Smashing Magazine - we smash you with the information that will make your life easier. really.
The Smashing Book Is Released: Buy Now!
Here it is, the brand new Smashing Book. Announced several months ago in a couple of posts, it has finally arrived. You can buy the Smashing Book right now. And in case you didn’t know, it’s available here exclusively. The book is available and can be shipped right away.
The Smashing Book is a printed book about best practices in modern Web design. The book shares technical tips and best practices on coding, usability and optimization and explores how to create successful user interfaces and apply marketing principles to increase conversion rates. It also shows how to get the most out of typography, color and branding so that you end up with intuitive and effective Web designs. And lastly, you will also get a peek behind the curtains of Smashing Magazine.

It’s a paperback: 313 pages, full-color images on coated paper, available worldwide. Free shipping to the US and Germany, and reduced shipping costs to other countries. 30-day 100% money-back guarantee.
A word to all who ordered the book in advance with the 20% discount. Pre-orders were on their way as of yesterday to you. Yes, we know that we’ve taken far too long, and we are sad about it. We are, after all, a small design magazine, not a large publishing house. We didn’t have logistics and contacts already in place, and the Smashing Book is our very first book. Please know that we are grateful for every order we have received. But enough excuses: next time, everything will work better… promise.

[Offtopic: by the way, have you already visited Smashing Magazine's Facebook fan page? Join the community for a stream of useful resources, updates and giveaways!]
What Are The Shipping Costs?
We want to make the book affordable to everyone and are therefore subsidizing shipment of the book worldwide. However, shipping costs to some parts of the world are extremely high. Please help us minimize these shipping costs for folks who are worse off by voluntarily paying more for the shipping of your copy. This is what we call “social shipping.” The shipping costs per book are simple:
- United States and Germany: free shipping + (optional) social shipping
(notice: free shipping to US = Ground Mail; because books are shipped from Germany, ground mail for US will take 30-40 days to arrive! If you want to get the book quickly, use Air Mail option instead). - Europe (except Germany): €3,50 by ground mail, €5 by air mail.
- Rest of the world: $5.00 USD by ground mail, $10.00 USD by air mail.
Yes, it’s that simple. We pay a part of the shipping costs ourselves to make it possible for anyone in the world to purchase the book, wherever they are. No hidden costs, and no tricky calculations.
Shipping may take between several days or weeks, depending on your country of residence. See the oveview of delivery times.
What You Get For Your Money
The book has 313 pages in all, full of practical knowledge for designers and Web developers. It contains 10 chapters and is printed in full color. The book is a paperback and is 8.27 × 5.5 inches (21 × 14 cm). It contains colorful illustrations created by designers from the Russia-based SoftFacade (Anton Zykin, Dmitry Tsozik, Anna Myagkova).
Can’t wait any longer? Need an appetizer? Here’s the first chapter of the Smashing Book. You can download it as a PDF:

Contents Of The Book
The Smashing Book contains the following chapters:

The Art And Science Of CSS Layouts
In modern Web design, developing a layout is a craft that requires patience, precision and solid knowledge of CSS. While design elements create flow and hierarchy in the design, Web layouts build up a skeleton of the website, providing a space and structure where design elements can breathe and serve their purpose. However, laying out a page is often a tricky and time-consuming matter that can be undermined by numerous browser inconsistencies and trade-offs between various types of layouts.
There are some practical guidelines to help you approach this issue in a manageable and effective way. This article throws light on various kinds of layouts, discussing their advantages and disadvantages and suggesting situations in which each would work best. It also talks about techniques and related issues that will help you gain a better understanding of CSS layouts in general.

User Interface Design In Modern Applications
User interface design isn’t just about buttons and menus. It’s about the interaction between the user and the application or device, and in many cases about the interaction between multiple users through that device. This means that user interface design isn’t about how a product looks, but about how it works. It’s not just about arranging buttons and picking colors, but about choosing the right tools for the job. Does a particular interface even need buttons? If so, what do they need to do? What do you need to provide for the user to figure out how your application works and accomplish what they want with ease?

Web Typography: Rules, Guidelines And Common Mistakes
Typography covers a wide range of topics and applications, even wider now with the Web and the digitization of information. Typography is not just about choosing a nice font. It is a complex meta-language that brings value to communication, that increases the readability and legibility of content, giving tone to a brand and corporate image, helping to sell products and making information better understood by the audience. However, the poor application of a few common rules of typography is enough to make readers turn away.

Usability Principles For Modern Websites
We don’t know a single Web designer who wouldn’t want an outsider’s opinion of their website. Bonus points if you find a designer willing to give you feedback. Keep in mind, though, that a designer’s opinion isn’t your user’s opinion. To identify with our users, we must focus on much more than the outward appearance of our websites, as difficult as that is to do. To complicate matters, modern websites quickly become huge multi-faceted structures. Competing websites often offer similar functionality, but one will win out because it provides a superior user experience. This is where the Web is headed, a sort of evolution of website design.

The Guide To Fantastic Color Usage In Web Design And Usability
Considering the cultural implications of the colors on your website is important, especially if you expect international traffic. Green, for instance, a popular color, is taken in Western society to mean environmental consciousness. In China, a green hat could imply that a man’s wife is cheating on him. The color is sacred in the Islamic world, and it has significance in Catholicism. In some African countries, green represents the natural richness of Africa. It has also been associated with money, jealousy, growth, sickness, inexperience, evil, fertility, hope, youth and death. This is just one example of the cultural and psychological implications that color can have for your website’s audience.

