Smashing Magazine’s Redesign and Smashing Network
Something has changed here today. Smashing Magazine has shaped up. We know that extensive design changes usually create a split echo: some readers are happy and appreciate the additional features and benefits, while others don’t want to see anything change because they’re comfortable in their old habits. However, publishers have to update their websites from time to time to improve the user experience and add new features. And that day has come for Smashing Magazine.
Wet Paint!
Smashing Magazine’s redesign was done by Liam McKay and his design agency, WeFunction. We also tweaked a couple of things in the design. Footer and sidebar illustrations were designed by Pasquale D’Silva. Smashing Magazine may look a bit different at first glance, but keeping the general structure intact was very important to us. After all, we don’t want to confuse our readers; rather, we want their experience to improve.
So, minor details aside, what exactly has changed on Smashing Magazine? Here’s a summary:
- You can now visit pages of our regular authors (e.g. Kayla Knight). There, you’ll find information about them, see an overview of their posts on Smashing Magazine and follow their Twitter stream. You can also visit a page that lists all of our regular authors.
- You can now rate articles on Smashing Magazine (in the comments area of each post). The highest-rated and most-commented articles are displayed on the post’s category page (e.g. Graphics). And you can find an overview of our categories on the All Categories page.
- You can now leave threaded replies to comments. Pages that have a huge number of comments are now paginated.
- User-submitted design news now appears in the widget on the right side. This news is pulled from our sister website, Noupe. Everyone can submit news, which lands in the moderation queue and is manually approved by our moderators.
- This sidebar widget also features recent jobs and the latest Smashing Forum entries.
- We have re-organized our tags, removed duplicates and replaced some of them with more meaningful labels. You can now use our Tag Explorer (the “Popular tags” link at the top of the page) to navigate Smashing Magazine.
And Then There Is The Network
If you’ve already had a look at the new front page, you would have found some changes there, too: not just recent Smashing Magazine posts, but contributions from other design magazines. That’s because we’ve teamed up with 18 other magazines to house a productive and comprehensive meeting place for designers and developers, showcasing truly the best content around. Among those joining the game are Webdesigner Depot, Noupe, SixRevisions, UX Booth, Hongkiat, ThinkVitamin, Web Designer Wall, Designm.ag, Boagworld and Speckyboy. We call it the Smashing Network.
- The idea behind the network is to promote high-quality content on the Web design scene and to make it worthwhile for publishers to produce useful and interesting design-related articles. We want our community to benefit from these articles and support the publishers with direct traffic from the Smashing Magazine.
- Our main RSS feed (the one you are subscribed to) will not automatically contain excerpts of posts from our network members. We will have a separate SM network feed for that.
In fact, every network member has its very own channel on Smashing Magazine, with recent posts and Twitter updates. All content is manually approved and promoted on the network — no automation at all. So, you can be sure you’ll get only the best articles.
Needless to say, we will still be publishing our own insightful articles, which you can always find on our front page. The last article always appears at the top, with older posts clearly highlighted in a black box among the other SM network posts.
We are aware that this huge change will lead to misunderstandings and may cause problems at first. But we are certain it was the right decision and that everyone will benefit from it. If you prefer the old version of Smashing Magazine (the one without the posts from our network), you can use the Smashing Magazine’s channel page, which is exactly the same as our front page before the redesign. Or just stick to our main RSS feed, which contains only Smashing Magazine’s posts.
Want To Join The Network?
The main requirement for membership in our content network is that you regularly publish high-quality content on your blog or magazine. You don’t have to be popular or have a lot of traffic; you could be just starting out. You can apply for membership by sending an email to network@smashingmagazine.com. We will be reviewing membership periodically, so please be patient and stay tuned for updates.
What Do You Think?
This redesign is work in progress. Your opinion is very important to us. The design definitely could use some changes and we are willing to improve it with your help. Of course, we may have missed something. Have you found any mistakes, bugs, errors or problems yet?
And what do you think of the whole thing? We are open to your suggestions, ideas and criticism. Please let us know what you think in the comments to this post!

