Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: December and Christmas 2009
Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: December and Christmas 2009 (via @smashingmag) -
Over the last months our readers were complaining about the low quality of wallpapers featured in the Desktop Wallpaper Calendar series here on Smashing Magazine. To keep the very high quality of the competition and motivate artists and designers to put more thoughts and ideas into creating original and beautiful wallpapers, we carefully reviewed our quality guidelines and decided to select featured wallpapers more strictly. Consequently, over 65% of wallpapers submitted to us in November unfortunately didn’t make it to this post.
We may have been a bit too strict or we may have been not strict enough – please let us know what you think and please also let us know how we can improve the quality of this series!
This post features 45 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So which wallpapers have we received for December 2009?

Please notice that we respect the ideas and motivation behind artists’ work which is why we’ve given artists full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. And this is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us, but designed from scratch by the artists themselves.
Thanks to all designers for participation. Join in next month! And smashing December and a smashing new year, folks!

November 30th, 2009 9:46 amThey’re nice, but why are so many of them Christmas themed? Not everyone celebrates Christmas, I’d like to see a few more December/New Year/Winter/Neutral ones too!
- 4
November 30th, 2009 10:26 amI’m going to agree with that too. To many Christmas themed designs and as I don’t celebrate it it left me with very few choices.
- 5
November 30th, 2009 12:53 pmWould love to have seen what you would come up with.
The more the merrier!
Anyone, from what I understand, could have submitted. - 6
November 30th, 2009 9:01 pmYeah, even I agree with that point. Lots of Christmas themed designs.
- 7
December 1st, 2009 7:40 amThen Start to.
- 8
December 10th, 2009 5:26 pmIt’s free. If you don’t like it, then make your own. Or don’t visit anymore.
Too much Christmas? Then I suggest you migrate to another planet where majority of the population does not celebrate such a holiday.
Oh, and make sure you go to work on the 25th, since you don’t believe in the spirit of the holiday anyway.
Anyway, for me the balance of non-Christmas themed wallpapers is just about right, considering the percentage of scrooges in the entire population.

- 9
November 30th, 2009 11:29 amI totally agree
- 10
December 1st, 2009 4:53 amI think you need to just get on with it if you don’t celebrate Christmas that’s fine, but please be quiet and let the people who do enjoy it carry on… I’m sure you won’t be working Christmas day will you!
- 10
- 11
November 30th, 2009 12:35 pmI agree.
- 12
November 30th, 2009 6:08 pmNot everyone has winter at christmas either … G’day from Australia
- 13
November 30th, 2009 6:52 pmHear, hear. It’s kind of disconcerting seeing the seasons all topsy-turvy in these monthly calendars. I should probably do some southern hemisphere desktops for us Aussies (and others). ;)

November 30th, 2009 9:53 amI can’t believe people complain! It’s free and there is a wide variety. I look forward to coming here every month and selecting a new one for the month,. Sometimes I change every week. Thank you – I appreciate them very much!
- 19
December 2nd, 2009 12:58 amI completely agree, what are some complaining about? There is some wonderful work here, and it’s all free. I look forward to the beginning of a new month just so I can come here and pick a new calendar wallpaper. To the artists-you’ve done some great work here as usual.
- 20
December 4th, 2009 9:20 amI was shocked that people complain, too. And, I have to say that this month had a particularly fun collection of designs. I honestly had trouble choosing between them all!
- 21
December 10th, 2009 5:20 pmYeah, too many complainers.
If you don’t like the wallpapers, then go to another site.
Anyway, great job to the artists! Quality definitely went up a notch or two.

November 30th, 2009 10:12 amThank you for the nice wallpapers. Please continue to provide the Christmas themes for more of your posts. While some may not celebrate Christmas, the vast majority do and we appriciate the celebration of Christ’s birthday!

- 34
November 30th, 2009 10:24 amThanks for the great selection! There were many nice ones this month. :) Even though I DO celebrate Christmas, I’m sure there are people who don’t that would appreciate a few more non-Christmas themed ones to choose from. Thanks to everyone who contributed!
- 35
November 30th, 2009 10:26 amI wouldn’t say you weren’t strict enough. Those are all very nice wallpapers.