Performance Optimization For Websites
Slow and unresponsive websites are annoying. And if your website is annoying, your visitors are unlikely to buy goods or contact you, and you will lose money. Hence, optimizing your website to provide a good user experience is important. Yahoo’s Firefox plug-in YSlow provides tips on how to make websites more responsive. We will not settle for YSlow’s tips alone, though, but take two further steps by optimizing MySQL and PHP as well.
In this chapter, we get technical. You will require root-level access to your server machine. If you are in a shared-hosting environment, you may not have this level of access. But the section will still be useful to you because you can check if your Web host’s machine meets your requirements, and if it does not, you will know what to demand from your host.

Design To Sell: Increasing Conversion Rates
Most websites are not works of art or things made to be appreciated solely for their beauty or expression. Websites are functional interfaces that serve a specific purpose. If you run an online store, the purpose of your website is to sell goods. If you run a Web application, your website is there to get people to sign up. Whatever industry you operate in and whatever type of business, organization or community you run, you want your website to perform by getting those sales, sign-ups, subscribers or clicks.
“Conversion” is an online marketing term that describes an instance of a visitor to your website performing an action that you deem to be desirable. The main question is, how do you turn a new visitor to your website into a loyal customer? To answer this, we’ll look at what it takes to sell effectively.

How To Turn A Site Into A Remarkable Brand
The term “remarkable” means being worthy of notice or attention or, in the context of Web development, naturally persuading the viewer to mention or recommend a website to a friend. Developing a remarkable brand for your website means that people will likely give credit or refer to your website voluntarily, which is a big bonus when you are starting to build and develop your website.
Any niche or industry has hundreds or thousands of websites all based on the same topic, but from the crowd always emerges a bunch of websites that re-appear time and again. These websites are often mentioned in conversation and cited in sources of information or are the homes of highly sought after products. Given their high profiles, they can all be classified as remarkable, but how did they manage to build this great reputation?

Learning From Experts: Interviews And Insights
Many of the most successful and well-recognized designers are willing and eager to provide guidance to others who want to improve their own skills. We posed a series of questions to leading designers and developers in an effort to get some answers to common questions. The participants bring a great deal of diversity in skills and expertise, and all have valuable insight that can help those looking to grow.
This chapter contains ideas, insights and tips from Dan Rubin, Jason Santa Maria, Paul Boag, Jeff Croft, Andy Budd, Collis Ta’eed, Wolfgang Bartelme, Keith Robinson, Jonathan Snook, Elliot Jay Stocks, Khoi Vinh, Veerle Pieters, Chris Coyier, Dave Shea, Darren Hoyt, Henry Jones, Kiam McKay, Nick La, Jon Hicks, Larissa Meek and others.

The Smashing Story
How did Smashing Magazine come into existence? How do we work, and what happens behind the scenes? What is our secret recipe for success? Our readers are asking, and Smashing Magazine is answering.
The Smashing Magazine story is not the classic story of two guys coming up with a great idea in the right place at the right time. It is a story of dedication, patience and hard work… truly hard work. Perhaps the most unusual thing about Smashing Magazine’s birth is that we never actually sat down together to discuss the whole thing. We never threw up a whiteboard and brainstormed on a groundbreaking concept for a successful magazine with a solid marketing model. In fact, Smashing Magazine is the result of a random experiment, initiated by two like-minded Web workers with shared passion and knowledge, as well as valuable experience (Sven) and energetic motivation (Vitaly).
Please Spread The Word!
We tried our best to make the book affordable and useful to every designer and Web developer worldwide. Please spread the word about the Smashing Book in your blog posts, on Facebook and on Twitter. This book wouldn’t be possible without your tremendous support – and we are truly thankful for that. Thank you.

January 20th, 2010 5:26 pmFlorian – you need to stop blaming ground shipping.
Stop scratching you balls with wads of our rolled euros that we have sent you and get these f**ing books out.
SmashingMagazine = F***ingUseless
- 761
January 26th, 2010 10:21 amWe did get these fine books out. The majority of customers received them as estimated. Some were late.
International shipments just are a bit less predictable than local shipments. This is not special to the Smashing Book, but to all international distributors.

@steph: Sorry for the slow response times. We are currently receiving a very high volume of support requests. Right now it might take 2-3 days, while usually we manage to respond within one working day.

January 13th, 2010 1:26 am@ Florian : thanx for your answer. i understand that you must have a lot of email these days as I can read there are a lot of delivery problems.
i’ll wait :-) - 766
February 3rd, 2010 7:08 pmI ordered this two weeks before Christmas of 09. I am still waiting for it even though I spent the extra money for air mail-aka “faster delivery”. This is totally unacceptable. I need my money back if you are not going to meet your end of the deal. I’m shocked that some people received their orders at all! You have horrible customer service-as I have complained twice via email prior to this message. I’m sure whatever is in this book is not worth that long of a wait. I expect money back and an apology. I have yet to receive either. Still waiting!

January 11th, 2010 6:25 amI receveid my copy, finally! And first impressions is very good.
I have read only 2 chapters, but could say that the book is good write, very cleary and with examples and notes.
For me, that I’m already a web designer, is a useful guide.
Good work, guys!Steve.
- 770
January 11th, 2010 7:46 amFinished reading the book yesterday. Not going to do a proper review because it’s all been said before.
A very good book for beginners, I’m less than a year at web design and I didn’t really get anything out of it, the last few chapters were good though, the interviews and story behind SM.
The book was a nightmare to try keep open, very small so this was probably my biggest complaint, next to the late delivery.

