Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: October 2009
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for October 2009?

Love-of-October
"”October is a month full of endless questions about creativity. Should I be Jason from Friday the 13th or Michael Myers from Halloween for the costume party. Is this too much for my front yard (while looking upon a extremely detailed macabre with realistic CGI ghosts, goblins, and pyrotechnics)? Designed completely with paint.net. “" Designed by Ian Patrick Buss from United States of America.

Wavular
"Design Kompany’s “wavular” series is about possibility. Our title is inspired by the Greek letter lambda, which signifies wavelength in the famous equation E=hc/l. In quantum theory, energy (E), is indirectly proportional to wavelength; and it is in the implied spaces, rather than those we discern most readily with our senses, which inspire our “wavular” drawings. Energy is also directly proportional to c, the speed of light, and h, a coefficient determined by physicist Max Planck, who said: ÒWhen we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.” “Wavular” invokes and invites you to turn a thing on its side, move it a bit here, shift it there, flip it inside out, and consider the negative space it implies, to investigate what else is really there. —DK" Designed by Design Kompany from USA.

In an unrelated comment. Smashing Magazine is one of the best sites I have ever been to for web designers hands down. Anyone know of anything like this except for print? I’m dying for some inspiration on this print newsletter I’m doing and I cant find anything online.

Huuuu congratulations for all…..I love this site *-*
- 28September 30th, 2009 6:02 am
Very nice collection overall ( a few “duds,” but that’s just a matter of taste).
I’d look into the Disney/Cinderella wallpaper, though. Just because someone refers to it as “free clipart” doesn’t necessarily mean that copyright issues aren’t at stake here. It is still a protected likeness of a character, no matter where it originated.
- 29September 30th, 2009 6:08 am
This is awesome. I was just looking for an updated calendar from Patricia Villanueva and when I gave up came over here and sure enough. This is great.
- 30September 30th, 2009 6:13 am
Not too keen on this month’s wallpapers. There are some good ones in there, but most are pretty ropey. Bit more quality control needed?
- 31September 30th, 2009 6:25 am
‘Harvest’ is beautiful! A lot of others are great too tho
- 32September 30th, 2009 6:28 am
“Trick or Treat 2000″ is my favorite, lots of good ones though
- 33September 30th, 2009 6:28 am
Non of ‘m is worth my screen =(
- 34September 30th, 2009 6:38 am
Kill your boss > We are not stupids, you don’t need ton treat us like childs…
Too much political correctness in this world… - 35September 30th, 2009 7:14 am
Some of these are nice, but most of them, MOST of them kinda suck. Why would you want a busy, super colorful desktop? To me.. it seams to make the most sense be more simple with lots of dark space. Maybe I’ll do one next month.
- 36September 30th, 2009 7:15 am
One of the best collection so far…..
Its nice to see few “Diwali” Wallpaper as well.Hey I have just one suggestion. Could it be possible to have the source files of these wallpaper here as well. With Source I mean PSD, AI files.
These files will help new designer like me to do work like this. And this will definitely increase the number & quality of wallpapers next month onwards, as designers like me have many ideas in mind but find it difficult to have it in PSD, AI files.
- 37September 30th, 2009 7:18 am
“Hope” is beaaaaaaaautiful. And too small :(
- 38September 30th, 2009 7:19 am
It’s great to see my wallpaper here, and I loved: Autumn Leaves, Autumnal, Be Present and Cognac!
thanks Smashing.
- 39September 30th, 2009 7:32 am

I agree with Mirko #3.
- 41September 30th, 2009 7:38 am
Fairytale Land is my new background… it’s just gorgeous but I might be back to change it up to Hummingbird, Hope, Autumn Colors or The only thing! I look forward to this post every month :) Thank you!!!
- 42September 30th, 2009 7:44 am