October 31st, 2009 2:09 pmNice!
I’m happy that redesign is not a very big change for all SM readers. And the old structure of information is still understandable.
Patrick
October 31st, 2009 2:11 pmDon’t much like the Network section. Now, if there was a way to turn it off or to remove network contributors I didn’t want, then I’d be happier with it, but from now on, I’ll be using the Smashing RSS feed rather than the website. Sorry.
Sven Lennartz
October 31st, 2009 2:19 pmthere is a way, patrick. just use http://sm.smashingmagazine.com/ from now on.

October 31st, 2009 2:16 pmReally like the new look. The network section is cool, creates more of a community here than “just” a magazine.
Good job Smashing!
Henrik
October 31st, 2009 2:17 pmI like it, well done! The only thing that I might have a small issue with is the upper menu, I agree with Henri on that, other than that a really nice design that feels just a bit more precise.

October 31st, 2009 2:18 pmhola smashing
just did my first redesign/build of a community site that needed updating..nothing on the scale of SM but it was a daunting and stressful process :)

October 31st, 2009 2:23 pmi dig the combination of the feed there.. i’ve been checking out many of those pages independently and sort of wishing it was all in one place.
one thing i notice though.. it’s not clear anymore what exactly the search at the top of the page searches through. i notice it’s only the smashingmagazine posts.. which makes sense.. but i think it could stand to be a little more clear.

October 31st, 2009 2:33 pmIt is hard to tell on the homepage when you have reached the end of one article and are starting the next. Definitely need some separators. Also the hover on the titles of the articles. Again definitely need some visual feedback on that. That is one that has always frustrated me about the site. Other than that I like it, except for the menu bar doesn’t look quite right.
That’s just my two cents. I do like it, but i thought i would just point that out.
tripdragon
October 31st, 2009 2:34 pmEhhhhhh Cartoon heads. Can I block those? The footer ones. Good artist, just not a fan.
Andrew Miguelez
October 31st, 2009 2:34 pmFound a minor bug. The top nav doesn’t have a high enough z-index to stay above advertisements (at least in the post body). On certain pages/posts where the advertisement is close enough to the top of the layout (single-line titles), the category drop down gets covered by the ad instead of covering it during the hover state.
Otherwise, looks good. Not much my taste, but you can’t please everyone! It’s definitely not an eyesore so nice work!

October 31st, 2009 2:48 pmDesign is just awesome. love the rating thing in comments.
What I’d rather say is workout with how comments show-up (display) and their UI.
I’ll also add, change the way the social buttons look at the end of the post. retweet, share etc..
but at the end, its all yours.. As you like it..
We have to come here anyways ! ;)

October 31st, 2009 2:57 pmI really like the new design and layout. I also really like the network and who you chose. The combination of big names like Nick La and up-and-comers with great talent like Build Internet is going to really add to the value of Smashing Magazine as a hub for creative and innovative web developer content.

November 1st, 2009 12:56 amHow many people seriously want to change their default background colour to something silly like Magenta though? Really.
Freddy
November 2nd, 2009 3:19 pmIt doesn’t have to be magenta: My default background color is a light grey (#e0e0e0), which is already enough to throw a website off that assumes instead of sets its background colors. Also, it’s good (and valid) style and an accessibility recommendation to never set foreground colors without setting background colors, too. And it’s fixed in a jiffy, SM already did.

October 31st, 2009 3:08 pmI would add a down arrow to the categories-tab, so you know that it drops down.