- 48
November 30th, 2009 12:06 pmAMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you soooo much!!!!!
- 49
November 30th, 2009 12:24 pmNice wallpapers. Unfortunately only a couple of them were in my resolution (1152×864), and neither of which I liked enough to use. So I won’t be using a Smashing wallpaper this month (which is usually something I really look forward to!)
Since you are modifying your requirements, why not ensure that every submitted wallpaper is available in an array of sizes? That’s not too difficult for the designers.
Just a suggestion.
- 50
November 30th, 2009 12:28 pmNice stuff.
- 51
November 30th, 2009 12:51 pm…and they said there wasn’t such thing as a free lunch. Thanks for giving these away guys and have a good holiday.
- 52
November 30th, 2009 1:32 pmI’m soo bummed with these wallpapers. You can tell that whichever group picked them out like the cartoon looking pictures, which is very disappointing, because I come on here for the amazing landscape ones. Hopefully January’s batch will be more impressive. :-(
- 53
December 6th, 2009 5:46 pmAgree… too many cartoonish ones this month, too few amazing graphics and photography. Will be back looking for better next month. But thanks for making this possible.
PS. I thought November had some outstanding stuff!
- 53
- 54
November 30th, 2009 1:56 pmThat’s so nice to be listed. And thank you all for the nice comments.
- 55
- 56
November 30th, 2009 2:23 pmI picked the Feast of Dessert. Thanks for inspiration and fun. Merry Christmas.
- 57
November 30th, 2009 4:42 pmThank you Smashing Magazine and thank you Phil for choosing my design. It’s my first time to join an online contest and I’m so happy there are people who are appreciate my work. You guys keep me going on.Thank you so much!

- 65
November 30th, 2009 5:03 pmIt’s just getting better each month. I have 13 to choose from, and this isn’t going to be easy.
- 66
November 30th, 2009 5:21 pmI celebrate xmas, but still would have liked to have seen some more snow/winter themes. (I guess those are more likely to be submitted Jan/Feb.) Even with that said I think this has got to be one of the best wallpaper collections so far this year. Great job to all the designers.
- 67
November 30th, 2009 5:35 pmI thought this month was exceptional!! I have never commented before on the wallpapers, but the designers are wonderful.
I think the new formula is working, keep up the good work, we truly enjoy the fresh looks on our computer screens!
Thanks again-
- 68
November 30th, 2009 5:54 pmI sent my wallpaper of December to contest, and i didn’t receive any reason why my wallpaper didn’t accept :( …

- 76
November 30th, 2009 8:37 pmI’m going to use Xmas Tree, Designed by Vlad Gerasimov from Irkutsk, Russia. :)
- 77
November 30th, 2009 8:52 pm“weren’t anyhow influenced by us” …
… what?
- 78
December 6th, 2009 3:30 pmThey mean, they don’t suggest a style, idea, theme, but rather the theme is simply the month.
- 78
- 79
November 30th, 2009 9:13 pmChristmas Ribbons and Christmas Couples are the BEST ones!
Good work and I am loving them on my Screen!

- 84
November 30th, 2009 11:15 pmWhen looking through this collection I liked at first the work of Alexandra Ipate. Following the link to her website I was very impressed, because in her blog she gives away lot of vector arts for free. But is she really so productive to put such an amount of work for free online every day?
When reading the blog introduction at the top of the page she tells us: “I made this blog with the purpose of sharing with you all the resources, informations, cool things that I can find on the internet.” So it seems most of the graphics are not from her. But just try and download one of her files e.g. http://blog.alexandraipate.ro/2009/11/20/winter-banners-vector-free/. Then open the file and you’ll find that the files are named like “shutterstock_17785228.eps”.
So I went over to shutterstock and searched for the image number 17785228. (http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=17785228) So it seems that the image was really created by Aleksandra Nadeina and I can buy that image. Nothing there tells me that it is free. I assume that most (if not all) other images are also not really free.
Back to the calendar images on this page. I’m not sure if the image on this page was really created by Alexandra Ipate, though I don’t know it. And I think such designers should not be supported by Smashing magazine. If the original designer wanted to give it away for free, she would have done this.
I would not use any of the images on her website (either private or commercial). It could be that there are informations embedded in the image to identify any usage.
- 85
November 30th, 2009 11:37 pmthis month collection made me completely melt!