So many submissions from Romania. Thumbs up!
- 44September 30th, 2009 8:00 am
Wow – I usually only see 2 or 3 each month that I like. But this month – WOW! So many great ones to choose from! I will have a hard time deciding.
If I had to choose 1 favorite – “Be Present”
Keep up the good work!
- 45September 30th, 2009 8:18 am
Most of them are Lowpapers…
- 46September 30th, 2009 8:49 am
What happened to the quality of your wallpapers? I used to look forward to this every month but now I almost pass on these posts. All of these designs are really immature with poor color choice and lack of cohesion. What changed between now and 6 months ago?
- 47September 30th, 2009 8:54 am
Thank you marlaine ! And thank you SM to choose my wallpaper ;)
- 48September 30th, 2009 9:09 am
@ Jase “All of these designs are really immature with poor color choice and lack of cohesion.”
Wow, really? All of them? There are some pretty good ones in there if you ask me. Which one is yours?
- 49September 30th, 2009 9:17 am

Absolutly great work guys.

- 53September 30th, 2009 10:56 am
Downloaded Autumn Leaves. The minimalism in Autumn Waves was a close second.
- 54September 30th, 2009 11:17 am
Kudos to Kevin Wolstenholme for “Autumn Leaves”! I liked several others, but this one caught my mood perfectly.
- 55September 30th, 2009 11:33 am

Once again, this doesn’t show up in your rss-feed.
Btw, love the kanye west one. - 63September 30th, 2009 4:34 pm
Mistake on Stamps Wallapaper . 1-2-3-4-5-6-6-8 ?? what the?
- 64September 30th, 2009 4:48 pm
I’m sorry, but these collections are getting worse each month. Can you at least have some sort of minimum standard of design decency for inclusion? I mean, if I just take a photo of some random thing like a cute cat and slap a calendar on top of it, does that make a well-designed desktop?
- 65September 30th, 2009 4:53 pm
I see more fresh creativity for this month, keep it up.
- 66September 30th, 2009 5:25 pm
beautifull!!!

Excellent Wallpapers! I love them all. Thank you SM. :)
- 79September 30th, 2009 11:14 pm
Better now that I’ve been linked to the right year – some really good, and some basically very ‘weak’
- 80September 30th, 2009 11:33 pm
Eightieth ;)
Who care about those wallpapers???
- 81September 30th, 2009 11:56 pm
The designs that I particularly like are the ones that are cheerful by design not so seasonal. No Autumnal colors, no fall and certainly no Halloween. I live in Thailand where its hot all year round.
- 82October 1st, 2009 12:00 am
I wish a few more WP came in 1920×1080 :(

Hey,
A great collection again…..
It gets better every month….
Please try to avoid putting those scary wall papers….. they arent too exciting…. - 92October 1st, 2009 2:25 am
Thanks SM for choosing my wallpaper, and really proud of you because I thought it would be a bit to much maybe (most of people seem to think so, glad you don’t and have an open mind).
- 93October 1st, 2009 3:19 am
Great collection ! Love this site. Thanks to the artists.
- 94October 1st, 2009 3:31 am
I love the Hummingbird. The dark purple background is serene and unobtrusive. The lines and circles give it such a delicate feel.

