Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: August 2010
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for August 2010?
[Offtopic: by the way, did you know that there is a Smashing eBook Series? Book #1 is Professional Web Design, 242 pages for just $9,90.]

Sand Between My Toes
"It’s still pretty hot in the UK, but after reading comments in July’s wallpaper feature, I picked up that in Australia, it’s “winter” – so I thought why not try to do a beach shot which can be interrupted and doesn’t scream “summer”! I hope you like this simple beach shot – hopefully a nice change! Ps. the legs in this shot belong to Rosanna Bell ;) Happy August!" Designed by Olivia Bell from England, UK.

July 31st, 2010 3:11 amHmm… not quite impressive designs this month.
Its summer time, and some independent day for India design.
Well I guess I’ll pick “Watch out for sharks” for my wallpaper this month.
I just love the blue color…. - 9
July 31st, 2010 3:14 amI love over the bridge
Thanks smashing u r always smashing ;) - 10
July 31st, 2010 3:15 amAll Wallpaper are not good for a 1980 x 1080 Resolution :/
- 11
July 31st, 2010 4:01 amOver the Bridge easily stands out in this month offer, which I find less exciting than previous issues. I do not understand why most of these designers do not see that if they put a calendar on the wallpapers, it has to be centered else it is hidden under icons.
- 12
July 31st, 2010 5:55 ami have no icons on my desktop ;)
so the calendar is fine anywhere! - 13
August 1st, 2010 9:28 amI could not agree with you more!! Many to choose from, yet only a few could actually be used for their purpose. Isn’t the whole point of using these CALENDAR wallpapers BECAUSE of the calendar?
- 14
August 2nd, 2010 2:23 amsuper buddha thank you for that it’s exactly what i’ve encountered… just can’t use the ones that aren’t centered or slightly off center nor the ones that aren’t traditionally in a block design rather than linear. The bridge was the choice for me plus it is beautiful… oh wait the singing sunflower fits well too so I’ll switch to that one with the musical notes for the grandkids… get in some learning time from the pics too…

August 9th, 2010 9:53 amI really appreciate how much work the team of SM and each creator of these wallpaper put into this page, however I feel like a lot of those calendars miss the point on several features:
1 the Calendar: because the purpose of this is to publish a series of calendars, please make it functionnal and easily readable. That means centered (windows users usually have numerous icons on the side of the desktop) and with a font big enough.
2 the background colours: when using a computer in a in low light , a very bright and clear wallpaper can be strainuous on the eye, also very vivid colours can be distracting on a workstation.
3 National Celebrations: I am sure that If I make a January Calendar with Robert Burns (Born 25th January) and bagpipes and kilts and Scotland (where I live) national flag, only the Scotts will be real thrilled, and most people will not think one second putting that on their machine. Why not go for universal themes instead?
Again thank you for making this monthly column exist in all its diversity, do not take this comment as a critique it’s just a couple of ideas I wanted to share.

August 10th, 2010 5:11 amMaybe it’s time to clean up your desktop so you can enjoy the nice clean look of just having the wallpaper… I used to have icons all over my desktop until I worked on computers that didn’t allow anything to be saved or stored there. I’m so used to it that I now prefer the simplicity of a clean desktop. Give it a try! :)
On another note, thanks for the wonderful collection of wallpapers! I look forward to downloading them every month!

July 31st, 2010 4:47 amFantastic wallpapers
- 22
July 31st, 2010 4:54 amSome really good calendars … “In the Hole” is very imaginative. I do believe the selections should be limited to one design per person.
- 23
July 31st, 2010 5:05 amVery nice. Brilliant works.
- 24
July 31st, 2010 5:12 amSummer Cat is my favourite. There are finally some nice ones this month.
- 25
July 31st, 2010 5:16 amGreat list as usual.
FYI – “One Mad Cookie”, 1920×1200 – the calendar is actually missing from the image.
- 26
July 31st, 2010 5:22 amOptions should be:
with calendar:
without calendar:
without smashing logo (saving you 15 seconds in Photoshop):Thanks guys..some good stuff as always!
- 27
July 31st, 2010 6:01 amperhaps if they have their own site
they could offer their calendars without the logo - 28
August 1st, 2010 3:15 pm@mike i
You know one of the submission requirements is having the Smashing logo right?

