Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: August 2010

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for August 2010?

[Offtopic: by the way, did you know that there is a Smashing eBook Series? Book #1 is Professional Web Design, 242 pages for just $9,90.]

Over the Bridge easily stands out in this month offer, which I find less exciting than previous issues. I do not understand why most of these designers do not see that if they put a calendar on the wallpapers, it has to be centered else it is hidden under icons.

I could not agree with you more!! Many to choose from, yet only a few could actually be used for their purpose. Isn’t the whole point of using these CALENDAR wallpapers BECAUSE of the calendar?

super buddha thank you for that it’s exactly what i’ve encountered… just can’t use the ones that aren’t centered or slightly off center nor the ones that aren’t traditionally in a block design rather than linear. The bridge was the choice for me plus it is beautiful… oh wait the singing sunflower fits well too so I’ll switch to that one with the musical notes for the grandkids… get in some learning time from the pics too…

I really appreciate how much work the team of SM and each creator of these wallpaper put into this page, however I feel like a lot of those calendars miss the point on several features:

1 the Calendar: because the purpose of this is to publish a series of calendars, please make it functionnal and easily readable. That means centered (windows users usually have numerous icons on the side of the desktop) and with a font big enough.

2 the background colours: when using a computer in a in low light , a very bright and clear wallpaper can be strainuous on the eye, also very vivid colours can be distracting on a workstation.

3 National Celebrations: I am sure that If I make a January Calendar with Robert Burns (Born 25th January) and bagpipes and kilts and Scotland (where I live) national flag, only the Scotts will be real thrilled, and most people will not think one second putting that on their machine. Why not go for universal themes instead?

Again thank you for making this monthly column exist in all its diversity, do not take this comment as a critique it’s just a couple of ideas I wanted to share.

Maybe it’s time to clean up your desktop so you can enjoy the nice clean look of just having the wallpaper… I used to have icons all over my desktop until I worked on computers that didn’t allow anything to be saved or stored there. I’m so used to it that I now prefer the simplicity of a clean desktop. Give it a try! :)

On another note, thanks for the wonderful collection of wallpapers! I look forward to downloading them every month!

Lots of effort represented in this month’s work — kudos to all the designers.

I most liked “Aves lacuna,” “Color emotions,” “Cows” and “Singing sunflower.”

It seems petty when folks complain about this rich and free resource: I can move my icons where I want (calendar doesn’t have to be in the center) and I make the graphic sizes work, regardless. And the best entries should be accepted (regardless of how many times one designer submits work). Go, SmashingMagazine!

Aves Lacuna is great. And the Cows!! I tend to go for the designs that don’t have a lot of clutter on the side and the bottom, as that’s where I have my dock and shortcuts. A lot of good ones this month! Usually, when I scroll through them, I pick out which ones ‘speak’ to me as potential wallpapers for my computer and take the one I like the best. Here are my top choices (#1 of course, being what I’ll be using this month)

    1. Leaves in the Rain
    2. Sand Between My Toes
    3. Nature’s Dream

    Well done, everyone!

The collection this month is really good.
It looks like the main theme this month is the Independence day, all the designs are fairly different for this topic but I liked Aditya L’s design most because it doesn’t use the common colours you would associate with India, instead the colours are more earthy and represent the topic of sacrifice and struggle best.
My favourite wallpaper on the whole list is ‘Come Sail Away by Allison Doty. The vectored image and bright colours represent summer really well. Looking at her website she looks like a very talented designer.

When I first saw this picture I really fell in love with it. I’ve had this as my desktop for most of the month now but wish I hadn’t noticed the ghost images in the background. They’re very distracting and blemish what is otherwise an excellent photo. It also leads you to wonder — what were they doing there in the first place? They almost have the appearance of something that’s been cropped out.

Why no 2560×1440 resolution? It’s so hard to find nice wallpapers for my 27″ iMac.
