Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: October 2010
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 45 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for October 2010?

Time Intensity
"I was sorting out all my brushes in Photoshop and started playing around with loads of variations of brush strokes that I actually forgot I had. I was trying to create a cloudy hole and have a fetish with time and time traveling at the moment and it turned out to be something in between a black hole and some sort of disrupted void in the space time continuum. I liked it that much afterwards I thought I’d use it for my own desktop and then thought I’d share it on smashingmag :)" Designed by Rik Hopkinson from UK.

October 1st, 2010 1:23 pmYep! Seems to me the SM team doesn’t even check the postings and just let the computer decide to fill the Wallpaper Calendar theme at random. The Bells must be excluded from random fill. I assume they are Smashing Magazine stockholders!

October 3rd, 2010 6:21 amIt’s my fault :/ They probably foresaw it until it was published, like me :/ Sorry again.

October 1st, 2010 12:45 pm10/10 is my favorite in this collection. As usual, quite a few mediocre ones included, but oh well! Alien Invaders is another fun one. I do like most of the Olivia Bell and Sasha Bell wallpapers we’ve been seeing quite a few of over the last couple months, but I’m not so sure about the Hibernation. Others are good, though!

October 2nd, 2010 2:29 amThis one is for Manish Jinwal who Copied the image of Mahatma Gandhi to gain the attention and admire from viewers…
You can see the actual image in below link
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5255256&fbid=434640942581&id=141193332581&ref=nf
Guys its good to take inspiration….but copying someone’s designed images and using in your designs is something i don’t admire and hope you all agree with me……..
Achint Verma
October 3rd, 2010 2:34 am@Deepak : Well I agree with your point of using the image of Gandhi in wallpaper but making it look so beautiful is creativity, you can compare it with link you have provided.
Creativity is not just about creating everything from scratch, it’s about how you can make things look beautiful, how you can make something look better than original.
I support Manish for Making & Sharing it to us, It looks great on my desktop.

October 4th, 2010 6:49 pmI agree with you. Not a fan of people who take another’s work to make their own. Unless they got permission of course.

October 3rd, 2010 5:29 amI started to make a listing of my favs, but it grew so long I realized there was something about each entry I could claim is unique, fascinating, etc. I selected one as outstanding to me, however. The more I look at Jack O Cal by Lindsey Kellis, the more I know it will be difficult to wait for the next entry from this designer. The way this designer incorporated ghosts into clouds with the crescent moon showing through the ghosts is just astonishingly wonderful. The whole month for real I will be looking out at the moon and yep see those ghosts. And the stars… just mere stars or what? The contrast/coloring/shading of the Jack O Cal is dead on. Placement of the year 2010 and the 31st day are outstandingly done. The curlicue topping is another treat. This designer has lots of treats and tricks for me to savor and I can’t wait until next year’s Jack O Cal. The only thing I missed seeing are spiders and night-owls, but maybe those stars…

Sick and tired of people who complain about FREE stuff
October 3rd, 2010 5:25 pmOctober: why are there so many Halloween wallpapers?
November: why are there so many Thanksgiving wallpapers?
December: why are there so many Christmas wallpapers?
April: why are there so many Easter wallpapers?
If you don’t like Christian/Pagan/Western holiday-themed wallpapers, THEN CREATE YOUR OWN FREE WALLPAPER WEBPAGE. If there happens to be many halloween-themed wallpapers this month, its because many of SMASHING MAG’s CONTRIBUTORS enjoy this WESTERN holiday.
SMASHING MAG is a WESTERN publication, visited by many people WHO HAPPEN TO HAVE WESTERN RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND CULTURE.
If you want more Asian/Aetheist -centric wallpapers, then by all means CREATE YOUR OWN FREE WALLPAPER WEBPAGE!!!
Gaah, gaah, gaah…. these kids…. every effin’ year… gah, gah….

October 4th, 2010 8:11 amI’m using ‘First leave’ right now; while the others are nice, they either don’t come in the resolution that I’d like, or they have ‘Autumn’ or ‘Halloween’ themes…concepts that are understood but not experienced where I am…First leave still has some green grass, at least!
Great work, everyone.

October 5th, 2010 5:29 amTime doesn’t allow for complimenting what I see as creative about each and every design. I wonder if the site can place a comment feature under each one in addition to this comment section. That way we could post right to the design, it would be easier.

October 8th, 2010 10:47 amWhy does it always seem that my favorite ones do not come in 1680×1050? This resolution always seems to be neglected.
My previous Dell that I had for 4 years was 1680×1050 and so is my current Mac Book Pro.

October 8th, 2010 11:08 amI love this kind of wallpapers, but its a shame that most all of them are dated wrong for some reason. For example as I write this it is the 8 of Oct. 2010 and it is Friday, on the dates listed on most of the calenders it says its the 9th. Am I the only one who has caught this.
It may be because this Oct. 2010 has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays in the same month, something that will not happen again for another 823 years years.

November 7th, 2010 7:01 amBackgrounds can serve as a source of great inspiration, beautiful and elegant they are, the best he can offer some fresh perspective and creative workflow rather boring, I am sure Most designers have a background image will change addicts. Designers can never be sufficient for the collection of backgrounds, wallpapers, however, change is often to feel fresh and thought, here I have collected 50 wallpapers really wonderful, I hope you enjoy this collection
