Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: October 2009
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.
And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for October 2009?

Love-of-October
"”October is a month full of endless questions about creativity. Should I be Jason from Friday the 13th or Michael Myers from Halloween for the costume party. Is this too much for my front yard (while looking upon a extremely detailed macabre with realistic CGI ghosts, goblins, and pyrotechnics)? Designed completely with paint.net. “" Designed by Ian Patrick Buss from United States of America.

Wavular
"Design Kompany’s “wavular” series is about possibility. Our title is inspired by the Greek letter lambda, which signifies wavelength in the famous equation E=hc/l. In quantum theory, energy (E), is indirectly proportional to wavelength; and it is in the implied spaces, rather than those we discern most readily with our senses, which inspire our “wavular” drawings. Energy is also directly proportional to c, the speed of light, and h, a coefficient determined by physicist Max Planck, who said: ÒWhen we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.” “Wavular” invokes and invites you to turn a thing on its side, move it a bit here, shift it there, flip it inside out, and consider the negative space it implies, to investigate what else is really there. —DK" Designed by Design Kompany from USA.

October 1st, 2009 9:46 amI love this post every month and eagerly pick out my wallpaper for the month. Just wanted to pass on my observation. No matter HOW beautiful your design is….if the left side is busy (and this includes the calendar) I won’t pick it. Why? Look at your desktop. The icons go here. I don’t want to have to hide the icons just to look at the calendar or see the bulk of a design.

October 1st, 2009 3:19 pma few suggestions:
for commentors–instead of just making a blanket statement about how the WPs are all horrible, why not pick one and really point what’s not working in the design. (you know CONSTRUCTIVE criticism). when you just saying everything is bad, it comes off as being very judgemental and egotistical. you have to look beyond your own personal likes and dislikes before deciding if something is good or bad. not everyone out there is going to cater to your aesthetic, but that doesn’t make their work bad.
i was lucky and SM posted my WP this month (This is how I pass my time), and if it’s one of the “bad ones” I wouldn’t mind at all hearing reasons for what doesn’t work about it. But don’t just tell me it sucks.
Secondly for SM–you received 95 submissions? But posted over 50? I’m glad that there is a good variety. But people are right, maybe more quality control. Maybe pick the top 30. It’ll push us designers to strive further with our submissions.
Thanks.
Beth

….., if I just take a photo of some random thing like a cute cat and slap a calendar on top of it, does that make a well-designed desktop? ”

October 3rd, 2009 7:51 pm1) Another month with more than one wallpaper tasty enough to download. Thankfully, I’m running Linux with a slideshow option for my calendar workspace (#5).
2) Please bring back your topic / tag page for calendars ( http://www.smashingmagazine.com/tag/calendar/ ). This time around I had to search for this month’s entry after getting a “404″ for my bookmark.
3) Please keep on running this series of columns.

October 4th, 2009 2:00 amI come here every month for the calendar wallpapers and honestly, most of these aren’t very appealing to my creative inspiration.
Autumn Leaves seems to be my favorite.
I suppose I’m going to have to do a wallpaper of my own here soon. :)

October 4th, 2009 1:47 pmReally like Fairytale Land. Reminds me of a story book… only a couple of suggestions. The “two moons” you might have been able to work them in closer together possibly, for a more surreal look, or just used one and not the other. Reason is, the lighting on them are so different, it doesn’t make sense…. Also, the calendar portion, I had to look a printed calendar to check where Sunday was in relation to yours. Call me a traditionalist, but if its not a line calendar, do we not all start our calendar week on a Sunday? Pet peeve of mine I look for when picking one of these as a wallpaper. I chose to use this one on my second screen, sans calendar, because of the emote I got from looking at it. Nice job.
For my main screen, chose “More Behind” as the colour scheme works great with the Fairytale Land wallpaper, and the calendar portion was easily readable and understood at a glance.

October 5th, 2009 12:46 ami think it’s the weakest set of wallpapers in SM ever… maybe it would be better to publish less but only good works?

October 5th, 2009 5:49 amweeeeaaaakkkkk – really though, most of these designs are terribly predictable and look like they’ve been put together in 5 mins. There definitely needs to be a filter on these.

October 5th, 2009 5:49 amI was generally very happy with a lot of the wallpapers – I definitely liked the Autumn Leaves and the one from Rumake Web Agency. The only thing is (this is just a personal opinion) the Disney wallpaper was just plain blah. Seriously – try something original, this is obviously a copyright character!
Otherwise, nicely done, would just maybe choose a bit more carefully next time? Maybe I’ll enter for next month… ;)

October 15th, 2009 6:33 amAs usual pretty good selection. But Cinderalla, a Porsche, and a cat photo? This is the kind of stuff I’d expect on any one of a million “free wallpaper” sites, not a quality place like smashing. Vet your content and tighten up the quality control. I’m a fan of quality, not quantity.

October 15th, 2009 11:37 amWould really enjoying seeing wallpapers for dual monitors! It looks funny repeating, and when i have a different one on each monitor that don’t match it’s not as fun. :)