January 11th, 2010 1:07 pmI ordered my copy January 4th 2010 – and i received it yesterday 11/01/2010 – It arrived very fast! I wasnt expecting it and it was a nice surprise when i checked my mailbox :) Had a quick read and flicked through the pages, seems like a very useful guide.
Thanks
- 772
January 12th, 2010 2:55 amI must ask, is there an online version?
- 773
January 12th, 2010 10:11 amNo. We designed the Smashing Book to be a printed work, so there is no electronic version, sorry.
- 774
January 26th, 2010 12:18 pmLol..sorry but I just have to say this, if you did infact design to be a printed book shouldn’t you have considered the size and spacing between the spine of the book and the printing? The pages on this book definitely needs to be wider or something. I have this book sitting at home not even wanting to read it cause its such a hassle just to keep the darn thing open. I feel if I try to open it any further the spine of the book will crack and the pages will become loose. You guys really should look into an e-book version.
- 775
March 15th, 2010 9:14 amNot to mention if they released an ebook they wouldn’t be getting so much heat for their terrible shipping.
I can’t believe how many people were unsatisfied with their purchase. I was going to buy this book but I feel if I do I wont receive it until the 12th of Never.
If you guys ever release an ebook I’ll be the first in line to purchase it, but I’m not going to throw my money away on something I’ll never see. I have a feeling that anyone who even reads the first few comments share the same feelings.
- 775
- 776
March 12th, 2010 3:10 amI’m sure there are plenty of valid reason why this book is only available in print form. And not to knock all the hard work and hours of thought put into this product, by everyone at SM.
But…. (here it is) surely a book geared towards the more web-inclined person and given the subject matter of the book – best practices in modern Web design. Surely a best-practice of good web design is to make things easily and quickly accessible.
We all know that if you leave a visitor waiting for a web-page to load, then they will go somewhere else. And sadly, this is the case with me.I stay in the deepest darkest part of Africa – in Johannesburg! Where it takes three months to send a postcard too the next suburb. So, I’m afraid that ordering this book and waiting for it, would render its’ content obsolete by the time it arrives.
Please consider an e-book version. If anything maybe even a summarised version…. just a thought.

January 12th, 2010 4:11 amGot my copy last week.

Pretty happy about the book. Not so much about how long it took to get it.
Thanks anyway

January 12th, 2010 6:43 amI’m very happy with the delivery service. I have receive my book earlier than what I expected.
I bought it in december 28th and just after 12 days I have receive it in my house in Peru.
About the conditions of the book, I must say it had some hits in the package and also the book. But nothing so bad.
From 1 to 10 I would put a 8.5 or 9.

January 12th, 2010 10:14 amGlad to hear that your book arrived in a timely manner and that you like it. :) Sorry for the hits in the book. The postal service must have treated it very rough since the packaging usually can take a lot of hits.

January 12th, 2010 12:56 pmAir Mail isn’t worth the money :(
I ordered the book on December 9, 2009 and put in the extra $10 for Air Mail, expecting my item to arrive to the USA in 3-7 days, as estimated on the website.

January 12th, 2010 9:05 pmI am over half way through the book, and I must say I am impressed with the amount of useful, quality material on the subjects. I am a graphic (print) designer getting into web design and usability. So as a relative newbie in this arena, this book is a gem. The writing styles also keep me interested and turning pages.
Sure, the printing problems and and shipping delays were/are a downer, but I did receive email updates and apologies for the delays, which was nice. Having worked with book publishers, I know the pains these guys went through.
For the price and sheer quantity and quality of information, I couldn’t be happier. Great job!

January 18th, 2010 7:35 amWhen did you order? Even via airmail it can take over a week to Russia. If your order is overdue, please contact us via orders[at]smashingmagazine.com so that we can investigate what happened.
As for the tracking codes: We don’t give them because it would have made shipping significantly more expensive.

January 15th, 2010 1:50 pmI still haven’t gotten my copy too. I got an email that the book was shipped Dec 2, some friends in Belo Horizonte/Brazil did received the book, but I still waiting……….
News, tracking code or refund are possible?
- 815
January 18th, 2010 7:38 amUnfortunately, shipping to brazil via groundmail can take 30-50 days. :(
Maybe your friends ordered airmail?
The shipping times can vary greatly, even within the same country. This is a bit strange and the postal office couldn’t explain it to us, but we’ve seen significant variations within the same country and with the same shipping option repeatedly.

January 15th, 2010 4:12 pmMy SAD situation (updates):
08 September 2009 – Ordered my book to Portugal

07 January 2010 – Received e-mail notification saying that a new book as been shipped via air mail (2-4 days to arrive Portugal)
12 January 2010 – No book yet, no email, no news, nothing.
14 January 2010 – Costumer care emailed telling me that is odd the book hasn’t arrived yet…Dear Smashing Magazine,
I really don’t understand why the hell there is no tracking system. If you fail to get the book here, please buy me a plane trip to Berlin, I go there to get the book!- 817

January 17th, 2010 9:02 amSo, are people receiving this book? It sounds good but these comments are off-putting.
- 822
January 17th, 2010 2:29 pmHi, it is so good . i am from iran . thanks for your good book .
- 823
January 17th, 2010 11:29 pmI pre ordered the book a long time ago, and received it. A little surprised at just how small the book was, which makes it hard to page through it. Once you give it a good break in, you can deal, but still a little bit of a bummer. Information in the book is good, but nothing ground breaking really. You’ll pick up a few good tips here and there, maybe more depending on your experience level.
- 824
January 18th, 2010 12:45 amI ordered the book last Monday and it was shipped pretty soon. I just hope I didn’t pay extra Air mail postage for nothing. The book should be here today or tomorrow, the shipping time was promised to be 2-5 business days.
Cannot wait!

January 18th, 2010 1:31 amI only have a moneybookers account, no credit cards, no paypal account. Can you set the payment system so I can pay with my moneybookers account?