- 110October 1st, 2009 9:00 am
What an amazing website!!!
These desktops are so awesome, most of them are my favourites, if I really have to to pick one, then the first one “Fairytale Land” is my choice.tks!
- 111October 1st, 2009 9:45 am
Would be cool if you included some dual-screen ones!
- 112October 1st, 2009 9:46 am
I love this post every month and eagerly pick out my wallpaper for the month. Just wanted to pass on my observation. No matter HOW beautiful your design is….if the left side is busy (and this includes the calendar) I won’t pick it. Why? Look at your desktop. The icons go here. I don’t want to have to hide the icons just to look at the calendar or see the bulk of a design.
- 113October 1st, 2009 10:14 am
Great Collection! good job everyone!
I like:
Faiytale Land
Beautiful Prague
Escape of Red Riding Hood
Stamps
Pumpkin time
the only thing
falling leaves <—— with this being the best!!!
autumn waves - 114October 1st, 2009 12:24 pm
Why doesn’t the calendar post show up on your RSS feed?! Quite annoying!
My fav is pumpkin surprise.
- 115October 1st, 2009 12:24 pm
Love the “Hope” wallpaper.
- 116October 1st, 2009 12:27 pm
Wow!
You’ve really done a wonderful job for this month!
Thanks - 117October 1st, 2009 1:47 pm
Azra Crneta iz best for me, i really like that..
- 118October 1st, 2009 2:14 pm
ONE BIG FAT DISAPPOINTMENT!!! very amateurish works.
you can do better, smashmag! - 119October 1st, 2009 3:04 pm
I like “Hope” by Abigail Paul. It’s quite girly without being frilly…and it’s calm and conveys joy. Hope and calm are a good thing to remember when you are hard at work!
- 120October 1st, 2009 3:19 pm
a few suggestions:
for commentors–instead of just making a blanket statement about how the WPs are all horrible, why not pick one and really point what’s not working in the design. (you know CONSTRUCTIVE criticism). when you just saying everything is bad, it comes off as being very judgemental and egotistical. you have to look beyond your own personal likes and dislikes before deciding if something is good or bad. not everyone out there is going to cater to your aesthetic, but that doesn’t make their work bad.
i was lucky and SM posted my WP this month (This is how I pass my time), and if it’s one of the “bad ones” I wouldn’t mind at all hearing reasons for what doesn’t work about it. But don’t just tell me it sucks.
Secondly for SM–you received 95 submissions? But posted over 50? I’m glad that there is a good variety. But people are right, maybe more quality control. Maybe pick the top 30. It’ll push us designers to strive further with our submissions.
Thanks.
- 121October 1st, 2009 7:57 pm

im sorry but this is the worst collection ive seen from smashingmag.
totally agree with Mike C :Mike C (September 30th, 2009, 4:48 pm)
….., if I just take a photo of some random thing like a cute cat and slap a calendar on top of it, does that make a well-designed desktop? ”
Man, you took the words right out of my mouth.. Last years posts were streets ahead of the ones that are coming out now.. Seems like any tom dick and harry can post their “calendar” up..
Oh well. Have a great Rocktober people..
- 131October 2nd, 2009 7:17 am
yipori is a perennial favorite for my two young daughters. my fav this month is the hummingbird. i also agree that this month’s batch is so-so. but they can’t all be five starts, right?
- 132October 2nd, 2009 7:26 am
Love them! Some of them are really nice this month.
Doodletober, Mossy Pavement, and Pixel Glass are my favorite. - 133October 2nd, 2009 7:36 am
Some of these are awful!!! Especially Cinderella and pop girl. it’s almost as if you don’t try anymore to find cool wallpapers..
Disappointed isn’t the word.
- 134October 2nd, 2009 7:48 am
I like ‘Autumn Leaves’. Nice blend of colours
- 135October 2nd, 2009 8:29 am

- 144October 3rd, 2009 7:04 pm
Very beautiful ones! Thank you very much! I loved Fairytale Land the best…it is my background right now. I will be back again to see next month’s.
- 145October 3rd, 2009 7:51 pm
1) Another month with more than one wallpaper tasty enough to download. Thankfully, I’m running Linux with a slideshow option for my calendar workspace (#5).
2) Please bring back your topic / tag page for calendars ( http://www.smashingmagazine.com/tag/calendar/ ). This time around I had to search for this month’s entry after getting a “404″ for my bookmark.
3) Please keep on running this series of columns.
Vielen Dank ! - 146October 4th, 2009 2:00 am
I come here every month for the calendar wallpapers and honestly, most of these aren’t very appealing to my creative inspiration.
Autumn Leaves seems to be my favorite.
I suppose I’m going to have to do a wallpaper of my own here soon. :)
- 147October 4th, 2009 11:28 am
I like Smashing Media…
is very best. - 148October 4th, 2009 1:47 pm
Really like Fairytale Land. Reminds me of a story book… only a couple of suggestions. The “two moons” you might have been able to work them in closer together possibly, for a more surreal look, or just used one and not the other. Reason is, the lighting on them are so different, it doesn’t make sense…. Also, the calendar portion, I had to look a printed calendar to check where Sunday was in relation to yours. Call me a traditionalist, but if its not a line calendar, do we not all start our calendar week on a Sunday? Pet peeve of mine I look for when picking one of these as a wallpaper. I chose to use this one on my second screen, sans calendar, because of the emote I got from looking at it. Nice job.
For my main screen, chose “More Behind” as the colour scheme works great with the Fairytale Land wallpaper, and the calendar portion was easily readable and understood at a glance.
- 149October 4th, 2009 4:51 pm
Your Octobers wallpapers rock… Hope you run the same calendar wallpapers for Thanksgiving! Love Smashing Magazine!
Sincerely
Joe – Wallpaper Pimper

