Free Medical Icons Set (60 Icons)
Today we are glad to release a Free Medical Icons Set, a set with 60 original medical icons in .png 32 bit in resolutions 32×32px and 128×128px. This set was designed by the user interface design agency Centigrade and released exclusively for Smashing Magazine and its readers. The icons can serve as great in-app icons for desktop or RIAs in the medical domain. With perspective and reflective effects these can be a real stunner on landing pages or in touch screen application menus.
Download the icon set for free!
You can use the set for all of your projects for free and without any restrictions. You can freely use it for both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. The set may not be resold, sublicensed, rented, transferred or otherwise made available for use. Please link to this article if you would like to spread the word.

Behind the design
As always, here are some insights from the designers:
There are a lot of free icon libraries out there, however, only few of them focus mainly on medical icons and we wanted this gap to be closed. Centigrade conducted quite a lot of icon projects in the healthcare sector just recently, for which reason we already had some nice vector shapes on the pile. We distilled the most frequently requested metaphors and wrapped them into a fresh new style. Being modern and concise rather than fancy and playful, they are in line with what we experienced works well in the medical domain.
Thank you very much, guys! We really appreciate your efforts.

February 15th, 2010 2:03 amThe icons are very high quality and beautiful.
@the author: What I don’t understand however: Won’t releasing complete free sets of icons downgrade your own work? People might feel reluctant to order custom icons when ther’s so much good and free ones out there… I’d love to hear your take…
Thomas Immich
February 15th, 2010 2:40 amHi Marco,
Thanks for your comment! It’s a good question that you are asking and we ask this one to ourselves a couple of times, too. However, we do not think that we downgrade our custom icon work, as every project is so different and icon styles can be so different in detail (we of course have to be careful not being inflationary here).
Sometimes it is even an advantage for us to have some different icon styles ready that are not exclusively reserved for a specific customer so that we can show them to potential customers and tell them: “Look, this is exactly what you get, when your order at Centigrade. We take the style exactly as is but adapt it to the specific metaphors of your domain.”
Cheers, Thomas

February 15th, 2010 3:31 amNice one, marco!
It’s refreshing to hear others who are also worried about the effect of too-much-free-stuff on the profit of people who offer premium, paid content.
Most people on the internet actually think that anything offered online should be free and are reluctant to pay for “the next level”.
Not that I’m looking down on the open-source, free-stuff (hey I like free stuff too). It’s just nice to see someone who’s concerned about this issue.

January 29th, 2012 10:00 pmI think it’s also good to just point out that, although things are free, you always show you’re gratitude in what ever way you can.
Ie, leaving a donation, code contributions, design contributions, or using the paid for services when ever you can.
but of course, you always get the one that asks for more and want’s every thing handed.
Aside from that, personally, seeing some one pull off some thing that’s obviously had talented devoted to it and handing it out for free makes you think. Hang on a sec, if this is the awesome free stuff, what’s the paid for stuff gona be like ? Curiosity always get’s the better of you !

February 15th, 2010 3:44 am@ Thomas Immich: Thank you for the reply! Yes, I see how that can be of good use. Also, there is the free publicity of course but that is difficult to measure. In a sense it’s a bit like font design I suppose. So much time and effort goes in to creating your work! Thank you for sharing and I have bookmarked your blog ;-)

February 15th, 2010 9:33 amBeautiful, but DANGEROUS icons. Are you sure the end-user/the patient is going to understand these icons the way you meant it??????
What about localisation? How are Chinese, European, African nurses going to understand/interpret these icons?
Tai
February 15th, 2010 10:28 am@Flacke definitely important to consider. However I believe that icons are better at traversing cultural and communication barriers better than translation software.
Flacke
February 16th, 2010 4:36 amTranslation software should be used by professional translators only. They know whether the translated text is correct or not.
Research at the Univ of Michigan showed that icons are _not perceived_ in the same way in different cultures/countries.
In the US and in Europe, the pregnant woman icon with the slash means “Don’t take this medicine if you are pregnant”. In some African countries, it was understood as “If you take this medicine, you won’t get pregnant”.

January 25th, 2012 5:23 pmThese are nice, but a larger size would be very helpful. I use images like these in Visio workflows all the time and these are a bit too small for what I need. Stetching smaller images like these reduces quality while shrinking a larger image retains the quality. Any chance on getting these in a larger size?
