edit functions.php; go to the end – last line; there is a php short tag ( <? … instead of <?php …. ) which not all systems understand.
change that to the normal <?php .

My blog definitely needed a new look, although I haven’t decided whether this is the one I want. It’s better than the default that came with my WP installation.

I was not able to make the simple-post-thumbnails plugin work, though. When I copied it up to the blog with FTP, it did not show up in the plugins list, so I tried installing it from the plugin site, and WP gave a warning that it might not be compatible with the current WP version. I did find a thumbnail to use, and hard-coded it into the theme, along with some other coding changes. It’s supposed to be GPL’d but the copyright notice in the code does not indicate that.

Any rate, I got some useful experience with installing and modifying a WP theme. Themes don’t look like they are terribly hard to write, so I may try my hand at one (in my ‘copious’ free time, that is).

Its a great looking theme but I find it dissapointing that it aint translatable. There are many nationalities reading SM, not just US citizen. Many themes you guys post are not translatable, (Actually is there one that is? I have followed SM for a year now and can’t remember a translation friendly theme being posted).

So there ends the complaining, in the future please think of this. Saves us non english speakers a good amount of time. Otherwise its a awesome theme! Great work.

    Hi!
This looks great, but it didn’t work on my WordPress 2.9.2 version at once.
    I got this error message:
” Unpacking the package. Installing the theme, Theme Installed successfully.

Warning: fopen(/home/content/i/c/o/html/wp-content/themes/designpile_wp/style.css) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/content/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3598

Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/content/i/c/o/html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3604 ”

When I tried to activate the theme I got this message:
” The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme.”

I tried to remove it and delete the installation folder and install the one from the site.com website, but it was not working..

You have to unzip the package and zip the designpile file again and upload it using wordpress. Now everything should be working fine.

Just wanted to share that one with you since I think a lot of you perhaps will do the same mistake as me :-D

    Great theme – Love it!

Nice theme but I really have a concern about all these quasi-designers regurgitating others templates while their own skills grow rusty. Templates are no different to programmers that jam clip art into their clients sites and call it graphic design. Lets continue to create new work for graphic designers, become productive rather than enabling this visual spam to infect websites worldwide. We have designers here who WANT to reproduce this design for their own website, why? What happened to original artwork? How can you seriously call yourself a designer if you’d accept a reproduction for your own showcase.

Great theme, and I was able to use it with 2.9.2. Just a couple of notes:
    - To get the simple thumbnails to work, I had to add the “thumbnails” folder myself with the proper permissions via FTP, then install the theme. I noticed the download on this site did not provie all of the plugin files. The “install” feature through the wp-admin plugin area did not do it either. My solution? I downloaded the files from the plugin page, uploaded via FTP, and it worked.

    - I do not get the contact page error – but you should verify that the settings are all correct on the designpile settings area for the contact section. I also do not get the navigation issue – my pages are set by page ID, with no added plugins, and are working great.

    - The ad section. I could not get the 2 column to work either. However, I did after I went into the plugin editor for the WP125 plugin, went to the CSS, and changed the padding from 10 px to 2 px in the last section/paragraph. You can give that a try.

    - Yes, you can change the graphics quite easily. The easiest way to do it is to locate the images in the theme folder (under images) and edit them in Photoshop, then FTP them right on up to the same location on your server. Done! For logos, default thumbs, etc, I would use the options provided for the theme in the admin area under settings.

    - I now have the site working great. My only question is the footer still has the design copyright to “designpile” and I cannot find the option to change it. I am, worried if I change it in the footer itself, I will violate the GPL and the template will stop working. I know better than to remove the “provider” of the theme, but my content is obviously not the copyright of designpile.

    - You can see my site, though I am still working on it, at blues.jfrewald.com. I would be happy to help those I can help, since SM has helped me so much in the past.

    Great theme!

Pretty clean, but is WordPress ruining web design? While they are easily accessible/modified and praised for that, is it taking a) business away from the freelancer, and b) is it making web design the mass-production market like other “factory” businesses?

I see a rather large picture on everyones version of the blog, but cannot find a way to post a large image. For those of you having trouble with the sidebar, here’s a tip. Make sure you installed both required plugins. Make sure you have “Simple Post Thumbnails” installed, and “WP125″ Plugin installed. Next, make sure you add content to your sidebar using Appearence – Widgets -> Sidebar. You can drag items in there…

Good Luck! I’ll be pimping out symbionmedia.com/blog/

to show a featured post you have to add “featured” to your tags and create a custom field, called “featured_img” and post the direct URL to the image !

For anyone experiencing the same problem as me above I have a solution. First off I tried editing the functions.php closing tag as a few people suggested but this had no effect for me. So in the end I uninstalled the zip (and I was sure that the zip was only the theme and not theme plus instructions) and then rather than uploading it again using the “upload zip” option, I instead pasted the unzipped folder directly into my theme folder. Then I refreshed my admin theme page and hit preview – it works now. Odd.

Just use the Text widget. Simply write About Author as title and then your text in the description. Should be good to go.

ISSUE: I can’t seem to use any widget that involves an image on the sidebar for this theme. I’ve tried about 5 of them, and each time the image will not appear. These same widgets work on other blog sites. Anyone else have this issue?

Is there a forum or support group for this theme? I’ve seen 2 people ask about how to get the featured post to work and it really hasn’t been answered so that everyone can understand. Also, I have tried to change the page of my post through the Settings/Reading section and the posts will not post to another page. Since this theme has a lot of tweeks that need to be done, it would be great if there was a forum.

Okay, I figured out how to add the featured post…

#1 – The first thing that you need to do is upload your photo. I used the “thumbnail” thing and it did not work for me, so I opened a free account with Photobucket. I went to the Photobucket account and uploaded the image I wanted to use. Once the image is uploaded, it will give you several ways to “share” the link. Click the link above the photo that says “share”, then click, “get a link code”. Copy the link for “Direct link for layout pages”.

Now go back to you blog.

#2 – Create a post as you normally would. You can name the post whatever you like and in the text area, you can type whatever you want to.

#3 – Scroll down to the bottom of the page and find “Custom Fields”. In the name field, you will put “featured_img” (without the ” marks). In the “Value” section, paste your Photobucket link.

#4 – Next, go over to the right of the screen and in the “Tags” section, type in the word: featured

Publish your post and there it is!

***Now this is how you answer a question (if you know the answer) :)

Edit:: I’ve been trying to figure out how you can “center” the image. If I figure it out, I will come back and explain. If someone else know, please share.

I am having a problem with page navigation. You know the thing where there is a previous and next page. It has css code for it, just not implemented. I know there was a “fix” shown earlier in the posts, but the fix no longer works as I have just did it. 100% fresh clean install and simply replace home.php with the fixed home.php. Can anyone help me with the previous and next page thing? Oh and I am a super noob :D

EDIT: Just figured it out, you need to have over 10 posts in order for the navigation to show up on the bottom. Don’t know why considering you can set it so that there are only 6 posts on the front page . . . oh well solved :D

What could be the problem? :(
