Desktop Wallpaper Calendars For September 2009

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.

And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for September 2009?

"”The Inspiration for this Calender is the city of Mumbai itself. The city which usually never sleeps, but gets buzzing right in the early hours!I shot this picture of the hen, who was probably laying her eggs, but looks lost and sleepy in her thoughts! Its Chaotic, Its Grungy, Its loud and Buzzing, but like thischaos has its own symphony which unfolds in front of you everyday!”A little bit about me – I’m Principal – Design at Pineapple Consulting ( www.pineappleconsulting.biz ), we deal into areas like branding and communication design, Product and packagingdesign, and interaction design! The Blessed Night of Al-Qadr

"The first day of September 09 will be the 11th day of the Holy month of Ramadan in the Hijri calendar. The month of Ramadan is a very special month for the entire Muslim nation. Muslims are supposed to fast this holy month. Fasting is from first light of dawn until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations. On the moral, behavioral side, one must abstain from lying, malicious gossip, quarrelling and trivial nonsense. Fasting is a great act of worship for the Muslim which he performs by neglecting his desires to please his Lord and hopes for His Reward. The last 10 days of Ramadan have special virtues. Among the unique virtues of these special nights is that Laylat al-Qadr (the night of veneration or honor) is among them. It is the night on which the Quran was sent down. God described it as being blessed and better than a thousand months. He forgives the previous sins of the one who stays up and prays during this night out of faith and in hope of earning the reward from Him." Designed by Ahmed Hassan Alley from Egypt.

Thank you, SmashingMagazine, for giving us the opportunity to express our own creativity.

I would like to ask, though, if it’s possible to get critiques on sent designs, that aren’t selected. I know that there is probably a world-wide-numbers of them, but overall?! (or maybe to give a link to the ones that have been submitted?)

Great Inspiration for all to participate each month of the year & not give up.

    Best Regards,

Great Wallpapers. Really like the V for Vendetta one and the grunge glowing. Slight issue though, the dates are all off by 1 in grunge. The 1st is Tuesday and not Wednesday.

    Keep the awesome designs coming.

Why is there so many by repeat artists? (In the same month!) I would think SM would of recieved a vast number of entries, and they could choose to be a bit more selective?
Although there is some nice wallpapers in this lot, there is one or two which personally arent great.

Chose ‘Queen’ for this month – love the colours and illustrative style, and ‘Walking’ is a lovely piece, looks like a book I’d want to read. Also loved ‘centuries’ for being so different, really stood out from the crowd, and something about ‘September’ by Narjis Naqvi made me smile, lovely colouring. Great looking selection this month – thanks all.

Some general comments for people designing the wallpapers. I love looking through and choosing one each month they are mostly excellent and the choice is difficult. Some pointers as to what I am looking for; I want to be able to see the icons and shortcuts on my desktop, with many busy pictures the icons are sometimes lost. So a clear or single colour background or part background is desirable. The date block should also have the days of the week marked as well as the date. Many thanks to all the contributors for their hard work!

Field of Gold (great image and placement, but bad typography)

Can the creator of Glowing Grunge fix it so that the dates are correct for the month? I totally almost thought I was losing my mind earlier today until I realized it wasn’t me – it was the calendar that was off.

Love “prelude”. Just looking at it – with it’s use of various deep fall colors, hence the Fall Season. Great to use books as like a home, where you’ll mostly be cozy warm reading a good book. Nice!!!

I like ‘Curiosity and the Rose’. I like Alaskan Malamutes (I think they’re magnificently beautiful dogs). For me, the dog sniffing the red rose in the water signifies that we enjoy the summer scents with the rainy season approaching. Beautiful photograph!

As a librarian, Prelude really appealed to me. Its images are rich with meaning, and I can envision the image being adapted as a poster with selected quotations related to the power of reading. Do you grant permissions to non-profits to adapt these for non-commercial use in electronic and/or print form?
