It’s a paperback: 313 pages, full-color images on coated paper, available worldwide. Free shipping to the US and Germany, and reduced shipping costs to other countries. 30-day 100% money-back guarantee.

A word to all who ordered the book in advance with the 20% discount. Pre-orders were on their way as of yesterday to you. Yes, we know that we’ve taken far too long, and we are sad about it. We are, after all, a small design magazine, not a large publishing house. We didn’t have logistics and contacts already in place, and the Smashing Book is our very first book. Please know that we are grateful for every order we have received. But enough excuses: next time, everything will work better… promise.

What Are The Shipping Costs?

We want to make the book affordable to everyone and are therefore subsidizing shipment of the book worldwide. However, shipping costs to some parts of the world are extremely high. Please help us minimize these shipping costs for folks who are worse off by voluntarily paying more for the shipping of your copy. This is what we call “social shipping.” The shipping costs per book are simple:

  • United States and Germany: free shipping + (optional) social shipping
(notice: free shipping to US = Ground Mail; because books are shipped from Germany, ground mail for US will take 30-40 days to arrive! If you want to get the book quickly, use Air Mail option instead).
  • Europe (except Germany): €3,50 by ground mail, €5 by air mail.
  • Rest of the world: $5.00 USD by ground mail, $10.00 USD by air mail.

Yes, it’s that simple. We pay a part of the shipping costs ourselves to make it possible for anyone in the world to purchase the book, wherever they are. No hidden costs, and no tricky calculations.

Shipping may take between several days or weeks, depending on your country of residence. See the oveview of delivery times.

Contents Of The Book

The Smashing Book contains the following chapters:

Chapter1 in The Smashing Book Is Released: Buy Now!

The Art And Science Of CSS Layouts

In modern Web design, developing a layout is a craft that requires patience, precision and solid knowledge of CSS. While design elements create flow and hierarchy in the design, Web layouts build up a skeleton of the website, providing a space and structure where design elements can breathe and serve their purpose. However, laying out a page is often a tricky and time-consuming matter that can be undermined by numerous browser inconsistencies and trade-offs between various types of layouts.

There are some practical guidelines to help you approach this issue in a manageable and effective way. This article throws light on various kinds of layouts, discussing their advantages and disadvantages and suggesting situations in which each would work best. It also talks about techniques and related issues that will help you gain a better understanding of CSS layouts in general.

User Interface Design In Modern Applications

User interface design isn’t just about buttons and menus. It’s about the interaction between the user and the application or device, and in many cases about the interaction between multiple users through that device. This means that user interface design isn’t about how a product looks, but about how it works. It’s not just about arranging buttons and picking colors, but about choosing the right tools for the job. Does a particular interface even need buttons? If so, what do they need to do? What do you need to provide for the user to figure out how your application works and accomplish what they want with ease?

Typo in The Smashing Book Is Released: Buy Now!

Web Typography: Rules, Guidelines And Common Mistakes

Typography covers a wide range of topics and applications, even wider now with the Web and the digitization of information. Typography is not just about choosing a nice font. It is a complex meta-language that brings value to communication, that increases the readability and legibility of content, giving tone to a brand and corporate image, helping to sell products and making information better understood by the audience. However, the poor application of a few common rules of typography is enough to make readers turn away.

Usab in The Smashing Book Is Released: Buy Now!

Usability Principles For Modern Websites

We don’t know a single Web designer who wouldn’t want an outsider’s opinion of their website. Bonus points if you find a designer willing to give you feedback. Keep in mind, though, that a designer’s opinion isn’t your user’s opinion. To identify with our users, we must focus on much more than the outward appearance of our websites, as difficult as that is to do. To complicate matters, modern websites quickly become huge multi-faceted structures. Competing websites often offer similar functionality, but one will win out because it provides a superior user experience. This is where the Web is headed, a sort of evolution of website design.

Color in The Smashing Book Is Released: Buy Now!

The Guide To Fantastic Color Usage In Web Design And Usability

Considering the cultural implications of the colors on your website is important, especially if you expect international traffic. Green, for instance, a popular color, is taken in Western society to mean environmental consciousness. In China, a green hat could imply that a man’s wife is cheating on him. The color is sacred in the Islamic world, and it has significance in Catholicism. In some African countries, green represents the natural richness of Africa. It has also been associated with money, jealousy, growth, sickness, inexperience, evil, fertility, hope, youth and death. This is just one example of the cultural and psychological implications that color can have for your website’s audience.

