Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: March 2010
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for March 2010?
Please notice that you can also download the March 2010 Windows 7 Theme, prepared by Tim Heuer for Smashing Magazine and its readers.
[Offtopic: By the way, did you know that Smashing Magazine has a mobile version? Try it out if you have an iPhone, Blackberry or another capable device.]

March 1st, 2010 3:28 pmGreat Wall Papers once again! Thank You Smashing Magazine! Spring Bloom is my favorite, but it was hard to choose between that one and the Haiku on Hanami-so that one will go on my laptop.

- 21
February 28th, 2010 3:35 amIt would be nice if you could split the calendars up into three different categories:
1. Week starts on Monday
2. Week starts on Sunday
3. Linear calendarI ofter find a lot of awesome wallpapers that I would like, but I just can’t use the ones that start the week on Sunday. Maybe you could ask the designers to submit one of each? So for the non-linear week designs, the download options would be:
preview
with calendar – Monday-based week
with calendar – Sunday-based week
without calendarThat would help a lot! Thanks!

- 27
February 28th, 2010 4:05 amGhost Stories is the best..
But a bit depressing though :) - 28
February 28th, 2010 4:05 amI really love Smashing Magazine, but I absolutely detest these wallpaper posts, simply because they are so extremely ugly. They are in no way innovative, creative or inspiring. Please quit this habit of this monthly spray of vomit!
- 29
March 1st, 2010 6:10 pmThough honestly I don’t much like this month’s wallpapers, others may find them beautiful and usable. So the same old saying, if you don’t like them – too bad. Why so aggressive?
- 30
March 2nd, 2010 6:42 amI really have enjoyed some of the Calendar months in the past but especially lean months like this one seem to detract from the usual quality I expect from Smashing magazine. Yet this collection still merited 4 stars out of 5?
After more than twenty years of agency work I must admit that I am surprised. I think it’s fair to ask yourself if this work would share that level of acceptance in the real world. I think there are those who are “boosters” for the site and are very “charitable” in a way you’d expect your mother to be, just happy that you competed. In my life as a creative director that has hardly ever been enough.
If you are going to “rank” this work there must be a level of oversight to prevent “grade inflation.” The work must be compared with the broad spectrum of work produced by our community to have any validity.
Simply put, all work is not equal.

February 28th, 2010 6:17 amGreat selection, thanks so much for the round-up.
I’m glad that more masculine wallpapers got featured this time round, very much a 50/50 split – which is very, very cool.
Keep it up.

February 28th, 2010 12:25 pmSolar, optimist, and promising; but at the same time simple and refined, namely:
A NEW DAY.- 60
March 1st, 2010 2:04 amI LOVE A New Day except that the dates are wrong. There are two 29s.

March 2nd, 2010 1:13 amThank you so much, I honestly didn’t realise the mistake :(
- 62
March 2nd, 2010 2:09 amThank you, I honestly didn’t realise my mistake at the time :(
- 63
March 2nd, 2010 9:15 amThen you honestly didn’t check your work carefully enough before you submitted it. This brings to mind an earlier poster’s concern about these designs “making it” in the real world. You have a responsibility as a designer to make certain that your work is accurate. And SM should never have accepted it in the first place until it was corrected.
For those of you who think I’m being harsh, consider if this would be for actual paying clients. This would not be acceptable to them.
- 64
March 2nd, 2010 11:00 pmI understand that I should have checked my work closely and picked up on my mistake. It was an honest one and we’re all humans beings, therefore we are inclined to make mistakes. You could look at a piece of work a thousand times and still not pick it up. In the design industry, it’s not acceptable to paying clients, but it happens and you learn from it.
- 65
April 4th, 2010 4:35 amYes, I do think you’re being too harsh here. Imho it would have been sufficient to point out that the date was incorrect, like Brian, instead of launching into a mini-tirade.

- 94
March 1st, 2010 1:50 amI agree with Tuhin Kumar, the quality is compromised. No comparison between old collections and this one. This would be first month when I will stick to my previous wallpaper collection and wouldn’t update my wallpaper with any of the showcased one this month.
- 95
March 1st, 2010 2:02 amI LOVE A New Day except that the dates are wrong. There are two 29’s and it wouldn’t normally bother me but that’s my anniversary and it simply bothers me a bit….
- 96

Just like the way the word is used in another context. - 102

March 1st, 2010 10:39 amHad there been a dropped P in Lucky Me, Designed by Valerie Morgan from USA, it would have been my first choice.
- 123
March 1st, 2010 1:27 pmWhat is a dropped P?
- 124
March 1st, 2010 6:43 pmValerie, for Plucky. Having pluck or courage of course. A “p” off to the side would read p…lucky me. I’m into inspirational subliminal hidden messages. One can then be plucky to be lucky and vice versa lucky to be plucky. .

good job designers :) - 133
March 1st, 2010 2:26 pmWallpapers this month are “okay” at best. The Mario one could have been done a lot better to capture the mood of it. Right now it is the most cliche wallpaper with Mario and a couple clouds slapped on top. Whoopy! Great job on getting the posts main image though…
And does SM or anybody here know what HD is? None of these are HD resolutions. 480p, 720p, 1080p… I have a Mac with 16:10 (not true HD) and a secondary monitor that is 16:9 (true HD). How did 16:10 get to be the standard resolution when 16:9 is used more often?

March 1st, 2010 9:23 pmVery nice wallpapers and very inspirational article. Honestly speaking I had never think about an desktop as an inspiration because I thought we are not so free to look at our wallpapers and thus never care for the wallpaper but now my vision is quite changed. And from all the design I liked “The Road of Success” a lot. I felt it’s very inspirational and also looks good.Pandora batteries

March 2nd, 2010 7:12 amThere are others done so creatively
Valerie Martin USA Are you doing all you can? clever shadowing. So right question.
“If I would be a ladybug…” Designed by Christine Schirbel from Germany. Just wow. the thoughts turn just long enough for relief from a cruel day to be embraced by such massive beauty and refreshed enough to yes do all one can in one’s own way.
Just like all of you so thanks to all your creativity spans the globe via smashing magazine.
- 150
March 2nd, 2010 7:14 amMy favourite one is Ghost Stories!
- 151
March 2nd, 2010 9:51 amWow. As a BC graphic designer, i would suggest you take off the olympic wallpaper before you get sued. It is highly illegal to use that image and the olympic rings image.
- 152

March 3rd, 2010 7:53 amMaybe what would make this more of an impact is having a functional calender over layed over the wallpaper. That is something I’ve been looking for my website since the front page is like a desktop.
