Free all-purpose Icons Gcons

Behind the design

As always, here are some insights from the designer:

“The open-source world is overwhelmed with design resources. For UI designers and website developers, there are a huge number of nice icon collections, but most of these collections are designed for a specific purpose, theme or industry. Most of the time, designers have to mix and match desired icons and customize them according to the requirements resulting in a lot of effort, un-balanced designs, and sometimes mere frustration. As a designer, I often feel the need of a set of generic icons that I can use easily in any design theme without having to customize their design, combination or color.

gcons is my contribution to the world of open source resources for designers and web developers. These icons are multi-purpose and can be a good fit in a number of scenarios like UI themes, technical diagrams, website design, prototype development etc.

Thank you very much, Sarfraz! We appreciate your efforts.

It seems like you are all missing the point! I have no need for Icons like these. I’m skilled enough to make my own, and have also been featured on Smashing Magazine. I have no interest in ‘leeching’ free icons as Matt put it, and why would I want free fonts?

The point I made is that these icons are the same as many others. That’s all. I never said they were bad or useless. But it does show what people read into things!

I think it all come down to what *most of us* learned in kindergarten. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Mike, Your opinion is pointless here. If you don’t like them, don’t use them. End of story.

Like the icons – and I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but at 32×32 only, they’re not going to prove very versatile.

Ideally there would be masked bitmaps for 16×16, 32×32, 48×48 and vector files for every size above.

First of all I want to apologize for this unrequested critique.

I am missing some kind of graphical concept in this set. The single Icons look like cut’n'paste from wingdings1,2,3 and webdings. There is no special style in the symbolism, no continous stroke or line thickness, no recurring forms…

Just to take some arbitrary forms and color them white might be a bit to simple for using it in a real project.

The icons are great, thank you very much.

I don’t mean to be unthankful, but just one thing: why the colored background in PNG images instead of transparent background? Sure, one can extract icons with any background from PSD, but PNGs with transparent background would be more versatile & ready-to-use and enables you to use the same iconset with different color themes.

Also, 32×32 is kind of tiny size nowadays. Vector version available?

    Thank you for this.

One complaint though – an ‘open source’ icon set should really give you the vectors, since I can’t really edit the source otherwise (i.e. I can’t really edit a 32×32 pixel icon). I would probably categorise these as ‘free’ as opposed to ‘open source’, as they don’t necessarily mean the same thing.

    Still, free is free!

Mike, I recommend you search other sites that have free fonts available and download something you like from them. Cheers,

I think it all come down to what *most of us* learned in kindergarten. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Mike, Your opinion is pointless here. If you don’t like them, don’t use them. End of story.

I like such simple monochrome icons because it opens the possibility of easily overlaying a color hue, thus making them more compatible with a predefined color scheme.

There are several logos used in this set with copyright restrictions. How exactly are they free for commercial use? Most notably the Apple and USB logos…

@mike so if you said that you we’re skilled enough as you say, why even click the link that brought you here ? just to brag that you’re better and say that you were featured?
I’m sure there was a preview for the set right?
