn’t give us delivery times to Vietnam, sorry. I would guess that it takes several days via air mail and weeks via ground mail. The books get shipped from Germany, so if you have any experience receiving mail from Europe, please share with us.

Looks like a promising book. BUT,, with all the delays, I’m withholding my pre-older to a later date.. Lucky I’ve read through some of the comments and learnt the problem. Great content, but getting everything together to hard copy and make the delivery is another thing. This proves one thing, SM is only good at what they do best, online/digital content.

(SM) Be assured, our printed content will be of equally high quality. :) It’s true that we have to work on our delivery times, though…

Life doesn’t always play out as we’d like. As we mentioned in our last newsletter, the Smashing Book has already been printed, packaged and addressed, and only needs to reach our warehouse so that we can send it out immediately. Unfortunately, we have to rely on third parties to get it here (because we don’t happen to own our very own container ship). In this case, we have been let down.

Much to our dismay and without prior warning, our shipping company decided to temporarily shut down its cargo ship midway, because it thought it was underemployed (perhaps the ship joined the “ghost fleet” near Singapore). The additional delay was caused by having to transfer the books to another ship to continue delivery.

Despite our best intentions, some deadlines cannot be met. The books will not be shipped as announced on November 23rd, but on December 5th.

Thanks again for your patience, trust and support. We’ll do our best to make it up to you, folks.

Got this just now, what is that? Please pay my money back, I don’t need your book, enough is enough, if you can’t publish a book then don’t do it

I just got the latest update about yet another delay (shipping date Dec. 5). It was kind of ironic reading the e-mail under your logo that has the slogan “We smash you with the information that will make your life easier. Really.”

Anyways, I am trying to really see it from your point of view and be understanding, but this is getting annoying. I realize you’re not to blame (for the most part). However, I would highly recommend you think of some way to compensate for the extreme delay. It could be something like adding a small usb drive, or even a pen to the order. Or if you don’t want to deal with anyone else anymore – provide on your website a package of tools or resources that might be useful for people in the field and that is not available to regular users.

Think of something or you’re going to lose consumer interest and trust dramatically. Really.

This is totally a D.I.S.A.S.T.E.R. First because we don’t care if your shipping company got kidnapped by Johnny Dep in Somalia’s coast or decided to sell fish in Singapore instead of shipping our book.

Or is it something common for you? Are those companies advertising on your side bar delaying your payments as you do with our books (yes! we paid them!)? (Oh sorry! our developers got sick in {exotic country} and we will pay you not november 23 but december the 5th!!) DO you afford that? Do you feel comfortable?

I think that at least you would need to have a little decency and give money back to all of us who bought your book and still ship it.- Not a good business? Well, you should have thought about it when you decided to create a book – otherwise, keep working online!

Sad to say that I think the contents will be good and from thinking I would have a great book, Im starting to think (as many others for sure), that I will get something for what I’ll say ” oh yeah, the book that took loooong to arrive and…. is just another book on the list…

Daniel, I completely understand your point of view and you are absolutely right. It is indeed a disaster. We have never expected it to go so badly. You see, the problem is that all these delays are really not so much our fault as these are problems caused by third-party companies. Indeed, we did have a delay with the book layout and printing, but it was only a delay of 3 weeks.

The rest was caused by the printing house and delivery service. It is obvious that we waited until the book is finished before starting the pre-order-phase. However, after that things have gone terribly wrong. We couldn’t anticipate these problems because they came up unexpectedly. You need to see this issue from our point of view as well, Daniel.

Being one of the many people who pre-ordered the Smashing Book, this is disappointing news. I do know that certain things are out of your control but one thing that you *can* control is making your devoted fans happy under these circumstances.

Perhaps you would be so kind as to release another chapter or two of the book in PDF format while we wait. Then it will only take us a fraction of the time to read the book once it arrives. If it ever does!

People considering to buy this book:

If you want to get it in something like 4 months, outdated, “but with 2 new chapters on how to go from Singapore to Germany”…. just go get it. It has 25% OFF.

ANNOYING AND A TOTAL DISASTER….. Any good image of Smashing Magazine is totally faded out. Starting to read other blogs instead of this one

Daniel, please notice that the book will not be updated as it covers general universal design, usability and marketing principles. If you remember, as we started it out as a community project, most readers wanted it to be timeless, which is why we did it just like that.

We are aware that these permanent delays did damage our image. And we are terribly unhappy about that. It’s a pity that you started reading other blogs – we really work hard to deliver the best high quality content to you. :(((

It’s a shame, I’m not complaining because I need the book right now, it’s a matter of principle. You are a brand, it’s not fare treat the people who trust you and follow you every day like this, you are losing reliability.

We don’t care if you have problems, everybody has, it’s just very bad management, people get fired for that reason.

I’m happy for the 30 days money back guarantee, I will just take a look at the book, and if it’s not stunning I will send it back to you.