Nice wallpapers.
I love Trick or Treat 2000 and Fairytale Land
Thanks you job - 155October 5th, 2009 12:46 am
i think it’s the weakest set of wallpapers in SM ever… maybe it would be better to publish less but only good works?
- 156October 5th, 2009 5:49 am
weeeeaaaakkkkk – really though, most of these designs are terribly predictable and look like they’ve been put together in 5 mins. There definitely needs to be a filter on these.
- 157October 5th, 2009 5:49 am
I was generally very happy with a lot of the wallpapers – I definitely liked the Autumn Leaves and the one from Rumake Web Agency. The only thing is (this is just a personal opinion) the Disney wallpaper was just plain blah. Seriously – try something original, this is obviously a copyright character!
Otherwise, nicely done, would just maybe choose a bit more carefully next time? Maybe I’ll enter for next month… ;)
- 158October 5th, 2009 6:05 am
Not a great collection, few original art !
- 159October 5th, 2009 6:11 am
really all wallpapers are mindblowing………great
- 160October 5th, 2009 7:58 am
I love Fairytale Land designed by Monica Corduneanu from Romania. The colors and the clarity are awesome, I kinda wish she would’ve given the trees in the background some colors of fall, still this is my all time favorite so far!
I also love Autumn Leaves, Greetings From Sarajevo, and Pumpkin Surprise for the grandchildren. - 161October 5th, 2009 11:39 am
Mossy Pavement and moorland are my fav.. liked alot..
no other was that captivating !! - 162October 5th, 2009 4:41 pm
Wow! love it.. great job guys!
- 163October 5th, 2009 5:25 pm
Too weak… =/
- 164October 5th, 2009 5:32 pm
This was the poorest selection I’ve saw here. Even CINDERELA appeared as an wallpaper! C’mon… I did not see a little bit of DESIGN in the most of this works. Very, very WEAK. -_-
PS. bad English, sorry.

I like the Halloween design but the October dates are from last year.
- 192October 14th, 2009 8:07 pm
Fairytale Land, fantastic once again!!!
- 193October 15th, 2009 5:40 am
Lindos, maravilhosos….
- 194October 15th, 2009 6:33 am
As usual pretty good selection. But Cinderalla, a Porsche, and a cat photo? This is the kind of stuff I’d expect on any one of a million “free wallpaper” sites, not a quality place like smashing. Vet your content and tighten up the quality control. I’m a fan of quality, not quantity.
- 195October 15th, 2009 11:37 am
Would really enjoying seeing wallpapers for dual monitors! It looks funny repeating, and when i have a different one on each monitor that don’t match it’s not as fun. :)
- 196October 16th, 2009 9:37 am
In the Animal Day from Ana Laura Diosdado, the word “mexico” it’s not capitalized, should be “Mexico”.
- 197October 18th, 2009 9:17 pm
As usual, I love, love, LOVE all the wallpapers. I downlo a new one every month!!! The Cinderella is my fave==I wish we had that with other characters like Tinkerbell….Snow White, pooh etc etc etc.
- 198October 19th, 2009 1:49 am
This month I’ve chosen Monica Corduneanu’s. Beautiful scenary!
- 199October 19th, 2009 4:57 am

- 200October 19th, 2009 8:41 am
This is about the best collection so far! Which to choose? Which to choose?
- 201October 20th, 2009 10:04 am
loving the majority of the art work!! beautiful colors and imaginations!! i used “more behind” by diego homem from Brazil. I like the concept of the text”it’s not only what you see” because – I’m working on my “faith walk” which is believing even when u dont see what you’re hoping for :) thanks diego!! excited to come back for my nov wallpaper and posting this “jackpot” site on fb! thx!!
- 202October 20th, 2009 11:07 pm