Perf in The Smashing Book Is Released: Buy Now!

Performance Optimization For Websites

Slow and unresponsive websites are annoying. And if your website is annoying, your visitors are unlikely to buy goods or contact you, and you will lose money. Hence, optimizing your website to provide a good user experience is important. Yahoo’s Firefox plug-in YSlow provides tips on how to make websites more responsive. We will not settle for YSlow’s tips alone, though, but take two further steps by optimizing MySQL and PHP as well.

In this chapter, we get technical. You will require root-level access to your server machine. If you are in a shared-hosting environment, you may not have this level of access. But the section will still be useful to you because you can check if your Web host’s machine meets your requirements, and if it does not, you will know what to demand from your host.

Design To Sell: Increasing Conversion Rates

Most websites are not works of art or things made to be appreciated solely for their beauty or expression. Websites are functional interfaces that serve a specific purpose. If you run an online store, the purpose of your website is to sell goods. If you run a Web application, your website is there to get people to sign up. Whatever industry you operate in and whatever type of business, organization or community you run, you want your website to perform by getting those sales, sign-ups, subscribers or clicks.

“Conversion” is an online marketing term that describes an instance of a visitor to your website performing an action that you deem to be desirable. The main question is, how do you turn a new visitor to your website into a loyal customer? To answer this, we’ll look at what it takes to sell effectively.

Brand in The Smashing Book Is Released: Buy Now!

How To Turn A Site Into A Remarkable Brand

The term “remarkable” means being worthy of notice or attention or, in the context of Web development, naturally persuading the viewer to mention or recommend a website to a friend. Developing a remarkable brand for your website means that people will likely give credit or refer to your website voluntarily, which is a big bonus when you are starting to build and develop your website.

Any niche or industry has hundreds or thousands of websites all based on the same topic, but from the crowd always emerges a bunch of websites that re-appear time and again. These websites are often mentioned in conversation and cited in sources of information or are the homes of highly sought after products. Given their high profiles, they can all be classified as remarkable, but how did they manage to build this great reputation?

The Smashing Story

How did Smashing Magazine come into existence? How do we work, and what happens behind the scenes? What is our secret recipe for success? Our readers are asking, and Smashing Magazine is answering.

The Smashing Magazine story is not the classic story of two guys coming up with a great idea in the right place at the right time. It is a story of dedication, patience and hard work… truly hard work. Perhaps the most unusual thing about Smashing Magazine’s birth is that we never actually sat down together to discuss the whole thing. We never threw up a whiteboard and brainstormed on a groundbreaking concept for a successful magazine with a solid marketing model. In fact, Smashing Magazine is the result of a random experiment, initiated by two like-minded Web workers with shared passion and knowledge, as well as valuable experience (Sven) and energetic motivation (Vitaly).

This book wouldn’t be possible without your tremendous support – and we are truly thankful for that. Thank you.

We did get these fine books out. The majority of customers received them as estimated. Some were late.

International shipments just are a bit less predictable than local shipments. This is not special to the Smashing Book, but to all international distributors.

I ordered this two weeks before Christmas of 09. I am still waiting for it even though I spent the extra money for air mail-aka “faster delivery”. This is totally unacceptable. I need my money back if you are not going to meet your end of the deal. I’m shocked that some people received their orders at all! You have horrible customer service-as I have complained twice via email prior to this message. I’m sure whatever is in this book is not worth that long of a wait. I expect money back and an apology. I have yet to receive either. Still waiting!

I receveid my copy, finally! And first impressions is very good.

I have read only 2 chapters, but could say that the book is good write, very cleary and with examples and notes.

For me, that I’m already a web designer, is a useful guide.
    Good work, guys!

Finished reading the book yesterday. Not going to do a proper review because it’s all been said before.

A very good book for beginners, I’m less than a year at web design and I didn’t really get anything out of it, the last few chapters were good though, the interviews and story behind SM.

The book was a nightmare to try keep open, very small so this was probably my biggest complaint, next to the late delivery.

Lol..sorry but I just have to say this, if you did infact design to be a printed book shouldn’t you have considered the size and spacing between the spine of the book and the printing? The pages on this book definitely needs to be wider or something. I have this book sitting at home not even wanting to read it cause its such a hassle just to keep the darn thing open. I feel if I try to open it any further the spine of the book will crack and the pages will become loose. You guys really should look into an e-book version.

