Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: March 2010
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for March 2010?
Please notice that you can also download the March 2010 Windows 7 Theme, prepared by Tim Heuer for Smashing Magazine and its readers.

New Beginnings
"I graduated college approximately 2 years ago, and since that time have worked as an IT consultant/auditor for a large accounting firm. February 28th, 2010 3:35 amIt would be nice if you could split the calendars up into three different categories:
1. Week starts on Monday
2. Week starts on Sunday
3. Linear calendar
I ofter find a lot of awesome wallpapers that I would like, but I just can’t use the ones that start the week on Sunday. Maybe you could ask the designers to submit one of each? So for the non-linear week designs, the download options would be:
preview
with calendar – Monday-based week
with calendar – Sunday-based week
without calendar
That would help a lot! Thanks!

February 28th, 2010 4:05 amI really love Smashing Magazine, but I absolutely detest these wallpaper posts, simply because they are so extremely ugly. They are in no way innovative, creative or inspiring. Please quit this habit of this monthly spray of vomit!
Phoenixheart
March 1st, 2010 6:10 pmThough honestly I don’t much like this month’s wallpapers, others may find them beautiful and usable. So the same old saying, if you don’t like them – too bad. Why so aggressive?
David Wilder
March 2nd, 2010 6:42 amI really have enjoyed some of the Calendar months in the past but especially lean months like this one seem to detract from the usual quality I expect from Smashing magazine. Yet this collection still merited 4 stars out of 5?
After more than twenty years of agency work I must admit that I am surprised. I think it’s fair to ask yourself if this work would share that level of acceptance in the real world. I think there are those who are “boosters” for the site and are very “charitable” in a way you’d expect your mother to be, just happy that you competed. In my life as a creative director that has hardly ever been enough.
If you are going to “rank” this work there must be a level of oversight to prevent “grade inflation.” The work must be compared with the broad spectrum of work produced by our community to have any validity.
Simply put, all work is not equal.

March 2nd, 2010 2:09 amThank you, I honestly didn’t realise my mistake at the time :(
Martin Bentley Krebs
March 2nd, 2010 9:15 amThen you honestly didn’t check your work carefully enough before you submitted it. This brings to mind an earlier poster’s concern about these designs “making it” in the real world. You have a responsibility as a designer to make certain that your work is accurate. And SM should never have accepted it in the first place until it was corrected.
For those of you who think I’m being harsh, consider if this would be for actual paying clients. This would not be acceptable to them.
Stephanie Lam
March 2nd, 2010 11:00 pmI understand that I should have checked my work closely and picked up on my mistake. It was an honest one and we’re all humans beings, therefore we are inclined to make mistakes. You could look at a piece of work a thousand times and still not pick it up. In the design industry, it’s not acceptable to paying clients, but it happens and you learn from it.
Mosey
April 4th, 2010 4:35 amYes, I do think you’re being too harsh here. Imho it would have been sufficient to point out that the date was incorrect, like Brian, instead of launching into a mini-tirade.

Valerie Morgan
March 1st, 2010 1:27 pmWhat is a dropped P?
Walk Softly
March 1st, 2010 6:43 pmValerie, for Plucky. Having pluck or courage of course. A “p” off to the side would read p…lucky me. I’m into inspirational subliminal hidden messages. One can then be plucky to be lucky and vice versa lucky to be plucky. .

March 1st, 2010 2:26 pmWallpapers this month are “okay” at best. The Mario one could have been done a lot better to capture the mood of it. Right now it is the most cliche wallpaper with Mario and a couple clouds slapped on top. Whoopy! Great job on getting the posts main image though…
And does SM or anybody here know what HD is? None of these are HD resolutions. 480p, 720p, 1080p… I have a Mac with 16:10 (not true HD) and a secondary monitor that is 16:9 (true HD). How did 16:10 get to be the standard resolution when 16:9 is used more often?

March 1st, 2010 4:16 pmDonuts! Nice set of wallpapers, I’ll have plenty to alternate now
