Modern Web-building technologies allow designers to realize their most daring and creative ideas. Enhanced interactivity and a remarkable visual appearance can be achieved by means of such tools as Flash, JavaScript and Papervision3D, to name just a few. These strengths usually impress and entertain visitors and thus are often used for conceptual artistic presentations and promotional campaigns.

In this post, you’ll find a collection of amusing websites that, by combining unconventional (and sometimes bizarre) ideas and clever JavaScript and Flash effects, will entice you to play on them for an embarrassing long time.

Bizarre and Beautiful Websites

Record Tripping1

All you need to use this tool is Java (probably already installed on your computer).

That, who are speaking that flash is old technology just don’t know anything about web.

    Great websites, bookmarked.

“these interactive sites are wonderfull” sure sounds like your a fan, I wanna see html5 do this

      -1
      • 13

HTML5 is something completely different from Flash.

You can never think of doing such things with HTML5…

        0
    • 14

HTML5 could never do these things. Even for video alone Flash can still do more than HTML5.

And with the people that say Flash is old tech, as you say, they dont know anything about it.
Flash is updated FAR more often with new features in comparison to HTML, and HTML has been around way longer… so by these peoples own reasoning, HTML5 must be ancient and totally obsolete.

So people like you like this sort of stuff – which can only be done with Flash. Yet you’re not a fan of Flash?

Over 70% of the most visited sites on the web use Flash, and sites like Youtube/Vimeo would have never of existed without it. Or pretty much all of the most creative websites like these examples.
But you dont like Flash. That makes sense.

Yes, that’s also my question: Could you use instead of Flash in this Websites also HTML 5?

      0
      • 43

        Short answer: No. :]

        1
      • 44

I say yes. But it’d be in the future. And most likely made by Flash developers.

        0
      • 45

My flash kaleidoscopes (http://annamika.com) have been re-created as an iPad app.
It took considerable programming skills and the collaborated with an expert programmer. But I have to admit that the end result is something even better than what I could do in Flash. I empathize with all of the Flash guru’s out there. I love Apple, I love Adobe and I wish the two could work it out.

Maybe we can hope Flash CS6 will code for iPads & iPhones.. because it’s great to make cool flash sites, but even better to actually make a little cash from it.

Such a shame Smashing Magazine has become Flashing Magazine.

    -2
    • 56

      @Adrian
What is your problem? There is no other posts about other technologies in SM? If Smashing Magazine speaks about Flash is because, believe it or not, Flash is the only tool that deliver the most creative stuff in the web (for now). So I would say “such a shame you are so narrow minded”. I really dislike absurd accusations….

    Cool list!

Here is another unusual website: http://www.zoomarium.com

It is an image sharing web community of a new kind: hybrid between Image Sharing and Google Maps.

All images are placed by the users on a huge (900 Terapixel) board at any desired location. The board can be zoomed in and out and browsed in the same manner as Google Maps.

You can create collages of your images like this: http://www.zoomarium.com/index.php?x=0.6385339440977056&y=0.7482402143479793&w=0.02528107334694749&h=0.012579115212475329 and send your friend link to it (click ‘link’ in the menu).

Good blog! I really love how it is simple on my eyes and the data are well written. I am wondering how I might be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your RSS feed which must do the trick! Have a nice day!

Wow, I started getting flashbacks (no pun intended) to all those times where I was told that a flash site was amazing and so I took a look and guess what? …..there is NOOOOOOO
Navigation …soooooo boring and those were the ones where there wasn’t a broken link.

I normally Will Not Criticise an article because I really appreciate the effort made by SM for putting stuff on here thats both informative, educational and inspirational but I had to write soothing this time…
    Sorry.

Awesome list – VERSEU.com is pretty cool too. Its like the internet competition where you create a profile of yourself or anything you like and compete against everyone!