January 18th, 2010 1:50 am….. I hope I didn’t make another mistake buying a book without reading the reviews….
I hope my book will come… and become a useful guide… >,.,< *cross-fingers*
- 828
January 18th, 2010 5:58 amI got the book. I am a little disappointing. The content is nothing new. I was hoping to find some new cool things. It was the same tips you find in other books.
I also didn’t like the size of the book. It is very small, heavy and very difficult to read. Pages don’t open easy due to its size. It feels like you have to break the book in order to read its content.
I love the site smashingmagazine but the book didn’t do it for me. I won’t recommend it.
Sorry for the bad review but I hope this helps to improve.PS: The delivery of the book also took forever. It was late several times.
Thanks

January 20th, 2010 7:16 amAfter I’ve purchased it, I thought “Oh well, let’s wait 4/5 months for it”… But, against all odds, it arrived in (more or less than) 5 days :)
The book is awesome, great concepts and explanations. Although it’s not in Portuguese (and you’re all thinking “you wish!”) it’s very understandable.
Great pages’ quality and great content. Love the fact that the book is in color ( and not black&white ).
The only bad part of it is the “glued pages” point. I mean, you could have managed to improve the way you stick the pages in the book… After a little bit of heat, some pages will (obviously) separate from the book… A little bit “hush-hush-we-got-to ship-it-no-time-to-enhance-the-book-structure”.
This is the review from Portugal ;) :)
- 838
January 20th, 2010 10:24 amStill haven’t received my book (California, USA), pre-ordered in August and shipped by ground mail (shipping confirmation in my email on Dec. 2)… Anyone else in the same boat? =\ I guess I could wait a little longer though, seeing that ground mail takes 30-40 days (which, by now, is past that, I think…).
- 839
January 20th, 2010 2:38 pmI received my book today and the box was soaking wet and so was the book.
It is an excellent book though!

January 21st, 2010 7:35 amAfter about a month or two of waiting the book finally arrived today and by the first look, it’s really stunning! A lot of usefull information and also the visual appearance is amazing! Totally worth of all the waiting.
Thanks!

January 21st, 2010 1:46 pmHi smashing team
My country is not at the shipping list, is there some
way to order the book and to receive it at my home address in Macedonia?
Thanks
- 844
January 22nd, 2010 1:44 amWe ship to all countries. If Macedonia is not on the list, it only means we have no estimates how long it will actually take to get there.
You can look at the estimates for other countries in the region. Usually shipping times for the same region are very similar.

January 21st, 2010 4:58 pmIt has been over a month now and still no book. What do I have to do to get what I paid for. Seems like it will never arrive. The estimated delivery time to the United States seems to be incorrect. So far this has been a terrible investment. Who knows when this “Smashing Book” will arrive. Just hate the fact that I paid for something that I really wanted and now as the days go by my interest just keeps decreasing. =(
- 846
January 22nd, 2010 1:53 amSorry that it is taking so long. :(
Unfortunately, the postal services cannot guarantee these delivery times. Most shipments should arrive in the expected time, but some shipments take longer or shorter. We had some shipments arrive in the US even ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, yours seems to be one of the later exceptions. :(
There can be a variety of reasons for such delays. For one, the christmas season certainly mixed some things up. And there’s also the possibility of the customs office making a fuss or other unforseen events (for example, a few of the first shipments to france got delayed by a strike…).
I hope your book arrives soon!

- 848
January 22nd, 2010 1:44 pmWe currently have no plans to release a PDF of the book. We created it to be a printed, touchable product and we think this is how it works best.
However, we’ll still supply you with plenty insightful articles on Smashing Magazine to read on your favourite electronic device. :)

January 22nd, 2010 6:42 pmHello,
Is anyone else in New England experiencing difficulty in receiving the book? I ordered it in early December and haven’t received it yet. Just worried that it may have accidentally been lost in the male.

- 852
January 25th, 2010 2:15 amHow early in December did you order? And do you mean New England in the US, or New England in Australia? Australia might take longer.
We do have a list of estimated delivery times. If you think your book is significantly overdue, please contact us via orders [at] smashingmagazine.com with your order details, so that we can investigate.

January 22nd, 2010 11:43 pmOMG!
I was out of my patience and thought of writing a review/inquire here on the site. But looking at the plight of everyone here, I just realize that my wait has been just about a month. There are people here waiting since pre-order (5-6 months?)I hope I’ll get it by Christmas 2010 at least!
- 855
January 25th, 2010 2:19 amThe pre-orders took longer because the book wasn’t available by the time of order. Noone will have to wait 5 months now. :)
But with ground shipping it can take a significant time to arrive to most continents except Europe.

January 23rd, 2010 11:36 amAfter 4 ½ months and several attempts to send, I finally received my copy. The book is very beautiful and the chapters seem interesting. Gotta read it and then do a review on my blog.
- 857
January 27th, 2010 1:42 amJust a short note to new readers: 4.5 months is including the pre-order phase were the book wasn’t available, yet. Delivery does not take 4.5 months to any country.
Still sorry again for the long wait during the pre-order.