Christoph
October 31st, 2009 4:13 pmThe new design is definitely cleaner, good job in that respect. I have some issues with the header and top part of the “entry” page. When I land on this page, all I see are ads (10 in the sidebar, 1 below the entry title/info… did you guys get inspired by Las Vegas?) and the title of the entry. Once I scroll down, I really dig the layout and clarity, but I think the top part is not well resolved.
There is a lot of white (black) space in the nav bar and around the logo. The Twitter/RSS area is also way too big (do i need to see how many followers you guys have every time I visit), especially the bird graphic.
About the sidebar, why don’t you mix in the ads with content? When I land on the site and see the sidebar packed with ads, I immediately ignore the sidebar for the rest of my visit, since I know it’s used as a “dumping ground”. If you add some good links, latest tweets, recent posts/comments, etc at the very top, I will know there is interesting stuff to find.
For the header, I’d move the logo back up (and remove “Home”). First thing I see on the page right now is “Home”, where I don’t even know what I’m looking at. If you make the Twitter/RSS area smaller, you’ll have enough room for content without sacrificing too much ad space.
Keep up the great work. SmashingMag is one of the sites I know I can find good content on.
Matt
October 31st, 2009 4:21 pmI guess it takes a while for the comments to start being critiques.
I agree with this for the most part, but I still think the bottom part isn’t quite right either, and it could simply be a matter of making the side-bar bg colour a 10% grey (maybe even 5-8)
Matt
October 31st, 2009 4:13 pmHmmm… I don’t know about this. The logo doesn’t look right. The spacing between the top and bottom makes it feel misaligned. I like the ‘airy’ feel all around though.
And I’ve noticed a lot of blogs going to the couple featured articles at content width, then the rest of the articles split into a 2 column grid. It can loot good, but here it’s just overpowering with the 2 columns on the right, all with a white background (essentially). GoMediazine.com is an example of where this actually works, because of the clear contrast.
Your black bg posts work pretty well to do that, but to be honest at first I thought those were ads immersed in the posts, until I read this article.
Maybe smashingmagazine.com can be what sm.smashingmagazine.com is now, because it’s better. Then maybe smashingnetwork.com or something can be this (like the way tutsplus.com aggregates all the tuts feeds into a single, simple, dashboard (which also allows me to ‘turn off’ unwanted feeds, and doesn’t mix content between more than one sub-site).
Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea of the aggregated network site, it’s very convenient, but right now it feels like an ‘effort’ to go through the posts on the hompage.
Michael
October 31st, 2009 4:24 pmOverall I like the redesign. Every now and again you need to change this up; “A change is like a holiday” The new navigation is superb, it has a very cool, summer feel to it; much like something you would see from Apple. I’m not sold on the main page content; I think it should be #f7f7f7 just to give it some contrast and break the page up a bit from the sidebar.
Matt
October 31st, 2009 4:39 pmI think I like your suggestion better than my suggestion of darkening the sidebar.
Just quickly rendered the homepage in the 2 methods with firebug. Both are clear improvements. (sidebar’s too dark but you get the idea)

November 2nd, 2009 10:16 amBad idea. Leave the color as is.

October 31st, 2009 4:34 pmdon’t really like the redesign :(
The colors don’t give the same old relaxing orange/red vibe and the content on the left column of the site is kind of hectic (too many things here and there).
Kennedy
October 31st, 2009 7:55 pmI thought I was the only one that didn’t like the redesign. It looks too plain, maybe I just expect too much from SM. I miss the long list of categories on the sidebar and I do not like the mini boxes on the home page. The only real thing I like is the footer, maybe because there was no footer design. That are I might be cranky sense I have been up for over 30hrs.
Josh
October 31st, 2009 4:51 pmI like it! I love how you’ve incorporated the network too. Seems to me that the logo in the header should be a bit bigger though as the navigation seems to overpower your branding.
Thanks for all the inspiration over the years!
gideon
October 31st, 2009 4:55 pmLike the new design! Great job, had a bit of trouble finding the channels. I would absolutely love an rss feed for all the channels together. So i can get updates on web design all day long from one place! How about it, I can has feed?

October 31st, 2009 5:28 pmJust let me tell you… I’m a big fan of Smashing Magazine, your articles, knowledge, and the inspiration you give me. You’re great!
But you’ve never looked like a babe, and this re-design does not make you much more like a babe (on the visual side).
But I still love you, and don’t care – whatsoever – about your looks :)
