Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: April 2010 (Easter Edition)
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching the default time application?
This post features 80 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for April 2010?

Surprise Its Me
"Month of April is well known for Fool’s day. April Fools’ Day or All Fools’ Day is a day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbors, or sending them on a fool’s errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. I designed this wallpaper to represent the Month of april in my way, which begins with the fool’s day. March 31st, 2010 3:57 amUgh… when I find one that I really like, there’s no 1920×1200 resolution :/
Prasun Dutta
March 31st, 2010 4:02 amComing month onwards, can you please include size of (1366×768), because my laptop’s screen resolution (1366×768).
Thanks in advance

March 31st, 2010 5:33 amLots of cool desktop papers. Nice collection. Thanks for bringing them all together for us.
TomTom
March 31st, 2010 5:57 amNot a bad mixture this month. At first I thought it would be dominated by cute pastel children’s illustrations (something Smashing contributors have been trending towards for a few months now. Nothing wrong with that, but some of us have different tastes.
Again, for the fifth or sixth month in a row, one of the best desktops is unusable because the calendar is wrong! Artists, please check your dates! Postcard from SF is beautiful but April 2010 starts on Thursday.
Personal favorites: Isometric Indulgence. Abandoned Stone Door, Cinematic Squirrel.
Other faves I’ll be using. Parrot Season, Wash Away, Sunrise Grazing (beautiful photo), Ride a Bike, Green Strings, New Beginnings, April Daisy & Spring Flower. Good job all.
Olivia Bell
March 31st, 2010 6:10 amThank you Tom(Tom?) :)

March 31st, 2010 6:08 amOverall, not the best showcase of designs, but….
I did like “Ride a Bike”. I love the style and I am going to ride my road bike today! I just added it to my desktop to help me make it through this day!
Dan

March 31st, 2010 8:09 amA small mistake: the 1920×1200 size of April Sky includes the calendar in both the calendar and no-calendar images.

March 31st, 2010 8:28 amI like the comic wallpapers,

March 31st, 2010 11:58 amNot a bad collection, there are a ton on here (including my “cinematic squirrel”, woo hoo!)… But with 80 designs included it leads me to believe they include anybody who submits one? Oh well, variety is the spice of life, and I’m sure there is somebody out there who likes each one. Good job, all.

March 31st, 2010 2:37 pmI feel that for this month it was more of quantity rather than quality. Many were hardly up to standard.
But thanks SM for running this monthly – really provides me with lots of inspiration :)

March 31st, 2010 8:08 pmI love the works os Sasha Bell – right now I’m saying a sad goodbye to her wallpaper for March.
In this moment I’m torn between her “Sunrise grazing” and Millicent Bowman’s inspirational wallpaper. Both are just superb!
Sasha Bell
April 1st, 2010 1:06 amAw thanks but “Sunrise grazing” was taken by Olivia Bell (my sister) :)

March 31st, 2010 8:50 pmFor everyone complaining, why don’t you make a calendar to make the collection “better” ?
I think some of these were pretty good, some not, but regardless I think it’s good to encourage effort, even if there’s a few “student work”-esque wallpapers. After all, if you don’t like it, do you HAVE to use it? No.
Thanks peeps.
Chris
April 1st, 2010 3:08 pmWell spoken, great point. I hate to hear all the negative comments from people who apperently have too much talent for the rest of us.

March 31st, 2010 9:57 pmI like the ‘Splatter’ with the best, and like too the ‘Reactor Number 4′.

March 31st, 2010 10:52 pmAmazing works!!! I’ll start with easter bunny, but I think I will change it later to use some more. Mirror, sweet messy & ride a bike are my favourite. Unfortunately they are not in my office-desktop-resolution (1280×1024)… Thank you once again :D
Sarah
March 31st, 2010 11:11 pmI’ve seen some great wallpapers! Too bad there’s not a multi-screen wallpaper but maybe I can enhance one by myself :)

April 1st, 2010 12:32 amHi, thanks for adding the However wallpaper.
By the way, a simple question with no relation with the April Calendar : is it possible not to run the smashing book ad (at the footer of the page) each time the user refreshes the page or navigate into the site ? ;-)
Anyway I love “smashing”

April 1st, 2010 12:44 amThere are 4-5 desktop wallpaper from one designer without any great changes…Big Disappointment !!!

April 1st, 2010 6:53 amevery month i scroll through waiting for one to just ‘hit’ me and be the image i want to see for the next month. :) this month it’s TreeMadness.. just something about the flat background but the slight shadows under each flower is very pleasing.
(Reactor No. 4 was the other fave, brilliant photograph!)

April 1st, 2010 7:00 amI appreciate the free desktops presented every month, I really do, but the majority of these are REALLY terrible. The few that do standout as being slightly creative, prepared with a modicum of skill and are actually nice to look at are being brought down by the overall aesthetic of “I did this in ten minutes and now I’m on SMASHING! YAY!!!!!!” that the rest have. I usually keep my complaints to myself but, wow. This is really lowing the bar. :(
Here’s hoping for next month!
Chris
April 9th, 2010 12:58 pmAnd here’s hoping you continue keeping your complaints to yourself in the future. Really, who do some of you people think you are?!?! Get the **** over yourselves.