January 23rd, 2010 8:35 pmi understand the want to supply a printed copy of a book, but with todays printers and the need for instant knowledge and instant communication, i would of figured Smashing Mag to release this in an ebook format.
I’m sure i speak for a many of us that our world revolves in the digital space hence some of the reasons why we all read, follow and comment via this web site.
I guess this is more of cry of users wants then anything else, i will and always will enjoy your website articles and reviews etc. but i feel just a bit left out since maybe my generation prefers the e-books to real books..
anyways thats just my thoughts into it, if it will never be an e-book i will buy it of course but will want to make it Digital for my collection anyways at the end of the day since i travel a- lot i prefer to look at my e-books for quick reference, and of course your guys site rocks for articles!
Cheers

January 24th, 2010 4:31 pmI would like to buy this book, but only if it is an e-book. Please consider doing this – it would solve most of your delivery issues!!!
Ironic that a book on selling from the web has such an ungainly process of selling it’s books :-)

January 24th, 2010 6:15 pmI desperately want to order this book but I’m not up for playing the delivery lottery. I wonder how many other people have been put off buying this book for the same reason
- 861
January 24th, 2010 9:19 pmI would agree with the guy who mentioned the eBook. I’m surprised this is sold in print. i guess it’s to avoid distribution of it online.

January 25th, 2010 5:27 pmWeehoo!!! Mine came today!!! I live in Virginia in the US, and ordered mine on the 11th. Looks superb. The presentation is just amazing. :D
- 863
January 26th, 2010 1:32 amLucky the people who have received the book already.
I’m still waiting and I pre-orderd the book and sent it via airmail. :(
- 864
January 26th, 2010 9:19 amI ordered the book on Jan. 13. It was shipped out on the 15th and I received the copy yesterday (Jan. 25th) by air mail.
I was actually quite surprised that it didn’t take that long to get here (Toronto, Canada). Looks really good– smaller in size than what I thought but I guess good things come in small packages! - 865
January 26th, 2010 10:08 amI bought this book in early December and it still hasn’t arrived nor did I ever get a tracking number. They are replacing it, but this whole experience has left me jaded and I will no longer do business with this site.
- 866
January 26th, 2010 10:18 amVisa and Mastercard regulations are supposed to state that no charges can be applied to your account until the product/book has been shipped. I ordered the book last week, my account was charged the same day and there’s no way to track the shipment — I paid for airmail to the US AND added the extra $5 to help others!!!!

January 27th, 2010 4:48 am½ year and still nothing .. you guys must be really proud of what you’ve done ..
bad marketing idea with this book, think i should forget about the book and my money … very disappointed….Dear Florian that stupid (list of estimated delivery times) doesn’t include ground mail time for Bulgaria ..
- 868
January 27th, 2010 5:07 amThere are quite a few countries in this world, so the postal service can’t monitor each one in each variation. Sorry.
If you ordered groundmail from Bulgaria you can tell us when you received the book and we can add it to the list.
Also, if it does not arrive this month please contact us with your order details via orders@smashingmagazine.com. It shouldn’t take longer than to China.

January 27th, 2010 6:28 amThe name is true! It’s a SmashingBook. It has exactly the info I need for my exam (*: and the delivery was without a problem. Thanks!
- 870
January 27th, 2010 7:40 amI read a lot of delivery delays. But you are lucky if you live in Germany from where the book will be sent. I received this book 3 days after ordering!
OK, this book is small but great! A lot of things you can learn from the Professionals. It is absolutly worth the money. - 871
January 27th, 2010 9:32 pmPre-ordered in the US and still no Smashing Book. I am tempted to pay for another book and get it air mailed as it seems Smashing’s customer service seems to care more about those customers.
But in doing so, I can’t help but look back and realize I’d spend upwards of $60 on the book after all is said and done.
- 872
January 28th, 2010 7:41 amSorry that it is taking so long. Most groundmail shipments should have arrived by now, but it seems you fall under the famous exception to the rule. :(
We are not caring more about airmail orders. They are just handled quicker by the postal service.
Besides, I highly doubt that an airmail package that is sent out now would arrive before your already going groundmail package.
If you haven’t done so already, please contact us via orders@smashingmagazine.com so that we can double-check your order and take the necessary steps should something have gone wrong.

January 28th, 2010 6:58 amDear Smashing,
I have no doubt the content of the book is excellent. But it is 2010, and e-Book is not really an option to leave out. And after Apple’s iPad announcement yesterday with the new Bookstore, you really have no choice. With all due respect, it’s time to get the electronic pages in the works.

January 28th, 2010 1:20 pmWHY A PRINTED BOOK? It always sound absurd to me you wanted to release this IN PRINT… I guess the shipping problems proved my point. Full PDF version? You CAN sell it too, and it can be updated and have links!! what a concept huh? Dissapointed
- 877
January 28th, 2010 2:30 pmIts funny on page 135 the usability checkpoint starts on number 1 (of course) and when you turn to page 136 it continues on number 3. Where did the number 2 checkpoint get lost?
The irony is when you get to checkpoint number 6 that says: PROOFREAD!
/cheers :)
- 878
January 29th, 2010 2:56 amOops. :)
This is already on our errata list, but still thanks to bringing it to our attention.
By the way, of course we did follow checkpoint #6 and let everything check by a proofreader. Some mistakes still got through, though, which is to be expected with such a large project.

January 29th, 2010 2:44 amWhy is everyone bitching about lack of PDF?! Do you really want to PAY for a PDF with no ‘personality’? What happened to the joy of the book itself – holding an interacting with the physical object? Surely that’s way better than a PDF which feels a little detached. I’d much sooner have the book!
- 883
March 2nd, 2010 6:26 pmWell… as I heard, the content is GOLD while the physical presentation is small, poor binded and hard to read. So i would gladly pay 15-20$ for a .pdf that i can print & bind as i wish, than 29$+shipping for something unreadable…
So, please, will SM consider a .pdf release soon?

January 29th, 2010 11:56 amThe best book I ever bought! It really worth waiting for about a month before it come to my post box. Yes, it has few small mistakes but I can close my eyes to it. I just can’t believe people complaining about a small issues like that. There are no books out there that is perfect, no error, no mistakes.