I am over half way through the book, and I must say I am impressed with the amount of useful, quality material on the subjects. I am a graphic (print) designer getting into web design and usability. So as a relative newbie in this arena, this book is a gem. The writing styles also keep me interested and turning pages.

Sure, the printing problems and and shipping delays were/are a downer, but I did receive email updates and apologies for the delays, which was nice. Having worked with book publishers, I know the pains these guys went through.

For the price and sheer quantity and quality of information, I couldn’t be happier. Great job!

To get your money back, you have to return the book. We’re setting up an F.A.Q. which explains the process.

As for the tracking codes: We don’t give them because it would have made shipping significantly more expensive.

Unfortunately, shipping to brazil via groundmail can take 30-50 days. :(

      Maybe your friends ordered airmail?

The shipping times can vary greatly, even within the same country. This is a bit strange and the postal office couldn’t explain it to us, but we’ve seen significant variations within the same country and with the same shipping option repeatedly.

    My SAD situation (updates):

08 September 2009 – Ordered my book to Portugal
02 December 2009 – Received e-mail shipment confirmation (like everyone else)
    29 December 2009 – No book yet…
07 January 2010 – Received e-mail notification saying that a new book as been shipped via air mail (2-4 days to arrive Portugal)
12 January 2010 – No book yet, no email, no news, nothing.
14 January 2010 – Costumer care emailed telling me that is odd the book hasn’t arrived yet…

    Dear Smashing Magazine,

I pre ordered the book a long time ago, and received it. A little surprised at just how small the book was, which makes it hard to page through it. Once you give it a good break in, you can deal, but still a little bit of a bummer. Information in the book is good, but nothing ground breaking really. You’ll pick up a few good tips here and there, maybe more depending on your experience level.

I got the book. I am a little disappointing. The content is nothing new. I was hoping to find some new cool things. It was the same tips you find in other books.

I also didn’t like the size of the book. It is very small, heavy and very difficult to read. Pages don’t open easy due to its size. It feels like you have to break the book in order to read its content.

I love the site smashingmagazine but the book didn’t do it for me. I won’t recommend it.
Sorry for the bad review but I hope this helps to improve.

After I’ve purchased it, I thought “Oh well, let’s wait 4/5 months for it”… But, against all odds, it arrived in (more or less than) 5 days :)

The book is awesome, great concepts and explanations. Although it’s not in Portuguese (and you’re all thinking “you wish!”) it’s very understandable.

Great pages’ quality and great content. Love the fact that the book is in color ( and not black&white ).

The only bad part of it is the “glued pages” point. I mean, you could have managed to improve the way you stick the pages in the book… After a little bit of heat, some pages will (obviously) separate from the book… A little bit “hush-hush-we-got-to ship-it-no-time-to-enhance-the-book-structure”.

This is the review from Portugal ;) :)

    Hi smashing team

    • 839
      Florian (Customer Support)
      January 22nd, 2010 1:44 am

We ship to all countries. If Macedonia is not on the list, it only means we have no estimates how long it will actually take to get there.

You can look at the estimates for other countries in the region. Usually shipping times for the same region are very similar.

It has been over a month now and still no book. What do I have to do to get what I paid for. Seems like it will never arrive. The estimated delivery time to the United States seems to be incorrect. So far this has been a terrible investment. Who knows when this “Smashing Book” will arrive. Just hate the fact that I paid for something that I really wanted and now as the days go by my interest just keeps decreasing. =(

Sorry that it is taking so long. :(

Unfortunately, the postal services cannot guarantee these delivery times. Most shipments should arrive in the expected time, but some shipments take longer or shorter. We had some shipments arrive in the US even ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, yours seems to be one of the later exceptions. :(

There can be a variety of reasons for such delays. For one, the christmas season certainly mixed some things up. And there’s also the possibility of the customs office making a fuss or other unforseen events (for example, a few of the first shipments to france got delayed by a strike…).

I hope your book arrives soon!

i understand the want to supply a printed copy of a book, but with todays printers and the need for instant knowledge and instant communication, i would of figured Smashing Mag to release this in an ebook format.

I’m sure i speak for a many of us that our world revolves in the digital space hence some of the reasons why we all read, follow and comment via this web site.