- 103
December 1st, 2009 2:35 am“Over the last months our readers were complaining about the low quality of wallpapers featured in the Desktop Wallpaper Calendar series here on Smashing Magazine.”
Trolls are everywhere, but you don’t need to listen to them, let them decay alone in their holes…amazing, SM, as usual, and as the previous months.
- 104
December 1st, 2009 3:18 amThis month calendars are so cool! I’m glad mine’s was accepted too, good job all designers , and i’ looking forward for next month calendars!
P.S: My favorites are : Starrain by mooti from Germany ,

December is most important month because of christmas! - 113
December 1st, 2009 4:55 amThese are absolutely gorgeous – now I’m going to struggle to decide which one to use!
Thanks a lot, guys :)
- 114
December 1st, 2009 5:21 amNot really that good though are they… Smashing Magazine often showcase stuff of a lot higher quality (not desktop calendars though, don’t see the point in them), so I don’t see where their taste has gone for these.
Great showcase of people’s iStock purchases though! - 115
December 1st, 2009 5:31 amI luvvvv U Smashing Magazine! Look forward to the graphics every month! God Bless U!
- 116
December 1st, 2009 5:46 amI agree with the comment about what seems to be a leaning toward cartoonish designs. “Winter Magic” is a beautful example of a more realistic design, but it is in very small company. Perhaps a few more with photos next time?
And I just have to say that it’s very sad to see so many Christmas designs without any mention of Jesus, Savior, Messiah, or Coming King.
Merry Christmas (to those of you who do celebrate it)!
- 117
December 1st, 2009 5:50 amNice job guys, definitely a step up from last month’s submissions. Keep up the good (weeding) work and keeping the quality high!
- 118
December 1st, 2009 6:30 amSad! My work didn’t show up this month.

- 120
December 1st, 2009 6:50 amabsolutely love Winter Magic, it’s gorgeous… this was a great selection this month, keep up the excellent work!
- 121
December 1st, 2009 6:58 amNice collection but… i wish there is something different than every shop window and tv-adds. I like “Winter magic” and “Nyc grunge”. And I hope that january pick would not be only new-year-happy-sad themes :)
- 122
December 1st, 2009 7:02 ambeautiful collection! but really? too much Christmas… think about the OTHERs in this world.
- 123

- 126
December 1st, 2009 8:28 amGiada the best!!! A fantastic idea
- 127
December 1st, 2009 8:30 amI think they’re great!!
Thank you as always for providing me an endless supply of desktop images!! I was thinking that it’s great that there was a variety of non-christmas themed designs. Also I loved the Santa on the Beach, would love to see more from the southern hemisphere where they get to go to the beach and enjoy the beautiful weather while we bundle up =)Thank you so much for continuing to provide beautiful artwork to the public for free!!
- 128
December 1st, 2009 9:32 amThanks for doing this month in and month out. Love that I can grab something cool from you guys for free. Those who are complaining were probably delayed getting their designs to you on time on accounta they don’t do nothin but complain.
Merry Christmas.
- 129
December 1st, 2009 9:44 amUnfortunately didn’t make it this month – is there any chance that the authors whose calendars weren’t submitted will get an info why it is so (I don’t mind getting to know that it sucked).
My opinion about this month’s calendars – too many Christmas and winter themed – not everybody celebrates or likes Christmas and some live in hot parts of the world (and even those who have winter do not necessarily want to see it on the desktop – sometimes a window is enough). Besides there are way too many illustration wallpapers, it’s a shame typography and photography themed are so scarce.
Somebody above said that some designs were originally stock images used by some designers – if it’s true that is a shame – most of us try hard to be inventive and create by ourselves – designs which are based on stock images shouldn’t be placed here. What difficulty in buying a stock photo and adding a calendar???
Last but not least – most of the designs are really lovely even if they are not my type. Good job:)
- 130
December 1st, 2009 10:04 amBest Of The Best!
- 131
December 1st, 2009 11:17 amI absolutely love this month’s collection! I know you can’t please everybody all of the time — but I for one am really happy with all of the Christmas-themed wallpapers … Thank you!
- 132
December 1st, 2009 11:17 amI absolutely love this month’s collection! I know you can’t please everybody all of the time ~ but I for one am really happy with all of the Christmas-themed wallpapers … Thank you!
- 133
December 1st, 2009 11:19 amSo funny that in one wallpaper they put the date of sint nicholas day thats just genius
- 134
December 1st, 2009 11:30 am*o* i like that you went through and only posted the high quality ones..however I am still iffy about some of them like the WhyChristmas one…
- 135
December 1st, 2009 12:09 pmVery nicely done, all! I especially like “Christmas couple”, “Numbers”, “Winter Magic”, “Happy Families are Made in China”, “Merry Christmas”, and “Xmas Gifts”. Great message from Millicent Bowman on “Seek Him” as well.
- 136
December 1st, 2009 12:18 pmThis is one of the most amazing collections! I simply loved it! I liked all of them, I dint find a single wallpaper that I dint like … so, great job designers … good job SM for the quality control :)
like I said i loved them all but my favorites are:
1. x-mas tree
2. Christmas Couple
3. Red December
4. Christmas Ribbons
5. Santa Searching
6. Snow Deer
7. Hurry up Rudolph
8. Electricity