January 30th, 2010 12:41 amFinally got my book (shipped via ground) this week, to California, USA! I had preordered it and got the conf email in December. Well, the book looks very beautiful and I really like it a lot! The wait was quite long but I’m happy it’s finally here. =) Thanks Smashing Magazine folks!

January 31st, 2010 7:12 amI’m ordering to the UK. Is overseas groundmail (or the equivalent) likely to take a long time? I don’t mind if it does, so long as I know and can plan accordingly!
- 889
February 2nd, 2010 4:50 amAccording to the postal office, groundmail to the UK should take 6-12 days. The first batch of shipments to UK showed some delays, though, so I would plan for a few days more.
In general, the delivery times can vary quite a lot even within the same country, so it is hard to make a very accurate prediction. I hope the estimations are good enough for you.

February 2nd, 2010 8:52 pmBook arrived in Dallas, Texas 9 days after it was sent airmail from Germany — not swift but at least it arrived. Yes, the book is smaller than expected from the photos, in fact it’s about 1″ larger in both directions than a regular paperback book. Probably slightly less than A5. Shame because the screen captures loose a lot of detail and the text is hard to read near the centre margins. Looking forward to reading through it, though that may be more difficult than it ought to be — for it’s size the book is heavy and hard to hold open. As a few others have noted — a big mistake with centre margins and binding. Will be cautious about buying anything else here.

February 4th, 2010 9:52 pmI would love to order the book but it doesn’t sound like you guys really know what your doing…..
Have you heard of FedEx or UPS. I ship 3 to 5,000 packages a month and wouldn’t even think to use USPS, they are worthless!!ebook was prolly the way to go…just doesn’t make sense
- 899
February 5th, 2010 12:05 pmWe would love to ship via FedEx/UPS/DHL, but internationally this would result in shipping fees that probably only few people would be willing to pay. :( How much would you pay for a non-USPS shipment?
Also please note that despite the few problems, the majority of shipments arrives within schedule.

Could you please help me? I bought this Smashing Book on 17th January 2010 (Order #100010001), and it has been shipped at 19th (Shipment # 100007718). Up until today, I still haven’t received the book! My shipping address is in Indonesia (using Air-mail option) where it’s estimated between 7 – 9 days, but it’s 19 days already! Can you please help me investigate or perhaps track the book whereabouts? I’m dieing to read the book. :(

February 8th, 2010 2:05 amYes, you will receive it when you buy it. :)
By the way, the books are being shipped from Germany, so it is not even traveling overseas.
We’ve had plenty of orders from Spain and most arrived smoothly. A few got delayed but we made sure the customers got their book as well.

February 9th, 2010 8:45 amReceived my book few days ago. Delivery was faster than expected (around 1 week, I’m in Singapore). Book was actually smaller than what I expected. I was expecting magazine size, judging from the photo posted in this site. Quality of the cover and paper can be better. In my opinion, the content was quite basic, good for student starting on web design but not so much for professional. I was very excited when I ordered the book, was expecting more advanced guide from this book, a bit disappointed now.

My order number is # 100009670. On the 12th of Jan I received an email saying the order was complete and shipment under way. Now almost a month later and still no book!

February 10th, 2010 6:17 pmI ordered last week and it arrived today; from Germany to Australia in one week. Any delivery issues seem to have been resolved.
Can’t wait to dive into it!
- 924
February 10th, 2010 11:16 pmMine arrived in Australia yesterday, and only ordered it a week ago. Great content. A very thorough, high-level overview of web design. Agree with others that the book is a little small – would’ve been fantastic if it was double the size.
Overall I would definitely recommend this book. Thanks Smashing!

February 11th, 2010 10:28 amFlorian,
Why isn’t this book in Amazon? I like my Amazon Prime 2-day shipping. Are there any plans to offer it on Amazon? As it stands, I’m unlikely to purchase books not offered there.
Thanks for answering everybody’s questions. I’ve been reading the comments and it’s obvious y’all care. Hopefully there’s a good reason for not using Amazon, although I bet your sales could be much higher if you did…

February 11th, 2010 3:05 pmOrdered it the day before yesterday or the day before that, received it today. Very fast (okay, I’ll admit I have chosen air-delivery and I live in Holland which lies next to Germany), beautifull packaging. Unpacking made me feel like unpacking an apple-box haha!
Book looks nice. Not everything is new, but refreshing is always good. Lots of new things for me too, I don’t know where in the book to start yet :P Want to read it all!
Pages little bit sturdy as has been said already, but I am able to read it normally!
Order the darn book people.

February 21st, 2010 1:54 amHi,
I just wanted to ask a question about the “Smashing WordPress” book, as there is no post for it in the blog.
I’ve already got a copy of the “Smashing Book”. “Smashing WordPress” looks interesting as well, but I wasn’t able to find information when it was published officially and which WordPress version it covers?
- 954
February 22nd, 2010 12:47 amIt was published this month. There is a sample chapter which you can take a look at. It can be downloaded from our shop.

February 21st, 2010 8:30 pmSmashing book has just arrived now. Can’t wait to read it all. Thank you, Smashing.
- 956
February 22nd, 2010 11:41 amI love the book so far! So small and portable also.
I just have a comment about the external linking. I agree to some extent with giving the user the power to hit ‘back’ when they want. I know other developers have stressed the same idea (J. Zeldman), but I keep internal links in the same tab, but I open external sites in new tabs.
1. Hitting back causes the user to wait for the previous page to load again.
2. It doesn’t always necessarily return the user to the same spot on the page that they were reading.
3. If they get caught up in that one link and dig deeper into, they now have to hit ‘back’ several times to return to the original page they are looking at.
I always ctrl+click links anyway, but that is just my way of viewing sites. It is good to read the views of others and being the amateur designer I am, I still have a lot to learn.Keep it up!