You are absolutely right, Carlo – no question about that. And we are absolutely aware of the fact that we are losing reliability. But if you depend on other parties, bad things can happen sometimes. What can we really do if the book is stuck in Singapore and the shipping company doesn’t ship it to Europe because of “financial crisis”? What do you expect us to do? Loan a ship and move it to Europe by ourselves?

It would be a pity if you will return a book – we really worked very hard to make its content as useful and relevant as it could be. We’ve spent a lot of time and resources to make it a truly smashing book, but we couldn’t anticipate all these delivery problems; mostly, because they weren’t caused by us.

We do know one thing, though: in the future we’ll certainly be much more cautious when choosing the company to print and deliver our books.

Just got the email about the FURTHER delays. What the hell guys! You’re a fair way through utterly destroying the trust that you’ve built up with your users for so long.

If we hadn’t paid, i could understand but we’re paying customers and I assume that there are thousands of us! That’s alot of money, use it!

What is all this complaining and bickering? Want partial refund? Extra hardware freebies? Complete refund AND the book?

Stop it, for crying out loud.

I really don’t get it. Those of you that don’t want the book because of the wait, then you didn’t want/need the book enough in the first place and should’ve thought better before preordering. The articles and subjects chosen don’t become outdated in 4 months, you’re getting the same value, just later. AND IT WILL STILL BE USEFUL.

OK, perhaps I’m not being fair to some of you. Perhaps some of you just lost A LOT of money by waiting for this book to arrive and because they signed some sort of perfect timing CONTRACT you have the right to ask all that nonsense.

Agreed. Yes, delays are annoying, but thats just how it is. GET OVER IT! And stop WHINING! If you can’t break it down to your boss that the shipping has been delayed then you have much bigger problems than having to wait a few months for it.

Not to mention that your apology was cute the first 2 times but come on guys! are you realizing that we won’t be trusting you the next time you come out with a great book and you won’t be getting this many orders? “Fool me once, shame on you…Fool me twice, shame on me….Fool me three times…I CANCEL!”

I do not want to hear the reasons why the book hasn’t shipped yet. The fact that you keep saying the same thing over and over is beyond the point now. You know I am dissatisfied…I told you that, so do not tell me one more time why the delays have been happening. I do not want to hear any more excuses or reasons, but rather want someone to point me to the way to cancel my order. I have already made up my mind, and do not want this book anymore. Don’t give me anymore crap about the delays, but please tell me how to cancel.

        -Still dissatisfied

(SM) OK, fair enough. I have forwarded your e-mail to my colleagues – your order will be cancelled.

I guess I didn’t make myself very clear there. I did not want YOU to cancel the order…I wanted to know where to cancel the order. Before my order is canceled, one of your staff really needs to contact me via e-mail, because if its going to take 6-8 weeks to get my money back and everyone else has their book by then (not likely the way things are going), I will be terribly upset. I cannot find your return policy, I cannot find how to cancel my order, and I cannot find anything I have been trying to find on your site. So please…before you dig yourself a deeper hole, contact me directly and lets sort this situation out.

But w.e Ill wait, i hope theres some freebies bundled, if the book is delayed one more time im going to cancel my order. I understand, for the most part, the delays are not caused by you, but this book needed to be placed on preorder after you guys had have the physical book, not before it.

Hey Smashing, all that third party blaming really doesn’t work does it?? YOU PICKED THEM!!! Getting stuff printed in (the otherwise great country of) China and expecting western delivery standards, the blame is on you. I find it amateurish to say the least.

Anders, unfortunately the company looked absolutely credible when we decided to cooperate with them. Nothing indicated that there could be such problems. Besides, it wasn’t the first time this company delivered books from China to Europe and it has a good reputation, so we couldn’t really anticipate that it will go so terribly wrong. We will certainly learn from this horrible experience, though.

Disappointed after reading once again the books been delayed…………..How long have you had our money? Surely some kind of compensation is due for people who ordered Way back in August i think it was.

Maybe a gesture like those who order air delivery get money back as if the had ordered the cheaper method and those who ordered the Cheaper Method actually get there delivery by Air Mail.

And why do we get a email 3days before it ships you must have know earlier it was not going to happen. You guys worked for Micorsoft pervioulsy?

5th of December? No, its a joke, isn’t it? I was really patient for all this time, calmly reading the dates are pushed again and again, but seriously, its not funny any more! I paid in August. And all this explanations, because these and those let us down, come on! Instead of giving so precise dates like 23rd November, you could have added one month to it just in case…. Why you don’t print it in Germany anyway, you would save all of us and yourselves all this hassle. Really bad for SM, because I can see lots of people are now very angry and many users will leave the blog, you should think about something more to give to keep the good image than just ridiculous explanations.
I just hope the book is worth waiting so loooong.

Yes everyone the delays are annoying, but Smashing is does everything they can, writing, publishing, and shipping a book (esp. overseas) is a huge amount of work, be thankful its Dec. 5th and not Dec 5th of next year.
