Smashing Magazine
The Ultimate Free Web Designer’s Icon Set (750 icons, incl. PSD sources)
There are thousands of free icon sets out there, and every other day we see new sets being released by the design community. In fact, Smashing Magazine has been releasing icon sets for years now, too. But today’s release is particularly important. Over the last 1.5 years, Oliver Twardowski was designing and preparing an “ultimate web designer’s icon set” exclusively for Smashing Magazine and its readers. Today we release the third, final version of the set, an extensive pack with over 750 free icons (48×48px) for designers and Web developers. The .PSD-sources are available for free download as well.
The set consists of web application icons, user interface icons, e-commerce icons, general use icons, desktop icons, blog icons, smiley icons, button icons, keyboard icons, national flags icons, popular online services icons and many others.

You can use the set for all of your projects for free and without any restrictions. You can freely use it for both your private and commercial projects, including software, online services, templates and themes. Behind the design
As always, here are some insights from the designer himself:
“In January 2009 I released my first pixel-based iconset ‘Flavour’ right here on the Smashing Magazine. A couple of months later, in May 2009, I extended that set and released ‘Flavour Extended’. Now, over one year later it’s time to finish this set. ‘Addictive Flavour’ will be the last part of the Flavour series. (At least for now I think it will be ^_^ ).
In my releases I asked you for your feedback on the iconset and that feedback was overwhelming. I received hundreds of e-mails and read even more comments here and on Twitter. With ‘Addictive Flavour’ I hope to give you the icon set that you wanted and that you need for your web development projects. Though, if there is a special icon missing in the set that you need for your project or site, please feel free to contact me on Twitter (@mywayhome or via e-mail (icons [at] addictedotocoffee dot de) and we’ll see what we can do for you!

Most of these packs now are on iconfinder. I find that there is no reason to download icon packs anymore, unless working offline.

Great Icon set, only bad thing is the cloud icons, they look terrible like the were quickly put together last minute, apart from them its a good set.

Am I right to assume we’re allowed to modify them, at least on a small scale? Some are of less contrast/saturation then I’d prefer for my projects, but some quick color correction can fix that I think.
In any case, great set, especially the keyboard ones in particular for me. We all appreciate the hard work!

Oliver, it’s Ukraine here. But I’d say there’s a high chance of missing country of many other smashing magazine visitors – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_sovereign-state_flags lists twice as much flags.

I always like looking at the United Nations Member States. These represent (in my simple mind) the countries of the world. Take a look here: http://www.un.org/en/members/ or here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_member_states
You currently provide 94 country flags, but there are 192 United Nations member states – you might want to add them to your icon set.Thanks for your efforts!

Very nice. I like generic icon sets. Sets themed around coffee or office chairs or worms are hard to utilize unless you’re working on a site that requires that genre. (Coffee-drinking worms in office chairs anyone?) But generic navigation or “web” icons are nice because they can be dropped anywhere.

Whats the point of designing anything in Photoshop? This would be a lot more useful if it was vector and therefore scalable.

Could be true. But when I go and design ‘em in PS on a 48x48px canvas I can assure that the will be crisp and as pixel perfect as I want them to be.

I used the File Icons within my opensource webbased project management programm. After uploading files within the task and comments to the task your file icons will appear :-) superdido!
What I didnt understand is why you didnt make a file icon for zip files?