July 31st, 2010 5:51 amLots of effort represented in this month’s work — kudos to all the designers.
I most liked “Aves lacuna,” “Color emotions,” “Cows” and “Singing sunflower.”
It seems petty when folks complain about this rich and free resource: I can move my icons where I want (calendar doesn’t have to be in the center) and I make the graphic sizes work, regardless. And the best entries should be accepted (regardless of how many times one designer submits work). Go, SmashingMagazine!
- 30
July 31st, 2010 6:18 am:) Nicely said, Janie.

- 34
July 31st, 2010 6:44 amOMG!! First of all, I would like to say Thank You to for accepting 2 of my wallpaper. However, I noticed that I the title of those 2 wallpapers were wrong: the first Photography wallpaper should be named as ‘The Modern Lion City’, while the second wallpaper should be named as “London Tower Bridge”. Sorry about that – my mistake, I submitted wrongly. x
- 35
July 31st, 2010 6:49 amtks for all of you~nice wall paper designers~!
- 36
July 31st, 2010 7:13 amAves Lacuna is great. And the Cows!! I tend to go for the designs that don’t have a lot of clutter on the side and the bottom, as that’s where I have my dock and shortcuts. Those two are both particularly attractive and clean. I will be happy to spend my month looking at them on my desktop! Kudos to both designers, and thanks so much for sharing.
- 37
July 31st, 2010 8:23 amYeah I really hate Mondays :P

- 39
July 31st, 2010 8:39 amMy favourites are “over the bridge” and “Piranha fishing”. Whoever is the illustrator for Piranha fishing… great work!
- 40
July 31st, 2010 9:01 amLove Aves Lacuna… Leaves in the Rain reminds me of my beloved hostas… and Summer Freedom reminds me of the freedom of my childhood. Great entries this month, Smashing. I’m so glad Win7 offers the background slide show, I don’t have to pick just one!
Oh, and for those who hate their icons obstructing the wallpaper… try Fences. It’s a free program that will hide all your icons until you doubleclick on the desktop.
- 41
July 31st, 2010 9:03 amAwesome designs!!
I love “Over the Bridge” and “Summer Cat” – pity they are not available for a 1440×900 resolution :( - 42

August 1st, 2010 9:00 amA lot of good ones this month! Usually, when I scroll through them, I pick out which ones ‘speak’ to me as potential wallpapers for my computer and take the one I like the best. Here are my top choices (#1 of course, being what I’ll be using this month)

August 3rd, 2010 4:58 amMany great choices as usual. Why do the non-linear calendars start the week with Monday and put Sunday last?
- 128
August 8th, 2010 2:01 amMost European calendars start the week on a Monday because it is the start of the workweek. Sundays are usually part of the weekEND. The International Standards Organization (ISO) calendars start their weeks on Mondays.

It looks like the main theme this month is the Independence day, all the designs are fairly different for this topic but I liked Aditya L’s design most because it doesn’t use the common colours you would associate with India, instead the colours are more earthy and represent the topic of sacrifice and struggle best.
My favourite wallpaper on the whole list is ‘Come Sail Away by Allison Doty. The vectored image and bright colours represent summer really well. Looking at her website she looks like a very talented designer.- 136
August 4th, 2010 6:24 amThank you so much Vikesh and Nikki! I am glad there are some other hippie kindrid-spirits out there! And thank you so much for your kind words about my website Vikesh :)

August 4th, 2010 3:37 amMy favourite is Sasha Bell’s “Beach Time”. The colours of the sun and the sky remind me of those glazed biscuits I used to eat as a kid. Very nice.

August 24th, 2010 8:38 amWhen I first saw this picture I really fell in love with it. I’ve had this as my desktop for most of the month now but wish I hadn’t noticed the ghost images in the background. They’re very distracting and blemish what is otherwise an excellent photo. It also leads you to wonder — what were they doing there in the first place? They almost have the appearance of something that’s been cropped out.

- 152
August 5th, 2010 1:05 pmI am not impressed with the use of the Bleeding Cowboys typeface in Emily Shirley’s piece- a good overall design (the composition is very nice) but that font is very, well, amateur.

August 6th, 2010 11:35 pmThe wallpapers are absolutely wonderful. But its so strange to see that there isn’t a single one with 1376×768 resolution? Its the most popular size used in almost all the laptops available today in the market.

August 8th, 2010 1:55 amWonderful August collection! My favourites are Summers Freedom, SinGiNg SuNFloWeR, and Summer Cat. In the end, I picked Olivia Bell’s Summers Freedom because it evoked childhood memories of carefree, summer days when the world is a child’s toy and the most wonderful summer companion is your best friend. Fabulous work, Olivia!