February 25th, 2010 10:39 amHi Customer support,
I’m trying to order the book on your website.
But in the pulldown menu on the Billing Information tab where you have to select your country, it seems it doesn’t contain “The Netherlands”.Could you please add it to the list so I can order the book?
Thanks! :)- 962
February 26th, 2010 3:41 amHi Onno,
I’m pretty sure that it is possible to select Netherlands, because we’ve had many orders from there. :) A possible solution would be to use the “Force Shop View” Dropdown at the bottom of each page and select Netherlands there. Then you should be able to select Netherlands also in the billing information.
Hope that helps…
Greetings,
Florian

March 3rd, 2010 1:48 pm- Ordered on 12/8/09
- Order #100008085
- Shipment # 100006262 (12-11-09)
- Smashing Customer Service says: “The book has been shipped on 9th December. You ordered free shipping which is groundmail and could take 30 – 40 days to US.”
- Feb23rd, I complain via email.
- Feb26th, Customer Service says: “Our investigation of your shipment came to the conclusion that it probably has been lost in transfer. :( We have sent you a replacement copy via airmail. It should arrive soon. To make sure that nothing goes wrong this time, we upgraded the shipping option so that you can now track your package”
- March2nd I complain again: “I have been tracking this shipment for 4 days now and it didn’t move from origin. Can you please tell me an average time of delivery so I can stop tracking?”
- TODAY: Customer Service writes to me: “you book was sent in the wrong direction, but i called our national postal service and they promissed me that your book will be sent to the US from the Netherlands. We cross our fingers that youw ill get it soon”.I want the book, but I can’t believe this.
You should’ve waited to be more prepared for this thing.Alex
- 969
March 5th, 2010 8:43 amPlease don’t blame us for the failures of the postal service. We’ve already sent you a replacement copy with free premium shipping. We do not know why the postal service seems to have trouble with your address.
We understand that this must be very frustrating for you, but problems like this are not under our control and would happen with any other distributor as well.
That being said, we will of course check up on your order and make sure that you will receive it. You’ll hear from us via separate email.
- 970
March 5th, 2010 9:46 amOK, you’re not to blame. My apologies. It’s just that there are more than a thousand comments here on this page, and they seem to have something in common, and I had never seen anything like this before. I only hope the book is not obsolete when it gets home. I am, however, quite sure that the contents will kick ass. But hey, please understand my position. It’s been more than 3 months.
- 971
March 8th, 2010 11:10 amWe do understand your position. It must be really frustrating for you. :(
Please be assured that your book will not be obsolete. The content is not trend-ridden and will be valuable for a very long time.

My order: #100002061
Thast’s reall not professional
- 974
March 5th, 2010 8:53 amIf even the replacement shipment is lost, there is probably a problem with your postal service. We’ve had a few cases where the postman dropped the package with neighbours but forgot to inform the recipient about it. On other occasions, the postal service stored the package but didn’t inform the customer that he/she has to collect it and the package was then returned to us.
Although we can understand your frustration, we think that we are already offering a quite accomodating customer service with these free premium shipments (which are expensive). So please don’t blame us for the mixups of the postal service.
That being said, we will of course check up on your order and make sure that you will receive it. You’ll hear from us via separate email.

- 975
March 4th, 2010 7:51 pmI’m a regular reader of SmashingMagazine.com articles and have become a fan.
All these shipping problems and subsequent hit to your credibility could have been avoided had you opted to provide the book as a downloadable PDF ebook. SitePoint.com does this and I think they’ve been very successful.
Perhaps you were worried about your ebook being given away by buyers, but if a successful site like SitePoint.com is willing to take the risk, well, why not you? I think you made a really bad decision on this one.
- 976
March 5th, 2010 12:13 amI ordered the book on Feb 25, 2010 and it arrived on Mar 02, Tuesday. By land mail.
I really don’t see the problem with shipping, someone making something up?
- 977
March 5th, 2010 9:05 amThanks for the support! :)
Noone is making things up, though. We’ve sold quite a number of books (thanks everyone!) so it is only natural that a small number of shipments go wrong for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately it is also only natural that people whose shipments got into trouble are more likely to comment, so things get a bit distorted in the comments.
The overwhelming majority of shipments arrives smoothly, though. Otherwise, this place would be flooded with negative comments every day. :)
- 977
- 978
March 6th, 2010 12:28 pmWith so many complaints about people not getting their books, and you taking our money, it’s apparent this was a sham!!! Where the hell is my book!? You’ve charged my credit card and you’re happy…but I’m NOT!!!!!!!!!
- 979
March 8th, 2010 10:49 amUnfortunately, shipments are never 100% safe so there is always a small chance that something goes wrong. We’re very sorry that you’re shipment seems to be one of those who got into trouble.
As I wrote before, those “many” complaints are a bit misleading because those customers who received their book smoothly usually don’t come back to comment while those with troubles are (understandably) more likely to complain.
And if you take a careful look at those complaints, you’ll see that they are all initial complaints like yours which obviously have been solved to the customer’s satisfaction because otherwise they would have commented again. Although a bit misleading at first, it actually shows how well our customer service is working. :)
That being said, please send us your order number to orders@smashingmagazine.com so that we can check what happened to your order and solve your problem.
- 979
- 980
March 6th, 2010 12:30 pmI’ll be spreading the word on my blog and Twitter about how you crowns took people’s money and could’ve cared less about seeing we received what we believed to be a ‘real book’.
- 981
March 7th, 2010 6:52 pmHello SM staff, I don’t mean to sound arrogant nor aggresive, but me and 2 other persons were planning to buy your book and get them all together in one package so postage would be cheaper. It totally surprised us the amount of people complaining about delivery times and poor customer support (the worst part is the repetitive answers you provide in the comments), to the point that we don’t believe it’s worth it to go through a bad experience for a book.
Just to let you know that it is a real shame, but the comments and people’s experiences are turning away new customers.
I’ve always been a fan of SM and continue to be, though this lack of attention to your readers/customers has really shone off the impression i had of SM.
Regards,
Osvaldo M.- 982
March 8th, 2010 10:56 amWe’re sorry to hear that. :( As already said repetitively (sorry) the impression is misleading because this comment area is mainly used by customers who had a problem and does not show how many (almost all) Smashing Books have been delivered smoothly.
As for the repetitive answers: What else could we do? These are repetitive questions so there is a limit to how much variation can be put into an answer. :)
The comment area is also not the place to discuss individual support cases. We also cannot exchange too many details over the comment system (privacy issues). So the request to contact us over email actually will get issues resolved much more quickly.