I guess this is more of cry of users wants then anything else, i will and always will enjoy your website articles and reviews etc. but i feel just a bit left out since maybe my generation prefers the e-books to real books..

anyways thats just my thoughts into it, if it will never be an e-book i will buy it of course but will want to make it Digital for my collection anyways at the end of the day since i travel a- lot i prefer to look at my e-books for quick reference, and of course your guys site rocks for articles!

Pre-ordered in the US and still no Smashing Book. I am tempted to pay for another book and get it air mailed as it seems Smashing’s customer service seems to care more about those customers.

But in doing so, I can’t help but look back and realize I’d spend upwards of $60 on the book after all is said and done.

Sorry that it is taking so long. Most groundmail shipments should have arrived by now, but it seems you fall under the famous exception to the rule. :(

We are not caring more about airmail orders. They are just handled quicker by the postal service.

Besides, I highly doubt that an airmail package that is sent out now would arrive before your already going groundmail package.

If you haven’t done so already, please contact us via orders@smashingmagazine.com so that we can double-check your order and take the necessary steps should something have gone wrong.

    Dear Smashing,

I have no doubt the content of the book is excellent. But it is 2010, and e-Book is not really an option to leave out. And after Apple’s iPad announcement yesterday with the new Bookstore, you really have no choice. With all due respect, it’s time to get the electronic pages in the works.

WHY A PRINTED BOOK? It always sound absurd to me you wanted to release this IN PRINT… I guess the shipping problems proved my point. Full PDF version? You CAN sell it too, and it can be updated and have links!! what a concept huh? Dissapointed

Its funny on page 135 the usability checkpoint starts on number 1 (of course) and when you turn to page 136 it continues on number 3. Where did the number 2 checkpoint get lost?

The irony is when you get to checkpoint number 6 that says: PROOFREAD!

    /cheers :)

      Oops. :)

This is already on our errata list, but still thanks to bringing it to our attention.

By the way, of course we did follow checkpoint #6 and let everything check by a proofreader. Some mistakes still got through, though, which is to be expected with such a large project.

Why is everyone bitching about lack of PDF?! Do you really want to PAY for a PDF with no ‘personality’? What happened to the joy of the book itself – holding an interacting with the physical object? Surely that’s way better than a PDF which feels a little detached. I’d much sooner have the book!

The best book I ever bought! It really worth waiting for about a month before it come to my post box. Yes, it has few small mistakes but I can close my eyes to it. I just can’t believe people complaining about a small issues like that. There are no books out there that is perfect, no error, no mistakes.

Finally got my book (shipped via ground) this week, to California, USA! I had preordered it and got the conf email in December. Well, the book looks very beautiful and I really like it a lot! The wait was quite long but I’m happy it’s finally here. =) Thanks Smashing Magazine folks!

I’m ordering to the UK. Is overseas groundmail (or the equivalent) likely to take a long time? I don’t mind if it does, so long as I know and can plan accordingly!

According to the postal office, groundmail to the UK should take 6-12 days. The first batch of shipments to UK showed some delays, though, so I would plan for a few days more.

In general, the delivery times can vary quite a lot even within the same country, so it is hard to make a very accurate prediction. I hope the estimations are good enough for you.

Book arrived in Dallas, Texas 9 days after it was sent airmail from Germany — not swift but at least it arrived. Yes, the book is smaller than expected from the photos, in fact it’s about 1″ larger in both directions than a regular paperback book. Probably slightly less than A5. Shame because the screen captures loose a lot of detail and the text is hard to read near the centre margins. Looking forward to reading through it, though that may be more difficult than it ought to be — for it’s size the book is heavy and hard to hold open. As a few others have noted — a big mistake with centre margins and binding. Will be cautious about buying anything else here.

Have you heard of FedEx or UPS. I ship 3 to 5,000 packages a month and wouldn’t even think to use USPS, they are worthless!!

We would love to ship via FedEx/UPS/DHL, but internationally this would result in shipping fees that probably only few people would be willing to pay. :( How much would you pay for a non-USPS shipment?

Also please note that despite the few problems, the majority of shipments arrives within schedule.

Received my book few days ago. Delivery was faster than expected (around 1 week, I’m in Singapore). Book was actually smaller than what I expected. I was expecting magazine size, judging from the photo posted in this site. Quality of the cover and paper can be better. In my opinion, the content was quite basic, good for student starting on web design but not so much for professional. I was very excited when I ordered the book, was expecting more advanced guide from this book, a bit disappointed now.
