Behind the design

As always, here are some insights from the designer:

“The open-source world is overwhelmed with design resources. For UI designers and website developers, there are a huge number of nice icon collections, but most of these collections are designed for a specific purpose, theme or industry. Most of the time, designers have to mix and match desired icons and customize them according to the requirements resulting in a lot of effort, un-balanced designs, and sometimes mere frustration. As a designer, I often feel the need of a set of generic icons that I can use easily in any design theme without having to customize their design, combination or color.

gcons is my contribution to the world of open source resources for designers and web developers. These icons are multi-purpose and can be a good fit in a number of scenarios like UI themes, technical diagrams, website design, prototype development etc.

Thank you very much, Sarfraz! We appreciate your efforts.

  5. 5

    Wow AWESOME!

    Thank you so much!

  6. 6

Great icons, love this minimal style!

  7. 7

These Icons look the same as the thousands that are already out there on other design sites. c’mon guys, be creative.

    • 8

Translation: Thanks for putting in some hard work, on your own time, to release these free icons that I can choose to use, or not use.

I’m going to continue to leech on the community. Thanks again!

      • 9

DItto! Sharing your own work (and a quality one) for free is just great. Thank you.

      • 10

The great thing about speech, is that it’s also free. So are opinions.

        • 11

Mike, I recommend you search other sites that have free fonts available and download something you like from them. Cheers,

          • 12

It seems like you are all missing the point! I have no need for Icons like these. I’m skilled enough to make my own, and have also been featured on Smashing Magazine. I have no interest in ‘leeching’ free icons as Matt put it, and why would I want free fonts?

The point I made is that these icons are the same as many others. That’s all. I never said they were bad or useless. But it does show what people read into things!

          • 13

I think it all come down to what *most of us* learned in kindergarten. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Mike, Your opinion is pointless here. If you don’t like them, don’t use them. End of story.

          • 14

@mike so if you said that you we’re skilled enough as you say, why even click the link that brought you here ? just to brag that you’re better and say that you were featured?
I’m sure there was a preview for the set right?

          • 15

yeah most of this are the same, but I agree with the designer

“As a designer, I often feel the need of a set of generic icons that I can use easily in any design theme without having to customize their design, combination or color.”

    • 16

A lot of these icons *ARE* from different sets. I see icons from PICOL, Android Icons and Freshpixel just in the preview.

  8. 17

    Nice one!

    Thanks a lot!

    Best wishes, Oliver

  9. 18

I like such simple monochrome icons because it opens the possibility of easily overlaying a color hue, thus making them more compatible with a predefined color scheme.

  10. 19

Thanks! I will use them right now! And yes, they look a lot like existing items, but they are well made. And I needed something like this right now!

  11. 20
  12. 21

Just when I needed this! Thanks, great resource!

  13. 22

poorly not for retina display :(

  14. 23

    Great, Thanks a bunch, Sarfraz!

  15. 24

32×32 pixels, what is this 1990? I know it’s free but come on 32 pixels! How about posting the more useful and versatile illustrator files?

Yes, sure. The icons are free for all private, public and commercial projects.

  20. 31

Like the icons – and I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but at 32×32 only, they’re not going to prove very versatile.

Ideally there would be masked bitmaps for 16×16, 32×32, 48×48 and vector files for every size above.

  21. 32

    Wow these look great! Thanks!

  22. 33

  23. 34

    THANKSSSSS!!! Wonderful!

  24. 35

  25. 36

This is absolutely awesome! Thanks a lot!

  26. 37

First of all I want to apologize for this unrequested critique.

I am missing some kind of graphical concept in this set. The single Icons look like cut’n’paste from wingdings1,2,3 and webdings. There is no special style in the symbolism, no continous stroke or line thickness, no recurring forms…

Just to take some arbitrary forms and color them white might be a bit to simple for using it in a real project.

  27. 38

Wow! I was going to have to design icons just like these for a project at work today… not anymore!

Not anymore! You guys keep producing awesome time saving resources for free! Makes me want to support you more and more (keep those pdf books coming :D )

    nice! thanks!!

  31. 42

The icons are great, thank you very much.

I don’t mean to be unthankful, but just one thing: why the colored background in PNG images instead of transparent background? Sure, one can extract icons with any background from PSD, but PNGs with transparent background would be more versatile & ready-to-use and enables you to use the same iconset with different color themes.

Also, 32×32 is kind of tiny size nowadays. Vector version available?

  32. 43

    Thanks Sarfraz, very nice icons!

  33. 44

    nice and cool icon
    thanks a lot.

  34. 45

There are several logos used in this set with copyright restrictions. How exactly are they free for commercial use? Most notably the Apple and USB logos…

  35. 46

Just what I needed! Thanks so much for collecting this list!

  36. 47

    Thank you man! Great JOB!

  37. 48

Bookmarked! I think they could become handy in the near future.

  38. 49

These are awesome! Thanks so much.

  39. 50

I love great icon sets! I just have one small critique: some of these icons look very much like the sets included in that Pictodeck Keynote file that was floating around Smashing a while ago…

What do you guys think? Are Mike Knight and I the only ones that are a bit skeptical?

    • 51

Thanks for the mention in your reply, and I agree with you. I just feel that there are too many Icons like this. Just browse iStock or Shutterstock and you’ll see. Most are exactly the same.

      Thanks for agreeing with me.

  40. 52

    Very nice icons!!!

  41. 53

    They look nice. Great work!!

  42. 54

we get the PSD but the licence should be more explicit…

  43. 55

Have you told you lately that I <3 Smashing Magazine??

  46. 58

Thanks a bunch, this will come in useful for many projects :)

  47. 59

hehe, I did some icons similar to that ones the other day, I love the set, very neat :)

  48. 60

Thank you so much! It would be great if it included social media icons though.

  49. 61

    very nice! thank you

  50. 62

    Thank you for this.

One complaint though – an ‘open source’ icon set should really give you the vectors, since I can’t really edit the source otherwise (i.e. I can’t really edit a 32×32 pixel icon). I would probably categorise these as ‘free’ as opposed to ‘open source’, as they don’t necessarily mean the same thing.

    Still, free is free!

    • 63

      Hey Aaron,

If you visit the designer page, it says he has planned the vector format. Hope to see soon.

  51. 64

  67. 80

Excellent set of versatile icons. Greatly appreciated guys, and Kudos to Sarfraz.

  68. 81

Like a fool I used some of these icons only to realise later that I cannnot use them in a bigger format because they’re just 32×32.

    • 82

According to his site he’s working on bigger ones. Hopefully they get released soon.

  69. 83

For designers? Are you kidding me? They are so plain, common and naive… Maybe for developers with no estetic feeling, but not designers. Most of them are very-low-estetic-quality.

    • 84

Man have you ever heard of photoshop? You know you can edit this nicely drawn icons to suit your design?

  70. 85

That’s what I call an useful icon set. Great work.

Too much appreciation. Why is it a hundred? For the number? Some of them are superfluous, some are poorly designed. Better a set of ten useful icons…