March 8th, 2010 3:24 amhey did anyone order this to UNTIED ARAB EMIRATES – UAE- ?? i need to know if it ever got delivered coz i can read the complains happening.. thanks
- 984
March 8th, 2010 5:46 ami pre-ordered the book in august 2009
the book was shipped on the 2nd of december and after that i lost track of it.
Today it appeared on my office desk.
Reading other comments , I thought it was smaller, the size looks pretty right to me.
The layout of the page is not a problem for me, there is enough space to read all the text (i’m not fussy).
Hope it’s not falling apart, though, it look quite solid to me.
I think that the majority of the problem in delivering the book were related to the pre-order or country specific.
If I knew there were so many troubles about delivering, i wouldn’t pre-order it, but just wait untill sept/oct and order it.
Happy to finally have it!- 985
March 8th, 2010 11:04 amWe’re sorry to hear that you book has taken that long to arrive. :( I guess you know that this is not normal. In fact, this happens to be the latest arrival that we ever heard of.
I am very curious how this could have happened. Which country did you order to and did you choose ground mail or air mail? Did the package arrive with any marks (maybe by the customs office)?
I can only imagine some freak incident where the post office accidentally dropped your package under a desk and found it again a few months later or something like that. :)
A general note to everyone: You do not need to fear to wait several months for your book. If you contact us earlier about a missing book, we can investigate with the postal service and this usually leads to a quick resolution.
- 986
March 9th, 2010 4:21 am” In fact, this happens to be the latest arrival that we ever heard of.”
I’m a lucky bastard ……. i deserve a prize.
I live in London, ground mail, no marks on the package. order no:700004171“I can only imagine some freak incident where the post office accidentally dropped your package under a desk and found it again a few months later or something like that. :)”
Really? I thought the whole process of delivering the pre-ordered books was a bit of a mess, it sounds a bit more realistic ;)The book is great and I suggest everyone interested to BUY IT NOW, the size of the book is perfect for reading on the tube or train, the layout bleeding is fine, the book is solid and not falling apart.
The content is Smashing , even after all, i’m a happy customer.
To all the future purchasers , i suggest to buy it using air mail delivery.

March 9th, 2010 6:28 pmHello,
I was interested in purchasing this book but after reading all the shipping complaints it is clear that you need to get your distribution/shipping under control. I send and receive packages around the united states and you should be able to deliver a book in a week to the united states no matter what. If it’s a real problem, and you are shipping these things out of Zimbabwe or something, maybe offer a PDF review copy for purchasers since they seem to be forced to wait for months.

March 10th, 2010 3:25 pmStill waiting……Not sure what is up with this. I picture the book sent in a bottle across the Atlantic! Must have caught a wave and gone North!
- 993
March 11th, 2010 2:23 amWe use the fastest bottles available! :)
But seriously: We have just been warned by the postal office that there are delays in the US due to heavy weather conditions. One shipping company writes: “Delays may have occurred due to wintry conditions. Streets were impassable and flights were cancelled.”
California doesn’t stike me as that cold, but I do not know which route the books take within the US. Maybe the main inbound airport of the postal traffic is affected.

The postal service is so confused right now. There is a 3-headed monster in the ocean and the books cannot cross the sea. It could take 30-40 years for your book to arrive. Hopefully the internet still exists by then. Best of luck!
*scrambles through files to see if said invoice for book was ever even processed*

March 15th, 2010 5:29 amThanks for the creative interpretation. :)
Seriously, though, your book should have arrived a long time ago. I assume you haven’t contacted us before? Although we generally ask for a little patience, you do not have to wait 3 months before asking us about your order. :) Please contact us via orders@smashingmagazine.com and include your order details. We will check what happened to your order and will make sure that you receive it.

March 16th, 2010 6:14 amGood morning-
I’d like to purchase this book and live in the United States, South Carolina. I’m worried however from all the comments that if I do purchase the book I may never see it. Should I be concerned?
Thanks!

March 17th, 2010 7:45 amHi David,
no need to be concerned. :) If you look closely at the comment’s, you’ll see that there is not one customer who never saw the book. The worst that can happen is a delay.
As I wrote before (sorry for the repeated repetition, Osvaldo ^_^), the number of worried comments is a bit misleading because those customers who received their book smoothly usually don’t come back to comment while those with troubles are (understandably) more likely to complain. The vast majority of shipments arrives without problems.
Greetings,
Florian

At the top of the page I was going to get this book. As I’ve gone down the comments I’ve decided to give it a miss. So much dissatisfaction. Maybe shops will stock it instead then I can pick it off the shelf.