December 1st, 2009 12:24 pmPerhaps SM could come up with a post/place for those wallpapers that dint make the cut!! Those who want the quality stay here, and those who are curious to see all the great minds at work, would not mind seeing that too!
Other idea would be too post those wallpapers in a flickr pool. To create a wallpaper is not a joke, it takes hours hours of effort before the computer, and many more visualizing. Felt SM could be treat them better!

December 1st, 2009 2:31 pmAww why no 1920*1200 for Starrain, I love it but it looks pixely when stretched.

December 1st, 2009 2:54 pmMuy Bonitos los fondos de pantalla en particular me gusto mas el de santa en la playa gracias el que dice que no va a ver regalos porque hay grandes olas jajaja esta bueno

December 1st, 2009 3:04 pmI love that so many comments are about how there are so many Christmas themed designs. DUH it’s because the majority of the people celebrate Christmas hence the majority are Christmas papers.
Let’s stop being so “PC”… - 143
December 1st, 2009 3:13 pmI calculated it out and 64% of these are Christmas themed. I don’t think that’s a bad ratio. I think people just like to complain.
- 144
December 1st, 2009 3:34 pmOut-freakin-standing!
- 145
December 1st, 2009 8:39 pmlike them all…’Any it is my umbrella’ and ‘Why Christmas’ are out of the box … my favs :)

December 2nd, 2009 12:08 amreally nice collection of calender and without calender pics i like that so much
- 147
December 2nd, 2009 1:28 amI am officially ignoring this.
I’m so sick and tired of the Christmas hysteria every year.
I despise consumerist events and frenzy associated with that. - 148
December 2nd, 2009 1:47 amAmazingggggggggg!!!! i love all these wallpapers.
- 149
December 2nd, 2009 2:05 amThanks you! I like red ribbon ^^
- 150
December 2nd, 2009 3:17 amAmen to the comments about there being too many Christmas/winter themed one. Not all of us live in cold climates!
- 151
December 2nd, 2009 9:29 amI especially love “Stars and Stripes!” You don’t have to celebrate Christmas to appreciate pretty, sparkly things and gifts!
- 152
December 2nd, 2009 12:20 pmWowwwwwwwww!!!
Estan re buenos los wallpapers!!!Y me encanta la Navidad también!!!
son TODOS LINDOS!!!
- 153
December 2nd, 2009 8:06 pmI have two grouses.
1) You should continue selecting wallpapers you like and forget about other people’s quality standards. This new thing about more stringent quality makes no sense to me.
2) Way too many Xmas wallpapers man. Just way too many.
- 154
December 2nd, 2009 8:06 pmIt just hit me that I could use these (and past, and other) wallpapers for my twitter page – working on it now. It’d be neat to see this done specifically for twitter. Thanks for all the great work (from another guy who loves Christmas).
- 155
December 3rd, 2009 3:26 am*Generic complaint about the fact that there are too many Christmas wallpapers*
Are you guys serious? It’s December.
I don’t celebrate Christmas but I’m not oblivious to the fact that a LOT of people do. I doubt all these designers got together and all decided to make a Christmas wallpaper (for free) just to annoy you. As TrapKick pointed out only 64% are Christmas related.
Anyway, I’ve set my wallpaper in the office to ‘Merry Christmas’ by Chopeh. Mainly for the benefit of colleagues walking past :)
Thanks SM for posting these, and thanks to all the designers for making them!

December 3rd, 2009 10:12 amohhh my! The whiners, complainers, ungrateful naysayers. If you don’t like it – make your own, or MOVE ON!
- 158
December 3rd, 2009 2:01 pmWow, this are really impressive. I especially like Starrain by Mooti, the girl with the orange umbrella is so striking!
- 159
December 3rd, 2009 7:20 pmMuch beautiful work, but rather odd… nothing really of winter solstice or “Christ”mas? I will have to create my own….
- 160
December 3rd, 2009 9:36 pmhi my name is david , happly christmas
- 161
December 4th, 2009 2:55 amI love Smashing Mag’s wallpapers and come back EVERY month to update my desktop. This time I picked “Winter Magic”.
As a guy, I do wish the list offered more masculine designs. This month’s selection is more “girlie” than usual.
- 162
December 4th, 2009 4:06 amYear ends fun begins…..
- 163
December 4th, 2009 8:22 amGood collections, but if it would be better if the focus is on New Year instead of X’mas……
Cheers

December 4th, 2009 11:52 amWOW!
I have to say I was really disappointed last month when I couldnt even find one wallpaper I liked. Definitely improved that this month because I really cant decide which to use! (Since this means changing to a new one every few days, I think its awesome!)
Thanks so much for picking only awesome ones!
Xeni
P.S. I think there is an almost too large focus on Christmas, perhaps a few more New Year, Yule, Hanukkah or just Winter themes would have been great, but since this was probably due to artist choice and not SM’s fault, I’ll forgive ;)
- 165
December 4th, 2009 11:54 amMuch better than the ones chosen from November, in my opinion. Great selection! Love ‘em.
- 166
December 4th, 2009 1:07 pmAbsolutely brilliant wallpapers — this month and always.
And just let the Scrooges be Scrooges. The spirit of Humbug will always be with us and is heard one day a year, but the Spirit of Christmas lives on 365 days a year!!
- 167
December 4th, 2009 7:32 pmReally nice wallpapers.
Greetings from West-Germany - 168
December 5th, 2009 7:15 amIt was a good decision to only feature 45 wallpapers. Less is more! There are very nice wallpapers this month. Thank you!!!
- 169
December 6th, 2009 9:04 amway too many christmas themes… i’m giving up on these collections for now
- 170

- 171
December 7th, 2009 1:06 amAnother great collection!
- 172
December 7th, 2009 12:06 pmNice collection! I definitely found several that I wanted to use. I do wish there was more than one religious one. As secular as it has become, Christmas is still a religious holiday.
- 173
December 8th, 2009 12:39 amI came here for December wallpaper but couldn’t find anything other than x-mas. But smashing mag should not forget not everyone is christian. ;) Happy X-mas to all anyways.

- 179
December 9th, 2009 6:47 pmCan we start a pool from now on and bet on which number post will be the first to complain about the quality of the wallpapers? Suggestion: you don’t like it, you don’t use it. You think you can do better, prove it.
- 180
December 10th, 2009 12:00 amhumml , great too ,
- 181
December 10th, 2009 1:19 amA couple of nice ones here (even a scrooge like me can appreciate it, lol!)
I’m also not big on Christmas (it’s been so commercialized, and everyone cares more about gifts than family these days), but some of these wallpapers really caught my eye!
I’m using ‘Where Jelly Beans Are Born’ as my wallpaper… :)
- 182

- 193
December 20th, 2009 9:01 amVery nice wallpapers. I particularly like the purple one with the jelly beans. Any chance the creator could make one without the calendar?
- 194
December 26th, 2009 2:08 pmLove the “Seek Him” wallpaper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish there would be more Christian wallpapers!!!!!!!!!For Jesus is the reason why we can be creative!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And Jesus is the reason for this season… So, keep CHRIST in Christmas & don’t turn it into X-mas!!!!!!!!!!!!Lots of blessings!!!!!!

Wow! Stunning collection as always from Smashing Magazine. What an honour it is to see my two sisters (Rosanna Bell, Sasha Bell) designs featured here on Smashing Magazine.
